Cant tell him from his back
Bob Meusel??
Let's start a new game: Who's behind? :D
Because it is a lefty, I think it is Lou Gehrig.
Here's a couple hints. He played for the Yankees from 1965-1973. During that time, he led the Yankees in runs scored twice, in hits twice, in batting average once, in triples twice and in stolen bases four times. Dang! Too slow. Somebody already got it.

I can only find two players that played for the Yankees from 1965. Both played until 1974...

The wires have gotten a little crossed, yankees rule -- zman put up those facts about Horace and then realized somebody had already identified the photo of him with Mickey several posts above.

Gotta be Steve Kline. He was pretty good until he hurt his arm then just faded away. Seems like a lot of Yankees of that era would raise our hopes and for one reason or another, never become what we hoped they might. Ron Bloomberg comes to mind. I was sure he'd be hitting homers into the upper deck for years to come.

Sam McDowell
He might have been another Nolan Ryan if not for the booze.
Yep and yep. Fortunately he got help and like Don Newcombe has worked to help others struggling with addiction both in and outside the game.
"McDowell was overwhelming from 1965 to 1970, winning five strikeout titles and twice fanning over 300 batters by the age of 28 (only Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Walter Johnson, and J.R. Richard have struck out 300 batters as many times).
McDowell struck out 2,453 batters in his career. His total of 74 games with 10 or more strikeouts is fourth behind Ryan, Koufax, and Steve Carlton, and his career average of 8.86 strikeouts per nine innings trails only Ryan and Koufax."

There are two key clues here: the photo looks old (we've been told it's old too) and also the bit about best at his position, which we now know is infield.

Looks like a clue is needed here. This man was born in the city that serves as the Yankees' shadow management center, went to college there, and is now that college's pitching coach.

Last clue: in his major-league debut, our man allowed just one hit in seven innings as the Yankees defeated Boston 6-0.

OK, one final clue: the year was 1992, and our man's MLB career ended the next year with a lifetime record of 4-4.

Sam Militello
In seven innings pitched he allowed only one hit (Tony Pena) and struck out five.

Pedro Ramos -- ¡tienes razón!
I can't believe he had much speed left by the time he came to the Yankees. His 1964 Indians card makes him look pretty rotund. I also wonder how his health is -- so many pictures show him with a chaw, I hope he quit.
The next Yankee is a "famous first":
Yeah that's Bloomberg. I had my picture taken with him at the stadium once.
I know I 'm late in posting this. But I'm new to the thread and wanted to tell you that.

correct that the picture was Red Rolfe.....yes, but he was not the best Yankee at his position. This was.

I never saw Rolfe. But I did see Greg Nettles. He probably would have won a bunch of Gold Gloves if not for some guy in Baltimore. Probably should have anyway.
