Bill O'Neal's American Association book says he was a popular second baseman in San Francisco. No idea if this was before or after 1889.

i know cantillon was playing in california in 1892-3 as a 2B for oakland

1889 - peoria in interstate association
1890 - st. paul in western association
1891- ??

"Pongo Joe," as he was universally known, was playing professionally by the age of 17 and for the next 15 years bounced around various minor leagues and the "outlaw" California League as a good-field, no-hit second baseman and occasional manager.Cantillon built a reputation for the development of young talent, reportedly an influence early in the careers of both Amos Rusie and Rube Waddell, probably the games fastest pitchers to that point.

And of course it was Cantillon that sent out Cliff Blankenship to Idaho to secure the services of a young phenom named Walter Johnson.

cantillon was a second baseman with really just scattered manager experience by the time rusie came up - i wonder what influence on his career thomas was referrring to??

i really can't see how cantillion met up with waddell - maybe in the western league in 1899 but by then cantillon was an umpire??

Waddell, by 1910, was back in the minors. He won 20 games for Joe Cantillon's Minneapolis (American Association) club in 1911.
