Of all the pitchers who started their careers in the modern era (1900 or later) only Doc White, Ray Caldwell, Christy Mathewson, and Chief Bender, did this. What is "this".

No, No, and No.OK, those were Caldwell's feats. On to White. How about four hits in one game including an in-the-park HR, allowing three guys in one inning to score on dropped third strikes, or having five shutouts in a ridiculously short time (as low as eighteen days)

or a few Christy Mathewson feats: Did they all beat the World Champion checkers player (at checkers, of course, not baseball)? or were they the only 4 guys in MLB history to be nicknamed after a fire engine?

No, No and No.
It is a career achievement.

Scoring refers to the number 20 and does not refer to wins.

I'm still laboring on this. Is it okay to test our hypotheses by asking for hints -- i.e., confirmation of approaches? Here, I'm thinking it relates to shutouts -- is that on the right track?

No. While all the players mentioned are pitchers it has nothing to do with pitching.

My guess is they were pitchers who stole at least 20 bases for one team during their ML careers - Bender had 20 career stolen bases for the Philadelphia A's, Caldwell 23 SB for the Yankees, Mathewson 20 for the Giants and White 26 for the White Sox.

They are the only players whose primary position was as a pitcher, who started their careers in the modern era, to steal 20+ bases. The number of teams is immaterial to the answer.

What about Jack Coombs?

Yes, by the way I worded this I should have included Jack Coombs and Johnny Lush. More careful wording would have limited the answer to just seasons in which the player was primarily a pitcher. My bad.
