They would have nothing to lose to try this. It would be interesting to see if he could get it back together. It the same as St. Louis signing Ponson, for $1M no less!

After having a day to digest this, I don't think it will happen. The link below takes you to the Washington Post story. Read between the lines: Bowden's denial of a scheduled meeting with Sosa over dinner, the other Nationals outfielders, guaranteed money in Japan. It just doesn't add up. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave Sammy a look see in ST, even a minor league deal.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/11/AR2006011102278.html

With the Nationals payroll and a commitment to younger players, it seems even Bowden wouldn't make this deal.

I quit panicking.

From that Post article you could infer that Sammy was having dinner with one of his agents and it did not necessarily include Bowden. This team has no owner, lame duck management, and is trying to get a stadium built in a "city" that is intent on stickin' to the man. This is exactly the kind of player you take a flyer on! . . . since you have nothing to lose!

Good point. Let's hope it doesn't progress further. Sammy can talk it over with agent while splitting a lunch at Subway. Hold the Clyde's reservations.

wr, I understand you're not from the area, so you have an excuse. When it comes to the Examiner, most around here would line bird cages or use the pages of the Examiner for packing away fragile items...prior to the paper being read.

I haven't looked at the Examiner paper in months. Their lead sports writer always claimed inside info, which never came through when he said it would. Several times he was just flat out dead wrong in his reporting. Maybe he's gone now.

It did surprise me to Phil Wood writing for them now. He's a great Senators historian and pretty knowledgeable baseball guy. He adds a bit more credence to the sports reporting for that rag.

The minor league contract and a look see in Viera is the same thing I said several days ago. I could Phil in that respect.

The Nationals and Sosa's representatives did talk:http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060120&content_id=1298443&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was

The good news remains:
Bowden was not available for comment, but the source said the two parties are in a friendly disagreement on the kind of contract Sosa should get. The Nationals want to give him a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training (I could be Jim Bowden  ), while Sosa wants a guaranteed contract with a decent salary. Last season, Sosa made over $17 million and is not expected to get close to that amount.

Even if Sammy does put on a good show in ST I can't see him taking a roster spot until he can prove himself. If that means Triple A, so be it. I would rather the current OFs get the playing time. But I can't see Sosa opting for a AAA contract from the gist of this article.

:radio From an interview with Jose Gullien this afternoon.

http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=398&sid=682478

Gullien says his shoulder was basically reconstructed over the off season and he may not be ready until May.

This has got to be the reason the Nats are even considering Sosa for a minor league deal-a weak insurance policy and hoping against hope Sosa finds himself. At least Bowden has restrained himself and sticks to the non-guaranteed minor league deal.

What is the point of having Anderson, Jackson, Tucker, Fick, Watson, Church, Escobar, and Godwin on that depth chart if we are just going to sign Sammy Sosa when one of our starters goes down?

I do completely loathe Sammy Sosa, but if they're giving him minimal money (which is appears they are), I'm not opposed to it. I guess there may be a very, very small chance he'll return to be a pretty good slugger. It's not like they're putting a lot of mony on the table and taking a big risk with him. From what I understand it's a "whatever we get is a bonus" mentality trade.

The Nationals are banking on a long shot and aren't willing to put a whole into it-non-guaranteed money and the offer of a minor league contract. If Sosa shows poor in ST there a real good chance he wouldn't take a minor league deal when he doesn't travel north in April. I understand he has offers from Japan and could go that instead.

I don't think the Nationals are counting a whole lot on Sammy staying with the organization. Kind of like catching lightening in a bottle with very little money down.

Hopefully Guillen makes a better than expected recovery like Vidro apparently is...

I also want Bowden to do Soriano for Adam Dunn more after this article:

Dunn says he played most of season with broken hand (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2309889)

Any LF/1B who plays 160 games and hits 40 HRs, has a near .400 OBP, can steal 20 bases, and only commit 5 field error WITH A BROKEN HAND (Soriano won't even play if he is 15 ft from 2B) is somebody we need on our ball club.

Oh yeah. Dunn is and will be a great player for years to come in this league. On the Sosa point, I honestly don't think we need him. Why take away from the young guys like Church Watson and Byrd by bringing in Sosa. I understand that we are giving him minimal money and not taking much of a risk, but I really do not think it is necessary.

Love the Cubs 23

I hope it doesn't get done, but if you remember Washington wanted to trade for Samme before he was trade to Baltimore. Personally I think Sosa should hang up his spikes. He had some great years for the CUBS, but He was most likely on Roids, and is to proud to admit it. Face it Baltimore made a mistake by trading for him, but the CUBS got the better of the deal Hairston and Murton. It's time for Samme to retire to D.R.

THE CUBS WILL BE IN THE MIX IN 2006

The linked article concerns the signings of Rodriguez and Clayton, but noteworthy is the last paragraph, Nationals Notes.

Nationals Notes: Bowden said there was nothing new to report and no new talks scheduled between the team and free agent slugger Sammy Sosa, whom the Nationals have tried to lure with an offer of a non-guaranteed, minor league contract. Sosa apparently is willing to wait to see if another team offers a guaranteed deal.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/02/AR2006020202198.html

It appears Sammy isn't all that hot to jump on the Nationals offer. Maybe it would behoove him to orient himself toward the land of the rising sun.

It does my heart good to see Bowden isn't going off the deep end here.
