View Full Version : Creating new historical Sim League

I am creating a new league with well-liked and HoF players on the teams for OOTP and I was wondering what players I should put on the teams. I'm starting with the teams in the ML in 1901 but I wouldn't mind teams that came into existence later.
If I can get this done in the next month or so I'll try to make it downloadable if anyone's interested.

I wish somebody would post stuff but I'm gonna check the other team sites and get the opinions on the all-time teams. People can post players they liked if they want. I just want some help doing this. If no one's interested, just tell me and I'll ignore this thread from now on.

Okay... would you like to help with Brooklyn? As of right now, I have school and 15 other teams to work on.
My schedule is so hectic that it will be more than a month to get it all complete.

Hello, good luck with the project!
My first question would be, are you going to do one team per player? And if so, are you aiming to even the teams out talent-wise or would you put the players where they most make sense?
RamMan12
11-15-2005, 02:23 PM
I'm making just a 25 player all-time team. The players are going on the team that they played the most time for. If they couldn't get inducted into the hall of fame with a team, they're not gonna be on th all-time team. For instance, Dennis Eckersley could be on the A's all-time team but not the Indians' or Red Sox's all-time teams. The teams used are also the teams in existence in 1901. Hope that answers your question. By the way, it will be a week or two before I get restarted on the project. Anyone is welcome to help me if they want however.

I've been interested in leagues of all time franchise all stars since I was a kid an had the Sports Illustrated All-Time All-Star game (see http://www.innova.net/~randycox/SSBHistory.htm for discussion). I bought Stormfront Studios' Old Time Baseball in the 1990's and created a "universe" with updates of the old SI rosters. Sadly, Old Time Baseball requires video and audio drivers that are not included on computers past Windows 95/98. In recent years I have been playing Diamond Legends ( http://legends.stats.com ), but am looking for a new sim challenge. I am considering purchasing Diamond Mind with the All Time Greatest Players disk to update my old league once again and stumbled on this thread.
Attached for your consideration is a zip with text files of 40-50 man rosters for each of the 16 "original" franchises updated to the present.
I am curious as to how you plan to create your league in OOTB, since this is a much cheaper option than Diamond Mind. Diamond Mind's All Time Greatest Players has done the job of establishing peak performances over a multi-season period AND "normalized" the performances of players from different eras so that they are comparable. Old Time Baseball had "Time Machine" feature to adjust teams from different seasons to make them comparable. Does OOTB have such a feature?

I'm sorry i haven't posted for a while. College applications, school, and the holidays have been time-consuming. What I'm gonna do is wait for Out of the Park Baseball Manager 2006 to come and make it on that game. However, I am looking at southendgrounds roster list right now and I will incorporate those into my lists. I will post the final rosters in the next few weeks (hopefully!) for anybody that wants them on their own baseball sim game.

Welcome back! I have just downloaded the now FREE version of ootp5 and wondered if you had any tips for creating/editing players.

If you go to OOTP's forum, add-ons (try this link) (http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=64), there are many things you can download. Among them are the Ankin DB52 (v 5.2), and the Ankin CareeraverageDB52. I think these may be what you are looking for. I believe the players in these databases are "normalized" so that everything is evened out across different eras. There is an even newer DB, arodgarlanregDB65 which does pretty much the same, but has also included some of the top Negro League players. There are so many addons to OOTP (free) that you can do virtually anything with it. I don't doubt that DM is a great game, and I am in Leecemark's DM Keeper League, but the teams are expensive. They are free in OOTP.

I am downloading OOTP5 right now. I had Season Ticket Baseball 2003 or OOTP4. Thanks, southendgrounds!
For catcher24, I've seen the databases before but I wanted to make my own, based on who I wanted on the teams. Not what others wanted. Thanks for the help though.
I have vacation from Friday to the 3rd so I hope to get this whole project done by then. I'll post later this week hopefully.

How did you get OOTP5 for free? It still tried to make me pay for it.

I think you misunderstood me. If you download the database(s), you can take ANY player from ANY year into your league/onto your teams. You don't have to go with any predesignated teams. Hell, I'm in the fourth year of a "career league" that combines teams from the 1901 Senators to the 2003 Tigers! And I can't stress enough, you don't have to take the whole team. You can download any individual player from the DB.

I have downloaded this database. Using Custom League with no players, I have uploaded several individual players, and they end up as free agents. Then have to offer them contracts. Any way to short cut this?
catcher24
12-22-2005, 04:32 AM
Yes. If you go into League, select League Setup, choose the Basic Setup tab, and on the left hand side, disable financials. They will still be assigned a contract by the computer, but you won't have to negotiate with them, you can simply pick them. You would probably want to import all the players you want, then do a draft to attach them to their teams; that seems to be the quickest way. BTW, if you have any questions, go here (http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=11) and post it. I have found you will receive a reply very quickly in almost every case. You will have to register first.
Good luck. If you haven't used OOTP before, it can be a very steep learning curve. But the game has so much available, it is worth it. If I can be of help, let me know. I'm certainly not an expert, but I've been using it for over a year now and am beginning to figure some things out.

I have tried to do this but found it very time consuming. And I did understand what you meant. I started a league with all fictional players but about 20 years into it, I imported the Waner brothers so I could have them on my team when I had a depleted outfield. Also, Willie Mays, Eddie Plank, and Christy Mathewson have all been in the league too.
Thanks for the link and I will be done with this project around the 3rd as I said yesterday.

I spent Christmas eve and yesterday working on it in my free time and I have most of the rosters done and I'm putting the players in the game. I do have major holes in a few teams though and I will be asking for help in a few days. The players will be put in either as rookies or players in their prime, depending on whether or not they start (for the all-star team) and some other factors.

These are the rosters the way I have it now. I'm gonna ask for help in the team forums but this is what I have as of right now.

If you are at all interested, I have Rob Neyers' book "Big Book of Baseball Lineups", in which he chooses the greatest lineups for each team, with a #1 and #2 lineup (based on career records). He also chooses the greatest single season lineup (only one). I would be glad to give you some of the info from that if you are interested. As a point of comparison, here are his #1 and #2 all-time (career) Cubs lineups:
Position #1 Team #2 Team
C...................Gabby Hartnett...........Johnny Kling
1B..................Mark Grace................Frank Chance
2B..................Ryne Sandberg...........Billy Herman
SS.................Ernie Banks.................Joe Tinker
3B.................Ron Santo..................Stan Hack
LF.................Billy Williams................Hank Sauer
CF................Hack Wilson.................Andy Pafko
RF.................Sammy Sosa...............Kiki Cuyler
SP1...............Mordecai Brown............Hippo Vaughn
SP2...............Feguson Jenkins...........Charlie Root
SP3...............Pete Alexander.............Lon Warneke
SP4...............Greg Maddux................Ed Reulbach
RP.................Bruce Sutter................Lee Smith
I would use some of the second team starters and long relievers.
If I can be of help, let me know. I think you'll get a LOT of input from the team threads, though.
RamMan12
12-31-2005, 09:40 AM
That's pretty cool. In case I haven't said it before though, I don't want active players on the teams. They have to be retired as of right now to be in the league. What I'm thinking of doing is using ARod23's Random Debut database and delete the players that are already in the league so that real players will continue to be in it. I have the OOTP6 demo and I think I'll try to import the league into that version so I have two versions of the league so other things can be used in the league (like 40-man rosters). Last two things, I posted in the Braves and Senators forum to see if they could help me finish those teams and I can't remember if the Browns became the Orioles or not. I know the Orioles became the Highlanders then the Yankees though.
catcher24
12-31-2005, 10:32 AM
Yes, the Browns became the Orioles in 1953. Actually, they were the first of the teams that all moved elsewhere during the 50's to leave.

Happy New Year everybody. I wasn't able to finish the rosters by the time vacation ended although I have the majority done. I will be pretty busy this month with midterms and other stuff but if you want to help fill in the holes, be my guest. Just post who to put in. I also noticed that Grover "Pete" Alexander is on two teams on the list I posted. He will be on the Cubs, not the Phillies.
I hope to talk to you guys later and thanks for the help.

I'll offer a little input. Please don't take offense at anything, it is offered with good intentions. A lot of it comes from Neyer's book I mentioned to you, but some is straight from me.
Cubs: I would personally take Stan Hack and Billy Herman as reserve infielders over Tinker and Evers. Tinker is a pretty decent choice, too, but Evers (IMO) simply doesn't have enough to offer. I would put Sammy Sosa in your open reserve OF spot; the guy hit 60+ HR three straight years. I would also probably replace Shawon Dunston as a utility with either Stan Hack or Billy Herman, if you keep Tinker and/or Evers. Would probably take Hank Sauer over Rick Monday as reserve OF, too. For the staff, I would go with a 4 man rotation of the top four, and use Sutcliffe and Griffith as your middle relief.
Senators: For SS, you might consider Cecil Travis or Roger Peckinpaugh. For CF, Clyde Milan would be the most likely choice. You would have to get new reserves for those two, but they are the most logical starters. You could add Heinie Manush in the OF and Bucky Harris in the IF. Maybe Bob Porterfield as another starter, and Tex Clevenger as the closer.
Tigers: The obvious person missing is Bill Freehan at catcher. Or Lance Parrish if you prefer, but I would take Freehan. Another infielder could be Donie Bush or Travis Fryman. Reserve OF - bobby Veach, Chet Lemon, Willie Horton. Utility - Veach or Norm Cash. Closer has to be John Hiller or Mike Henneman, and the other should be a RP too. For antoerh starter (I would use them in mid relief) Tommy Bridges or Dizzy Trout.
Phillies: 2B - tony Taylor or Dave Cash. SS - Granny Hamner or Dave Bancroft. I would also try to get Johnny Callison on the team, as a starting or reserve OF. In pitching, I don't believe Tug McGraw was a starter. I would make him the closer, and add Curt Simmons, Curt Schilling and/or Chris Short as starters. Ron Reed would make a good relief pitcher, too.
Pirates: Good job. I would probably have a couple of different starters in the OF, but you've got about all of their greatest players. You must have Barry Bonds on SF, or he needs to be added. I would try to get Bob Friend and Roy Face onto the staff somewhere, too. Backup catcher of Tony Pena would be good.
Red Sox: I would put Yaz at 1B, and use Vaughan as a backup. Nomar Garciaparra would make a good IF.Other OF/UT - Jim Rice, Harry Hooper, Jimmy Collins, Pete Runnels. Backup catcher - Wally Shcang. Other pitchers to consider: Joe Wood (just fantastic until an arm injury), Mel Parnell, Ellis Kinder. BTW, where is Clemens? He spent more time with Boston than any other team.
Atlanta: Catcher - Javy Lopez or Del Crandall. 1B: I'd go with McGriff, you have him as a reserve. Reserve could be Joe Adcock or Chris Chambliss. Looks like you have Glenn Hubbard at SS; I think he was mostly a secondbaseman. I would take Jeff Blauser or Rabbit Maranville at SS. It gets a little jumbled here on the post, so I'm trying to figure out who goes where. I think you have to add Chipper Jones, either at 3B or in the OF.Other OF possibilities are David Justice, Rico Carty and Andruw Jones. I think the five pitchers you have are all supposed to be starters. I would add Tom Glavine, and you have to add Greg Maddux either to the Braves or Cubs. He's top 10 all time, IMO. Seems like John Smoltz should go in there, somewhere, too. For relievers, Gene Garber and Mark Wohlers would be good.
Got to go now. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the input. I thought I put it in this thread but I can't find it; I won't put any players on these rosters that are still active. Also, if Clemens decides to retire, I'll put him back on the Red Sox. But until then, he'll be off the roster.
Now, my responses to the input (except suggestions for active players of course).
Cubs: I'll put Hank Sauer in unless the people in the Cubs forum disagree. I have Rick Monday mainly because he was fairly decent and he was the first person ever drafted. I still need another pitcher, I don't care if he's a starter or reliever, as long as he pitches.
Senators: I didn't know what position he played but I'll put Travis at short now. I saw Manush on one or two other all-time teams so I'll have to think about where to put him. I'll think about the pitcher suggestions.
Tigers: I'll have some problems choosing between Freehan and Parrish. I'll also check the stats for Fryman, Lemon, Bridges, and Trout.
Phillies: I'll put Taylor and Bancroft in those positions. Callison, Simmons, and Reed will be thought about.
Pirates: Thanks, they're my favorite old-time team. Face was a closer, and I like my other pitching choices. For Bonds, he's still active and I HATE him with a passion for many reasons. He will never be on an all-time team of mine, no offense.
Red Sox: Yaz played mainly at LF, so I won't have him as a 1B. I can't believe I left out Rice. I might kill myself now. I'll check out Hooper and Collins.
Atlanta: My thing got screwed up. I'll check the stats and stuff for Crandall, Adcock, Justice, and Blauser (also can't believe I forgot him). BTW, has Smoltz retired yet? I would like to put him on the team.
Just as a note, my five favorite teams go like this: Cubs, Red Sox, Pirates, Tigers, and Padres. Just to explain some choices I made. (The Cubs will be #2 on my list again when they win the WS.)
Thanks again for the input. Now I have to go to the Sox forum and check what they said about my roster.

I'll have some problems choosing between Freehan and Parrish
I would go with Freehan, personally. But then, the 60's were the era I grew up. General info:
...............................Freehan.........Par rish
OPS+, Lifetime..............112..............105
Win Shares,Lifetime........267.............248
Top 3 seasons, WS......35,30,25......24,24,24
Runs Created/27 outs.....4.76............4.70
MVP Shares...................1.28...........0.26
Gold Gloves, catcher.......5.................3
Games.........................1774............1854
I think Freehan was more highly regarded by his comtemporaries than Parrsih was, too. Freehan played all 15 of his seasons for the Tigers; Parrish only played for them 8 full and 2 partial seasons. In the New Historical Abstract, Bill James rates Freehan 12th among catchers, Parrish 19th (no shame there!). BTW, can you tell I'm a Bill Freehan fan? Parrish would certainly be a decent choice, but I'll go with Freehan.
Callison, Simmons, and Reed will be thought about.
Callison was quite probably one of the 15 greatest players in Phillies history. I would think hard about that one.
For Bonds, he's still active and I HATE him with a passion for many reasons. He will never be on an all-time team of mine, no offense.
No offense taken. We're all entitled to our own opinions, and we all have our favorite and least favorite players. I feel the same way about Bonds as you do. Can't stand him personally, but I simply can't ignore the numbers he put up, even pre-steroids (with the Bucs).
Yaz played mainly at LF, so I won't have him as a 1B.
Surprisingly, Yaz played 765 games at 1B. Vaughn played 1305. Regarding Clemens (and Bonds/Sosa), I believe I do recall your indicating active players would not be considered. My bad, and that also explains why Maddux wasn't on the Cubs or Braves.
BTW, has Smoltz retired yet?
No, he was a starter last year. And a darn good one!
Good luck with the project, sorry I quit early but the Braves started to confuse me. I think the team threads will produce some good ideas, too.

As I had no school today, I really got a move on the rosters and most of the players are in the league now. I just need maybe 2 dozen more players for the rosters to be complete. It should be done this week. (I hope!)

Update: I'm almost done but I have been busy lately. Also, the computer I'm doing this on is a piece of crap. I'll try to finish it this weekend and see if I can make this downloadable.

I couldn't fix the other PC and I can't get put the game on this PC, so I have to stop this project unless someone would like to finish it for me. I have the rosters, just no league to put them in.
