View Full Version : Best Pull

This week I had probably the best pull in my 20 year of collecting. I will know when the next beckett comes out anyway. In a $9.99 box of cards that they sell at Wal-Mart, this box had 5 $2.99 packs of cards. I actually pulled atleast 6 good cards, but the best one was a 2005 Throwback Threads Game Used Bat Babe Ruth #ed 1/25. The photo on the card was in the Yankees uniform also which made me love it that much more being a yankee fan.

I would say my three best pulls were

1. Ichiro Suziki 2002 Topps 206 Insert Bazooka Back.
2. Tris Speaker 2002 Topps 206 Relic Game Used Bat
3. 2001 SP Game Bat Edition Piece of the Game Autograph

Only kept one of the three.

In how many packs? Was that from the same box? That was from two packs. I bought three packs but wasn't gonna mention the third pack since it "only" had a Joe Nathan GU jersey. Then I looked through the third pack more carefully today. It also has a Wade Boggs game-used bat HF-WB. You may officially hate me

All I can say is wow. How many inserts come in a box, and how much should a pack cost? Talk about a nice ROI.

Egads. Looks like a stop at the card shop will happen on the way home. Unless it's like the state lottery, where only those in Northeast Ohio or Columbus ever have a chance to get anything.
Either way, very, very nice.

Either way, very, very nice.Let's put it this way, the pack wrapper says there are two "groups" of Hall of Fame Relic cards. The MORE plentiful group has the odds of pulling one at 1 in 1,612 (the other is 1 in 5,587)

Well, I've been collecting for a long, long time, but I do not know the "tricks of the trade" in terms of getting good pulls. Yeah, until I learn what to look for, buying packs will only be buying packs.

1. Stan Musial Upper Deck Sweet spot patch card

3. Amare Stodilmire rookie Jersey ( i no its basketball and you won't appreciate it but it was a hell of a pull )
4. Topps Bazooka Andre Dawson Bat card

3. Nolan Ryan Patch/100 from 2002 Fleer Greats ($2.99 retail pack)

I know it's not a pull, but I just bought a Steve Carlton Hat/Bat/Glove/Jersey TAG/ Auto 1/1 from 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia and I didn't break the bank on it.

Either way, very, very nice.I could have hit two stores in SW Ohio this weekend (which I probably will in March, hope the packs are still there). I opted to hit stores here & go to shows. At the show got a Sutton jersey card #ed/100 for $4 and some Bonds cards. At the store, another $1.99 Topps pack, another jersey (Beltran ASR-CB) with some RCs. I'll hit one last store Monday, and I've pretty much finished up a lot of NE Ohio

Best pull I've ever had, especially for all ya' Red Sox fans out there, I bought a 2005 Leaf Century pack of 5 cards and I pulled a Dwight Evans game used auto card numbered out of 34. It was around $90.00 in Beckett. But that was eclipsed when a little boy brought in a Prime Cuts Babe Ruth Custom Numbers Jersey Bat Pants Jersey card out of 25 worth around $800.00 in a screw down case. I got to hold the card. That was awesome.

Best card I ever pulled was a 1990 or 91 Upper Deck Signed by Hank Aaron, box was $15.00, I'm not sure what the card is worth now, but I have it in glass and wouldn't sell it anways.

Haven't collected Baseball cards since the market was flooded in the early 90's, but I'm sure I have thousands of dollars worth all kept mint.

I've only found a couple stores in SW Ohio that I like, with one being long gone, but I've pretty much only stuck to the Dayton area. Don't worry, I don't have any interest in newer stuff, outside of complete sets, so I'm not going to swoop in behind your back. :D

At the time, Kittle was bigger than Boggs or Gwynn. Sizewise, at least.
Gwynn I had not heard of until the next season, really, but Boggs went on a tear the previous year and I searched out for his cards at the time. I was pretty much only buying Topps packs at the time, Cello or otherwise. I vividly remember buying a 1985 Topps Cello pack because it had Brook Jacoby on the bottom. (I needed him to finish my set.)

Can you tell which packs have inserts or game-used cards? It seems like you're getting an awful lot of them.It varies from set to set. What you GOTTA start with is packs with somewhat see-through plastic wrappers, never foil. IF the 05 Leaf Rookies & Stars baseball are still around, you can actually see the part that says All Star Stitches if you slide the cards around. If not, look for packs that have a dark card in them that don't appear in most other packs, usually in the middle of the pack. Get one pack, open it up and see if it's what you're looking for or not. Do NOT be duped by the thick pieces of cardboard that LOOK like game-used cards, 99% of the time they aren't.

Ah I see. I'll give it a try.Let me know how it goes. Remember, start with one pack. Open it up outside the store and if you get results you like, you can go back to the store for similar packs

Ah I see. I'll give it a try. Also, if it wasn't obvious, go to retail places like Target or if Toys R US still carries cards. Dealers will either
1) escort you to the door if you start sliding cards in packs or'
2) let you do it all day because they've already pulled the good packs :grouchy

Yeah I just tried at Target, unfortunately there wasn't a whole lot of different packs. The only ones I could really see through were 2005 Topps Updates and Highlights but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I think next time I'll try and find a store with a larger selection, this Target only had about 3-4 different brands.

Did they have the 06 Topps rackpacks?

My best pull was out of a box of 05 Diamond Kings, I pulled a Johnny Bench Recollection Collection Auto 1/1. In second is my Topps Pristine Legends Celebrity Threads Refractor Uncirculated Marilyn Monroe Dress card #'d /25. Besides the 1/1 auto of her that was inserted this is the best card you could pull.(above any actual baseball players in fact)

What's a rack pack and how are they different from the regular packs? It has a cellophane wrapping, and instead of one "stack" of cards, it's three smaller "stacks". The whole thing is least a foot long

Ahhhh I see. I did see those before just didn't know what they were called. And now I see why it'd be much easier to see any good cards in rack packs. Cool, thanks.

Just hit Target today for a birthday present for my brother. Along the way I bought two of their "$1.49" packs and a 2006 Topps Series 1 pack. The $1.49 packs were a 2003 Topps Traded and Rookies and a 2003 Donruss. The two Topps packs produced nothing special except a Topps 2K Sports All Stars Vladimir Guerrero insert.

I opened the 2003 Donruss pack and was pleasantly surprised by the top card: Greg Maddux Diamond Kings. Not too shabby. In the next few cards I pulled Mike Gonzalez and K-Rod "Rated Rookie" cards (thought I'm not sure if those are actual rookie cards). Also got regular ol' Roger Clemens, Torii Hunter, and Tom Glavine cards.

But in the middle of the stack was a thick piece of carboard. I went to it, and saw a Chipper Jones Timber and Threads Game-Used Jersey card! It was #'d 86/150. Thought that was pretty cool. I think that's the first time that I have pulled a jersey card from a pack that didn't guarantee one. Not bad.

I bought 2 unopened packs from 1978 off of e-Bay and actually got the exact card I was hoping for, Ozzie Smith's rookie. I think I paid only about 9 or ten dollars apiece for them. The card was terribly centered, but I'm not in it for the money, just the fun of collecting. I soon got greedy and bought more late 70's packs and priceguide wise did not get my moneys' worth, but it's worth it to me just see an previously untouched 2nd year Molitor or a 3rd year Brett.
