and this thread will also include guys i would like to see the Reds go after (though there's little chance of it, as most of them would be youngish). my comments (if any) on the transactions are italicized.

10-2-05
Aaron Holbert outright to AAA Louisville.
he's intending to accept the assignment.

10-10-05
Sent RHP Chris Booker outright to Triple-A Louisville; Booker refused the assignment and is now a free agent; INF D'Angelo Jimenez and RHP Ben Weber elected free agency.
i think Booker got screwed by the Reds all year. for some reason, Weber stayed on the 15-day DL all year, meaning that was taking a roster spot all year from someone. i think he's probably done.

Marlins released RHP Tim Spooneybarger
he missed the year with TJ and should be ready by the end of April. he's still young (he'll turn 26 next year) and has never had a really bad year in the game. i'd like to see him as a non-roster invitee to spring training.

10-10-05
Tigers realease RHP Jason Karnuth
he's 31, and his low K rate means he's the kind of pitcher i usually try to avoid. however, he has almost a 3.5:1 GB:FB ratio, and doesn't allow many homers. not even in the extremely hitter friendly Pacific Coast League. another guy i'd like to bring in as non-roster invitee.

10-13-05
Toronto Blue Jays outright RHP Jason Arnold to Triple-A Syracuse.
a little rule explainaton, when you are outrighted, that means you cleared waivers and are now off the 40-man roster. i am utterly shocked Arnold made it through. his has great minor league periphials, and will be 27 next year. i would have liked to have seen the Reds claim him. yes that would automatically mean a 40-man roster spot for him, but at worst, you release him at the end of the spring.

10-13-05
Seattle Mariners activated RHP Jorge Campillo from the 60-day DL and outrighted him to Triple-A Tacoma.
Campillo was signed out of the Mexican leagues this year. he was unhit upon in 4 big league innings this year, and had a 2.71 ERA in Tacoma in 12 starts. i'm not sure what the nature of his injury was, but he's another guy i would have claimed off waivers (unless he had TJ or shoulder surgery).

Los Angeles Dodgers
Designated LHP Ryan Ketchner and LHP Derek Thompson for assignment.
i'd love to see the Reds claim both of them. Ketchner is starter with a great K rate, but missed the end of 2004 and all of 2005 with Tommy John surgery. Thompson has a good K rate, a very good GB:FB rate, and an exceptional HR/9 rate. i have no idea why the Dodgers are DFAing him, other than htey think he'll clear waivers since he's a 5'10" tall, therefore scouts hate him.

10/19/05 New York Yankees
Sent 2B Mark Bellhorn outright to Triple-A Columbus; Bellhorn refused the assignment and is now a free agent.
i would pursue Bellhorn for a one or two year contract, at about $800,000/year with incentives to $1.9 million. acquiring Bellhorn makes it real easy for Dan O'Brien to not excercise Aurilia's $2 million option. of course, if i were in charge, i would have given Rich his walking papers already...especially in lieu of this.

Declined the 2006 contract option on RHP Ramon Ortiz; The Reds and INF Rich Aurilia mutually agreed to decline his 2006 contract option; IF/OF Jacob Cruz declared free agency; Named Jim Pransky professional scout.
that took long enough. Cruz might return. i know nothing about Jim Pransky though.

Signed OF Dewayne Wise to a Minor League contract and invited him to Spring Training.
five tool player. probably had his development stunted by Toronto letting him play 28 big league games after selecting him in the Rule V draft (and sitting for the other136 games) he's actually a Reggie Taylor clone as far as his skill and ability are concerned. the difference being Wise actually has good instincts. not a bad pick up for depth, but God help us if he actually sees the majors next year.

The single biggest potential impact any one move could have this off-season is the sale of the team to Robert Castellini. Perhaps he could clean out the Allen/O'Brien dunce-factory and give Paul DePodesta a five-year contract and a half-decent budget?

Oh, wait!...I'm dreaming! *sigh*

11/18/05 Reinstated LHP Jung Keun Bong and RHP Paul Wilson from the disabled list; purchased the contracts of RHP Travis Chick from Double-A Chattanooga and 1B Joey Votto from Class A Sarasota; designated LHP Ben Kozlowski for assignment.
Bong and Wilson are procedural moves for the Rule V Draft. Bong should be 100% by 06, Wilson may not even make it to rehab games by then.
Chick and Votto are added to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule V Draft. the best pitcher in the Reds system, Carlos Guevara is unprotected, and could end up in Tampa Bay or Kansas City as a result. 2B prospect Kevin Howard is also unprotected, and could end up dang near anywhere. more importantly, in an effort to protect your top middle infield and closer prospects, wouldn't you DFA crap like Standridge and Keisler?

sweaver
11-21-2005, 01:48 PM
You mean Carlos Guevara? He was a Class A reliever last year at age 23. His stats were nice, but that hardly makes him the organization's "best pitching prospect." I'll grant you, someone might take a flyer, but 4-3 with 14 saves and a 2.45 ERA in 51 innings is just not that impressive for a Single-A reliever, even with 65 K and 14 BB in that time. If he was 19, I'd be more impressed.

Howard had a 774 OPS in AA at age 24 last season. He's hardly a hot prospect either, although if he's good defensively I wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot at a job.

But your point about DFA'ing Keisler and Standridge is well taken. I would've done it to clear space to take someone in the Rule 5 draft, though.

Ravenlord
11-21-2005, 01:57 PM
Howard is considered to be a defensive stud. far better than Olmedo, Machado, Aurilia, Freel, or Jimenez. and unlike the aforementioned, second is actually hist natural position.

as for Guevara, he and Bailey were the only Reds pitchers to dominate anything. Guevara is old for his league, however, he wasn't signed til he was 21 either. i think he got pigeon holed last year though, and should have at least seen Chattanooga, it was obvious after two months in Sarasota he was overmatching High A hitters.

kinda surprised he cleared waivers, i guess the timing was right. 4.04 ERA with 82 K, 31 BB, 129 H in 111.1 IP in AA and a 4.63 ERA with similar periphials in 44.2 AAA innings last year. dealt with bicep soreness most of the year.

Howard was a 3B in college and played some SS. The Reds moved him to 2B because of concerns about his arm strength. He still needs work around the bag, especially the pivot on double plays. BA say his best tools are his bat and makeup.

Dunno'. I took that from the 2005 Prospect Handbook. I did find this from one of the Organizational Reports at Baseball America though. It's from a couple of weeks ago.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/minors/nlcentral051107.html

Mr. Consistent--At The Plate

CINCINNATI--Kevin Howard has shown remarkable consistency at the plate in his three years in the Reds organization.

In 2003, he hit .285-9-75 at low Class A Dayton. In 2004, he hit .286-11-79 at high A Potomac. This season, he hit .296-12-70 at Double-A Chattanooga.

"His bat is good enough to compete on the major league level right now," farm director Tim Naehring said.

The question is his defense. Howard, playing primarily at second base, has committed 19, 25 and 24 errors in his three years with Reds.

"He needs to work on his consistency defensively," Naehring said. "It would help if he could play a lot of positions."

Howard, 24, was playing some third base in the Arizona Fall League. Once again, his bat's been good in AFL, as he was hitting .314-2-7 after seven games. But he had made three errors.

Howard, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound lefthanded hitter, was a fifth-round pick in the 2002 draft out of Miami.

"He's shown some power," Naehring said. "He hits the ball the other way very well."

Howard will probably start the year at Triple-A Louisville. A factor in that decision will be where William Bergolla goes. Bergolla, another top prospect, played second base last season at Louisville. Bergolla is still probably a year away from having a legitimate shot at making the big league club.

"We don't want two priority guys at the same position (in Triple-A)," Naehring said. "But Kevin's going to get a chance to compete."

Howard's best shot may be in a utility role--thus the time at third in the AFL.

Signed INF Anderson Machado, INF Aaron Herr and RHP Jake Robbins to Minor League contracts with invitations to Spring Training.
i'll take Machado over Olmedo. Herr just came off his best year as a pro with a 296/336/498 in AA Springfield, however he was 24 while doing it. Jake Robbins is Jimmy Anderson without the control or grounballs.

Signed pitchers Jimmy Journell and Tommy Phelps to minor league contracts.
Phelps would have been a good guy to claim when Flordia DFAd him...same with Michael Tejera...but Phelps will be 32 at season start, on the plus side, he is a lefty so he could be a late bloomer?

Tejera would still be a good lefty to grab and use him as a ROOGY as lefties eat him alive. Tejera will be 29 next season. but i digress...

Journell used to be a power arm with no control. now a labrum surgery later, he's a semi-power arm with no control. think of him as Luke Hudson, and then shudder.

the Casey deal isn't official yet, so it's not in this thread yet. however, O'Brien finally released Keisler. Kevin Howard or Carlos Guevara is expected to be added to the 40-man roster. and as expected, Cruz is returning to the Reds. should he be on the active roster that leaves Florida (and he almost surely will) he'll make $600,000 next year.

it's official, Dan O'Brien hates Cincinnati. i'd take Rich Aurilia over Womack, as Aurilia is better than Womack at everything but footspeed.

the PTBNL are IF Kevin Howard (who probably could already outperform Womack), and Ben Himes. Howard was a guy in the Jeff Kent mold, could hit consistantly, and with power, but really had no position. Ben Himes finally had a good year in the low minors at the age of 24 (read as not a loss). Tony Womack however, is 36 years old, two years removed from a fluke of a career year, and coming off a year where Christian Guzman hit better than he did (apperently O'Brien believes that it was because Womack was in the AL).
someone really needs to tell O'Brien that baseball is baseball, and that league has a fairly negligable affect on performance, let alone a 120+ points of OPS difference. one last thing, Womack doesn't really have that great of footspeed anymore.
to top it off, the Reds are paying $1.1 million of the $2 million owed to Womack. Brian Cashman must be laughing in glee to know the joy that is to get someone to take a bad contract from you.

12/8/05 Acquired LHP Dave Williams from the Pittsburgh Pirates for first baseman Sean Casey and cash.
well, for the Pirates, this is an awesome deal. for Reds fans, this is another kick in the crotch by Dan O'Brien. not only have the Reds acquired a guy with low upside, they acquired one that occasionally reachs 86 MPH on the gun.
Williams had to have surgery on his labrum in 2002, and was having shoulder problems last August and September. that certainly bodes well for the Reds.
Casey is what the Pirates need, a guy who gets on base in a lineup full of out magnets. not only do the Pirates have him under contract for one year, but Brad Eldred could really use an entire season in AAA.
on top of all this insanity, the Reds are kicking in $1.5 million to the Pirates. let's do some basic math here...Casey gets $8.1 million, and Williams gets $1.4 million. so $8.1-1.5-1.4=$5.2 millions in savings for the Reds. $1.1 million of that has been turned to pay for Tony Womack, so now we're down to $4.2 millon left on the Casey savings.
it's not that the Reds shouldn't have traded Casey, i've been on the trade Casey bandwagon since 2003. it's that the Reds could have gotten more for him. he was without a doubt, a slightly below average offensive 1B who wasn't worth his contract. but the things that we've constantly heard George Grande and Marty Brennamen drone on about are marketable to most teams: contact hitter, leadership, nice guy, 300 hitter. Casey's only the second player ever to his 310 or better and get traded. and he got traded for nothing. not just nothing, but for a #4 rotational starter who Dan O'Brien likes based on...based on...something i'm sure. i think these quote from Hal McCoy states it best:
"The Reds did want Perez, or top pitching prospects Zach Duke or Paul Maholm, but the Pirates wouldn't let go, and the Reds settled for Williams, a No. 4 or No. 5 rotation guy who had shoulder problems last September...
...The happiest guy is new Pittsburgh manager and Hamilton native Jim Tracy, happy that the Reds were unable to pry away the Pirates' best pitching prospects and even happier they acquired Casey."
and the Reds settled for Dan O'Brien.

well...he's 40...had a 3.84 ERA in Petco last year (4.18 on the road with a 1.69 HR/9). he's a groundball neutral pitcher with a declining K rate the last 3 years. he'll either perform about like Weathers did last year, or he'll implode. but he's a decent signing for the contract.

2. Jason LaRue is a good signing, one of the reasons the Reds' catchers were so good is the time each one had off. I think LaRue can improve on last season.
3. The signing of Freel provides a decent player at 2nd and a backup at 3rd if Edwin can't perform. I really think Freel will start and the battle for a starting spot will come down to Womack and Edwin.

i don't think you realize that the Reds FO thinks they're going to win this year. you don't acquire guys like Womack and Aurilia (i can't wait to hear Grande gush about them the first time they start at short and second) if you're in rebuild mode. they're guys you acquire to be the last piece of the puzzle...usually the bench strength aspect of that puzzle. and when has a guy in MLB ever actually had to serve jail time through the season?

the only confusing parts about this is he has a guarenteed spot and will spend all year on the DL with his guarenteed roster spot. he's a very good gamble though, very low risk with a very high reward. i don't understand the point of giving a one-year major league contract to a guy who will not even be able to pick up a ball until May though.

Veteran reliever Rick White has agreed to a one-year, $600,000 major league contract with the Reds. He also could earn up to $300,000 more in performance bonuses.
i think the logic is to try to get a middling out of White should he still have a deceptively good ERA at the deadline. i wouldn't be surprised in the least if Narron is insturcted (assuming Kullman's in charge) to only use White in low pressure and bottom of the order situations until June..and if that's the case it just seems like poor planning to me to pay a half-million for a dude who's not a very good pitcher, just to trade him later for a guy who's ceiling is 4/5 starter or primary reserve.

2-1-06 Cincinnati Reds Designated pitcher Bubba Nelson for assignment; named Mile LaCoss roving minor league pitching instructor.
hope Bubba clears waivers. kinda surprised he was DFAd as opposed to Sardinha or Simpson or Standrige. i also don't understand the fascisnation, and this goes for all teams, of bringing in bad pitcher's from your team's past to work with your guys in the spring and be roving instructors.

i'm surprised he cleared $2.5 million. great sign, especially considering Boras intially asked for $4 million. if Kullman or Krivsky or Mozeliak is selected as GM, i wouldn't be surprised if Lopez gets a LTC by season end.

2-9-06 Reds sign OF Timo Perez to a minor league contract, and hope to eventually invite him to spring training.
Krivsky's first roster move as GM. if he was like DanO, it would have taken 3 more weeks to get around to this. at any rate, assuming Perez is here to be the 5th OFer, this is a pretty good signing, but if he's being signed to compete with Denorfia as the 4th OFer, things will be bad.
as far as hoping to eventually invite him to Spring Training, Perez has a travelar's Visa right now, which means he's not allowed to play games where admission is charged (spring training). this almost the same BS that happened to Jose Acevedo 2 years ago.

2-9-06 Reds fire Asst. GM Brad Kullman.
kind of surprising, kind of not surprising. Kullman is one of the guys who formed to core of the old regime, and rumors float about that none of that core will be around by season's end except for possibly Leland Maddox and Johnny Almaraz. personally, i'm more than for Krivsky (who fired Kullman, not Castellini) firing everyone and putting in his own guys...especially in place of Dean Taylor, Tim Naehring, Terry Reynolds, and Rob Butcher (yes i know Butcher isn't on the baseball side).

2-10-06 Reds claim LHP Michael Gosling from the Arizona Diamondbacks, designate RHP Luke Hudson for assignment.
Gosling appears to have been the victim of rapid acceleration through the D-Backs system. an interesting note on him is that he was drafted in 1998 by the Twins, but didn't sign.
as far as Hudson goes, this was a long time coming...he should have been DFAd back in October for LHP Ryan Ketchner or LHP Derek Thompson from the Dodgers. i really don't understand where people were pulling the 'he has ace stuff' from with Hudson. if anything, i think it shows how horribly depleted of good pitching Reds fans are to where it seems they believe a guy who hits 94 on the gun has good stuff.

stealin' my thunder :p

Hatteberg could make up to an extra $400,000 based on plate appearances. this probably singles the end of Jacob Cruz on the 25-man roster. it's a nice lateral move, adds some legitmate roster flexability. Hatteberg had a 273/363/352 when not in the Coleseum. would have been interesting to see where the Reds would be right now if Castellini had taken control in November like he thought he would, and placed Krivsky in charge in December...at the very least you wouldn't have Aurilia and Womack.

I'm not sure if there is money tied to this deal like in the McCraken signing. Rhodes is decent power hitter. He is tied for most HRs in a single season in the Japanese League. Rhodes is a native of Cincinnati but he will probably not be in Cincinnati during the regular season.

as a whole, Browning isn't liked well enough around baseball to be a major league pitching coach, i mean, its taken him this long to be a spring training instructor. and then there's the entire we don't have any basis to think Browning would be a good pitching or a bad pitching coach for that matter. *shrug*

that's great. too bad they didn't do it with Jimmy Haynes when he came in nearly 40 pounds over weight in 04. as far as Hancock pitching goes, he's just another in the pile of mediocrity that is Reds' pitching.

yes, you read that right. a major league contract but going to Louisville. Hudson cleared waivers and accepted assignment to AAA, but according to the rules governing baseball, the Reds were required to give Hudson a major league deal to do it. all it really means is that Hudson will be making the major league minimum in AAA (which means he's one of the highest paid players in the minors).

Simpson was released to make room for Matt Kata on the 40-man roster. Hudson was released because he's a wilder and injured version of Simpson. i can't figure out why Southern League All-Star Bubba Nelson was released though. he had a sub 3 ERA, 3:1 K/BB rate, and 10+ K/9 rate until the final month of the season in AA last year.

unless they're sure Basham's shoulder is toast, i really don't see the point of trading for a no stick poor defensive catcher. even with it seeming that a trade of LaRue or Valentin is looming it doesn't make a lot of sense, so both Miguel Perez and Dane Sardinha are no stick outsanding defensive catchers.
