For me unless somebody does something to intentionlly tick me off then they're a buddy of mine. I dont have one cause I find no use other than saying "hey we're friends".

what does the buddy list do anyway? i haven't figured out how to send a quicker message with it - why is it there? i understand the ignore list and its functions though

Not on this site. On other sites, where it is actually set up, it will notify you if one of your "buddies" is on.

Right. It is good for places with live chat, for example.
