ESPN.com Peter Gammons has reported the Red Sox traded prospects Hanley Ramierez and Anibal Sanchez to the Marlins for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, thank god Becketts out of the NL East.

If it does go through (still money issues and players must pass physicals), this doesn't seem all that bad for the Marlins. They lose an underproducing, overpaid third-baseman and a DL-proned starting pitcher and get a future all-star SS and a better than decent starter.

This is Marlins clearance sale is good. Nationals are almost guaranteed to not be in last in the division this season.

You really think they're gonna dump Cabrera, Willis, Castillo, Pierre, etc?

:laugh :laugh Exactly KingJ. The Marlins will never again win!!
I went to a Marlins-Nats game, this July. The Marlins won 4-3.
Your owner is trying to attract the fans, he's desperate, he gives away at least 6 things in the game and gives 20% off certain coupons.
THE FISH WILL BE FRIED!
THIS IS WHAT YOU DESERVE JEFFREY LORIA!

I did not insult any members. I am agreeing to what a member said. I didn't insult anyone but Loria and Selig, nor did I use vulgar language.

Members or otherwise means everybody. And there are those who would say the word you referred to Loria as is vulgar. It is certainly beneath what we're trying to do here.

Are you serious, you think that desperate and the FISH ARE FRIED is an insult?
It's just my opinion
I didn't mean it in offense to anyone.
At least you guys have a team.

Not that, what you referred to Loria as. I removed that.
Nobody likes Loria. Believe me. That's all you have to say.

This is one of those deals that could blow up in either teams face. For the Fish this move coupled with the Burnett thing frees up tons of cash to do good things. They also pick up one hot prospect and another decent one. If either of theprospects pans out and the team uses its money wisely this could be the start of something very good. Of course, if they prospects turn out to be suspects and the cash is stashed it will get ugly.

I don't think trading Beckett and Lowell is a fire sale. Lowell was making a ton of money and wasn't producing. Marlins had no choice and had to move Beckett after what happened last season. They picked up a stud shortstop prospect and a good pitching prospect. They could have done worse.

Heh. Right after I posted that it was just reported that the Marlins traded Carlos Delgado. Maybe it is a fire sale. Either way the Marlins picked up two more prospects and are trying to put themselves in good position for the future.

The Marlins are operating under a somewhat unique set of circumstances. Despite playing in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, having a special "bond" with the local Latino community and having won two World Championships in the past 9 seasons, the team is severely restricted from making the kinds of profits their situation would dictate in a free market because of the restrictive stadium lease. If this turns into a fire sale indeed, it will be the second such downturn attributable to H. Wayne [expletive deleted] Huizenga.
Far worse than freeing up payroll and building for the future is the possibility that the team could be relocated, as early as 2008, according to a report I read at ESPN.com today.
I am concerned. Is Loria's intention to build for a brighter future in Miami, cutting costs in the meantime? Or is it to free up capital for a move to Portland or Las Vegas? Only time will tell.

The trades being made by the Marlins at this point seem excessively extreme. This is the part of MLB which I can do wthout.

Luis Castillo has been traded and this can officially be called a fire sale.

I hope the Florida investors join the Montreal ones and sue him once the Marlins are moved. I have no doubt that this is the end of major league baseball in Miami. Loria has now successfully destroyed two major league franchises so he can get a shiny new stadium and make more money.

Agreed. I can't believe MLB tolerates this guy and his tactics. He is the epitome of everything that's wrong in the game, and perhaps our society as well. I feel badly for the fans in Montreal and South Florida, and any other city that inherits a team owned by Jeffrey Loria.

Why don't we just start a new game.
With LoDuca gone lets try and guess who will be the next one to go.
Will it be Miguel Cabrera????Dontrelle Willis?????Juan Pierre??????
Seriously though, its become obvious that the Marlins are ODing on the salary dumping. Ive heard of thinning the budget but this is simply ridiculous

Miguel won't be moved he's got about 2-3 more years before his 6 are up...and then Willis has another 2 I believe before his six...therefore there is no reason for the Marlins to move them.
Plus, if Loria is going to move the franchise then he will need at least a star or two to market and get the stadium he's selling his soul for.
I still don't understand why MLB doesn't step in and stop him!

Since the Yanks were told it would take both Chien-Ming Wang and Robinson Cano to get Juan Pierre, what would it take to get D-Train?

D-Train won't be traded as he is still getting paid the league minimum (not really fire sale eligible).

Dontrelle Willis (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7133) only makes $378k. That's gruesomely low.
I remember a few years ago, Albert Pujols was making very little. I personally don't think that Juan Pierre may be worth the two ex-rookies the Yanks used so often in 2005, but D-Train surely would be. :D

So what exactly will the starting team be on Opening Day?
From Matt's infamous Yesterday's News:
Loria addresses the future of the Marlins
Owner says lack of stadium deal is direct cause of trades (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051205&content_id=1276636&vkey=news_fla&fext=.jsp&c_id=fla)
DALLAS -- Build it and the payroll will again increase. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria echoed that sentiment on Monday at the Winter Meetings.
Until the Marlins have the security of a new retractable-roof stadium in the Miami area, or elsewhere, the organization will no longer sustain significant financial losses. At an impasse with South Florida regarding a new building, the Marlins have received permission to seek relocation.
In the meantime, the club is seriously slashing payroll. On Monday, the Marlins officially traded catcher Paul Lo Duca, and the remaining $12.5 million on his contract, to the Mets for two Minor League pitching prospects.

I found it funny that they wanted Wang and Cano from the Yanks, but then took Mitre and some Mid-Level prospects in return for Pierre.

Did anyone watch the Marlins President stand up on that Podium and say, "This is NOT a fire-sale!"
What a disgrace...he had the nerve. He said that a fire sale is when they put out a booth and say come and get it...first come first serve and that's not what they did.
It's a damn shame. I would love to have South Miami keep it's baseball team, but Loria is basically holding them hostage. He wants a Retractable roof stadium or he's going to move!
