Does anybody know what the record is for the most errors committed by a team in a season? Actually, I'd like records for pre and post WWII. Thanks in advance.

Pre WW II : 1883 Philadelphia (NL), 639.
Post WW II : 1945 Philadelphia (NL), 234 or 1946 Washington (AL), 211.
Last time a team had 200 or errors was the 1963 NY Mets with 208.

Detroit holds the 20th century record for most errors committed. They had 401 in 1901.

I tink it might be relevant to add that, as time goes by, the number of errors decreases substantially. For instance, during the 2000-2005 decade, so far, the team with the most errors is San Diego in 2001, with 145.

Yeah, well I was doing a Retrosheet project and happened to notice that the Dodgers made 179 errors in 1986 and that number struck me as particularly high, especially for recent times. I remembered that in '03, I believe, the sports pages in NYC were constantly berating the Mets (and rightly so) for their absolutely atrocious defense. I remembered that they finished the season with between 135-139 errors or so. When I noticed that the Dodgers made 40 more than that in '86, I thought to myself that has to be at least somewhat close to the modern record.
I wonder what was most errors an above .500 team made since like the 70's or so.

Question about this: which team led the Major Leagues in errors in the modern baseball era? (1970s to present day) I don't know this as a fact, but I knew a couple people that made FOUR errors in ONE inning...

The 1971 National League West Division champions, the San Francisco Giants, with 177 errors. :)

Thanks a lot, this one was just pure curiosity.
That's pretty incredible, they did have some potent offense that year though and were able to squak out the division by one game.
