Five teams have anounced games vs Major Leagues teams to prepare for the WBC.
Venezuela vs Philadelphia Phillies
Panama vs Washington Nationals
Mexico vs Arizona Diamondbacks
Dominican Republic vs Houston Astros
Puerto Rico vs New York Mets
Cuba can not play anyone to prepare for the BWC.
Is this fair?
If Cuba is allowed, they should be able to play against MLB teams like other teams are planning too.

Yes they can IMO. They did play at home against the Orioles remember? Why not next spring?

Who said they can't play against MLB teams?
They can not even send a team for the BWC as of now.
The whole point is that either you do allow Cuba to compete or you don't. If Cuba can send a team, they should have the same opportunities as other teams to prepare for the games.

Cubano100% -- We've been thru this about 10 times already. Cuba has NOT been banned from the tournament. Cuba has simply been banned from PROFITING from the tournament. The Treasury Dept. does not issue visas. If Cuba wants to apply to the State Dept. for athletic visas, like every other country is doing, they can come like everyone else.

The USA has denied visas to Cuban musicians trying to attend the Latin Grammys. They do not profit from showing up to the ceremony.
I know what is going on with the baseball team. First, it is the Treasury Department. Then, they have to apply for the visas.
Two steps process in the USA involving two USA departments. A third step would be wether or not Castro allows them to come.

Actually Cuba has been banned from the tourney for the time being as the US Treasury had denied their request for visas.

Here is a nice article about Jim Lefebvre and his job as China's manager.
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060106&content_id=1292410&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlbThanks for posting this. Please note what he has to say about the future of baseball in China. These guys are not thinking about who their agent should be or what happens at salary arbitration. They are very serious, really committed, with a high tolerance for physical and mental discipline, a hunger to learn and an intense desire to show the world what they can do. There's a rich source of baseball talent here, and more than enough savvy, rich entrepreneurs to make it work as a business. The only thing that can hold it back is corruption and battles for power as the money starts to come in, as it already is in some other sports. Facilities need development, skilled groundskeepers are needed, there needs to be a widspread creation of Little Leagues, etc., but the production of equipment is well advanced and being sold worldwide, and the government is behind it. Lefebvre already has China experience, the Brett brothers are invested here in manufacturing bats, etc. When will a mainland player make it to pro ball? As soon as some prodigy masters three pitches, a couple of different speeds and good location. Or hits singles at a 300+ clip and occasionally finds the fences. That could be a few years off, or tomorrow. Taiwan's already done it and that's from a population base of 22 million people vs. 1.3 billion. The sad thing is, there should have been an explosion of baseball in China long ago. But I guess it's a bit of impediment to developing the sport when your nation's first president sets up a baseball training school for pitchers, but it's used for teaching recruits how to throw grenades. Let's hope this time 'round they can focus on the game.

Hi guys, is there someone who will attend the first round in Mexico City of the WBC? We have received an email that we were selected from the random draw to buy presale tickets for the 1st round.... We'll be in Mexico...(Cuba Fan & I)...

I am planning on attending in Mexico City. I got my acceptance to buy tickets as well, and will do so on Tuesday. I'm looking forward to it, but, I'll be rooting against Cuba, that's for sure :). Not that they have anything to worry about though. Looks like I'll see them win down there, and then see them again when I get home to San Diego the next week.

I'm wondering where my notice is too for tickets. Anxiously awaiting to purchase them.
Also Dutch, you can find my distaste for Cuba detailed in the Olympics thread. Don't like their arrogance!
Down there I'll be rooting for Mexico, and once we get home to San Diego I'll be rooting for Japan and Korea. I've seen a lot of the players before and like the Asian game.

I assume everyone got their email by now. I just checked my email and bought my tickets for the first round in Toronto.
I was surprised how cheap the tickets were I paid $22 per game, which is cheaper than Jays tickets in the same section. I realize this is basically early spring training games with a nationalistic twist, but still I was surprised how cheap they priced them. I was expecting close to the prices for the World Junior Hockey Championships that Saskatoon is hosting which work out to $60 per game.
One small thing, has anyone ever seen a game at Rogers Centre in section 135? I didn't realize it was along the foul line in the outfield when I purchased the tickets. I mean the outfield is fine for watching games out in centre field, but what is it like along the foul lines?

My tickets are not for sale yet. I can't buy for Mexico City yet. I'm very upset. I was ready to purchase. I can get directly behind home or directly behind the dugout for about $37 a game USD, so I could live with that. I know the Petco tickets are going to more expensive and the seats won't be as good, but if they ever put the Mexico City ones on sale I'll be ready to go.

I wonder what is going on with that?
I contemplated getting seats along the baselines, but I've been to Rogers Centre a few times and since its built for football the seats aren't exactly set the right direction for the plate. Plus, to sit turned most of the game isn't that comfortable for someone who is 6'4. If I had the money I would have gotten the In The Action section, but it was almost $1000 for a strip and isn't worth it. I just hope Canada plays three games in that pool, that's the whole reason I'm going. Seeing a veritable All-Star team in the Americans is decent too.

Got the date and place by any chance?
It was during the '06 Spring Training. I don't recall the date, but it was at Disney World's Wide World of Sports Complex, the Spring Training home to the Braves.
I'd assume in the warmup to this tournament, the countries will again play exhibition games against MLB teams. However, I wonder if perhaps this will mean a few early, early spring games for the Jays at home? Granted its not a grueling flight for teams to head from Florida to Toronto, but perhaps in an effort to promote the tournament they will have a couple games against the Jays.

That was harrowing. I don't speak Spanish. I can't read Spanish, and the map of the stadium was crap. I hope I got good seats. I went with Platnium like I wanted, but the map they put up for the stadium in Mexico City was worthless so I hope I got something good.
And, because I'm in the states I had to do will call. That always scares me.
But I have them....let's bring it on. I also have my tickets for Round 2 already!!!
