I'd like to see if we, as a group here at this fine forum, can exact a change in Major League Baseball. I'd like to see if we can harness the power of the internet and mass media techiniques to give a well known player in baseball a nickname. A nickname that was created and started here at B-Feve.
Here's what I propose:
We as group campaign across the globe to get Derek Jeter a new nickname - Spork. Yep. Spork. It's perfect. Who better than Jeter truly needs a nickname in MLB? Hello!
He's neither a great fielder or a great hitter, but has nearly outstanding skills in both areas. One of the reason's that KFC created the half spoon/fork thing that is all the craze in fast food dining today isbecasue of its unique versatility. It fits Jeter perfectly.
So here's my plan. We start calling Jeter "Spork" at every chance we get - on-line, at sports bars, in bordellos or churches - and eventually the nickname will stick.
Don't be surprised to hear Al Michaels intriduce the Yankee line up at next year's World Series with:
"...And batting second for the Yankees, the always reliable Spork Jeter....."
Work with me on this people.

But, for dear old Baseball-Fever, I'll take the bordello territory. I'd do churches as well, but I'm a creature of habit, and it'd be messy if I got the two mixed up.

Dude, have you ever used a spork? It will cut through mashed potatoes, cole slaw and chicken with ease, reducing the need for KFC to have to pack both a spoon and a fork in to go orders. It is the best number two utensil in fast food history. Did you know that CIA agents are trained to use sporks to silently assasinate subversives?
Rest assured, I have a long standing reputation on this forum for being as serious about this beloved game as anybody. My postings will back that up.
Mocking? I think not!

I prefer Derek "incredibly overrated, wouldn't even know his name if he didn't play in front of the most obnoxious and self-absorbed fans in the world" Jeter.

Self absorbed? Absolutely. If it doesn't happen in New York, it doesn't matter, or else it would have happened in New York.
Obnoxious? Possibly, but, again, only in the view of people who don't matter. Nobody has seemed to care at all what New Yorkers think for the last four years or so, so it's only fitting that New Yorkers return the favor.
As to the nickname... unless he suffers a severe dropoff, Jeter will end his career every bit as good of a player as guys like Joe Cronin, Frankie Frisch, or Robbie Alomar. It's very possible that he'll finish his major league career in the top 10 all time in both hits (he'll need to play till he's 40 and average 153 hits a year) and runs (he'll need to play till he's 40 and average 81 runs a year). So yes, I think it's perfectly reasonable to suspect that you'd have a very good idea what his name is even if he played out in the middle of nowhere like Kansas City or Cincinnati.

Suggesting we plant the moniker "Spork" on Jeter was silly enough. To imply Jeter is not a top flight player is even sillier. To even suggest Jeter would be as well known had he played for the anyone but a perennial play-off team is naive.
