How many of you have seen this movie? Just watched it last night (with my 7-year old, baseball-obsessed son). Uhhhh, I must say that I spent much of the time covering his eyes and ears. I should have known better, but I simply couldn't resist watching it with him. He did laugh out loud when Tanner was abusing the unfortunate runners that he could catch between 2nd and 3rd! At any rate, if you loved the original, then the remake is at least worthy of one viewing. It's pretty funny, and Billy Bob Thornton does justice to the beloved Buttermaker that many of us grew up watching Walter Mattheau play.

yeah i watched it and the original with my kids - i cringed - the original was none too tame either - i guess pg meant something different in the 1970s

Agreed. The movie has some classic youth baseball moments, but the PG-13 rating is hard to believe. I watched the original more than once as a kid, and I don't think it scarred me too much. I think it's all in the approach the parents take when watching it with their kids. At any rate, I'll probably buy the remake to add to my baseball movie collection.

it's more all the racial slurs - the original is worse as far as that goes

My coach took my entire baseball team to see it. Most of us were 12, and coach seemed kind of shocked at what they said.

I've got little to no interest; unless it winds up getting rave reviews in this thread I'll "stay the course" on this one.
After the holidays my son came home with this movie for his new psp player and after watching it for 20 minutes we went back up to Wal-Mart and exchanged it! I should have known any movie with Billie Bob was going to be aweful. I still prefer the original!

I still have never seen the remake and don't really care to. I am a fan of the original though.

I laughed quite a few times while watching this- but you oughta know going into this that Billy Bob is not really kid friendly. Several people found this out when taking their kids to see "Bad Santa" a few years back when that hit the theaters...

I haven't seen the remake. It can't be any worse than the two sequels, though. Very little in filmdom is worse than the Tony Curtis-Antonio Inoki wrestling match in Bad News Bears Go to Japan.

I avoided the remake--I'm with CAV as far as Billy Bob Thornton. Reviews said it was more PC than the original but also raunchier. The original was fantastic. When it came out, I was about the same age as Tatum O'Neal was in the movie. I saw it and loved it with no negative consequences to my psyche. My husband and I ended up watching the original a few months back on cable, laughing like crazy the entire time. There are definitely "un-PC" lines in the original, but it has a certain innocence and charm that you don't often see in modern kids films.
The original is on-demand with comcast at the moment. Widescreen and uncut. Have yet to catch the remake.
