Craig Biggio got my vote without any hesitation. There isn't a player on your list who isn't deserved, but Biggio is the guy who, while not really great in any single category, combines a whole facet of talents along with absolute effort and all-out hustle on EVERY GOL-DERNED PLAY! He's like Pete Rose but without being an ass.

Nolan Ryan, maybe most of his career was back and forth between teams but damn could he pitch.

this was a tough decision, but I went with Nolan. I have been a huge Biggio fan since 1988 so he'd be my favorite Astro of all time. But the way a pitcher impacts the game has got to count more. Nolan was so dominating!

I'm surprised by the vote. I never thought Ryan would get so much support. I figured it would come down to Biggio and Bagwell.

I don't know how it can be anyone but Bagwell. Amongst Astros with 3000+ AB's Bagwell leads RCAA, OPS versus the league and OWP by a ridiculous margin. And he absolutely dwarfs what any pitcher has done.

I had the same exact initial reaction, but after pondering it further I realized that it had to come down to being between Biggio and Bagwell. Overall, I would give the slight edge to Bagwell due to the superior batting totals. However, ask me this again two years from now and my vote may very well go to Biggio.

And he absolutely dwarfs what any pitcher has done. The reason it can be someone besides Bagwell is that not all of us buy into tall of the columns of sabermetrics to be our final judge, and some of us who actually saw a lot of these players perform a whole lot live and in person have found other redeeming qualities that none of the sabermetric formulas can ever come up with.

How is Biggio better than Bagwell? Maybe you can make a case with defense and stolen bases, but Bagwell was leaps and bounds ahead of Biggio with the bat.

Jeff Bagwell is hands down the greatest Astro in history. Not only has he had a spectacular offensive career, he's spent his entire career in Houston. How can there be anyone else?
As for Nolan Ryan... as much as I enjoyed watching his blazing fastball, he played with the Astros for just nine seasons (out of 27) and he never won more than 16 games in a year. I'd hardly call that dominating.
Ryan is overrated, with all the strikeouts, he also had a lot of walks, and was never a consistent winner.

I didn't incude Mike Scott because his peak was rather short and in all honestly I don't think anyone can argue that he was the greatest Astros ever.

You have got to be kidding me that Ryan overrated!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah right so 5700 ks is overrated throwing 96 at the age of 46.... Not bad, he retired and it took him about 5yrs to get into the hall of fame.... Some people die waiting to get inducted to the hall of fame....

Tough question. For me it's between Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio, but I'll go with Biggio. He has played 3 different positions for the Stros and hasn't complained, Craig Biggio is a model player.

None of you guys are Astros fans. I can say that without hesitation or equivocation; it's the plain truth. I would point out that you are most likely smoking some bizarre combination of horseshoes and crack, but Bill would send me a PM saying that drug references used in correct context are somehow offensive on this forum, so I won't, although I will think it.
There is one Astro- his name is José, and his last name took 15 seconds for the crowd to stop doing...CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUZ! My mom would still marry José Cruz, hell, I would still marry José Cruz. Cheo- he was the man, the team, the all. Wynn? Morgan? Staub? Get real- Biggio and Bagwell have a real claim to the title at least, but Cruz was far and away the one. The most graceful- damn, if you guys are suppsoed to be Astros fans, you MUST have seen him play! NO. ONE. WAS. MORE. ASTRO. THAN. CHEO.

Here's my take here.
If JR Richard's career hadn't been cut short in 1980,IMO,he would have been one of the all-time greatest Astros.
That's just my opinion.
Other than that,it's very hard for me to choose between Ryan,Bagwell,Biggio, and Cruz.

LOL. Joe Morgan got 0 votes? Don't let 53820 see this, or this will devolve into another "regurgitating and throwing numbers back and forth" faux debate regarding Joe Morgan.
I vote for Bagwell, although Biggio is right there with him. Other than Bonds, Biggio has the most career value of anyone still in the Majors. He's all class and was always a smart, heads up, hustling player.
Bagwell is arguably the #3 or #4 greatest first baseman ever, and in his prime, he was a true 5 tool player.

What about Larry Dierker, he was the first "Mr.Astro", plus he was a darn good pitcher, maybe not the best, but every true fan knows about him, and loves him.
Terry Puhl=.993 lifetime fielding percentage.

In terms of being Mr. Astro, Dierker is the only serious competitor to Cruz, and certainly THE Astro pitcher- JR and Don Wilson were the big tragedies, Ryan and co. may have been better pitchers, but they didn't bleed Orange.
And how many years did Dierker cover the Domestands?

From 1976 to Current, I believe he covers 'Stros games on FSN.
Plus he was an amazing manager

As for Joe Morgan getting 0 votes, his best years were outside the franchise. If he had won back-to-back MVPs as an Astro, a strong case could be made for him. But otherwise it's like calling Wade Boggs the greatest Devil Ray of all-time.

but look at the teams he played for. Not a whole lot of winning teams so you cant expect him to win much, if hes not playing for a winner

My guess is most people voting never saw Jimmy Wynn play or even know who he is. That is what is sad about a poll like this where most names everyone knows and that there is this guy that most say "I have heard about that guy but he played so long ago". Well people look up this guy! No Jimmy Wynn and I am not sure there would still be a team in Houston!

The Toy Cannon was great. Power plus fielding.
Where's Cesar Cedano? His peak was certainly shorter than Biggio's or Bagwell's but he was one of the finest players in the '70s.

Morgan was one of the best players traded away by the Astros. But his prime years were in Cincy, not Houston.

Is Biggio's head too small? Why does his head look small in his batting helmet? Does he wear a large helmet with extra pading?
