The Yankees always have a good farm system. Just when you think they are aging, they bring in fresh players. I think it is interesting how the farm system works and what players go through. I heard rumor that Padilla might go to the Yankees. I hope the Rangers get some of their elite in the system.

Nardi Contraes said both Hughes and Sanchez will be pitching in Arizona league after the season. They are even sending a pitching coach with them. This is nice I really like both prospects. This is a solid league. I think it's short but what I hear is as good as Cape Cod.
Hopefully Melky will play for DR.

Hughes hasn't pitched enough innings.
This is the problem. The guy has been hurt for both years. This is the same situation the year before (he got hurt and did not get the innings in) and I am concern he will be in the starting rotation next year (like this year) and we will not know what to expect (5W, 10W, or 15Ws). Do we keep him in farm to get innings or call him up (like Kennedy) and see how he does against better hitters? I know Kennedy did not work out (it was a great test because I think it was against the Angels) but we did find out he is NOT ready for a starting spot and needs more work.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees beat a Pawtucket Red Sox team in the first game of the playoffs. Just beating a Red Sox team in the playoffs is pretty cool. Justin Christian really showed up. He went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s along with a home run. Now that’s clutch. I hope the Yankees bring him up again. He’s so fast that he makes the opposing pitcher miserable. He had a stolen base tonight as well. Chase Wright pitched well. I’d like to see a Scranton/Wilkes Barres game especially since they are in the next state over from me.
Hacker. Come on now. I was singing his praises all year. What amazes me is that no one brings his name up when it comes to “Who can help the Yankee pro club” in the future. Trenton must have a lot of confidence in him to let him start the first game of the series against another Red Sox affiliate. They must think highly of him. Hacker gave up 1 earned run in 5.2 innings. You can’t be surprised that the game was low scoring because these are the best of the best of the minor leagues at the highest level and a lot of players are almost pro ready. Oh yeah, Trenton won, 2-1.

With Kennedy it's not really that he needs work, his stuff is good. It's confidence that's the problem. For the most part he's been able to breeze by hitters in the minors with no problems and even in College.....for the first time He (just like Phil Hughes) are facing challenges which they had previously not encounted.
So with Kennedy when batters hit him well, he gets antsy/shell shock and now wants to start nibbling on the corners. Girardi had to talk to him about that a few times during the season. IMO, Kennedy doesn't know how to deal with this. His issue is mental...that's why I would like to see him start the season in SWB and maybe see where he's at come June before calling him up again.

Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees lost to the Pawtucket Red Sox by a score of 3-1. It was a well pitched battle. Ian Kennedy started and gave up 2 earned runs in 7 innings for the loss. That’s a good performance but we all know that he can’t pitch at the pro level. I don’t know if the Yankees should waste their time with him. He’ll come up to the pro level and get rocked like he has been doing all year. Since the Yankees aren’t really in the playoff race, they should let Kennedy start just to see if he has anything left. Justin Christian, Melky Cabrera and Juan Miranda all went 0 for 4. Series is tied 1-1.
The Trenton Thunder won a low scoring game over the Portland Sea Dogs by a score of 4-3. The Thunder dropped some thunder on Clay Buchholz, the failed Boston Red Sox pitcher and scored 3 earned runs off of him. The best thing about it is that super prospect Austin Jackson hit a 3 run bomb off of him. Catcher P. J. Pilittere was the hero however with his rbi single in the bottom of the 8th that drove in Chris Malec. P.J. Pilittere is supposed to be the Anti – A-Rod because he comes through in the clutch a lot. I’m surprised Trenton gave Jeffrey Marquez the start considering he only had 3 starts in Trenton. Trenton leads the series 2-0.
Staten Island clinched a playoff berth with their win on Thursday.

Minor League Playoffs Trenton moves on
It looks like Scranton is 1 game away from going to the finals. Of all pitchers the Wilkes/Barre Yankees had to rely on, it was Kei Igawa and he came through. That’s unbelievable. He pitched 7 innings giving up 1 earned run. He gave up 2 runs but 1 was unearned. What do you say about him? Do you bring him up? I mean, the Yankees are out of it whether you want to believe that or not. Justin Christian scored a run. Ben Broussard scored 2 runs while going 3 for 3. Eric Duncan hit a monster blast driving in 3. It was an impressive win.
Now I went to minorleaguebaseball.com and the writer for Trenton wrote that hero Colin Curtis walked with the bases loaded to help Trenton win the game in the top of the 9th and on to the Eastern Finals. What a way to win. Better yet, what a way to lose. Jason Jones didn’t pitch well for Trenton giving up 4 earned runs in 6 innings. The bottom line is that Trenton won, right? Even though he hit a bomb the other night, Austin Jackson finished with a low batting average. I’m really not surprised because he finished the year at .285. The greatest thing about this was that the series was a sweep. Anything with sweep and with the Red Sox name on the end of it is good.

Hi DisabledMess,
Igawa got the Yankee Pitcher of the Year and did much better than I expected. I still have hope for him next year. Possibly replacing Marte (pen) but I want a starting LHP (CC) for next Spring.

Can't wait for tonight: Hughes vs Colon at 7. I plan to watch it. This will be a good test for Hughes to see where he's at. This game eliminate PawSox so there is expectations and I want to see how he responds.
(Tony: nice job on Kennedy - keep him in Stanton until he's ready. His stats with men in scoring position has to improve next year ?WBSP? I forget. )

I typed something about Kei Igawa today...
Kei Igawa shuts down the best hitting team, shuts down critics
With all the terrible press Kei Igawa has received from his failures as a Yankee, he has done pretty well in Scranton. In his last 10 outings in the regular season, he has gone 6-2 with a 3.15 era and in the playoffs last night, he was even better (http://www.yankeesdaily.com/?p=4279) giving up 1 earned run in 7 innings against the best hitting team in the International league. On top of it, it was a Red Sox team he pitched against and being a Yankee, there’s always pressure when you face a Red Sox team. The Red Sox team he faced last night is loaded with talent. The Pawtucket Red Sox’s hitting dominated the league this year. Their hitting led the league in almost every category and Igawa pitched lights out against them. The Yankees should give Igawa another chance on the major league level before the year is over. I’m not sure how much longer the minor league playoffs will be but if he could even get one start in for the Yankees, then do it.
You have to give Igawa credit for not folding it up and calling it a day. I thought he’d never pitch well again but he proved himself by being named Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Pitcher of the Year. Even with the contract he signed with the Yankees he’s still out there trying to prove he belongs. It seems to me that he “does” have the mental fortitude to pitch on the major league level.
What an awesome feeling that must have been, being a fan in the stands watching Igawa send the side down in order in four of his last five innings and retiring the last 10 batters he faced. He looks very small in stature when I’ve seen him pitch but he’s actually 6’1, 210 lbs. He doesn’t look like he’s that big. That has to be a mistake. He looks pretty skinny too. I’m sure Cashman, who has been a failure in every way for the Yankees as a general manager is happy about Igawa’s performance. For now though, Igawa is the man.

I read all your posts because I am weak on our farm system. I just added to your post with that article. Always felt Igawa had ability after that BoSox game last year when they were going for the sweep. Igawa needed work and did better than I expected this year. I agree and I want to see him start this year (Acese is starting in place of Rasner, Dan is due, and I like to see Wright and Coke) but they will wait until the season is over with Igawa.
I still would start Igawa in Stranton next year along with Kennedy and Hughes (?). Like Tony said - later in the year. The point I like - he improving. If we move him in the pen (to replace Marte) he will lose innings that I feel are improtant.
Damn game today was postponed until 5 tomorrow because of Hanna.
Can't wait.

Cashman was the man who brought in David Justice and Xavier Nady.
He did draft Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Joba Chamberlain, Mark Melancon, David Robertson.
He signed Edwar Ramirez, Jose Veras, Jesus Montero.
His teams have made 4 World Series appearances with 1 Ring in what 8 years.
That's off the top of my head. So how can you say that Cashman has been an absolute failure as a GM?

Great Great Game. Had the feel of a World Series with pitching.
Both Hughes and Colon were great. One of those games who was going to blink first. Neither did.
PawSox brought in a heater FB in bottom of 10th to face Shelley. (I was thinking Shelley is very good FB hitter.) Walk off HR.
I still feel Igawa and Hughes will stay in Scanton until the season ends. Is it Durham Bulls? (I was so wrap up I didn't look).
Very encourage with Hughes Performance 4 stars: 11 SO 8 innining 0BB 4 hits.

Phil Hughes shuts me up
Scranton wins 2-0. First, I’m very surprised. Phil Hughes dominated the Pawtucket Red Sox. He didn’t get the win but he helped Scranton move to the Governor Cups Finals. 11 strikeouts giving up only 4 hits. I didn’t think Hughes had it in him to pitch this well. Like Igawa, I guess you have to give him start for the Yankees. Then Shelley Duncan hits a walk off home run to win the game in the 10th inning. I feel bad for Duncan. There’s really no room for him in the majors and I don’t think the Yankees have any plans to use him. You’d think that since the Yankees have one of the best teams in minor league baseball that a lot of great prospects would come from this team. There are good prospects but no one great that every one would want to trade for.
Back to Phil Hughes. I’m sure he felt embarrassed pitching the way he pitched at times this year but he has shown some resiliency. He faced one of the best teams in Minor League baseball and he passed with more than flying colors. I criticized him heavily when he got destroyed earlier in the season to the worst teams in the minor leagues. Did he ever shut me up. There’s nothing I can say to 11 strikeouts in 8 shut out innings.

Durham Bulls extend series
Bulls win over Scranton, 3-2. I watched the game on milb tv on the internet and the game was very clear on the screen. Jeff Niemann for the Durham Bulls was very impressive. He dominated the Scranton Yankees in 6.2 innings with a wicked breaking ball and never lost his cool. The Durham Bulls played great defense behind Niemann as well. On the Scranton side, I like the fact that Igawa decided to ride the bus for 7 hours with his team. That to me shows he’s a team player. I can’t remember how many times the announcer said, another 1, 2, 3 inning for Igawa but it was a lot until the 6th inning when it looked like the Bulls would score off Igawa but Igawa did a great job and got out of the inning. It was the type of performance I expected from Igawa since he was named the Scranton pitcher of the year.
I felt the Scranton manager left in Igawa one batter too many in the 7th inning but David Robertson did an unbelievable job getting out of the inning without letting in a run. I could tell Igawa was losing it and he didn’t have it anymore. I didn’t like the fact that Igawa was pitching against the blue monster and that he will be judged by a throwing error(that he made) that let in a run. Igawa let in 2 runs, 1 earned for the no decision. In the second inning, Justin Christian stole 2nd and 3rd base and I thought it was awesome because it led to an easy run for Scranton. Christian is a great weapon to have for the Yankees.
The game came down to one inning however when the game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th when Oneli Perez let a run in to lose the game. I didn’t like the body language Scranton showed in the top of the 9th when they went down 1,2,3. It just didn’t seem right. Justin Christian had a great game going 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, a walk and 3 stolen bases. You can’t ask for anything more from your lead off hitter. Scranton will try to close it out tomorrow night.

Scranton wins 20-2 for Governor’s Cup Title
That was one of the worst pitched games I’ve ever watched by one team. The Durham Bulls’ pitching was awful. The game was over in the third inning. Then with Scranton leading 16-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Juan Miranda hit a 3 run home run and started show boating around the bases raising his arms. I didn’t think it was cool. The umpire then warned both benches and tried not to allow Durham retribution. It didn’t matter because the Scranton manager protected Miranda and took him out of the game in the 8th inning just before Miranda was supposed to get up at bat. I thought it was a wimp move. He should of let Miranda get up at bat and teach and show him why you don’t show boat in baseball.
Phil Hughes was impressive for pitching in a minor league game but he got in trouble in the bottom of the 4rth inning walking in a run after loading the bases. One has to wonder if this was a major league game if he would of escaped without any further damage. I don‘t think he would. If he was pitching in a major league game, he would of got hit hard and the inning would of continued. He threw 97 pitches in 5 total innings and that’s a lot. To me, the final verdict on Hughes is incomplete in his short minor league stint. I don’t like bringing that up because this should be something the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and us fans should be celebrating.
Still, you can’t take anything away from 20-2. That’s total domination. No matter who was pitching or why for the Bulls, the bottom line is that Scranton won and they won convincingly. They are the champs. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp_mETx7qAg)

End of Quote
I turned it off at 16-1 and missed Mirandi. Even the Bull fans were getting ugly. I was surprised because I thought it was going to be a pitching duel with Davis who won their semifinal game like Hughes. (Did David Price pitch?)
Great Win. Cogratulations to Scanton. IL World Champions. Great report on Hughes. I am pleased with Hughes performances in the playoffs. He closed both series. In my opinon the PawSox is a better team than Bulls. One minor point was that knuckle curve that Moose showed him was working last night. You are also correct. They did not need to pitch him the 5th because the game was over but 100 is a nice number. I still think he needs work pitching in the stretch. When guys are on base he gets into trouble (walks). We see this with his RISP stats (scoring when guys on base). The 1st bases loaded and that 4th was a melt down (ump wasn't helping). 1 hit 1 hit batter 2 walks (?) Then the pitching coach comes out, calms down, and he strikes out the next three (great recovery).
I still want to see Hughes, Igawa, and Wright pitch this year. Why not? they deserve it.
Lastly, one consolation this year. Our farm system did outstanding. We beat PawSox and Portland in semifinals and they were rated #2 farm system. I think Trenton won EL last year. We won IL this year and may win EL (tied 1-1) this year.
Kudos to Brian even if I critisize him often. (Still on the Brian watch)

Trenton wins 4-1
Trenton won over Akron 4-1. I didn’t watch this game but according to the Trenton Thunder’s Official website (http://www.trentonthunder.com/recaps/zRecapDisplay.asp?key=20080913) and Mike Ashmore’s Thunder Thoughts (http://thunderbaseball.wordpress.com/2008/09/13/elcs-game-3-akron-trenton-2/) website, Austin Jackson stole the show. He hit a home run and made 2 catches over the wall to rob Akron of home runs. I’m glad the Yankees aren’t going to give him some experience in the outfield this year because we don’t need him to develop bad habits from a team that quit. It feels good when one of your best prospects singlehandly changes the face of the game. George Kontos pitched 4.2 innings giving up 1 earned run and that would be all the Aeros would score because Trenton’s bull pen shut them down after that.

Trenton Thunder are the Champs
The Trenton Thunder won the Eastern Conference Championship behind the great pitching of Jeffrey Marquez who gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits for the win. Then Jason Jones pitched 3 scoreless innings for the save. Trenton won 5-1. According to Mike Ashmore’s Thunder’s Thoughts (http://thunderbaseball.wordpress.com/2008/09/14/elcs-game-4-akron-trenton/#comments), AUSTIN. JACKSON. IS. CLUTCH. With two on and two out in the third, he hit a ball to short right field that former Thunder star Bronson Sardinha dove for but couldn’t come up with. Reegie Corona scored on the play. 1-0, Thunder.
He’s just what the Yankees need, a clutch hitter. The amazing thing about this is that the Yankees have their triple A Affliate and their double A affiliate as league champions. Congrats to the Trenton Thunder.

I just came across Baseball America's scouting report on the Yankees best prospects. (http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2009/267148.html)It's been up for a month, so I'm surprised it hasn't come up yet (unless I missed it).
Here's there ranking of the top 10 prospects:
1) Austin Jackson - OF
2) Jesus Montero - C
3) Andrew Brackman - RHP
4) Austin Romine - C
5) Dellin Betances - RHP
6) Zach McAllister - RHP
7) Alfredo Aceves - RHP
8) Phil Coke - LHP
9) Mark Melancon - RHP
10) Bradley Suttle - 3B
I don't think Coke would make this list without his great performance down the stretch with the big club. Isn't Kennedy technically still a prospect? Despite a rough year, I'd think he's still in the top 10. What about Gardner? BA must still consider him a prospect because they list him as the fastest in the system.
Also, this is BA's projected lineup for 2012:
C: Austin Romine
1B: Alex Rodriguez
2B: Robinson Cano
3B: Bradley Suttle
SS: Derek Jeter
LF: Xavier Nady
CF: Brett Gardner
RF: Austin Jackson
DH: Jesus Montero
SP1: Joba Chamberlain
SP2: Chien-Ming Wang
SP3: Andrew Brackman
SP4: Dellin Betances
SP5: Phil Hughes
CP: Mark Melancon
I think there's a lot to disagree with here.

I glanced at it earlier - I didn't put a great deal of stock in it for the reasons you've already outlined.

What applies to Coke applies to Aceves; the opposite applies to Kennedy and Gardner. BA seems to be fascinated with ML performance in this case, regardless of sample size.

1B: Alex Rodriguez
2B: Robinson Cano

SP4: Dellin Betances
SP5: Phil Hughes
CP: Mark Melancon
Nady will be gone; Cano may be gone; Jeter will not be at short; barring a surge of greatness, Gardner will never be the Yankees full-time CF'er; Hughes will be better than a fifth starter - and this rotation would never be in existence (though, I cannot blame BA for not projecting FA signings and the like). If Chamberlain, Brackman, Betances, and Hughes can pan out... watch out.

The Rule V draft was today. The Yankees lost Reggie Corona (IF-AA) to the Mariners, Zach Kroenke (P-AAA) to the Marlins, Jason Jones (P-AAA) to the Twins and Ivan Nova (P-HI-A) to the Padres in the major league phase.
In the AAA phase Andres Santos (P-DSL) went to the Pirates and Josue Selenes (P-SSA) went to the A's. Only one player was chosen in the AA phase and it didnt affect the Yankees. The Yankees didnt take any players in any of the phases.

I fully expect Ivan Nova & Santos to return to the Yankees. MAAAAAAAAAAYBE Nova might not if they convert him into a reliever & keep him on the roster but I really doubt it.
I'm glad that Whelan, Cox, & Horne weren't taken.

People To watch
Austin Jackson OF
Went off like a rocket after seemingly undeserved promotion to Tampa. The pedigree and projectability have always been there, hopefully the performance continues.
Alan Horne - SP/RP
Great pedigree, great build, great stuff, and has shown major improvements in command. Stuff is ready to make an impact in the ML bullpen in 2008, and has a higher ceiling as a starter than Kennedy.
Ian Kennedy - SP
Ranking here is no slight on Ian, as we love his ability to log innings at league average or better for years to come.
[B]Mark Melancon - CP
Top college closer in 2006 with mid nineties fastball and hammer curve. Has outstanding work ethic and off-the-charts makeup, so the grueling rehab from Tommy John Surgery should only make him better.
Jesus Montero - C
Monster power bat that shows great plate discipline for someone so young. Even if he doesn't stick behind the plate his offensive upside is still immense.

I'm really excited about Mark Melancon and I can't wait to see Austin Jackson. I hope he has a big year and gets a Sept cup of coffee.
Jesus Montero reminds me alot of Carlos Delgado. Big bat, hits for average...and if you recall Delgado also started out a catcher.

Because is they think Melancon can replace Mo keep joba in the rotation. Austin Jackson will be locking up starting in CF in the next 1-2 years. Montero does have a big bat and we could use a homegrown First Baseman or Catcher.

John Sickels’ over at MiLB.com has created a list of the Top 20 NY Yankees Prospects for 2009. I am very pleased with the way he ranked the prospects. Here is the list:
All grades are EXTREMELY PRELIMINARY and subject to change. Don’t get too worried about exact rankings at this point, especially once you get out of the top 10. Grade C+/C guys are pretty interchangeable depending on what you are looking for.
1.) Jesus Montero, C, Grade B+: I believe in the bat. Where he fits with the glove I don’t know.
2.) Austin Jackson, OF, Grade B: Should be a solid player but not a star. Will that be enough in New York?
3.) Dellin Betances, RHP, Grade B-: Very high ceiling, has flashed dominance, can he stay healthy?
4.) Austin Romine, C, Grade B-:More likely to stick behind the plate than Montero, though not as good a hitter.
5.) Zach McAllister, RHP, Grade B-: A favorite of mine heading into 2008, looks like a strong inning-eater type.
6.) Mark Melancon, RHP, Grade B-: Almost ready for major league action, should be good in pen and has closer potential.
7.) Jairo Heredia, RHP, Grade B-: Looks like a major sleeper to me, and this is an aggressive ranking.
8.) Andrew Brackman, RHP, Grade C+: Yankees propaganda is thick around this guy. Great arm, healthy now, but I don’t buy into the command yet. Want to see evidence.
9.) Phil Coke, LHP, Grade C+: I like what he did a lot last year. Should be a very useful pitcher.
10.) Alfredo Aceves, RHP, Grade C+: Has reached his ceiling, but like Coke he should be useful
11.) Wilkins de la Rosa, LHP, Grade C+: Intriguing power lefty with a fresh arm.
12.) Humberto Sanchez, RHP, Grade C+: Another power arm for the pen, command problems still an issue.
13.) Jon Albaladejo, RHP, Grade C+: Another solid pen arm if healthy.
14.) David Robertson, RHP, Grade C+: Yet another pen arm. ERA should have been closer to 4.00 based on the components. Hasn’t pitched 50 innings yet so he qualifies.
15.) Brad Suttle, 3B, Grade C+: Will need to show enough power for third base.
16.) Arodys Vizcaino, RHP, Grade C+: Very young, could rank in the top 10 next year if he develops properly.
17.) Christian Garcia, RHP, Grade C+: Another promising power arm if healthy.
18.) George Kontos, RHP, Grade C+: Will need more consistent command.
19.) Kanekoa Texeira, RHP, Grade C+: Power sinker/slider guy acquired in Swisher deal, yet another pen option.
20.) Eduardo Sosa, OF, Grade C+:Very high ceiling guy, but need some North American data. Could rank as high as 8 depending on criteria and how much you trust DSL performance.
21.) Eric Hacker, RHP, Grade C+: Surprise addition to 40-man roster, nice track record but injury-prone, fifth starter type when healthy.
Others: David Adams, 2B; Manuel Banuelos, LHP; Jeremy Bleich, LHP: Frank Cervelli, C; Kelvin De Leon, OF; Mike Dunn, LHP; Brett Gardner, OF; Alan Horne, RHP: Corban Joseph, 2B; Brett Marshall, RHP; D.J. Mitchell, RHP; David Phelps, RHP; Ryan Pope, RHP; Matt Richardson, RHP; Damon Sublett, 2B; Pat Venditte, RHP-LHP; Kevin Whelan, RHP.
As usual, don’t sweat so much about where the Grade C+/C types rank exactly on this list. After I get past the top 10 I don’t worry so much about exact placement, since I’m trying to concentrate on the book right now. Some of the Grade C guys could be C+ in the book, and vice versa.
SYSTEM IN BRIEF
The Yankees don’t have anyone in the system that is a sure-fire superstar right now, but there is a lot of material to work with here on the pitching side. I love Montero’s bat, but defensive questions prevent a higher grade at this time. He has star offensive potential, but where does he play? Jackson looks more like a solid player than a star. Both Romine and Suttle have major league potential but some questions they need to answer at this point. Young tools guys like Sosa and De Leon look promising but are so far away that they are hard to rank at this point.
Things look much better on the pitching side. Brackman has a high ceiling obviously, but I find the New Yorkhype about him highly annoying and, more importantly, very misleading. He is extremely raw for a college pitcher and until he actually takes the field in full-season ball and throws some strikes, I am keeping expectations in check. I like the guys ahead of him better at this point, particularly McAllister and Heredia. Coke and Aceves don’t have huge ceilings, but both look like useful major league pitchers. There are a LOT of power bullpen arms available.
Overall, this system needs hitters but has considerable depth in pitching, giving them a lot to work with on the trade market. They are putting more and more money into Latin America, and a less conservative approach in the draft should pay dividends.
—————————————–
I am very happy with the way he ranked Betances, Heredia, and Vizcaino. These three guys have some of the filthiest stuff. I have been keeping track of their statistics in the minor leagues, and I believe these guys could become something special some day. Not that the others can’t. It’s just that these guys seem to be flying under the radar on most peoples lists. Montero and Ajack are right where they should be. I agree with the way he ranked most of the remaining players. As you can see the Yankees have a lot of depth pitching wise. The hitting not so much, besides Jackson, Montero, & Romine. I wouldn’t worry about it though. The Yankees farm system is much better then people think.

You need to compare our prospects to other clubs.
We have NO ONE that can step in with confidence. Joba and Cano are the only 2 that made the team. Melky was always a question and still one and Gardner is a question this year.

Very happy about the AA (back to back championships) and AAA east champioship and I do like our prospects, good examples are Hughes, Aceves, and Melacon and am excited about Jackson. BUT
I do feel one needs to compare the farm system with the other clubs. I'd like to see this list of the other players. One, I did not see any graded A in that list. Two, do you know where the Yankee farm system ranks or its top 100 prospects this year. This is what Brian has been working on for several years. Three, it's not envy of other clubs - I depend on the "writers" to rate the players. I strongly feel in Brian's plan to bring young players into the roster. All I am saying is that Tampa Bay did a great job and I heard Minn is doing a good job. We need a solid farm system to compliment our free agent acqusitions.

Centerfielder = Austin Jackson (AAA)

you should really do some self research on the our farm instead of relying mostly on an ever changing rating system.you'd be surprised what we have.a lot better then what we had 7 years ago.I think you might be getting to hung up on were are prospects rank.like if they don't crack the top ten then all of a sudden its like cashman is failing.kinda funny how a kid like david price shows up and its like joba never existed.like we can just give up on phil and ian and just weep about how everyone else has good farm systems.solid farm system to compliment are free agent acquisitions?so i assume you want the yankees to have a no doubter prospect ready for the majors every year.ok we can do that if the yankees lose 100+ games to get the number 1 pick.and were not always gonna have free agents available like this at least next year anyways because besides holliday its not gonna be looking so good

I don't think the farm is terrible but its definitely fallen off. Joba, Kennedy, and Hughes are no longer prospects after last year and they were among our top prospects last year. Last years draft wasn't terrible but its banking on Brackman to a large degree who is a big risk and very far away. This year also promises to be weak with so many free agent signings giving up draft picks. Its definitely better than it was a few years ago but its not goign to crack the top five and plenty of teams have more pitching prospects than the Yankees.

It's been nearly two years since the New York Yankees drafted right-hander Andrew Brackman out of North Carolina State with their first-round pick in 2007.
With the approach of Spring Training, it looks like they will finally see one of their top prospects in a pinstripe uniform top.
Make that a big pinstripe uniform top.
The newly turned 23-year-old stands 6-foot-10 and weighs around 240 pounds, down from when he tipped the scales around 270 at the beginning of '08 Spring Training.
And while the answer to the obvious question is, "Yes, he played basketball for the Wolfpack," it was only briefly. He dropped his two-sport status after his sophomore year to focus exclusively on baseball.
A standout in high school in Cincinnati, where he posted a 1.04 ERA as a senior for baseball factory Moeller High, Brackman was sidelined off and on through his college career by a variety of injuries, including a hip injury as a sophomore and a sore elbow as a junior.
The elbow woes kept him out of NCAA postseason action that spring, but his 3.81 ERA as a junior at NC State combined with his strong showing in the Cape Cod League the previous summer and his potentially overpowering stuff prompted the Yankees to call his name with the 30th overall pick. And on the Aug. 15 deadline, they signed him to a big league deal worth more than $4 million.
Not long after that he underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, and as a result, he's yet to make his official pro debut for the club.
This past summer, Brackman worked his way back through a rehab program with the Yankees down at their Tampa facility. But any faint hopes that he might take the mound for the Gulf Coast League's Rookie-level team before the end of August ended when he underwent an emergency appendectomy which set back his timetable by another month.
He finally took the mound in instructional league and given the "all clear" sign, he was dispatched to Hawaii where he made eight starts for the Waikiki BeachBoys in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League.
Brackman went 3-4 with a 5.56 ERA, striking out 36 batters in 34 innings and limiting the league's batters to a .235 average. He went five or more innings in four of his starts, including three of the last four.
"His velocity was between 94-97 [mph], so he had no problems and he's ready to go for Major League camp," said Mark Newman, the Yankees' senior vice president of baseball operations. "His stuff is outstanding, and he's getting a feel for his delivery and throwing strikes. But first and foremost, he was healthy and, at times, dominant."
The delivery and mechanics are definitely the biggest challenge for Brackman, and not just because he has had so little mound time. For a pitcher of his size, there are both benefits and challenges.
"The benefits are the power and deception because the ball is released closer to the plate," Newman explained. "But the downside is you have long levers to manage, and it takes time. There aren't many of those guys in the environment to use as test cases, but most people believe that taller guys take a little longer to get their command."
That said, Newman added that Brackman has the advantage of being an exceptional athlete.
"To watch him run, he looks like he's 6-foot-2," Newman said of the young man who offsets that explosive heat with a knuckle curve and a developing changeup.
So while it's impossible at this point to make a prediction on Brackman's ETA to the big leagues, it's equally impossible not to dream about his upside.
...
I advise you to read the full article, which talks about JB Cox, Melancon, and much more. Exciting stuff, I just don't want to clog the thread up.
So a lot of people thought the Brackman pick was kind of controversial. Hip injury, needed TJ, then he had an appendectomy but that's just unrelated, a string of bad luck. He didn't look too great, but not too shabby.
He's a tremendous athlete who's 6'10 and can hit 97. I'm excited to see if this guy turns out to be a somebody.

Sanchez is already slated for the bullpen... Brackman, I'm not so sure about that.
CC Sabathia can opt-out after three seasons (and if he performs well he will), Burnett is an injury risk, Wang is a perpetual free agent, Chamberlain has injury problems, Hughes has injury problems - I don't see the Yankees rotation as being set right now, what with the fifth spot open... much less being set for the next decade.
Let Brackman start until he proves he can't.

Brackman has front line, ace stuff. You give a guy like that the chance to start if he proves that he cannot.
If he does prove himself yet the rotation is stocked up, you can trade him for a young, stud position player.

Brackman has front line, ace stuff. You give a guy like that the chance to start if he proves that he cannot.
If he does prove himself yet the rotation is stocked up, you can trade him for a young, stud position player.

Why not? The Yanks have not gotten any defense from the position for the past 12 years.

Hanley Ramirez's bat would work at any position - he could be a wonderful CF'er.
According to Ramirez and the Marlins, Ramirez worked a great deal on defense last offseason. His UZR last season, -1.1, certainly shows a great deal of improvement, and he actually did better and better as the season wore on. Besides, his bat more than makes up for his defensive shortcomings - which can't really be said about Jeter anymore. Hell, Ramirez's offense puts him pretty high above any other shortstop in the league.

This pitcher is going to be a great pitcher for the yankees. He is a great player and what people dont understand is that his kid was a catcher his whole life. His high school coach during his senior year,(it was a new coach that year) and his new coach was a former university of miami pitching coach said "garcia you should pitch" for graduating in 2004 and only pitching for 4 years he has done great. Now that he has become a pitcher he will a be great one. Wait till he understand his arm and pitching more and he will be a great bullpen pitcher maybe a 4 or 5 starter even though i think that is tough with CC, Burnett Wang Petite in the rotation.

I like Christian Garcia - he has a plus fastball and a borderline-plus curveball, with a solid circle-change. However, he is still a couple of years away from being a factor. He only has 5.1 IP above Single-A, and he had major elbow surgery that caused him to miss all of 2007, and other injuries that caused him to miss parts of 2006 and 2008.
By the time Garcia's ready, there will be at least one rotation spot open, as Pettitte will probably be done after this season. I also expect Sabathia to opt-out after 2011, so Garcia could be poised for a roster spot in 2012, when he's twenty-seven. By that time, though, he may be gone or in the bullpen.
As it stands, in terms of starters, I have Garcia behind Betances, Brackman, Heredia, and possibly de la Rosa and McAllister.

He's got potential. If he can stay healthy he could be good. Could also be an outstanding reliever if he can't maintain a starting workload.

I agree with that order. At this point he is probably the 6th best prospect although maybe 3rd in potential (behind Brackman and Betances). Don't forget Manny Banuelos either. Very young but with great stuff.
As for Sabathia opting out, I do not think it is a coincidence that his opt out is for the same year that Cole Hamels contract expires.

Melancon will be up soon, methinks. He has big-league stuff, and his command has improved - he nibbles too much, but that sort of adjustment is usually made at the big-league level.
I really hope Kennedy can make it to the Yankees and succeed. I love his make-up and command, and think he could be a very good third or fourth starter.

Claggett was not a "mistake". He's been decent and Girardi may have wanted to see where he was. I'm sure that calling up Melancon is going to be Cashman's call, not Joe's.
Aceves hasn't been doing well. He's given up 11R (10ER) in 10 innings.
I don't think you want to see him up here yet. Not how he's been pitching.
Steven Jackson's been much better. 6.1 Inn with 2 ER allowed and 3K/3BB.
Tomko's pitched 6.1 Inn without allowing a run.
This might sound crazy, but at this point I'm all for skipping Wang's next start and calling up Kei Igawa. His last start was yesterday and he went 7 Inn with 1 ER, 4 K's and 3 H's. I mean it can't get much worse than what Wang's been doing.

I would give Wang one more start at this point. With him being out of options, the Yankees can't afford to send him down - someone else will put a claim on him. In my mind, the Yankees should give him the start, send down a reliever with options remaining, and call up Aceves, Kennedy, or Igawa. If Wang gets shelled, at least the Yankees will have a "starter" to back him up.

Does Phil Hughes have any options left? Of if he gets called up does he have to stay up? If so then I would agree with bringing up Igawa and letting him take a turn or two in the rotation with Wang in long man role/working with Nardi Contreas to figure this out. At this point Igawa cant pitch worse than Wang and he cant pitch much better than he has been in AAA.

Options are season long if I understand correctly. Hughes has options. Not sure you want to call him up for 1 start though.
This time through, they can skip Wang.
Also Igawa is not on the 40 man. They would have to DFA someone (Ransom on May 2?) or put someone on the 60 day DL (Nady but then you can't bring up Duncan who makes the most sense as a replacement).

No one. I'd put Wang on the 15 DDL for the mental problems he's having and I tell the media he's got an inflamed forearm or something. With him on the DL, I'd call up Igawa. Someone, namely Contreras, needs to look at Wang up close and see what the problem is. Is it mechanics? Is his leg bother him to the point that he's not pushing off or finishing right for fear of hurting his leg? Something is definately up, we all know Wang and this is not the real Wang.

I know it's early in the season...but quite honestly I'm tired of seeing Cody Ransom playing 3B and being an automatic out. I'm ready to try something different. Give Pena more playing time...or look at what's happening in SWB.
Eric Duncan is off to a great start!
He's hitting .364 with a .410 OBP and a 865 OPS. Why not send Ransom down and give Duncan a shot? Alex will be back within a few more weeks. Duncan cannot possibly hit any worse than Ransom has.
Right now Duncan's confidence is probably riding at an All-Time high. If I'm Cashman, I take advantage of that and see what Duncan can do. If he fails, send him back and call up Berroa and by then Alex should be just about ready to man 3B again.

I'm willing to give almost anyone a shot at third right now. Ransom is probably the worst everyday player in the majors right now - he can't hit and he can't field the position, a horrendous combination, to say the least.
Duncan is still only 24. Granted, he regressed in his second season at Triple-A - but, at the very least, he's always been solid with the glove, making him an automatic upgrade over Ransom. If he can hit a bit, or at least provide less of an automatic out than Ransom, well - that's just gravy.
The Yankees will probably wait until May to bring up Melancon to keep him under team-control for an additional season. I can't say that I can blame them, but I think Robertson has proven himself at Triple-A.

Right now Duncan is riding high, he's off to a great start and giving him a 3 week trial at the Major League level is a better option than having Cody Ransom being the Automatic out that he is. The man strolls to the plate right now and it's 1-2 count before you know and he's completely lost after that.
Robertson has definitely mastered AAA and has nothing left to prove there.
I would love to trade Marte and give his spot to Robertson, leaving Coke as the only lefty in the pen.

I don't want to see Duncan up here. Not worth it. Maybe he rebounds this season and rebuilds what he once was. A couple of weeks now could turn him back down the wrong way.
Plus unlike Dom, I have never heard of him as a good fielder. Might be a decent corner OF by next year.

So you'd prefer to keep an automatic out in the lineup is what your telling me? Instead of trying something different and seeing what happens? In a couple of weeks it won't matter because Alex will be back and the point would be moot.
It's not like Ransom is the 2nd coming of Brooks Robinson, hell even Scott Brosius. I think the trade-off would be even. IMO, it doesn't hurt to try as he can't possibly be worse than Ransom.

Tony, Duncan is not on the 40 man roster - it has to be Mirandi. We need to reorganize the 40 man roster both pitching and IF.
Totally agree we need to get a replacement for Ransom for the bench when A Rod returns. I was hoping that triple several nights ago (lost in sun?) would turn him around but he hasn't shown MLB level at this point (fielding is fine).
When Nady come back Jackson will be gone.
When A Rod comes back Pena will be gone. (needs more ABs to evaluate but was a nice surprise in ST)
I feel we need a IF with a decent bat to PH and play adequate fielding.

I just checked and your right. So I'd have no problem in waiving Ransom to add Duncan at this point.
That "triple" was only a "triple" because Chin didn't chase it and appeared to think it was going foul. Wasn't a clean hit. Cody Ransom suffers from what I call Pedro Cerano-itis. He can only hit a straight fastball.
When ARod comes back, I'd send Pena down so he could get more ABs and call up Berroa who could play SS,3B,2B.

Veras and Ramirez were both good last season and while both have been a bit inconsistent, it's too soon to send them down for Tomko. That just doesn't make sense, if they're not hurt.
Tomko is a journey-man for a reason. Both Veras and Edwar are young and have show flashes of good pitching.
Why would you want a 3rd catcher? That truly makes no sense.
Look Posada is a good catcher mainly for his offense. No one is going to rave about his defense. Molina is a defense catcher and he's not going to hit. That's why he's a backup catcher. If Molina could hit like Posada with his defense, he'd be a starter commanding 5X as much as his currently salary. You can't have your cake and eat it too when it comes to a backup.
At least the Yankees finally have a decent backup catcher. Be thankful for that.

Huh? Berroa is in the Yankee organization. He's playing in SWB AAA.
He's off to a great start too. He's batting .340 with .390 OBP 2HR/13RBI.
Pena is only up for his glove. Anything else is gravy if you ask me.
Thanks. I thought he tried to get pick up after Pena got the spot. I am VERY weak on our farm system (this is why I really miss that person who did the posts and box scores last year - did a great job and I actually watched the Scranton games on MLB.TV). Again, good idea on Berroa.

I didn't say both of them...either or. They were ok last year but still both averaged 4.5 walks per 9. Who cares if their young and Tomko is a journey-man. We need a long man. Tomko pitched lights out in ST and is still pitching good in the minors.
Why would you want a 3rd catcher? That truly makes no sense.

Yes...I do want my cake and to eat it too...at least until Arod comes back. Even though it's early these games count too:) What doesn't make sense is saying Posada is a good catcher mainly for his offense. To me that is describing a DH. Which is what he is going to be doing a lot of this season. But I'm only talking about for now because when Arod comes back we will be able to afford having Molina bat at the end of the lineup. Like I said previously....I would like a third catcher so that when Posada is DHing we can pinch hit for Molina if need be. And right now if Molina isn't catching then that means Posada is. Which isn't good imo. Your right Molina is a backup. Problem is he is having too many ABs for being a "backup'. Molina has 20 ABs so far..that's close to platooning than being a backup.

I think Tomko is scatching his head and drinking shots since Jackson got the call. I am still pissed. First, Claggett then Jackson. Is this shot stick decision management? Some say Claggett was NOT a mistake (everybody has their opinion) but I watched him that game and felt bad for him. (Ask him what he learned from that day? He may go back to school.)
Po and Molina are great and I have no problem Molina having more ABs. We can NOT afford the luxury to carry a third catcher. This was based on Po and discussed earlier. Can't wait for next year Po as DH and Montero as catcher.

Jackson and Claggett are on the 40 man roster (as is Robertson but he had already pitched and couldn't have been called up).
Melancon, Tomko, Igawa, and Cox are not on the 40 man. Someone would have to be DFA'd to call one of them up. Maybe that is Claggett or Jackson but why risk losing them at this point for one or two outings in a mop up role.
Domenic

Brett Tomko has never been better than a mop-up type pitcher, and he shouldn't be treated as such - he's doing well enough in the minors because he is a decade older than most of the players there.

Is Eric Duncan back? Through almost a month he's crushing the ball to a line of .326/.400/.419. I think he could hit better than Ransom/Berroa/Pena. Should they call him up? If he hits it would do wonders for his trade value.

I think he needs a full season at AAA and then winter league time in RF/LF. He might be in line for a position next year.
A large part of his problem was being rushed. Calling him up after 1 month seems to be repeating the mistake.

The Yankees only need Duncan for maybe 2 weeks until Alex gets back.
So I don't see where this could hurt. Honestly, Eric Duncan doesn't fit into the Yankees long term plans. He's blocked at 3B and 1B. The Yankees now have him learning to play LF. Two weeks of Eric Duncan can't be worse than what Ransom was doing has been my argument for awhile now.

Duncan was rushed and was terrible. At one point he was a top prospect. Bringing him up now could be a major setback for him. The expected difference for two weeks of Duncan vs. two weeks of Berroa does not seem worth it to me.
He will probably never be more to the Yanks than trade bait BUT we do need corner OF's for 2010.

I agree with Tony. He has no future with the Yankees. At third and first he's blocked for eternity by two massive contracts. I don't see him as a future outfielder for them either. Its so easy to buy guys like that as free agents.
The idea is that maybe you catch lightning in a bottle and he hits a few home runs before the league figures him out (Shelley Duncan type). Given his former reputation this might fool some teams into thinking he's back and net them something in a trade.
Next year, you're right, they'll need a DH and two corner outfielders but theirs more than enough big free agents to sign out there.

Duncan was rushed, but that was a lifetime ago. He seems to have matured and like I've said he's off to a great start so RIGHT NOW, his confidence is at an all time high. Why not take advantage of that and see what he can give you for two weeks? I know how terrible this sounds, but everything points to Duncan not having a future with the Yankees.

Thank you MR. That's my point exactly. The Yankees have done this plenty the last few years and it's worked out mostly. Aaron Small, Shawn Chacon, Shelly Duncan, Dan Giese...all had nothing to lose when the Yanks threw them out there and they are performed well.
Next year the Yankees will need 1 corner OFs, but Eric Duncan will probably not be one of those corner OFs. Nick Swisher has another year left on his current contract. So unless the Yankees move him, he's here in '10 also.

The Yankees just signed Casey Fossum - perhaps they are making the move to bring up a long reliever sometime soon, then?
Aceves really seems like the ideal choice for a long reliever. He is blocked in the rotation by a few arms, and he has proved himself time and time again in the minors. While I wouldn't expect a full season out of him like his September audition in the Bronx, I do believe that he could be more than serviceable at the big league level, in the back of the rotation.
I am curious to see if the Yankees are waiting to see what happens with Wang before bringing up a long reliever. Perhaps he'll fill that role when he's "healthy," as a means to get back into the groove of things?

I missed the game so this may not be all true but my point is to have a long reliever like Aceves (or Casey Fossom (not crazy about but have to do R&D) to take over in 4,5,and 6 innings. All the runs today were scored in the 7th and CC had 120 pitches. This is poor management that we have seen before. This is the one point that really sucks with Joe. WAKE UP. Take the starting pitcher out before the 7 if he is struggling.

You missed it. CC was not struggling. He was pretty dominant. The first run was all DJ. In the 7th, he was hitting 99 on the gun and would have been out of the inning but a slow roller got past him and Cano could not make the play just to the SS side of 2nd.

The rumor is Brian could (should) have waited for him to clear waivers so he will bounce someone on 40 man roster. (I don't like Marte but I think it will be Jackson, Veras and I don't care if he is out of options)

It does, to an extent. By bananas I meant keep doing what he's doing and start posting some power numbers via XBH/HR. Through the first 80 ABs he's only got 5 XBH. There is no reason to call him up. Trading Tabata will never look good in hindsight, in my opinion. At the time, I do think it was a fairly solid move - the Yankees needed another outfielder and bullpen help, and Nady and Marte were both great options for those spots. Nady, though, has been hurt and Marte ineffectual (and now injured).
As of now, Tabata hasn't looked good with the Pirates - .250/.324/.297 in 71 at-bats this season. The Yankees will need more bodies for the outfield next season, though, and Tabata's still a few months shy of his 21st birthday... I just can't see it having been a good deal.

I think Tabata might develop into Xavier Nady someday. So trading him to get Nady and Marte seemed pretty smart at the time. Obviously the injuries make it look less than ideal now but Tabata does not seem on track to become the star we had hoped for.

If Tabata makes the majors theirs a good chance he's going to be a star, so I don't see Nady as a good comparison. I've heard his potential compared to Manny Ramirez (exxageration though probably). However, the chances of him making it are low. So, its still tough to say. At the time with the Yankees needing another bat/reliever to make it into the postseason it looked good, but that didn't work out. What/if they get any draft picks for Nady/Marte when they leave will throw another factor into it.

What/if they get any draft picks for Nady/Marte when they leave will throw another factor into it.
Nady was supposed to be a star when he was coming up too.

I heard the Manny talk too but Tabata has to show a lot more power than he has ever shown for that to even be in the realm of discussion. At this point, I just don't see that ever happening.
Maybe Nady, Jose Guillen, Juan Rivera, type of player. Not a bad guy but nothing tremendous.

I think Cervelli was great behind the plate last night. I hope this guy sticks around and helps improve the pitching staff.
Agree. I think long term he could be a nice steady back up. Probably nothing more but I think he can at least replace Molina.

Brett Tomko has never been better than a mop-up type pitcher, and he shouldn't be treated as such - he's doing well enough in the minors because he is a decade older than most of the players there.
I hope you (feel) are wrong and this was way overdue. I have more faith in Tomko than Marte (which is not saying much). I hope uses him instead of a bench warmer.
We'll see.

Tomko's career numbers (as a reliever):
178.1 IP, 186 H, 66 BB, 130 K, 4.95 ERA, 1.41 WHIP
Any faith you have in him is misplaced and nonsensical. There is no logical nor reasonable means by which you can say that he deserves anything other than a bench/mop-up/minor league spot. He deserves a shot to prove himself, I suppose - but he's never been good.

Mostly agree here and hate to see Robertson go down for him. Before we had no long guys, now we have 2.
I think his success this year is more small sample size than anything BUT
Maybe it is a result of pitching fewer innings. He used to have a good fastball and not much else IIRC. So maybe in short relief he can focus on that fastball more.
Last year it looked like he threw his split fingered fastball and curve ball more and his slider less. Perhaps there has been some development in one fo those pitches. I really do not know, but there is a chance.

I think Robertson, Coke, Rivera, Bruney, and Ramirez should be mainstays in the bullpen - other than that, I would leave the rest up to who is pitching well and who needs some work in the minors.

He had a really good 07, but he went through a few DL stints last year with his right arm. I don't think he ever underwent surgery, but his arm was giving him a lot of problems. I just checked up on his numbers this season, and so far it looks like he's just been getting rocked, although it's only been three starts. Still, more strikeouts than walks, and an ERA close to 8 doesn't look too good.

Just looking at Kei Igawa's AAA stats. He's 4-1 with an era below 4, which is okay, but his stats have a certain weird consistency -- he is lights out against lefties, and at night, and when there is no one on base -- an ERA of less than 2. But when he has men on base his ERA jumps more than five-fold to 10. There was a lot of discussion about this when he first came over to the majors and it's stayed just the same in AAA. You expect an ERA rise, of course, when there are runners on -- but by a multiple of 5+? Also, while searching around I found a story saying that Guidry had changed Igawa's motion and that Igawa was never the same after. Anybody else heard this?

Brackman is one of those rare pitchers that I may send to the bullpen without giving him much of a chance at the ML-level. He has great stuff, but he is horrifically inconsistent and has quite the extensive injury list, dating back to his High School days. I actually see him, injury-history, stuff, body type and all, being comparable to Jon Rauch - though, I think he could be better.

If he takes the mound when there are guys on base, it's a bad crapshoot going by the numbers. The differential between night and day games is so great that at one time he wore sunglasses in day games to try and recreate night conditions. He's so good against lefties it would be tempting to make him a specialist, but he does give up flyballs so you might not want to stick him someplace like Fenway in a tight game. The worst thing is his walk tendency. He's one of those guys who either strikes you out or gives a free pass. Disciplined batters are his undoing, and I suspect that's been the big difference between Japan and the Majors (and maybe between AAA and the Majors). The last thing you want to see when you're a few runs up is a reliever who starts putting guys on base. But right now he's no worse than Veras.
One question for me is Wang. The club is winning without him. Sabathia is throwing well, Pettite's grinding along, Burnett's not yet what I was hoping for but doesn't look likely to lose his spot, etc. Your best pitcher over the past two years can't be left sitting on the bench hoping for the occcasional two-inning outing.
Last thought: Has Texeira finally silenced those who think, nonsensically imho, that defense doesn't matter at first base? He's saved Jeter's butt repeatedly and killed rallies a number of times. Without him at first the errorless-game record would never happen.

Part 2: YES, I think his gold-glove defense at first is amazing but what would people say if there was no offensive production? But it blows my mind how much he bails us out. I've never seen someone play first base like that. It's a shame that so many people say "This guy is a liability in the field, let's put him at first base."
In the big game when defense counts, I want Teixeira at first base.
I have no idea how to explain the Wang thing. But if he can come back...... six-man rotation? No idea.

Great point. Mark doesn't get enough credt. What a difference at First from last year and Giambi. Remember how we would pou Doug in for defense and then have him come up in the ninth! Mark has been big.
Mikesty, I hope Wang does good in place of Andy and would like to see that modified 6 man rotation. I even would put Andy on it as to how he tire at the end of last year. 200 innings is a lot. CC and AJ (maybe Wang) 5 day rotation and (Wang), Andy, Hughes, Joba on 6 days.

I like the idea of Igawa becoming a specialist. Especially depending on what is going on with Marte. I think he might be more confident in a more limited role.
Wang should get work. Personally I would have skipped Joba in his last spot after the knee (give him time to fully heal and take some innings off). I would do the same with Pettite this time around. Wang could slide into those spots. Both Hughes and Joba are on innings limits, they are going to need breaks. Pettite is no spring chicken and despite his contract could use a break here and there.
On Tex's defense, sure it helps some. But its one thing to get it from a guy that hits like Tex and another to get it from a guy that hits like Minky.
No way, defense at first base can make up the offensive difference between say Minky and David Ortiz, which was the poor choice that Minneapolis made some time ago.

Now I have to go and spoil our harmony, Clipper. Can't see a modified six-man rotation working. Not just a question time on-time off, but what the matchups are. Also, I think Hughes isn't yet making the grade and I'm getting the feeling that, at this stage in his development, he might be one of those guys who's AAA+ -- tops in AAA but not quite prime time. There's no reason to send him out there with Wang on the bench. Since his return, Wang's tossed five scoreless innings. I'd bring in Wang now and either use Hughes as a long reliever, or send him down where he can work in a regular rotation and be available later in the season. As for Joba, I'm still not convinced that he has the physical makeup of a starter, and I suspect the Yanks have the same doubt and that's why we've seen the Joba rules. After trashing Veras, I have to say that when he seemed to suddenly discover both his slider and the strike zone the other day -- after giving up the homerun -- he looked like a totally different pitcher. For the time being, I'm still holding my breath.

Kennedy just doesn't seem like the type of guy who can got all out for an inning or two in the bullpen. Besides that, by next year he may have been passed over by Zack McAllister who is murdering AA hitters right now. I honestly see no future for Kennedy with the Yankees. With only one spot in the roatation likely to open up in the next year or two and with Phil Hughes and Aceves standing in front of him for that spot I don't think he fits in with theYankees future as anything other than trade bait.

Probably right but often guys find an extra mph or two out of the pen. Aceves does not throw hard. Neither did Mendoza. It's worth a shot to use him as the long man next year if he is healthy. Let him get some confidence against big leaguers and either build up some value or be useful.

However, you made a typo or two in the W-L records for the second game of the AA doubleheader. Bowie won the first game but appears to have another loss by the time the second game rolls around. Trenton should add one in the loss column, Bowie should add one in the win?

For what it's worth, the Eastern League is very much a pitcher's league, and Trenton is an extreme pitcher's park. The lack of power is somewhat disconcerting, but, on the positive side, he's drawing a fair amount of walks, running the bases extremely well, and, from what I've heard, fielding the position even better than before.
Dom, he is playing in Scranton.

He was promoted to Trenton which is the AA team. Scranton is the AAA affiliate.

Zack McAllister is absolutely dominating AA. We're getting to the poin were you have to consider making some callups. Montero and Pat Venditte also have to be candidates.
Being former Staten Island Yanks players, I'd really love to see both McAllister and Venditte in the Bronx. Lord knows we need them. Look at what happened today with the Rays beating us 9-7. Sabathia has proven himself to be no prize, sad to say. And I won't say what I want to about Rivera. I'll bet Okajima or Papelbon will never pitch so horribly.
In a program of a baby bomber game last year, it said that Venditte has major league potential only as a righty. I still hope he can come to the majors with both lefty and righty pitches. Remember that Mariano Rivera was already about 27 when he became our closer. Doesn't mean Venditte will do it, but I hope. I saw him pitch 3 times last year and was it ever entertaining when he switched hands with the glove, never mind the side-arm motion as a lefty.

if he can get back to 100% at swb then we have a good candidate to help the yankee bullpen
and i'm happy to see Ajax pick up another 2 hits.and also happy to see humberto sanchez taking off the dl and put back on tampa.another arm that could prove usefu if he can put it all together

Lemme start with Alan Horne. I was at one time big on the guy, but have soured very much on him. The guy just cannot stay on the field...and recently when he is on it I begin to wonder what was I even thinking?!
Horne's last outing lasted just 1 inning. In that inning he gave up 8 Runs, 7 were earned. It seems like every time the guy goes out there he gets absolutely pounded.
Dellin Betances: I think I'm pretty much sold that he's a Player who the Yanks should package soon while he's still got good value. Personally, I don't think he'll see Yankee stadium as he's too erratic and inconsistent for my taste.
Alan Horne (AA)
5 Games: 0W-3L | 15.1 Inn | 25 H | 13K/16BB | 11.15 ERA | .393 BaBIP
Dellin Betances (A+)
9 Games: 2W-4L | 40.2 Inn | 43 H | 24K/22BB | 4.87 ERA | .353 BaBIP
Now the good news:
Zack McAllister (AA) (I love this kid)
11 Games: 5W-2L | 67.2 Inn | 54 H | 49K/20BB | 1.60 ERA | .265 BaBIP
Mark Melancon (AAA) (Not as lights out as Pre-Yankees debut, but still been money)
17 Games: 0W-0L | 24.2 Inn | 18 H | 31K/7BB | 2.92 ERA | .298 BaBIP
Pat Venditte (A)
25 Games: 2W-1L | 28 Inn | 20 H | 38K/1BB | 0.64 ERA | 302 BaBIP

Too early to give up on Betances. Horne might be done. Let's see if he can regain his form and make it as a reliever. Ditto for Garcia, the guy cannot hold up starting.

Too early? So what. I'd bet the farm that the guy probably won't make the bigs. And that's why I'd trade him while his stock is still high. Why keep waiting? The kid isn't just wild...he's also injury prone. Not a good mix, IMO.
The way things are 5 years from now the Rotation will probably consist of:
Joba, CC, Hughes, McAllister, Kennedy, Heredia or something to that effect and in no particular order.

You'd lose your farm. He'll make the bigs. Whether it will be as a starter or reliever and what he will amount to is up in the air.
But he will make the bigs.

I'm very high on Mitre. His last year in Florida was very solid. He had a high ERA but FIP indicates it should have been a lot lower. If he replaces Tomko it would be a huge upgrade and I think he's right behind Hughes on the depth charts.

I agree on Horne. Add him to the long list of flameouts in the history of pitching. Its amazing to look at guys lke Cox, Sanchez, and Horne and think about how high we were on them just a year or two ago.
Don't give up on Bettances quite yet. Most of what I've heard about him has him very far from the majors even in best case scenario. However, if he gets there he has a high ceiling. Sort of similar to Brackman. The truth is that most of these guys will never live up to the hype for them but some of them will and that handful of guys are worth much more than the veteran rent-a-player we'd get for them right now. Honestly, I just try to ignore what those two guys do right now.
Zack is dominating AA and at a young age to. He'll probably get a promotion by the end of the year and maybe even some ML time in September. I think he's from the same draft as Hughes/Kennedy/Joba/Melancon. That was really a sick draft.
I want Mark in the majors for Veras. I don't care how good his stuff is, the guy can't get outs.
The fact that Pat hasn't gotten a promotion yet makes me think the Yankees don't really consider him a true prospect. He's making those hitters look like little leaguers and he's to old for the league anyway. He needs a call up.
I want to point out the job Jeremy Bleich is doing in Tampa as well. The Yankees got killed for picking him in the draft and he's proving people wrong very quietly.

You could say that about anybody though. Its to soon to tell with Bettances.
Absolutely no idea what the rotation will look like in five years. In 2004 we didn't know who Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes or Chien Ming Wang were, maybe some knew Wang but he was never a top prospect. Not to mention the free agent signings. Its hard enough predicting a rotation from one season to the next. Five years in advance is impossible. If Bettances or Brackman realize their full potential then the Yankees are going to make room for them somehow.

I think Alan Horne should be moved to the bullpen. I doubt that he would fetch much in a trade (or that he would tip the scales in the Yankees favor, either), and I doubt that he is ever going to be able to stay healthy. He's already 26, and he has been hurt nearly every year since his senior year of High School. With the exception of 2007, Horne hasn't been effective, either.
I could see Horne being like Phil Coke, personally. His fastball has been in the low-90s this season, but it could explode to mid-to-high 90s with shorter stints. I don't know that he would be effective in that capacity, but I think he's an ideal candidate for the switch.

Andrew Brackman must be testing the patience of the Yankees organization. He is maddeningly inconsistent.
On another note, D.J. Mitchell is very impressive. While he is a bit older than his competition, his peripherals are incredibly strong - 2.4 GB/FB and 3.8 K/BB stand out, in particular. Mitchell is garnering a fine amount of strikeouts (nearly 10 K/9) and a ton of groundballs - an excellent combination for such a young pitcher.
