--The Opening series' have been played and results are up in the schedule thread. The good news for everyone is there were no injuries. The Knights and Gamblers can also celebrate sweeps.
--If there were injuries to be dealt with, I'd wait until tommorrow to play the next series'. Since there weren't, the next batch of games will be played later today. I'm going to bed now. I'll check for any updates in the morning before playing the next series.
--Please use this thread for any in-season business. The draft thread has pretty much served its purpose. The rules thread can continue to support that purpose. Keep your roster updated if you make changes, but make sure anything that will require me to make an update is clearly stated here to ensure your roster is updated in the program.

EH - You have me a little confused, maybe Mark knows what is going on. You have Mike McCormick listed as your #4 starting pitcher, but I don't find him on your roster anywhere. I see Joe Gibbon listed. Did I miss a move somewhere? Please let me know, so I can get the staffs correct in OOTP before I sim any games. Thanks!

Didn't take any prisoners, huh, Mark?;)

--I don't really understand where McCormick came from either. I just stuck Gibbon in that spot as he was earlier on the roster.
--I did get off to a pretty rip roaring start. I won't get too cocky until I've played some real teams though. My first 2 series were against doormats (series 2 results up in a few minutes). I'll be disappointed if I don't win 80% of my games against them.

Scott - Mark showed you one short on your 25 man active roster after you dropped De La Hoz, but I showed that bringing you down to the 25 man limit. Must have missed something there, too, but based on your rosters you show 25 on the active roster. So I put Tuttle in AAA.

Mark, maybe you can help here. I show his active roster (after dropping De La Hoz) as: Burgess, Averill, Sievers, Fox, K. Boyer, Aparicio, B. Williams, Snider, Maris,Kasko, Ashburn, F. Alou, Spencer, Bilko, Spahn, Pizzaro, Monbouquette, Terry, McBride, Wilhelm, T. Fox, Shantz, Hoeft, Brosnan and Willey. That's 25, so maybe someone got sent down I missed.

BTW Scott, you also only had one player listed per position, which is OK, but any subs in OOTP will be computer picked. If you want to set subs/percentages to control it better, let me know.

--I show Willey in the minors. I directly downloaded the team file Scott e-mailed me and didn't compare it to what he later posted. Since we aren't even playing the same schedule in the mirror league, a minor difference here and there probably isn't a big deal anyway (are you going to account for injuries?).
--Injuries in the 2nd series are Larry Jackson (10/0 served) and Frank Howard (3/2), both of the Gamblers. Chris Short of the Phillies also has a 4 game injury.

Mark:

I changed a few things. The Gamblers manager would just like to use More Relievers instead of Most Relievers.

Also, Larry Jackson was moved to the minors while Jim Perry has come up to the majors to fill that role. I forgot if it was all right to move an injured player to the minors.

Lastly, I just wanted to mention Frank Howard's not on my team.

Posted by Mark:
I show Willey in the minors.

He must have changed something in the file he sent you from what he has posted. In the roster thread, he has Willey listed as his spot starter, so I went with that.

Yes, the game automatically tracks injuries. It will ask if you want to put the injured player on the DL or not. If you do, of course, then you can call up a replacement player. Of course, as you mention, the schedules and everything else will vary, including injuries.

I will also make those changes to Dude's Gamblers before I run any sims. I will be simming one week at a time (OOTP will do daily, weekly, monthly or season, but not series like DM, so I figured weekly would work best).

leecemark

--DM actually only does daily or full season. I just run 3 days worth of sims to complete the series.

Sorry Mark, forgot to add these to my roster page earlier. My pinch-hitting assignments are:

PH vs. RHP - Tito Francona, Gordy Coleman, Dick Stuart
PH vs. LHP - Dick Stuart, Jim, Landis, Tito Francona, Gordy Coleman

--Dude, you can not demote an injured player. Jackson either has to go on the 15 day DL or you play short for the 10 days he is out.
--Howard is on the Cannons and is out the next 2 games.

I simmed the first week of OOTP. I will list the scores here, but see the notes below. If everyone is comfortable with checking scores from the league website and has time to do so, I won't list them in the future. Please post here or PM me to let me know.

Injuries in first four games: Bob Friend, sore elbow, day to day
Ron Santo, sore shoulder, day to day

Opening day had some real pitching gems:
In JW's game vs the Senators, Bob Johnson hit a HR in the top of the first with one out for the Nats. They didn't muster another hit over the next 10.2 innings. JW wins in 11 with Schwall, McDaniel and Perranoski giving up only the one hit over 11 innings.
Jim Perry threw 8.1 shutout innings, with the relievers finishing up, in Dude's 2-0 whitewashing of the Phils.
Curt Simmons allowed 2 hits in 8 IP, with Frank Funk pitching a hitless ninth, in the Knight's 4-0 shutout win over the REdbirds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I strongly encourage all managers to check out the line scores and box scores of their teams' games. If you go to the main screen (Keeper League Main Page) here (http://www.geocities.com/lougehrig24/baseball/index.html), you will see the standings, with access to any of the reports shown. If you scroll down to Schedule and click on Past Boxscores, the games will all be listed by line score:

I will be uploading the box scores for the last 14 days each time I sim a week. I will leave them up for a couple of days, as I expect to sim a week every three or four days.

Additionally, if you click on any player listed in a box score, it will bring up his season stats.

Clicking on a team name from the main screen will bring up that team's info screen, with all sorts of info. I encourage everyone to explore the stats. One of the items on the team screen is the team injury report, listing all players who are injured and their status. Another section lists email messages, at the very bottom of the page. These are computer generated and give various info about players, fan base reaction, etc. Again, I encourage you to read all of the info.

I'm a little concerned about stats already. I based the figures for the game engine on the 1961 season and ran some sims to verify them. Unfortunately, this is only a 12 team league, and not having the other six teams in the league could result in some VERY skewed stats. I've seen this before in OOTP when you are doing a fantasy league based on a real season , but without the correct number of teams (I had three players hit 100+ HR in that league). If it persists, I will reset the league and add six teams to the NL in OOTP just to try and even things out. But when I see Mantle and Maris both with 3 HR already, I get a bit nervous.

catcher24

BTW, interesting emails arrived for the REdbirds, Gamblers and the doormats.
All were from players who advised their teams they will retire after the season. Six could be expected, but one was a real shocker.
Redbirds: Hoyt Wilhelm, Diomedes Olivo
Gamblers: Stan Musial
KC: Jim Rivera, Gerry Staley
Phils: Elmer Valo
Senators: Gene Woodling

Oh wow, Wilhelm's going to retire already? That could put a damper on the teams relief pitching.

KK Mark, I'm putting Jackson on the 15 day DL then.

leecemark

--Don't know if something that that can be reversed in OOTP or not. Apparently guys career paths in that program are only loosely based on their real ones. Wilhelm should be a top reliever in the DM program for the course of the decade though.

catcher24
01-07-2006, 06:21 PM
Yeah, I think there are several ways to reverse it. I think when 1962 is imported, he will simply come along. If not, I can always create a player with the same ratings and name, and since his stats will import for 1962 he'll be there. But that is the type of curve that OOTP can throw you in a career league. OOTP is, I think, designed more for the career type league than a single season replay. Although we will be covering careers in DM, what it boils down to is many consecutive years of single season replays. There is more continuity in OOTP in the other leagues I use it for. In those, I have a player's AI evaluation setup (ie, season results) not only based on the present year's stats, but also based somewhat on the previous two years stats as well as ratings weight. So there are four areas the game is using to evaluate the player. I think it might make a difference basing the result on the player's one season stats, especially since the game engine is designed more to use the player's ratings rather than the straight stats. In Wilhelm's case, I think the game looked at the ages of these players and marked them for retirement after this season. Remember, in 1961 Wilhelm was already 38 years old, and I think that's what OOTP is looking at.

Incidentally, the new version is supposed to have a completely redesigned game engine, so I'll be interested in seeing how that works.

Dude - I didn't realize that you had sent Jackson down due to an injury. Since he wasn't injured in OOTP, I have put him back into the #1 spot in your rotation and sent Perry back down.

--Its been great fun beating up on the doormats, but I'm not sure this reflects the real talent level of my club. In fact, I'm sure it doesn't. My first 12 games have all been against the designated losers. I'm looking forward to my first test in the upcoming series vs the Hard Cider.

Roster adjusted to reflect trade. Basically Purkey in Spahns spot, and now a R/L platoon at 1B with Bilko and White. Alou slots into Bilko's old spot in RF.

I still have a couple of solid starters on the block, namely Juan Pizzarro and Richie Ashburn. Both could contribute to a contender, and Pizzarro would be a #2 for a lot of teams.

I have a question, Mark. I know it's possible to have a lower slugging % than OBP, but I didn't think it was possible to have a lower slugging % than BA. Any idea how that could happen?

PAP, the fans werem't happy that you let Spahnie go, but trading for Purkey helped some. It was kind of a wash for Mac. The fans were happy he picked up Spahn and Sievers, but not real happy to see Purkey go. No mention of poor Bill White, who seems to have become a real travelling man.

PAP, I updated your roster and lineups. Mac, I updated your roster, but you haven't updated your lineups yet.

I ran another week, this time a full week, with OOTP. Linescores are posted below. I'll ask again, do you want me to post these, or just let you know when they are uploaded? I strongly encourage everyone to go to the website and check out all the stats: league leaders, team batting & pitching, etc.

Injuries: Pancho Herrera, Phils - sprained ankle, day to day.
Jim Kaat, Dude's Gamblers - Inflamed elbow, day to day.

Players of the week: First week (short 4 day one) - George Altman, Quakers. He batted .556 in 18 AB, with 1 HR and 6 RBI
Most recent week: Don Hoak, Diablos. He batted .500 in 30 AB, with 1 HR and 9 RBI

Frank Robinson (Hard Cider) hit for the cycle against the Cannons:
Friday 4/9/1961: Mac's Hard Cider's Frank Robinson hits for the cycle
538280 CANNONS - Mac's Hard Cider's rightfielder Frank Robinson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up 538280 Cannons' pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Friday. A single in the 1st off Mudcat Grant accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Dick Lemay in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. His 3rd hit, off Dick Lemay in the 5th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. A pitch from Tom Brewer in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Frank did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 14 hits this season, accounting for a .318 batting average. 1 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Frank.

If anyone is interested in highest game scores (batters and pitchers), click on Performances on the left side, main report screen.
To see any team's batter/pitcher stats, click on the team name, then choose Batting STats or Pitching Stats in the team Reports & News section.

I hope everyone takes advantage of the opportunity to chcek out their batters and pitchers stats. If you would prefer, I could copy and paste them all here, but that seems rather redundant to me, since we all haave internet access to the league website and all the reports.

Any questions, comments or concerns - fire away!

I guess Taussig is somehow taking over Rodgers' ABs. If he keeps that up I might give him more starting PT. But why does Allison have so few ABs?

Move Skowron to the 15 Day DL.

Malzone will come up from the minors to fill his role as backup, or starter until Killebrew gets back, then backup for the few days until Skowron comes off the 15 day.

Ok, thanks for the input (you too, PAP). Mac - if you like the interesting highlights (I will try to catch most of them and post),click on the General News and Breaking News links at the top left of the Keeper League Main Page. The General News has short blurbs on newsworthy items, like these:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEAGUE NEWS

Monday 4/5/1961 :
AL-Player of the Week:
RF George Altman (NQU)!
He batted .556 in 18 AB, with 1 HR and 6 RBI.

Tuesday 4/6/1961 :
NQU: Maury Wills sets a new single game AL-Record for Hits with 5!

Friday 4/9/1961 :

The Breaking News has a longer story about one or more items. That's where I got the story about Robbie's cycle from.

I'm really glad to see that some of you are taking advantage of the website. Any comments or suggestions, feel free. This is a learning experience for me, having never done a website before. Thankfully, the program makes it easy, but it is still a learning experience!

Simmed another week in OOTP. This brings most teams to 16 games (a couple have 17). Stats are looking good comparing them to DM stats, so I think I got the game engine adjusted pretty well. I have posted the standings and some highlights below. All box scores and updated stats, for those interested, will be uploaded to the website shortly. Should be available in an hour or so.

New injuries:
PHP: Bobby Malkmus was injured while throwing a ball.
Diagnosis: Sore Shoulder.
He is day-to-day, but full recovery will take 3 days.
PAP: Billy Hoeft was injured while pitching.
Diagnosis: Pulled Elbow Ligament.
He is day-to-day, but full recovery will take 1-2 weeks.

Camilo Pascual (Legends) pitched a three hit shutout against the Senators on 4-17-61.
Jim Landis of the Quakers blasted a mammoth 501 foot HR vs the Cannons (in a losing cause). (4-16-61)
Player of the week was Camilo Pascual of the Knights. He went 2-0 for week, hurling 18 innings with a 1.50 ERA, including the shutout noted above.
And one line score I HAD to post:
....................FINAL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Washington ............2 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 4 12 4
Leecemark's Knights 3 4 0 1 4 0 8 0 X 20 22 0
Box Scores - WP: Curt Simmons LP: Gene Conley

The Knights pound the Senators, cracking out 22 hits (you've gotta check out the boxscore, Mark. Every starter got at least one hit, and three guys got 3 hits).

Again, the standings and all box scores will be up on the website shortly. Please check it out.

You were complaining about injuries, but I lost Rodgers, Taussig and Piersall! I don't want to get swept by the Senators! :laugh

I see that stats have started for the minor leauges now... in which case please move Edwards and McDowell to AA. I don't know how the program found stats for those guys, but so be it. Thanks!

The other option is to move everyone's prospects to AAA in which case there'll be some semblance of a team for everyone. I don't know how the program would respond though. Come to think of it, Edwards is noted as not being ready for AAA but he's looking fine to me! (304/429/435 in 23 ABs)

Lew, I'm pretty sure we're not using DHs in your sim, but I do realize that on our team profiles you do have lineups with DHs. You have Willie Kirkland leadoff on on my against RHPwDH lineup. I definitely don't want Kirkland leading off on any of my lineups. I don't think we're using it, but could you please change that so it has Albie Pearson in right and batting leadoff?

The program just sims the minors in the background, using the players on hand and filling in the other slots. Not sure myself how it does that!:laugh
I can move everyone's farm hands to AAA. The game makes provision for at least 25 players at each level.

Will do, Mac, and I'll make the necessary adjustments. Apparently your subs didn't fare too badly, since you're currently on an 11 game winning streak!!;) Are you sure you want me to make any changes?:p Your record for last 10 is 10-0. I think I've only seen that once or twice over several seasons of simming solo leagues.

Chris - Don't worry, the game doesn't use the lineups with DH, since the default is no DH. Everyone's lineups with DH are screwed up, because those are computer generated at this point. I didn't change anyone's, so don't worry. It will have no effect on your team for the season. But I will change it to make you feel better (maybe change your luck).

I simmed another week in OOTP. I wanted to do two weeks to get close to the same number of games Mark has simmed in DM, but quit after the one week due to a couple of major injuries. I wanted those managers to be able to make any adjustments they feel necessary.

First, the injuries:

Mac's Hard Cider: Sandy Koufax was injured while pitching.
Diagnosis: Strained Elbow Ligament.
He is day-to-day, but full recovery will take 7 weeks.

Dudecar Gamblers: Stan Musial was injured while making a catch.
Diagnosis: Broken Finger.
He is out for about 3 weeks.

JW Skipjacks: Barry Latman was injured while pitching.
Diagnosis: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle.
He will be OK in about 4 weeks.

WSE: Gene Woodling was injured while making a catch.
Diagnosis: Bruised Hand.
He is day-to-day, but full recovery will take 2 days.

PHP: John Buzhardt was injured while pitching.
Diagnosis: Inflamed Back Muscle.
He is day-to-day, but full recovery will take one week.

I will wait until tomorrow to sim the next week. Let me know what moves, if any, you want to make regarding these injuries.

NEWS: Jim Gentile of the Knights set a record with 4 walks in a game.

Player of the Week: Jackie Brandt, of my own Legends.
AL-Player of the Week: CF Jackie Brandt (LLE)! He batted .476 in 21 AB, with 2 HR and 7 RBI.

And the full story on Koufax's injury:
MAC'S HARD CIDER - Mac's Hard Cider's ace Sandy Koufax suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 7th of the game against Lew's Legends he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Koufax was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Elbow Ligament. In 5 starts this year Sandy struck out 29 batters in 30.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.70, his record 2-1.

The Senators continued their horrid season. Although they doubled their wins from 1 to 2, they have also doubled their losses from 10 to 20 and now stand at a dismal (understatement) 2-20.

Mac's Hard Cider continue to set the pace in batting - 1st in HR, 1st in Runs, 2nd in Batting Average, 3rd in walks, 2nd in OBP, 1st in slugging.

In the pitching department, the (surprise) Phillies have the best team ERA at 3.82, with the Quakers right behind at 3.84. Senators pitchers are getting pummeled, with a 5.91 team ERA.

Ah well... so Koufax is out for 7 weeks right, not day to day? In that case, I will put Brown in the rotation for OOTP.

In DM, I'd like to take Hank Aguirre off his closer and set-up duties and make him available as a backup in long relief and mop-up situations. Is it possible to program more than one backup in those roles?

Chris - For some strange reason, lefties don't always do well in DM - in fact, based on the two previous leagues I've been in, they seem to usually do worse than in real life. That might be the case with Ford and O'Toole. I do agree with Mark - I think over the long haul, they'll tend to come back closer to their real life performances.

catcher24
01-14-2006, 07:13 AM
Mac - ACtually Koufax is day to day, if you check the injury news on the website. If you actually had the game, once you had downloaded your updated team stats you would see that Koufax's name is in orange, indicating injured but day to day. If you then clicked on his name, on the full info page (with ratings, DOB, salary, etc), you would see that he is dtd with 70% effectiveness. In Dudecars case (Musial), the player is listed in red and is not available at all.

I will put Brown into the rotation, and move Koufax to the spot starter location. I also moved all of the other four starters up one slot, so Brown becomes the fifth man and will get skipped in favor of Bunning if Bunning has had enough rest. I moved all of your middle relievers up one (Brown was your #1 man there). If you want Koufax put on the DL and someone brought up as spot starter/middle relief, let me know.

BTW, you need to stay on the road. Your team is 10-0 on the road, 6-6 at home.

Mac and JW: Those moves have been made for you in OOTP. Too bad, JW, Latman was one of your better performing pitchers so far.
Mac, that leaves you with no spot starter. I don't perceive that will be a problem for the two weeks Koufax is on the DL. I don't believe the game has used anyone's spot starter yet, and isn't likely to since we are using the 5 man rotation with no doubleheaders. So at this point I am simply leaving that position empty. If for some inexplicable reason the computer goes with a spot starter for your team, it will simply pick one from among your middle relievers.

BTW, to all managers, I am presently in the process of editing in the salaries the players have in the league. My team is done, and you will see my salary is now $76,000,000. Hope to have this done for all teams within a week.

NEWS

ElHalo's Diablos had a tough couple of days in early May:

Saturday 5/1/1961: Jim Bunning shuts out El Halo's Diablos on 2 hits
EL HALO'S DIABLOS - Mac's Hard Cider's Jim Bunning overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. El Halo's Diablos had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Bunning (5-1) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 106 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Yogi Berra provided Mac's Hard Cider with the offense Bunning needed as he finished 3 for 5, homering once, scoring two runs. The final score of the game was 9-0.

Sunday 5/2/1961: El Halo's Diablos' Davis severely injured
EL HALO'S DIABLOS - El Halo's Diablos' centerfielder Willie Davis suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Mac's Hard Cider's Warren Spahn. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Davis will probaby miss 6 weeks. Broken Hand was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. He has hit 3 homeruns while batting .304 this season. His 21 hits and 8 walks add up to a .392 on-base percentage.

Willie Mays hit a 500 foot homerun vs the Phillies on 4/29.

Player of the Week: Jim Gentile (LMK)!
He batted .444 in 27 AB, with 4 HR and 7 RBI.

Leecemark's Knights now have the league's best record at 19-9, with the Hard Cider and Quakers both at 18-10. The Knights and Quakers have both gone 7-3 over their last 10 games to overtake the Cider, who have only been 4-6 in that span.

The Skipjacks are in a tailspin, going 1-9 in their last ten - and the nine losses were consecutive, a streak that is still ongoing.

Steve Barber pitched 8.1 innings of 2 hit ball, Barney Schultz finishing up, in a 2-1 win over the Phils on 4-28.

As indicated in the news item above, Jim Bunning hurled a 2 hit gem, shutting out the Diablos 9-0 on 5-1. His game score was 88, the highest yet for any pitcher: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB

Hope everyone continues to check the website.

Hey Lew, can't help but ask. Why does everyone seem to be doing better on the road? Is that even right? I think taking the league as a whole the record at home and road should be the same, but just eyeballing the records it doesn't appear to look like that at all.

--I have been going at a pretty fast pace. I'll always give at least 24 hours between series if there are injuries that owners are going to need to deal with. So far the number of injuries have been fairly light and the ones that have required action have gotten responses from their owners very quickly (thanks everyone for staying on top of that).
--I'm probably going to stay at a fairly fast pace, unless that is a problem for anyone. If I have the time and there are no serious injuries and/or they are responded to quickly then 2 series a day will probably be the norm. I don't know about everybody else, but the switch to being a keeper league has me thinking more about the next season than the next series.
--Sitting inside on a rainy day I've played another series this evening. There were a couple serious injuries in this one. My Knights lost Bob Bolin for 18 games. He went on the DL and Bob Bruce was called up. A struggling Billy Pierce was sent down and Jack Spring was called up as well. Bruce is slotted as the spot starter and mopup man. Spring is the back LH setup/closer. The other injuries were both to the Gamblers (who have been the hard luck team for injuries so far). Bill Virdon 16/16 and Al Smith 8/6 are out. Game results and standing will be updated shortly.

I think taking the league as a whole the record at home and road should be the same,

There is no reason why the sum of the home and road records must be the same. But it is odd that everyone is doing better on the road.

Why does everyone seem to be doing better on the road?

I can tell you why. There is an option for home field advantage. I turned it off. I too noticed after the last weeks' results the dramatic difference between home and road records. I have turned the home field advantage option back on. We'll see what happens.

Mark - I made those moves for you. Romano should be back in three days. I am actually simming a day at a time, but covering seven days, so he'll be back in the lineup soon.

I'm trying to track the injuries (majors; minors I just let the sub play three or four days), but may forget when someone is able to return. If I miss one of your players, please let me know they can return.

Great stats, Mark! Some observations on my team:

Bowsfield is the kind of guy who, if we were playing the "development" type of keeper league in OOTP, could become an ace - or not. It'd be interesting to see, and if the decision is to continue with DM, I may continue with OOTP but turn on all options, financial and player development.

Playing at Forbes, I note that none of my pitchers are among the leaders at allowing HR, but THREE of them are among the leaders at allowing triples! That would be expected, and seems to be working that way. I am surprised I have no pitchers up among the doubles leaders - guess those become triples in the huge gaps at Forbes!

Marichal and Bowsfield are carrying this team. It could be pretty ugly without them. Very happy with my pitchers. Batters are middle of the pack, but good enough to keep me in games with my pitching.

ElHalo - You didn't say what to do about Willie Davis' injury. I replaced him in the lineup with Cunningham, with Essegian as a backup. I put Davis on the DL, and brought up Hector Lopez as a reserve OF. If that is OK, fine. If not, let me know what to change.

Simmed another week in OOTP. Will be uploading the stats shortly.

Injuries:
Several minor injuries which made players day to day. The only major injury was to Bob Friend, out five to six weeks with a torn biceps muscle (ElHalo can't catch a break in OOTP; Willlie Davis just went down for 6 weeks).

Teams are getting LOTS of email from players not happy with their playing time - Frank Howard, Bill Skowron and several others. I simply read and delete these. There are also a lot of emails from minor league managers/coaches regarding moving players up or down. When I get one of these, I make the recommended move (JW, that's why Fregosi and Powell are back at A level).

For the first time all season, there was some movement in the Power Rankings.

NOTES: Ken Hunt (7 IP) and relievers threw a two hitter for the Skipjacks against Washington, winning 2-1 (5/8)
Ted Bowsfield threw a complete game and had three hits for the Legends in an 11-3 win over the Quakers (5/7)

I was going to sim another week tonight, but due to the major injury to Bob Friend wanted to give ElHalo some time to make a move if he wants to.

Stats should be uploaded and available in 20 minutes or so.

Simmed another week in OOTP. Stats will be uploaded about 20 minutes after this post goes up.

NEW MAJOR INJURIES:

Gary Bell, ElHalo"s Diablos - Strained bicep muscle. Day to day, full recovery 7 weeks. Since his effectiveness is still at 85%, and Friend is already on the DL, I left him in the rotation. EH, if you want me to do something else, let me know.

Regarding Bob Friend, I never heard from EH, so I put him on the DL. I brought up Earl Wilson from AAA and made him the spot starter, moveing 3 thru 5 starters up one each.

Stan Musial is back in the lineup for the Gamblers.

All other injuries were day to day, with recovery 5 days or less. In all of those situations, I leave the player on the roster and let the sub play.

NEWS:

Player of the week: Bob Allison, Skipjacks. He batted .478 in 23 AB, with 3 HR and 7 RBI.
The Quakers Pedros Ramos pitched a 3 hit shutout vs. Philadelphia on 5/10, winning 5-0.
Redbirds Ken McBride pitched a 3 hit shutout vs Kansas City on %/14, winning 10-0.
The Legends' Eli Grba (8IP) and Bob Allen (1 IP) combined on a 1-0, 2 hit shutout of PAP's REdbirds on 5/16. Hard luck loser Bob Purkey gave up the one run while scattering eight hits in a complete game loss.
Also on 5/16, Hard Cider's Jim Bunning fired a complete game 4 hit shutout against the Senators.

There was considerable movement in the power rankings this week - check it out on the website. Standings didn't change much. The Knights are opening up a lead in the Johnson Division; Hard Cider and Cannons fighting it out in the Cartwright Division. In the closest race, the Legends still maintain a 1 game lead over the Quakers, although neither team played that well over the last 10 games (both 5-5).

Many, many emails still from players not happy about playing time. A couple have asked to be traded if their time doesn't increase. Stupid me forgot to write down any of the names again!:noidea I'll try to remember next time.

I have edited all of our team salaries in OOTP so that each player's salary is now accurate, as well as the team salaries. I DID NOT do anything to the three doormat teams. In the process of entering/editing the salaries and comparing to postings, I found the following errors:

Mac's Hard Cider: His roster post shows a salary of 90.5M. I have triple checked and believe it should be 90M.

538280 Cannons: His roster post shows 81M. I believe it should be 83.75M. Also, he still needs to add Elio Chacon (.25), Bill Bruton (.5) and Bob Turley (.25) to his roster (I included their salaries in my figures).

In the above instances, I think there was simply an addition error.

PAPS Redbirds: Shows no salary on his roster listing. I figure it to be 85.25M.

ElHalo Raptors: Shows 81M on the roster listing. I figure it should be 81.75M. In this case, the difference is the last three players he drafted (Jerry Kindall, Bob Sprout, Fred Bruckbauer) were all added at 250K and none are on his roster. I think he just forgot to add them and their salaries.

All other teams' salaries are correct.

Almost half my games (21 of 48) have been against the doormats. I still haven't played the Diablos and have played only 3 games vs the Redbirds, who I expect to make a run at me in the division.
--Considering how many games I've played against weak teams my pitching hasn't been very impressive. I'm hoping for improvement from the guys I already have, but picking up a short term stud will be a consideration if I'm still in the middle of the pack in pitching when we get closer to the trade deadline.

INJURIES: Only major injury was to Bob Shaw of KC. He is out for five weeks. I brought up Bill Fischer from AAA to fill in. Day to day injuries to Bob Gibson (5 days) and Jim Landis (7 days).

Barry Latman was activated from the DL for the Skipjacks and placed back into the rotation. Turk Farrell was returned to AAA (thankfully for JW, as he was sporting a 0-3 record with 6.61 ERA during his stint with the big club).

NEWS:

Pete Runnels set an AL record with a five hit game for the Hard Cider on 5/21.

The Gamblers' Harmon Killebrew was the Player of the Week. He batted .455 in 22 AB, with 3 HR and 11 RBI.

And emails continue to pour in from players who want more playing time: Jim Brosnan wants to be the primary closer; Tom Sturdivant wants to be in the rotation; Bill Mazeroski wants to be traded if he doesn't start more.

Also a couple of emails regarding minor leaguers. I took the recommended actions in those cases.

I would like to propose a change to the Free Agent contract rule. I would like to change the FA rule so that a team can sign a FA for any amount of money, any length of time. I think it would be self limiting and not get abused, because the kicker would be the team couldn't release the FA until the contract was up - only trade him, or keep him and pay him. So, if I pay 12M for 7 years and the guy dies out after 4 years, I'm still on the hook for the 12M - and he still takes a roster spot - for the final three years unless I can find someone dumb enough to trade (not likely in this group). Conversely,if the other owners are inept enough to let me sign a superstar for 3M per year for 10 years, they have to live with it. It would be more realistic than the current rule, and like I said, I see little abuse potential. What do you think? Since it is going to be a bidding process, everyone will see what's going on - no secrets. Or perhaps setting a maximum on the number of years, but not "segregating" it into groups like it is now - any dollar amount for any number of years up to the maximum (if one is set). Comments or suggestions welcome and encouraged.

Even though my team has gone above .500 in DM, I feel I should make a few changes to my lineup. So, Mark and Lew, please make the following changes:

Lineup vs. RHP
1.Albie Pearson, RF (Kirkland 30%)
2.Wally Moon, LF (Kirkland)
3.Norm Cash, 1B (Wertz)
4.Hank Aaron, CF (Bruton)
5.Carl Sawatski, C (Pagliaroni 25%)
6.Woodie Held, SS (McMillan 15%)
7.Frank Bollng, 2B (Javier 5%)
8.Clete Boyer, 3B (Javier)
PH vs. RHP: Howard, Wertz, Kirkland
PH vs. LHP: Howard, Wertz, Kirkland

Lineup vs. LHP
1.Albie Pearson, RF (Kirkland)
2.Norm Cash, 1B (Wertz)
3.Hank Aaron, CF (Bruton)
4.Woodie Held, SS (McMillan)
5.Frank Howard, LF (Moon 30%)
6.Jim Pagliaroni, C (Sawatski)
7.Frank Bolling, 2B (Javier 5%)
8.Clete Boyer, 3B (Javier)
PH vs. RHP: Moon, Wertz, Kirkland
PH vs. LHP: Moon, Wertz, Kirkland

Also, when Kirkland is playing in place of Pearson against righties, could you please shift the lineup so Kirkland is batting 6th, and the lineup looks like this:

1.Wally Moon, LF
2.Woodie Held, SS
4.Hank Aaron, CF
5.Carl Sawatski, C
6.Willie Kirkland, RF
7.Frank Bollng, 2B
8.Clete Boyer, 3B

Sorry for the inconvience (if there is one), but Kirkland is a good player who should get a chance to play (especially with Pearson's lack of PAs), he just shouldn't get a chance to bat leadoff. His bad plate discipline doesn't do good there. But his slugging and throwing arm do lots of good.

Simmed another week in OOTP. Stats will be up on website shortly.

INJURIES: Only one serious injury. The Skipjacks' Jimmy Piersall sustained broken ribs. He is day to day and at 90% effectiveness. JW, if you want to make a move let me know. Otherwise, I'll let it ride.

NEWS:

The Diablos' Roberto Clemente was player of the week. He batted .500 in 26 AB, with 3 HR and 10 RBI.

The Senators overtook the hapless Skipjacks by going 7-3 in the last 10 games, while the Skipjacks could only muster a 2-8 record over that period.

The Gamblers Jim Kaat and Don McMahon combined on a 4 hit shutout of the Redbirds, 5/27.

The Quakers Bob Gibson fired a two hitter vs the Senators, and also hit a solo homer, 5/26. Lost his shutout in the seventh when Jim King tripled and scored on Dale Long's sac fly in the seventh. The homer was the longest of Gibson's career, travelling 430 feet.

Perhaps I am being too presumptuous in thinking that everyone has explored the website. I hope that everyone is aware that by clicking on a stats report on the standings page, you will get league wide reports. By clicking on your team name, you bring up the team page and all the reports listed there are for your team. Also, by clicking on a player name, it will bring up the player's page. This lists his name, attributes, contract, player ratings, performance in last ten games, overall and projected 1961 stats, a breakout vs left and right hand pitchers (as well as other situations), and his career batting stats. Same thing for pitchers, with pitching stats being listed (their batting stats are also shown at the bottom). I want to make sure everyone is aware that all of that info is available for each player.

OOTP Roster Moves: I juggled my pitching staff in OOTP. I made Paul Foytack my spot starter, moved Harvey Haddix into the #2 slot. I removed Phil Regan from mopup relief and made Foytack my #1 man there. Made REgan my #1 Middle reliever, removed Haddix from MR, and put Foytack as #4 in the MR slot.

catcher24

Chris - I made the changes, but be advised that in OOTP, Albie Pearson has a .402 OBP, while Kirkland has a .276 OBP. Kirkland does have more power, slugging .490 to Pearson's .358.

Unfortunately, OOTP can't automatically be set up to make the type of adjustment you want when Kirkland is playing vs. righties. The only way you could do that would be by having the game, setting your own lineups, then sending them to me prior to the games. I suspect DM is pretty much the same situation there, but could be wrong. I have made the lineup changes, but Kirkland will be batting leadoff vs. righties. Also, in OOTP you have Bruton at the AA level, so he can't be the sub for Aaron. I used Kirkland, hope that is OK. He is also listed as a farmhand in your DM roster. Sorry.

Having total freedom with free agent contracts would really change the dynamic over what we have now. Instead of big name players getting 3-5 year deals for $8 million, they might get $10-20 million one-year deals. On the plus side, it would make for a lot more action, with more good free agents becoming available every year. On the minus side, it would probably be less realistic. I'm not sure which option is better.

leecemark

--I have mixed feelings about the proposed change to the free agent contracts. I would like to encourage that discussion to be carried out in the rules/organization thread rather than the season one though. --Chris, when subs are inserted the CM adjusts the lineup. I can only preset for the starters. If you want Kirkland to play 30% and bat in a specific place in the order you need to make him starter for awhile (maybe adjust the lineups when you have a series with a short RF). So yeah, Virdon is back into the lineup, Jensen was sent back down to the farm.

I just wanted to double check, do you have Flood's backup in CF playing 20% of the games vs LHP and RHP? I have that setup for Koppe, and his AB are way less than Floods, and Floods backups (Virdon and Jensen when Virdon as injured) total way less than Temple's.

--The DL is days, not games if that makes it easier to track. Also I will be making roster moves only before the start of a series so if a guy is not eligible for game 1, then you couldn't make the move until the next series. If you do ask to restore a player before he is eligible the program won't allow me to do it and I'll let you know how many days you have to wait.

In OOTP, if a player is on the DL you get an email saying when he can come off, but it doesn't really track it to the day (20 games injury, on 15 day DL, you'll get the email after 15 days even though the player can't really come back for 5 more days). Another week simmed in OOTP. Mac's Hard Cider has the league's best record, but he is a slim one game over Chris's Cannons, who have the second best record. ElHalo is third in the tough Cartwright Divsion, but still has 31 wins. That's one tough division! Mark is beginning to run away in the Johnson division, his lead up to 8 games over the Redbirds. In the Hulbert, the Legends maintain a 1.5 game lead over the Quakers.

INJURIES: No new injuries, but Elston Howard had the flu and was day to day for five days.

NEWS: A couple of grat pitching performances on the same day, June 5th.

Curt Simmons fired a one hitter for the Knights vs. KC, winning 7-0. The only hit was a bloop single to short left center by Dick Howser with two out in the third inning. Not a gem, as Simmons walked seven, but a great game nonetheless.

On the same day, Bob Gibson fired a two hitter for the Quakers in an 8-0 shutout of the Phillies. Gibson sparkled, striking out nine while walking three. His game score for this game set a new league record, at 89.

Also on 6/5, Harvey Haddix fired a four hitter for the Legends in a 6-0 shutout of the Gamblers, but he was overshadowed by the other two on this day.

On 6/6, Mickey Mantle of the Hard Cider set a new league record for walks in a game with four vs the REebirds.

The player of the week was Bob Gibson of the Quakers. He won 2 games, with one shutout, pitched 18 innings with an ERA of 1.50, fanning 14.

Player of the month for May was Jim Gentile of the Knights. He batted .367 in 90 AB, with 9 homers and 23 RBI.

The May Pitcher of the month was Jim Bunning of the Hard Cider. He had a record of 7-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.94 and 2 shutouts.

I will try to sim two weeks tomorrow, injuries permitting. Stats uploaded shortly.

Dude, all three of our games were decided in the 9th. Musial hit a 2 run walk off in the bottom of the 9th in the opener, I came up with 4 runs to overcome a 2 run deficit in game 2 and Mays hit a 2 run shot to break up a tie ball game.

Everyone - Sorry I haven't simmed any more weeks with OOTP. Had a major computer problem. Spent most of Friday fixing it. Hope to be up and running again soon.

BTW, I am presently trying to get the pictures for the players available on the website. To see what it looks like, click on my team or Mark's, then a player name (those are the two I have done so far). When the player's info/stats come up, his picture will also be in the upper left, where the question mark was before. Some are great, some are so-so, and some are pretty bad, but I like it better than the question marks!

leecemark
01-21-2006, 01:02 PM
--Lew, the pictures are great. Got some questions about some of the ratings though. Virtually all of my guys have minimal desire to be on a winner and NO leaderships skills. How is that arrived at and does it affect my teams chances of winning? One guy who does get credit for great leadership is rookie utility infielder Dick McAuliffe. That may be a fair assesment of how he will be viewed later in his career, but if he is my leader now ahead of Mays or Gilliam or Colavito that doesn't seem very accurate.
--Also, Jim Gentile is rated as better known and more popular than Willie Mays and rookie SS Leo Cardenas is better known than long time Dodger regular Junior Gilliam (or most of my guys for that matter). Are the rating mostly just random or what factors go into them. I guess it doesn't matter if it doesn't affect my team on the field, but it is curious.

They recieve back pitchers Billy Stafford and Bill Dailey and a 1064 #2 pick.
--Braithwaite was very happy to land Stafford, "Billy provides an immediate upgrade to our staff. Our hitting has carried us to a great start, but our pitching hasn't been all we'd hoped. Bill Dailey also has a great arm, but he will need some additional seasoning at Kalamazoo before he can help us. Mark - I don't know what system the game uses to rate either desire to win, or popularity. Could be strictly random. I'll post on the OOTP discussion forums and see if the designers answer - they usually do.

Mac/Mark - I will execute the trade in OOTP. Mac, I will change your lineup as indicated. Mark, will your changes be on the roster thread or will you post here? Mark - Regarding your questions concerning the player character attributes in OOTP, I posted to the forums and have received a reply. The easiest way is to simply paste everything. Hope this answers your questions; sounds like none of it has much effect on team performance, except perhaps to some degree the leadership ability.

Random.

2. Do these ratings have any effect on the team's performance, or they strictly for show?
Needs a winning team - affects your ability to resign a player and is dependant on your teams success at the time of your extension offer.

local/national popularity - affects your fan interest and thus attendance

Team leadership skills - a good leader can have a positive effect on performance of players around him.
3. Do the ratings adjust or change over time?
No. I don't think I've ever witnessed a change in character.

On 6/13, Joey Jay of the Cannons turned the tables on the Gamblers, shutting them out on two hits, 5-0. He struck out five, and needed only 93 pitches to complete his gem.

Mac - I pray a LOT!!;)

Really, when I went to fill in my staff after trading away a huge chunk of it, I tried to get three or four guys who had decent seasons and hoped they would pitch fairly well, at least keeping me in games. That has happened, but realistically, after this season, my staff is done. Foytack, Grba, Sheldon, Bowsfield,Fisher, Haddix, Coates - Only one of them ever had a decent season again. 1962 ERA+ for my guys: Foytack 93; Grba 85; Sheldon 68; Bowsfield 87; Fisher 74; Haddix 94; Coates 84. The only ones who ever even reach 100 (league average) again at any time in their careers are Fisher (102 in 1968) and Haddix (a nifty 155 for Baltimore in 64). The rest are basically done or one year wonders, so I guess I've just been lucky.

And I have to wonder where I would be if I had kept Pizarro, Mossi and Bunning!:D

--Several interesting races are developing. The Hulbert Division looks to be a dog fight, with the heavily favored Quakers and the surprising Legends trading off the top spot all season so far (currently tied). The Wild card race should be a hot one too. The Cannons hold it now by one game over the Redbirds and Quakers/Legends (whichever isn't the division winner). The Diablos are 2 back and the Gamblers just 3. Only the Skipjack are out of the playoff race and JW has his own race to avoid the cellar (happily that was his only objective for the season from the outset;) ). The Hard Cider are on a tear and 1 game back of the Knights for the league's best record.
--I think we need to discuss tie breaking procedures. That seems a pretty good possibilty and we ought to resolve it sooner rather than later. Discussion on the rules thread please.

Mark - Thanks for the stats. I need to make some changes. Here they are:

BTW, do you think it would be OK for me to edit out the draft trades I made for the 1961 draft, since it is done? I would of course leave anything that refers to a future draft.

Another week finished in OOTP. Stats will be up online in a bit, along with the Hard Cider player photos.

INJURIES: Chuck Schilling, Jim Piersall and Dick Bertell all sustained minor injuries and are day to day. No major injuries.
Interesting note: The Quakers minor leaguers are taking a beating. Jim Duffalo is out four weeks, Ike Delock is out two weeks, and Phil Ortega's career is over due to a torn triceps muscle.

NEWS:
6/23: Pedro Ramos fires a two hitter for the Quakers in a 4-0 whitewashing of the Hard Cider. Game score of 87 is third highest this year for a pitcher.
Player of the Week: Juan Pizarro of the Redbirds. He won 2 games, with one shutout, pitched 16 innings with an ERA of 0.00, fanning 15. Juan gave the Redbirds quite a fantastic week!

If you get an opportunity, and are interested at all, check the league financials. Fan interest is rising in some cities, dropping in others. My Legends have gone from next to last to second best in fan interest. Mark has the highest, at 78. Legends and Hard Cider are both at 74.

I'll try to get another week simmed tomorrow.

Mark, I'll send Aquirre down and bring Camilli back up. He'll play behind Naragon at catcher until Lollar's unjury heals.

--Lew (and everybody else), if you have draft pick trades still up on your roster from the '61 draft then sure its okay to delete them.

I just hope it stays in the minors. Did you get an Email on Duffalo? I'm just curious how he fractured his jaw. Thanks for adding the player pictures, they look good.

What are the chances of keeping BOTH these leagues going? The DMB league as a continuing keeper league, and the OOTP with continuation as well, letting the players develop as they would on their own in that system. I'd really like to do something like that....what are everyone's thoughts?
