Anyone know if Benny Santiago is still with the Mets organization? Last I heard he was somewhere in their minor league system...

thanks

I believe they signed him to a minor league contract in June and he's still officially with the club, but we'll have to see if he gets invited to spring training.

Let's trade Wright and let Santiago play 3B!

He'd even be a good guy to have in the AAA to help the pitching staff get ready for the majors. Much like Pat Borders was doing for the Mariners.

But Benny had his eyes set on Fisk's all time games caught record and he's not getting any younger.

He's getting too old to do it. He is still about 300 games away, which will take more than 2 full seasons. Even if he somehow finds a gig this year to be the starting catcher of a mlb team (which I can only see happening as a top-gap to an injury), I can't see him playing enough in the future to catch Fisk.

Agreed.

I think that's why he signed with the Royals a few years ago - guaranteed playing time. But then he got injured and hasn't been able to play consistently since. He only caught 6 games in 2005!

No GM would be that crappy or stupid to pull a move like that!
It would be funny to see him try!

He only played 12 games for the Mets in the minors...

In July he opted out of his contract with Triple-A Norfolk... So as far as I know he is no longer with the organization...

He is a Free Agent, no longer with the Mets

Thanks for the info...

I just read a news bit that said Benny was planning a comeback and his first choice would be to sign with the Padres again. Best of luck to him...

What do you think of saying this now, even though it was 2005.

Three years later I still am kicking myself in the butt for thinking that too (well along those lines). I would think to myself: "Who's this punk David Wright? We need a vet at 3B!"
Now... I'm glad that I'm not the GM and just a fan. :homeplate:

It was a joke then, and it's still a joke now...

Thank you. Even the thought of Benito Santiago playing 3B makes me laugh...
