Hello White Sox fans, and welcome to the post season.
This thread will be used to discuss anything and everything related to October Baseball on 35th and Shields. We may discuss anything from playoff rosters to who you would like to play or anything involving the White sox in the playoffs.
I will start this thread with this question;
Assuming the White Sox carry 11 pitchers on the playoff roster, which pitcher gets left off the playoff roster? Is it Damaso Marte? Luis Vizcaino? Who do you think?
GoSox!
09-30-2005, 09:18 PM
I don't know about the pitching deal. The way Marte looked tonight it looked like he may be back in form, but the guy is just so inconsistent it's hard to be able to depend on him in pressure situations like the playoffs
Chisox73
10-01-2005, 06:04 PM
Now,assuming 11 pitchers go,that would mean an extra position player.I think it's a safe bet that Willie Harris makes the playoff roster because of his speed.
But between Ross Gload and Geoff Blum, which of these two gets left off?
GoSox!
10-01-2005, 08:30 PM
That's a tough one. With Gload's clutch hit the other day against the Tribe it kind of helps his case.
Here's head to head stats of each:
POS G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CSOBP SLG AVG
1. G Blum CWS 3B 31 95 6 19 2 1 1 3 26 4 15 0 1 .232 .274 .200
2. R Gload CWS1B 27 41 2 7 2 0 0 5 9 2 8 0 0 .209 .220 .171
Looking at these numbers it looks like Ross would get the nod. He has about half as many hits in half as many games as Blum and he has a couple more RBI's in those at-bats. Other than that their stats are almost identical.
Since we have Crede and Ozuna being able to play third in the playoffs I would most likely leave Blum off the roster. In case anything happened to Paulie I would take Gload to the playoffs because he's our only first baseman besides Jermaine Dye who's very inexperienced at that position.
Chisox73
10-01-2005, 08:36 PM
That makes perfect sense there.I would have to leave Blum off the roster myself if it were up to me.

Yes. This is going to be a great series and a very exciting and nerve racking one to say the least. It'll be a great pitching staff against a great hitting staff, and we all know.....pitching and defense win in the playoffs.

Nope, confirmed. El Duque and Vizcaino are in, McCarthy is out. Geoff Blum and Willie Harris are in, Ross Gload is out.
Marte is of course in. You need 2 lefties in the pen.

Are you serious? I'd take McCarthy over Viz any day of the week! He's got the freshest arm on the team and he's just a helluva lot better. I guess his inexperience is what did him in, which really is unfair IMO.
I also would've really liked to have seen Gload instead of Blum. Like I said Ross is the only Paulie backup we have and Blum is our 3rd string 3rd baseman. Ross is more clutch, IMO we just need Ross alot more than Blum.

To answer the questions here.Ozzie Guillen made out the playoff rosters, and was realeased this orning.
I was just as surprised, and disappointed as most of the Sox fans that McCarthy was left off the roster.I would have preferred Vizcaino to have been left off and McCarthy put on.I'm very comfortable with Marte pitching to only 1 or 2 batters if necessary.
McCarthy would have given us 2 solid men in long relief to get us to Cotts and Politte. The reasoning for McCarthy being left off the roster was that he threw 102 pitches in Cleveland yesterday, while El Duque was very solid in relief.
As for Gload/Blum,that was a togh one to call.Blum can fill in at all the INF positions if needed, although his bat is a liability(3 RBIs in 40 games while hitting .200),I really don't see him getting much playing time.
Willie Harris deserved to be on the roster. His speed and defense could be invaluable to the team.
As for changes made to the playoff roster, you can make changes to the rostar prior to the next round,or unless there's an injury.

In thier first post season appearance since 2000,the White Sox electrified the crowd at US Cellular Field by clubbing an ALDS record 5 home runs en route to a 14-2 thrashing of the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox this afternoon.
The White Sox struck in the 1st when after leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik and later on Jermaine Dye was hit by pitches,Podsednik stole 3rd,and Paul Konerko broughtn him in on a groundout to 3B Bill Mueller to make it 1-0 Chisox.
Later in the inning,Aaron Rowand singled home Konerko for a 2-0 lead. Then the next batter AJ Pierzynski hit an opposite field blast off Red Sox starter Matt Clement to give the White Sox a 5-0 1st inning lead.
In the 3rd inning,Konerko hit the 2nd homer of the game for Chicago with a laser into the left field bullpen, making it a 6-0 game.
In the 4th inning,a couple of defensive miscues by the Sox led to 2 Boston runs. With Kevin millar at-bat,and runners on 2nd and 3rd,White Sox starter Jose Conteeras uncorked a wild pitch scoring Trot Nixon for Boston's 1st run, cutting the lead to 6-1.
Just a couple of, pitches later,Millar doubled scoring Jason Varitek to make it 6-2 Chicago.
But the White Sox would answer back in the bottom of the inning when Juan Uribe unloaded on Clemenat for a 2-run blast, scoring Pierzynski to make it an 8-2 White Sox lead.
But the Sox weren't done just yet.In the 6th,Uribe would drive home Aaron Rowand with an RBI single off reliever Jeremi Gonzalez to make it 9-2.Then came the big blow of the game.Scott Podsednik hit a 3-run homer into the right field sets, his 1st homer in a White Sox uniform,to officially make it a blowout at 12-2.
They would add 2 more in the 8th inning when AJ Pierzynski cranked out his 2nd homer of the game, setting an ALDS record for most homers hit by 1 team in a game, making it 13-2.Then later on,Willie Harris,pinch-hitting for Tadahito Iguchi, singled home Joe Crede for the 14-2 score.
September pitcher of the Month Jose Contreras(1-0) was spectacular in his 7 2/3 innings work, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, walking no one and striking out 6 for the win, while keeping Ortiz and Ramirez in check for most of the game.
Matt Clement(0-1) took the loss for the Carmines,going only 3 1/3 innings,allowing 8 runs on 7 hits.
Manny was hitless in 4 at-bats today, while Big Papi was 2-4 in the game with a double.
For the Sox,Podsednik was 2-3 with a stolen base,a 3-run homer,and 2 runs scored.Pierzynski was 3-3 with 2 homers,4 RBIs,and 4 runs scored.Juan Uribe was 2-4 with 3RBIs and 2 runs scored.Paul Konerko was 1-4 with a homer,2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

Tadahito Iguchi's go-ahead 3-run homer capping a 5-run 5th inning propelled the White Sox to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox to take a 2 games to none lead in thier Best-fo-5 American League Division Series in frony of a raucous crowd of 40,799 at US Cellular Field Wednesday night.
The start of the game wasn't too promising as far as Chicago was concerned.Starter Mark Buehrle was shaky at times early. He gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning. It started when Johnny Damon led off the game with a sinlge past 3B Joe Crede to lead off the game.Edgar Renteria followed with a double. After David Ortiz struck out,Manny Ramirez picked up the slack wih a single scoring both Damon and Renteria for a quick 2-0 Red Sox lead.
The Carmines added 2 more in the 4th inning on an RBI single by Jason Varitek, scoring Damon. Then Trot Nixon would hit into a force out, scoring Ortiz. The Red Sox stranded Ramirez on 3rd in that inning.
Meanwhile,Boston starter David Wells was in full cruise control, having thrown only 28 pitches through 3 innings.
But in the 5th inning, things began to unravel for Boston. After Carl Everett led off with a hit,Aaron Rowand placed a double just inches inside the left field foulf line to score Everett and the Sox were finally on the board.
After AJ Pierzynski grounded out to 2nd,advancing Rowand to 3rd,the next batter Joe Crede singled home Rowand to cut the deficit to 4-2.The very next batter,Juan Uribe then hit a grounder to 2nd baseman Tony Graffanino that went right through the wickets, and the White sox had runners at the corners with 1 out.
Then after Scott Podsednik fouled out,Tadahito Iguchi delivered the big blow of the game whenn he drilled a David Wells curve ball over the left field fence for a 3-run homer, giving Chicago a 5-4 lead.
Bobby Jenks came in to pitch the final 2 innings and was clutch for his 1st post season save.Mark Buehrle went 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits for the win.
David Wells went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs,2 earned on 7 hits for the loss.

HOME COOKING; This marks the 1st time since the 1917 World Series that the Sox have won 2 straight home post-season games.
Carl Everett and Tadahito Iguchi each had 2 hits for the Sox in the game.
Chicago has outhomered Boston 6-0 in the first 2 games of the series. They now have 19 post-season homers in franchise history.
The White Sox became only the 3rd team in AL Division Series history to come back from a 4-run deficit. They join the 1997 Yankees(8-6 over Cleveland) and the 2004 Yankees(6-5 in 11 innings over Minnesota) as the only teams to do it.

Last night was probably one of the most enjoyable nights that I ever spent on the South Side.1st of all, this was my 1st post-season game that I have ever attended. And everything had that post-season atmosphere to it,from the traffic 2 1/2 hours before the game,to the million different beanbag toss games going on in the parking lots,to the smell of brats and beer.
The atmosphere was electric all night at the park, even when the Sox were down early in the game. There was something in the air that was telling us that it was going to be special.
I had seats in the upper deck,5 rows from the top, just behind home playte. The view was spectacular.Even the planes coming in to land at Midway strayed very close to the park all night for a glimpse of Chicago baseball history in the making.
By the 5th inning,I was stuffed already. An Italian beef sandwich before the game, and a couple of brats in the 4th inning really hit the spot.
I made my way down to Fundamentals in left field in the 5th inning, just in time for the Sox to make thier comeback.I watched the rest of the game from the left field area. The crowd came to life when the Sox scored thier 1st run in that 5-run 5th,and it just got louder when that ball went through Graffanino's legs.
Then When Gooch(Tadahito Iguchi) connected off Shrek(David Wells),the place went up for grabs, total strangers began hi-fiving each other,Chicago's finest was hi-fiving fans, ushers were hi-fiving fans,it was incredible.
The craziest moment came in the 7th when Terry Francona took Wells out of the game. The 40,000+ in the ballpark gave Wells a standing boo.:laugh Then organist Nancy Faust began to properly serenade Wells with' Na Na,Hey,Hey,Good-bye'.I've never heard that song sung so loudly ever.
Then when the bullpen door opened in the 8th inning and Bobby Jenks came out, another huge roar went up from thre crowd.Jenks has very quickly become a fan favorite on the South Side.
When the last out was finally recorded, the whole place erupted with uncontrollable joy.Granted we haven't won anything yet, this was definately a moment to savor. It may one of those moments whre you say to yourself,"This is our year!"

WHITE SOX SWEEP INTO ALCS!!!!!!
The Chicago White Sox took a huge step in thier post season as they swept the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox in 3 games of the 2005 AL Division Series with a 5-3 win at Fenway Park.
This marks the 1st time since winning the 1917 World Series that the South Siders had won a playoff series. It also marked the 1st time in franchise history that they have swept a playoff series.
The White Sox jumped out in the board in the 3rd inning on back-to-back doubles by Juan Uribe and Scott Podsednik to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead.Tadahito Iguchi would then single up the middle to score Podsednik for the game's second run.
The lead was short-lived however when in the 4th inning, boston's 2-headed monster aka David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez hit back-to-back solo homers off Sox starter Freddy Garcia to tie the game at 2.
The Pale Hose answrered back in the 6th inning when after Jermaine dye led off with a walk, the next batter Paul Konerko launched a 1-1 offering from Tim Wakefield well over the Green monster to give the White Sox a 4-2 lead.
But things got real dicey in the bottom of the 6th when Manny led off the bottom of the frame with his 2nd solo shot of the game to close the gap to 4-3.
Damaso marte cmae in to relieve Gatrcia, and it looked like things would get a lot worse.Trot Nixon singled off Marte with 0 out, then he walked Bill mueller and John Olerud to load the bases. Then Ozzie Guillen yanked Marte for Orlando Hernandez.
El Duque the proceded to retire PH Jason Varitek on a pop out to Konerko on an infield fly rule. Then Tony Graffanino flied out to Juan Uribe on an infield fly rule, and then Johnny Damon was called out on a check swing strike.El Duque pitched probably the most clutch inning as a White Sox at this point.
The Sox would add an insurance run in the 9th when after AJ Pierzynski doubled,he was moved over to 3rd on a sac bunt by Aaron Rowand, then the next batter Juan Uribe layed down a perfect squeeze scoring Pierzynski while Uribe beat the throw to 1st.That would be all the Sox would need as closer Bobby Jenks worked a 1-2-3 9th inning to nail down the historic win for the Sox.

Notes: Marte Remains on ALCS Roster
Despite struggles, reliever offers lefty option
By Scott Merkin / MLB.com
Damaso Marte met with Ozzie Guillen on Sunday about his status for the ALCS. (John Miller/AP)
CHICAGO -- Ozzie Guillen met with Damaso Marte on Sunday before deciding to keep the much maligned reliever as part of the White Sox playoff roster for the American League Championship Series, a move he wasn't quite convinced of making after completing the series sweep of Boston.
Marte assured Guillen that he felt fine physically, even after giving up a single and two walks during his lone inning of work Friday in the now famous sixth inning at Fenway Park. Guillen, in turn, pointedly told the left-hander that he can't pitch as if he's afraid of failure.
"I say to him, 'I don't care if you blow the game, let the team down, I really don't care what the fans and media think about you,'" Guillen said of his talk with Marte. "'Just make sure that you throw everything away when I put you there, give the best effort and if you fail, be ready for the next day.'
"'There's always going to be a next day. If I see you the next day after a game, and I see you with your head down, worry about it because that bothers me.'"
Guillen singled out Marte as the only player on his 25-man roster who truly worried him heading into the ALCS. But it made better sense to have a second lefty in the bullpen, joining Neal Cotts, in order to keep Angels manager Mike Scioscia or Yankees manager Joe Torre honest in the decision-making process.
It's also easier to go with a pitcher who has worked in relief his entire career, instead of a young starter, such as Brandon McCarthy, temporarily pitching out of the bullpen. Both McCarthy and Marte threw simulated games on Sunday, along with reliever Luis Vizcaino, who didn't pitch in the Division Series.
McCarthy was unaware of the decision when speaking to the media before the team's Sunday workout. But much like his attitude prior to the start of the playoffs, he was ready for any possible outcome and seemed to be making the best of the time off.
"The rest is good, especially since I'm about 10 innings past my career high, and this is definitely a longer season than I'm used to," McCarthy said. "So any rest you can get for your body and, taking the wear and tear of pitching, every day off should help you feel a little better.
"You start to feel little aches and pains you've never felt before. It's normal but you have to condition yourself to get through it."
Pitching coach Don Cooper explained that Marte continues to throw his fastball with confidence, but the same can't be said for his breaking ball. He's also shaking off catcher A.J. Pierzynski far too often.
So, the plan Sunday was to simplify things for Marte and get him back ready for action.
"He seems like he's thinking long and he's thinking wrong," said Cooper of Marte. "Simply give us the best you can give us on whatever we put down and just try to execute one pitch at a time.
"You know what, I still believe in him. He's given us way too many great outings over the last three years for me to jump off his boat. We're not going to do it. I'm not going to do it."
Hurry up and wait: Talk in the White Sox clubhouse Sunday wasn't so much about who they will face in the ALCS but when will it start. If the current Division Series returns to Anaheim for a deciding fifth game Monday night, the White Sox understood that the ALCS could start Wednesday instead of Tuesday.
The South Siders also are dealing with at least three days off, after dominating the defending World Series champions in the opening playoff series. So, they sit patiently, with their eight-game winning streak, believing the time off only can be beneficial.
"We are going to do all the stuff during the workouts to keep us in shape," said White Sox center fielder Aaron Rowand.
"It gives our pitchers a rest, a much-needed rest at the end of the season," third baseman Joe Crede added. "Nobody has any problems getting back out there and into the groove of things."
Pierzynski pointed out that the hitters would be more likely to suffer, after getting into a pretty good rhythm during the Boston series. But that hitting stroke should come back quickly.
The White Sox catcher didn't put much stock in the fact that the Angels or Yankees would suffer, if there was a Game 5 on Monday, aside from not being able to set their rotation for the ALCS.
"They are veteran teams and know how to handle it," Pierzynski said. "It would be different if we were playing Tuesday at 1 p.m. It won't affect them that much."
Ready for anything: Marte's struggles, both with location and his psyche, has pushed Cotts into the left-handed setup role. In just his second full season as a reliever at any professional level, the 25-year-old believes the pressure won't change for him in moving from the sixth and seventh innings to the eighth and ninth.
"It's not a difference with this team," said Cotts with a smile. "You need to keep it close whenever you come into the game, even in the fifth, because we play so many tight games.
"This is going to be a challenge, but I'm up for it," Cotts added.
Cotts actually has held right-handed hitters to a .155 average and left-handers to a .205 mark. Those numbers are even more beneficial to Guillen with the balance of the respective Angels and Yankees lineups.
Long and winding road: Sunday's workout was originally scheduled to start at 10 a.m. CT but was moved back to 11 a.m. because of numerous exit closures and heavy traffic caused by the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.
First baseman Paul Konerko lamented that his 20-minute drive from home to U.S. Cellular took somewhere around two hours because of the road race. Exits at 31st street and 35th street were closed near the ballpark because the marathon route went through that particular area.
Let's hear it for the boys: The city of Chicago is so giddy with White Sox success that Rowand announced the unthinkable on Sunday -- even Cubs fans are coming up and wishing him well. Guillen, for one, doesn't mind any North Side bandwagon jumpers.
"I know the rivalry, but let's be realistic. It's one city," Guillen said. "On our chest, it says Chicago. It doesn't say 35th and Shields. Let's worry about what's on our chests.
"The fans shouldn't take it wrong, but Cubs fans should be rooting for us. They all should feel proud of this team."

Please. Yes, I am a Yankee fan. Yes, the Angels are a thorn in our side. And yes, you guys are the better team this year. I am a life long Bombers fan and wanted a Yankees 27th championship more than anything. Yankee fans will kill me for saying it, but I've been saying it all along. The White Sox are a better team. You have been all year and if we had met in the ALCS it would have been close. Go SOX!!! (The White Ones)

So please, take care of this punk-b*tch lineup from LA. Our A-rod may be the mvp of the season while killing us in the ALDS, but their K-rod is an arrogant child. Please put their gay-rod away by handing him a blown save.
I haven't heard such an example of sore losership in a long time. Apparently it's still alive in Yankee Nation. "Punk-b*tch lineup?" "Arrogant child?"
Obviously you know nothing of what you're talking about. If you've ever head ANY of the Angels interviewed you've heard nothing but humility and class, and respect for their opponents. Traits you apparently lack.
Good luck, White Sox fans. This is gonna be a fun series.

I agree. I read it this morning and had no clue how to respond to it. I still don't. I might just go in and delete that line, or move to the "Please Read" thread that '73 made. That actually sounds good.
Not to take away any credit from Anaheim, who played heads-up ball in the first game of the ALCS last night, but the ChiSox contributed to their own defeat. As I saw it, these were the critical plays:
1) Crede's failure to get the ball out of his glove and throw home on Cabrera's hit to him in the third inning.
2) On the following play, Contreras' failure to throw home on Guerrero's grounder back to him, thereby letting Finley score. OUCH! That play cost Contreras the game. Always take the sure out!
3) Podsednik caught stealing second in the fifth. Podsednik was successful on 44 of 53 attempts before the All-Star break. After the break, he is 15 of 29. Sabermetrics analysis recommends against stealing unless the probability of a safe steal is 60-70 % or more. Maybe Podsednick should quit stealing attempts for the rest of the playoffs.
4) Jermaine Dye's ill-advised and ill-executed bunt attempt in the sixth inning. (It was his decision, not Guillen's.)
5) Pierzynski caught stealing second in the seventh. He claims he saw a hit & run sign put on.
6 & 7) Podsednik and Aaron Rowand's failures to get down bunts in the seventh and eighth innings, after the lead-off man got on with none out.
8) Pierzynski's double clutch trow to second on Figgins' steal attempt in the eighth. (Luckily, that play did not cost them any runs.)
The Sox must do more then just "throw their gloves on the field" to beat the Angels. They played "dumb ball" last night.

I'll second that. I expected Anaheim to win last night, with the Sox winning out. My reasoning, Anaheim would be revved up to play without getting sleep, while the Sox would be a little rusty. But, the overused bullpen because of, and along with, Colon's series ending injury would spell disaster for the well rested and healthy Sox. So far, I'm right, and hope to be until the end, as well.

All I can say is that Byrd was not that good...what's up with the bats? Is it as you were saying, just a bit of rust? I hope so!

Same deal for the White Sox. Face it, neither team is a dominating force to be reckoned with. The team that makes the fewer mistakes will win this thing. So, for now it's Angels - 1, Sox - 0.

The jet-lagged Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem took advantage of White Sox mental miscues en route to a 3-2 win in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series Tuesday night at Chicago's US Cellular Field.
Angels pitcher Paul Byrd was the winner with Jose Contreras getting the loss.Francisco Rodriguez picked up the save for the Angels.Contreras is now 1-1 in the post season.
The Halos got on the board when Garret Anderson hit a solo homer off Contreras in the 2nd inning. They added 2 more in the 3rd inning on a couple of miscues by the White Sox defense.
Joe Crede got the Sox on the board in the 3rd with a solo homer, his 1st post-season homer to make it a 3-1 Angels lead.
AJ Pierzynski made it a 3-2 game with a fielder's choice in the 4th inning, scoring Carl Everett.
But the story of this game was missed opportunities by the Sox.The inability to move runners over and failing to get them in was the difference in the game.

Joe Crede's line shot double into the right field corner brought home pinch-runner Pablo Ozuna with the winning run as the White Sox took Game 2 of the 2005 ALCS 2-1,knotting up the series at 1 game apiece.
With 2 out in the bottom of the 9th,AJ Pierzynski was called out on strikes, but then he alertly raced to 1st base, sensing that the ball was not caught cleanly by Angles catcher Josh Paul. The umps ruled Paul didn't catch it cleanly, and Pierzynski was on 1st.He was replaced by PR Ozuna,as he scored on Crede's drive off losing pitcher Kelvim Escobar(0-1).
The Sox got on the board in the 1st inning when Scott Podsednik reached on a 2-base error by Angels pitcher Jarrod Washburn.Tadahito Iguchi sacrificed Podsednik to 3rd,where he scored on a groundout by Jermaine Dye to make it a 1-0 game.
The Sox had a chance for more in the 2nd when Aaron Rowand doubled to right, then after Vladimir Guerrero bobbled the ball,he overthrew the cutoff man, allowing Rowand to reach 3rd,as the ball got away from the 1st cutoff man,the ball strayed down the 3rd base line, and Rowand was on his way home, but was thrown out at the plate.
LA tied the game in the 5th inning when Robb Quinlan hit a solo homer off starter Mark Buehrle(1-0).
Buehrle went the distance in the win, allowing a run on 5 hits, striking out 4,while throwing only 99 pitches.
Angels starter Jarrod washburn pitched very valiantly, despite being weakend by the strep throat and flu-like symptoms that forced him to miss the ALDS.Washburn went 4 2/3 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1.
Joe Crede went 2-4 with a double in the game.He was the only Sox to have 2 hits.

I missed the Rowand dash, and I didn't see any clear evidence that Molina tagged him before Rowand touched home on the replay.
For the controversy, here's my take
When it happened, I thought Paul caught and then dropped it and was yelling to A.J. to hurry up to first. I never thought the home-ump was calling out, but simply calling the swing and miss. On the front zoom-up replays, it looks to me like the ball bounced just before it hit Paul's glove, and then he dropped it. To me, there is clear evidence from this angle that the ball hit the ground. However, from the side views, it looks like it couldn't have it the ground because Paul's glove underside was in the way. But, Paul stabbed towards the ground, slightly, but still "picked" the ground. If the ball was in his glove, why would he need to stab the ground, with the tube of his glove touching the ground? There is nothing underneath the glove at this point, and it is up to us to determine if the ball was held by friction inside the glove or the ground. I agree with the head of umpire review or whatever his title is when he says the evidence is inconclusive at best. Also, if the ump did call out, what would make A.J. run to first like that? He barely crossed the plate before starting running. BTW, just to add possibly more controversy, I'm not convinced A.J. didn't touch home as he re-crossed on his way to first. There's an automatic out right there. It's still true that you're taught to tag the batter an any close play, whether you caught it or not, to remove any possibility of the ump blowing the call (unless he's on the take, that is:D ) All Paul had to do was tag A.J. or throw to first instead of roll it towards the mound and this would be a mute point.

Do you really think a professional ballplayer who HADN'T caught the ball cleanly wouldn't have simply tagged the runner who had begun to move toward his dugout? Obviously, Paul knew it was caught cleanly. How the umpires missed it we will never know.

Umm...Yes. Some think they caught it apprently. Some just assume no-one will notice, and you know what happens when you assume. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, BEFORE A.J. started to first, I thought the ball hit the ground. It doesn't suprise me that the call stood. When the ball looks like it hits the ground and then goes backwards into the glove, you're expecting decisive clean? (And that ball did hit something and go back, it's just a matter of wether Paul's glove was underneath it or not.) I really don't see why you have a problem with a catcher tagging the batter to remove all doubt. Almost every situation like that, the catcher tags the batter or throws to first, even when the ball is caught cleanly. I can't figure out your problem with doing something your taught in Little League. Heck, I see Little Leaguers do it all the time. BTW, I also don't expect to see anyone catch a ball with one out and throw it into the seats, but it happens. I dont expect to see runners go on contact on a pop-up with one out, but it happens. I don't expect to see balks, but they happen. I don't expect to see the pitcher walk hor hit home the walk-off winning run, but it happens. I didn't expect to see Escobar serve one up to Crede to end the game, but he did. Do you want me to continue? Errors in judgement occur by humans. Paul made one, maybe the six umpires made one, but again, Paul could have made it impossible for them to. His failure in doing so was his error in judgement.

Pretty cocky for a team whose bullpen has pitched the majority of innings the last three days, who doesn't have their guy who can save it, and whose pitchers are sick, compared to a team who has all the weapons they've had all year available and fresh. You could be right, but you've (I believe you) also said you hope your team can limp into the WS. Not exactly a confidence builder if I was you. No disrespect, I just think you're not looking objectively enough. You've got a good team, and going into the final week of the season, I thought we'd get swept by you in the first round. You are the team that I least wanted to face in the AL because you are the team that has the best chance to beat us. Going in to the playoffs, I thought it was too close to call. We were identical. However, things change and you are not 100% now. If we were both playing at the same strength, I could definetly see your scenario. We are not. BTW, I also think Vlad deserves the MVP again, but Colon might have been the MVP of this series. Does anyone else support me for Vlad for MVP down there?

Jon Garland turned in by far,his most clutch performance of his career with a complete game 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium.
Garland, who had not pitched since October 1st at Cleveland was sharp all night for his 1st career post-season victory. He scattered 4 hits in the game, walking 1 and striking out 7,throwing 118 pitches. His only mistake was giving up a 2-run homer to Orlando Cabrera in the 6th inning.
The Sox struck in the 1st inning with 3 runs, starting off with a 1-out RBI double by Jermaine Dye,scoring Scott Podsednik. The next batter,Paul Konerko, launched a 2-run blast into the left field seats to make it 3-0.
They made it 4-0 in the 3rd on a Carl Everett RBI single. They tacked on another in the 5th on an RBI single by Konerko.
Angles starter John Lackey took the loss going 5 innings, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits.
For the Sox,Konerko was 3-4 with 3 RBIs,Tadahito Iguchi was 2-4 with 2 runs scored, and Scott Podsednik was 2-5 with a double and a run scored.

White Sox One Step Closer!!!!
Freddy Garcia became the 3rd straight Sox pitcher to go the distance as the White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-2 in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.
The White Sox now take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead in this best-of-7 series with a chance to seal thier 1st pennant in 46 years tomorrow night.
Garcia went the distance, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 1 and striking out 5 in the game. The 3rd straight complete game is the 1st in ALCS history, and the 2nd in LCS history. The 1973 NY Mets of Tom Seaver,Jon Matlack, and Jery Koosman turned the trick against Cincinnati.
Just like last night, the Sox got on the board in the 1st inning.Scott Podsednik walked to lead off the game, then Tadahito Iguchi was hit by a pitch by Halos starter Ervin Santana.
And just like last night, with 1 out,Paul Konerko blasted a 3-run shot over the left field wall to give the Sox a quick 3-0 lead.
The Angels would score in the bottom of the 2nd on a Bengie Molina single, scoring Darin Erstad. But later in the inning, another controversial play went against the Angels, when with runners at the corners and 1 out,Steve Finley grouned into a double play to end the inning. But Finley's bat had made contact with the glove of catcher AJ Pierzynski, but no call was made, and the DP stood, killing an Angels threat, even though the TV replays showed that there clearly was catcher's interference.
Carl Everett singled home Jermaine Dye in the 3rd inning to make it a 4-1 Sox lead. The next inning,Pierzynski hit a solo bomb into the center field hitters backdrop off Santana for a 5-1 lead.
The Angels would close the gap to 5-2 in the 4th inning when Casey Kotchman doubled home Garret Anderson. This would be as close as the Halos would get.
Everett added another RBI single in the 5th inning scoring Podsednik, and Joe Crede lined a 2-run double in the 8th scoring Everett and Aaron Rowand to complete the scoring.
Scott Podsednik was 1-2 with a triple,3 walks and 2 stolen bases.Carl Everett was 2-3 with a walk and 2 RBIS,Konerko was 1-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs.Joe Crede was 2-4 with a 2-run double.

WHITE SOX WIN THE PENNANT!!!!!!!!!
The Basebal Gods are smiling upon Chicago tonight as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 6-3 to capture thier 1st American League Pennant since 1959.
With the Sox down 3-2,Joe Crede tied the game in the 7th inning when he hit a solo home run off Angels reliever Kelvim Escobar.
They went ahead for good in the 8th inning when Crede score AJ Pierzynski on an infield hit.Pierzynski was the beneficiary of another controversial play earlier in the inning, when he was ruled safe when Escobr failed to tag Pierzynski with the ball.He had tagged him with the glove on a slow roller with 2 out. That eventually opened things up for the Sox and Crede.
They sealed it in the 9th when ALCS MVP Paul Konerko doubled off the RF wall scoring Tadahtio Iguchi, and later in the inning,Aaron rowand flied into an odd sac fly double play, scoring Jermaine Dye.
Crede was the big hero in the game, goiong 2-3 with a sac fly,HR and 3 RBIs.He hit .368 in the series, leading all White Sox hitters.
Jose Contreras went the distance for the Sox,as the Sox become the 1st team in LCS history to have 4 straight complete games. It was also the 1st Sox team to do this since August,1974(Wilber wood twice,Jim Kaat, and Bart Johnson).
Contreras gave up 3 runs, all earned on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2 for the win.
Paul Byrd started for the Halos,he went 4 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits.Kelvim Escobar was tagged for the loss, while Angels closer Francisco rodriguez struggled in his outing, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 3 in 1 1/3 innings.

Wow. What an amazing team you guys have. You beat our guys in every aspect of the game. Pitching, defense, hitting, baserunning.
Congratulations. The best team won.
When the Angels had their run in '02 they beat NY 3 games to 1, Minn. 4 games to 1, and then the Giants 4 games to 3. We fans felt like no one was gonna stop us. That's the way it feels watching the White Sox play this year.
Good luck in the World Series. Enjoy it. I would be shocked if you didn't take down whoever the NL is represented by. Good luck!

Obviously, we don't have a crystal ball. No one KNOWS who is gonna win. I don't KNOW the Angels are gonna win 3 of the next 4. I just FEEL it. This AJ/Eddings fiasco, in my humble opinion, will fuel them like nothing else. Our guys have been playing with "guts 'n' heart" up till now. I believe you will see a new Angels team tonight, one playing with "fire."
Angels in six. (The Rally Monkey told me, by the way.):gt :clapping :dance :laugh
I didn't have a crystal ball, but still...

Sox Take Game 1
The White Sox used a good mix of pitching, defense, and timely hitting as they defeated the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the 2005 World Series 5-3 at US Cellular Field.
Jose Contreras was the winner, going 7+ innings. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, striking out 2 batters while throwing only 82 pitches.Neal Cotts worked 2/3 of an inning striking out both batters he faced before giving way to closer Bobby Jenks.Jenks struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced for the save.
The Sox jumped on the board in the 1st inning off Astros starter Roger Clemens when Jermaine Dye took him deep to the left field seats for a 1-0 lead.
Houston tied it in the 2nd when Mike Lamb hit a solo homer to center field off Contreras.
The Sox got to Clemens in the 2nd when they scored 2 runs.Aftger Carl Everett singled to start the inning,Aaron Rowand singled sending Everett to 3rd with 0 out.AJ Pierzynski grounded into a force to 1st baseman Mike Lamb, who forced Rowand at 2nd,at that time,Dye broke for home and scored uncontested. Then later,Juan Uribe doubled home Pierzynski to make it a 3-1 game.
In the 3rd,with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out,Lance Berkman doubled to right field scoring Adam Everett and Craig Biggio to make it a 3-3 game.
The Sox took the lead for good in the 4th inning on Joe Crede's solo home run of Wandy Rodriguez.
Rodriguez relieved Clemens to start the 3rd inning after Clemens left due to a strained hamstring.Clemens went 2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in his abbreviated outing.
Both teams had scoring chances throughout the game. The 'Stros had a golden chance in the 6th when willie Tavares led off with a double,he advanced to 3rd on a groundout by Berkman, then morgan Ensberg lined a shot that Joe Crede snared and threw to Paul Konerko for the 2nd out.Mike Lamb then grounded out to end the 6th.
In the 7th,Contreras hit 2 of the first 3 batters he faced, tying a World Series record. But Houston failed to score in that inning.
In the 8th,Taveras doubled off Contreras for the 2nd time in as many at-bats.But Ozzie decided to go to the pen for the 1st time in 12 days.Neal Cotts came in and gave up a single to Berkman, then struck out Ensberg and Lamb before giving way to Bobby Jenks, who then struck out Jeff Bagwell with some serious heat to end the 8th.
The Sox added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame when aftger AJ Pierzynski singled off reliever Russ Springer. Then after Crede and Uribe both flied out,Pierzynski stole 2nd and Scott Podsednik tripled into the right-center field gap to make it 5-3.
Jenks retired the Astros in order in the 9th for the save.

Great finish to a great game last night.
Congrats to the Sox...hope they win it all!
Chicago is obviously in the best position to be after 2 games of the WS. Assuming they go on to win the series, is this the beginning of the end? The media is already reporting that Konerko's father has said that Chicago missed their chance with him because they had all year to make a deal and they didin't, and now he deserves to get all that's due to him. Is this team due to dismantle like many of the recent WS winners?

GREAT SCOTT!!! WHAT A FINISH!!
Scott Podsednik placed his name next to Carlton Fisk,Kirk Gibson,Bill Mazeroski, and Joe Carter as his game-winning homer in the 9th inning sent the White Sox to Houston with a 7-6 win,and more importantly,a 2 games to 0 lead in the 2005 World Series.
Podsednik's blast came off Astros closer Brad Lidge with 1 out in the 9th inning. It was his 2nd post-season homer after going the entire regular season without one.
The Astros got on the board in the 2nd inning on Morgan Ensberg's solo homer off Mark Buehrle.
The Sox got 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI single by Joe crede, and a short fly ball by Juan Uribe, scoring AJ Pierzynski.
Houston tied the game in the 3rd inning when after Willie Tavares tripled,Lance Berkman's sac fly to center scored Tavares to tie the game at 2.
Buehrle got himself into trouble in the 5th inning, when Brad Ausmus led of with a double just past Joe Crede. With 2 out,Tavares got aboard with a single putting Ausmus on 3rd.Then Berkman followed up with a double into the left field corner scoring both runners and giving the Astros a 4-2 lead.
But the Sox got things going in the bottom of the 7th inning. With Dan Wheeler relieving starter Andy Pettitte,Juan Uribe hit a 1 out double, then after Podsednik struck out,Tadahito Iguchi walked, then with Jermaine Dye at-bat with the count 3-2,Wheeler's pitch was up and in,and glanced off Dye's bat,but HP umpire Jeff Nelson ruled that Dye was hit by a pitch, even though TV replays showed the ball clearly hitting the bat.
The bases were now loaded for Paul Konerko.Chad Quallscame in for Wheeler and on the 1st pitch fropm Qualls,Konerko blasted a grand slam giving the Sox a 6-4 lead.
In the 9th inning,Bobby Jenks came in to close the game.Future HOFer Jeff Bagwell led off with a single to left, then after Jason Lane struck out,Chris Burke walked. After Ausmus grounded out, advancing both runners,PH Jose Vizcaino lined a single into left field scoring Bagwell and Burke to tie the game at 6.
In the bottom of the 9th,Lidge came in to pitch for the 1st time since Game 5 of the NLCS when he gave up Albert Pujols' mammoth home run. After Juan Uribe flied out to deep center field,Podsednik drove a 2-1 pitch over the left center field wall for a White Sox Winner!!!
Neal Cotts(1-0) got the win in relief, coming in for Jenks after Vizcaino's game tying hit.Lidge(0-1) was tagged for, the loss.

White Sox on the Brink!
In the longest game in World Series history,Geoff Blum homered in the top of the 14th inning to help lead the White Sox to a 7-5 win over the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. The game took a record 5 hours,41 minutes to complete.
It was the 1st world Series game ever playewd in the State of Texas.
The real story of the game was Houston's inability to score in the late innings,of the 15 runners left stranded by the Astros,8 of those were from the 8th inning on.They also had only 1 hit after the 4th inning.
At the outset,it looked like the Stros would have thier way with starter Jon Garland.Lance Berkman got the scoring started in the 1st inning when he singled home Craig Biggio for a quick 1-0 lead.
They made it 3-0 in the 3rd inning on RBI singles by Biggio and Morgan Ensberg.Jason Lane made it 4-0 with a solo homer in the 4th.
But for red-hot Astros starter Roy Oswalt, his seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead disappeared in the 5th inning.
Joe Crede led off the 5th with a solo homer, his 2nd blast of the series to cut Houston's lead to 4-1.After singles by Juan Uribe and Scott Podsednik,Tadahito Iguchi singled home Uribe to make it 4-2 Astros.Jermaine Dye cut the lead to 4-3 with a single scoring Podsednik. Then with 2 out,AJ Pierzynski drove a 1-0 pitch deep into the right center field gap scoring both Iguchi and Dye giving the Sox thier 1st lead of the game at 5-4.
The Astros would tie the game in the 8th inning, when with Morgan Ensberg on 2nd,and Mike Lamb on 1st,Jason Lane doubled past Crede at 3rd to score Ensberg.
With Orlando Hernandez pitching in the 9th inning,he got himself into trouble, eventually loading the bases with 2 out before striking out Ensberg to send the game into extra frames.
Houston stranded 2 more in the 10th against reliever Luis Vizcaino. He relieved El Duque, who left the game with an injured neck. But the Sox stranded 2 themselves in the 11th against Astros reliever Chad Qualls.
The actionwas quiet until the 14th inning, when with 2 out,Geoff Blum hit a line drive over the right field wall off reliever Ezequiel Astacio to give the Sox a 6-5 lead.
Later in the inning,Aaron Rowand and Joe Crede had back-to-back singles, then Uribe walked to load the bases with 2 out.The next batter,Chris Widger drew a bases loaded walke to bring home Rowand for a 7-5 lead. They would leave them loaded when Scott Podsednik struck out against reliever Wandy Rodriguez to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 14th,the astros mounted a challenge against reliever Damaso Marte. With 1 out,Orlando Palmeiro walked.Jason Lane then poppoed out. After Palmiero took 2nd on defensive indifference,Brad Ausmus hit what could have been a game-ending grounder to Uribe, but Uribe bobbled the ball and everyone was safe.Palmeiro only could advance to 3rd.
After that,Game 2 starter Mark Buehrle came in from the pen to close the game out.He got Adam Everett to pop out to Uribe to end the game.
Marte picked up the win in his first action since Game 3 of the ALDS in Boston. He went 1 2/3 innings walking 2 and striking out 3 batters for the win.
Ezequiel Astacio got the loss for Houston.

A couple of more notes here about the Series.
The White Sox were 11-1 in the post-season.That ties the 1999 New York Yankees for best post-season record ever since the 3 division format came into effect in 1995.
Only the 1976 Cincinnati Reds went undefeated in the post-season(7-0).
The Sox also become the 1st Central Division team in either league to win the World Series.

I'm happy that the Sox won it all, not just because I'm a fan but because I know this will light a fire under the Cub organization to be more active in pursuing the better players on the market. If the Sox can put it together again, they can own the city again like they did in the early 90's

Here are some interesting notes from the World Series;
The Sox are only the 3rd team ever to go wire-to-wire in the regular season, and sweep the World Series. They join the 1927 Yankees and 1990 Cincinnati Reds as the only teams to pull off this feat.
They outscord the Astros by a grand total of 6 runs in the 4 game sweep. That ties them for the smallest margin in a World Series sweep with the 1950 Yankees, who outscored the Philadelphia Phillies by 6 runs total in thier World Series sweep.
Combining both thr regular season and the post-season,the White Sox won 16 of the last 17 games.Only the 1970 Baltimore Orioles had a similar run at the end, winning 18 of thier last 19 games including post-season.

I was watching Oprah ( ugh normally dont, but I didnt feel like getting up from the computer to change the channel) And this white sox fan gave his WS tickets for sale to give the proceeds to Katrina victims.
Very awesome. I wonder if he had tickets for other days or those were his sole tickets and gave up going for the cause. Either way very unselfish and admireable:clapping :clapping :clapping
