Well since there aren't many Expos fans that post here, I suggest we get to know each other a bit more. I know this sound s off-topic and can be ''invading'' your privacy rights but if you do not want to talk about yourself you don't have to.
For starters, my real name is Steve.
I still go to school, high school to be exact.
My all-time least favorite team is the FLORIDA MARLINS. :grouchy:
I am born here in Montréal but I am originally Greek.
I live 10 minutes from the Big O. 20 minutes by walking.

What is Cegep?
My name is Chris.
Born in 1967
Married with 2 children
Residence: Etten-Leur, The Netherlands
Baseball fan since 1981
Favorite teams: Yankees, Expos, Brooklyn Dodgers, Mariners and Braves.
Favorite position: Catcher. I am too old for that, so I am playing outfield now, but I loved to be the backstop.

Hey, I'm a more silent Expos fan, but a fan none the less.
I'm 20, live in Seattle, and am going to college right now
I've been a "fan" of baseball since '95, but didn't really get into it until 2001 (go figure).
I went on a trip up to Quebec in 2003, and at the end of my trip, was able to go to an Expos game. It was a great game against the Marlins (the Expos won!). I really enjoyed the $5 tickets (although we had to pay more to the scalper - who cares, it was still fun). Since then, I've been an Expos fan, and am hoping in the near future that baseball will find its way back there.

I'm Jeremy and I'm 19.
I was born and raised in Montreal until the age of 13. I then moved to small-town Ontario. I spent my High School years there and over all had a good time. As my last year of high school unfolded I was saddled with the decision of what to do next year, and in essence with the rest of my life. I really didn't know what I wanted to do after High School, so I got a job pumping gas and saved up. With that money I moved out of my parents home and back to Montreal. Living on your own gives you alot of time to think and alot of clarity. I now know what I want to do with my life. I'll stay in Montreal until next fall. I'll then return to Ontario and study Radio Brioadcasting.
Baseball wise, I'm much like Edgartohof. I've been a 'fan' since I was young. But only got heavily involved around 2002. I just don't think I had the attention span to be a hardcore fan before then. I had difficulty sitting through an entire game. This site has been invaluable in making me a smarter baseball fan.

Godspeed with that my friend. I can tell you from experience that it is extremely difficult to find a job in radio broadcasting if you don't know anyone in the business. And you're probably thinking to yourself "It's difficult if you suck. I won't have any problems." I know that's what I tought. But contacts and PR aptitudes are A LOT more useful than talent, trust me.

I know you're right about that AG. Sadly that seems to be the same story in many jobs. I'm willing to move to pretty much anywhere in the country so maybe that'll help. I hope I can catch a break, because it's something I'd enjoy doing. It seems like a really cool course too, I actually get to take a class on 'The evolution of Modern Music'. I love that kind of stuff. I'm always watching those "Behind the music" and "Back in 83, 84, 85 and so on..." shows on MuchMoreMusic. Ironically, I don't really listen to much music past the 1970's.
Ayoye! I'm so young and idealistic. It's pretty bad. And the sad part is I've become much more cynical/mature in the last year. Got a long way to go.
Speaking of finding jobs, I'm finding it tough to find any kind of job around here. I've dropped off resume's allover downtown but there hasn't been much success lately. The bills are starting to pile up:ughh

Hey Wilkerson_Rulz I went to Stanislas for one year and a half in CE2 and CM1, maybe we had similar teachers:D . I sure hope not though one of em was a mean old child beater:mad: .
Aright I'm Martin and was born in Montreal in 1986. From there due to my fathers job I went to Germany when I was around 1. After that I lived in Toronto for 3 years, I slightly remember watching the Blue Jays winning their first world series in 92, although I don't remember them celebrating, it must have been past my bedtime:D . After Toronto, my father was send to Burundi Africa with us, after 2 and a half years due to similar events to those in Rwanda, we needed to be evacuated and me, my sister and my mother lived in Montreal where I attended le Collège Stanislas. After my father came back we lived in Bonn, Germany for three years (my father is german and so am I). After three years (you get the pattern:D ) we were sent to San Francisco, where the city pleased us so much that we decided to stay for 2 more years. I came to Montreal last year to study law at the University of Montreal, but am now in a polyvalent program after I realised that law was really not my thing. I'm amassing credits this semester to try and get into criminology at U of Montreal next year. Wish me luck:o .
I went to my first baseball game after being brought there by my uncle around the time I was 9. I saw a Henry Rodriguez Home run and the fireworks and was amazed. I really only started to follow baseball when I went to San Francisco though, when the home run chase of Barry Bonds made me a sort of bandwagoner. It's to bad I came to Montreal just in time to catch their few last home games. I went to the last home game and tears were coming ot of my eyes when Guerrero flashed on the big screen:ughh .

It is in the South-West of the Netherlands. When you can find Breda, it is a little to the left. It is a town/village of about 40,000 inhabitants, merged out of two villages: Etten and Leur. I am living in Leur (the better part of it :D ).

What was the experience of living in Africa like? Would you consider going back to live on the continent or is that out of a question?

As a child I had loved Burundi, me, my sister and my friends would play in our gardens in the sun, swimm in a pool, and we would visit surrounding countries with our parents, all of this while there would be civil war happening around us, without me really understanding it due to my young age. The machinegunshots that we would sometimes hear at night would entertain us more then scare us, and the fact that we would have to lie down on the ground at our school would seem as normal as a fire drill. So as a child I think the experience was wonderful but my parents must have sometimes been scared for us.
Looking back on it now, I don't think the danger was really that important for us, the war was civil, and the two tribes would fight amongst each other and exept for some very rare cases (I only remember one) there were never any attacks on occidentals. Even so, we were the ones who were evacuated and taken care of more then the Burundians.
I believe that if the occasion presented itself, I would gladly accept to go to Africa another time. I think it is a great place to live, the weather is wonderful, the nature is beautiful, and even though most people over there do not live under good conditions, they look much happier than a lot of people of the occidental world. I think that as a child the experience of Africa had great effects on my way of thinking and my personality, as I was not for a while drawn to the tv as we only had one channel, and would go outside to play. If I ever have children I would love for them to experience that, as well as catch the contagious smile and happiness of the Burundians, I would also save money by not buying them Prozac:D .
I have not met Cyprien Ntaryamira, but my father has, only on an official basis. As you may have guessed he is a diplomat, and it was part of his job. I could not expand on the subject as I don't remember what my father had told me about him.

Were the school you attended/ neighborhood you lived in solely for diplomats and their families? I guess my question is, did you spend those 2 years isolated from native Burundians or did you interact with "the locals"
Looking back on it now, I don't think the danger was really that important for us, the war was civil, and the two tribes would fight amongst each other and exept for some very rare cases (I only remember one) there were never any attacks on occidentals. I would love to go to Africa, perhaps for a prolonged period of time. For it's unique cultures, the sights, the sounds... after all, it's the birthplace of humanity. But on the other hand, I'm kind of hypochondriac. So the diseases, the bugs, the food... It may take a while before I go there...
One thing I really want to do before I die is throw the football around with someone in the shadow of the great pyramids of Egypt. I guess I could start my african explorations by northern Africa and build from there.
I have not met Cyprien Ntaryamira, but my father has, only on an official basis. As you may have guessed he is a diplomat, and it was part of his job. I could not expand on the subject as I don't remember what my father had told me about him.
I indeed tought that you might hail from a diplomatic family. I kind of took a stab at it.
I always tought Ntaryamira and his Rwandeese counterpart, Juvenal Habyarimana had really cool names. But I know very little about both of them. You would have to believe that they shoulder part of the responsability for what happened after they were assasinated.

If I remember well, it was at the Olympics in Sarajevo.
Then hit it and learn a little more of our esteemed alpine heros. :laugh

I hope you don't think I'm trying to dicourage you of going into the business. There are worse ways to earn a living then speaking into a microphone and playing records (assistant crack whore would come to mind...). But it's a tough go. Tough you'd have to believe that having a much bigger potential market will give you an edge I don't have (I don't believe I could do professsionnal radio in english. Might be quite the struggle).
Have you, or do you currently do community access radio? In high school perhaps? It's a great way not only to learn the tricks of the trade, but also to see if you really love doing it. I know I've done like 200 shows on public access/ student radio in my life, and there hasn't been one instance where I would have rather been somewhere else. That kind of tells me that perhaps it's the right place for me.
Maybe we could get a show, on CKUT or something. The AG-OG hour. Maybe we've got something there. :)

The only two basketball teams that'll play the Bell Center with any kind of success in our lifetime are the Harlem Globetrotters and the New York Nationals. Besides that, I really don't see it happening.

My High School was a school with the bare minimum. It was a small rural school so it didn't offer any thing besides the bare essentials. We didn't even have a thrid language class like German or Spanish. Higher level courses like grade 12 University Physics or Chemistry were offered only every second year. It was pretty pathetic.
I think I'd really enjoy working in radio but I guess I'll find out for certain next fall. As for the AG-OG hour, hmmmm. It could work!:radio :radio

Were the school you attended/ neighborhood you lived in solely for diplomats and their families? I guess my question is, did you spend those 2 years isolated from native Burundians or did you interact with "the locals"
I would interact with the Burundians that would be in my school at the Lycee Français de Bumjumbura. We would also have our cook (it sounds snobbish as hell, but anyone hailing from the occidental world would have one in Burundi) Atanas who would babysit us when my parents were gone, and when the political climate worsened, him and the other staff would bring their families at our house, and I would play with their children. As I said, none of them really had anything and some of them were hit by sorrow (some of them lost their childrens or wifes), but they would still not go down and give up, and would still smile and laugh, something I have the deepest respect for. So when I see people complaining here because they have too much work or the winter is too cold (which this year would be just ridiculous, 7 celsius in January! ), I kind of just laugh at it. But from time to time I complain, I'm still a francophone at heart:laugh .
I survived it, but after Burundi, the people at our schools would always be amazed by how many vaccinations we had in our booklet:D, as long as you take your medication you should be fine. The African continent is beautiful, sometimes I wish I wasn't that young when I lived there so I would have realised it. Egypt is supposedly beautiful, but very dirty, according to my parents who lived there in the 80's. But I want to go there one day too, preferably before it expands into an even bigger tourist country. Burundi probably doesn't look the same as when I was there also. Africa is also changing. A friend of mine from Senegal said that individualism is the norm over there now.
I always tought Ntaryamira and his Rwandeese counterpart, Juvenal Habyarimana had really cool names. But I know very little about both of them. You would have to believe that they shoulder part of the responsability for what happened after they were assasinated.
If you are looking for cool names, look no other place than Madagaskar, a friend of mine is from there and his last name is Randriambololona, they are longer and easier to say:laugh . I don't remember the Rwandan case that much, although I have lately informed myself more about it (watching movies, a documentary about Romeo D'Allaire which I recommend), but in Burundi's case, Ntaryamira's predecessor's assasination started the whole situation. Of course Ntaryamira death must have worsened the situation.

Hello everyone.
I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but I've been browsing this forum for a while now, and I felt I should introduce myself. My name is Gabe and I'm a huge Expos fan. I went to many of their games during their last few seasons. Truthfully, I didn't really fall in love with them until after they had left. I guess I didn't really realize how fortunate I was to have the 'Spos, until they were gone.
It's nice to have this forum here. I have strong feelings about many issues and topics that have to do with the Expos and I look forward to conversing with other Expos fans out there. I also want to say that, living in west-central New Hampshire, there are an unbelievable amount of Expos fans here. I feel, that if Montreal was ever to get another MLB team, and one with good management and financial security, they would really be supported. One thing I also want to say is that, Olympic Stadium was my favorite stadium in the MLB. I don't understand why everyone ridiculed and bashed it. I always enjoyed it much more than Fenway. It had a great atmosphere during Expos games.
Personally, I love to collect Expos souvenirs and memorabilia. They've obviously become harder to come by in the past couple years, but that makes it all the more fun. I have several hundred autographed baseball cards of Expos players and coaches, and their minor league affiliates, primarily the Vermont Expos. One of my favorite pieces is a a 2004 game-used jersey of Josh Labandeira.
My favorite former Expos are Jamey Carroll, Brian Schneider, Peter Bergeron, Brad Mills, and Rusty Staub.
Again, I've really enjoyed reading all the threads here and I hope to contribute to more in the future. Thanks for reading and Bring Back the Expos!

Welcome to the Expos board, Gabe!
Feel free to discuss anything and everything about the Expos. Always good to get new people, new experiences, new memories of our favorite team.
Regarding memorabilia, it's a bit odd beaucuse now that Expos gear, caps expecially, are vintage, it's become very fashionable for young people in Montréal to wear them. We see much more Expos caps on the street now then when the team was actually playing. Doesent make sense, but I guess that's life.
Again, welcome aboard!

Hi Gus and all expo fans. I'm originally from montreal, as my nickname would hint at, and always loved the Expos. As a 10 year old, i was at the opening game back in 1969, and was back in Montreal with more than a tear or two in my eye at the final home game in 2004. I went to West Hill High, and then to dawson CEGEP during the late '70s. I have been fortunate to have lived out west, but now live in Nova Scotia, I have 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren. I noticed one the the other posters has an interest in broadcasting. I was in the business myself for a few years, and still do mobile DJing. I was the king of late night radio in Yellowknife in '82-'83!
