Today the Cubs purchased the contract of 24 year old switch hitting outfielder Angel Pagan from the Mets. And he will be added to the 40 man roster.

Pagan was drafted in the fourth round of the 1999 draft and had spent his entire career with the Mets. He's a defensive liability, but he possesses good speed and good contact. Last year he was in AAA and in 129 games, he was 140 for 516 with 69 runs, 20 doubles, 10 triples, 8 hrs, and 40 RBI, 271/.333/.395/.728.

Do we really have room for this guy?

Hmmz, just padding the options I guess.

Probably just another attempt to add some hitting depth to the organization. Seems most of our top prospects are pitchers so this move can't hurt.

Since day one when Pagan was drafted he was billed as a good fourth outfielder for the Mets with potential to leadoff. Just over the last five years, Pagan started batting left-handed thus making him a switch hitter, and he has marketedly improved as a lefty hitter. Last year, Pagan hit all 10 of his triples as a lefty. But he still hits southpaws better (.282 average) as opposed to righties (.267 average) which are indicative to his career averages of .288 vs lefties and .266 vs righties.

He has made drastic improvements over the last few years against righties while still hitting lefties well, which is looking like the reason the Cubs picked him up. Pagan is an excellent bunter and is very successful especially with his above average speed. Despite his speed and being billed as leadoff man in the minors, Pagan also has shown a great ability to hit in the clutch situations. Also, he also plays all three outfield positions quite well while playing shallow and runs great routes to balls.
