View Full Version : Weirdest Sights of a Player in Uniform

I was looking at a picture of Casey Stengel recently and he was wearing a Brooklyn uniform (it was his original team as a player) which is a rather odd sight when you are used to seeing him in a Yankee or Met Uniform. Babe Ruth in a Brooklyn Dodger and Boston Brave uniform also pops into mind. What other famous players wearing a not commonly associated with jersey do you know of?

I saw a picture of Leo Durocher managing a charity game in 1948 for the PCL. He wore his Brooklyn cap and a uniform that said Los Angeles. A bit of foreshadowing.

I agree with you theAmazingMet, seeing Ruth in a Brooklyn uniform looks weird. When I first saw a picture of him in a Brooklyn uniform I did a double take.

On April 29, 1913, the entire Cincinnati Reds team wore Chicago White Sox uniforms during an official NL game against the Cubs.

Doc Semmens, who had been responsible for the Reds' luggage on their road trip, accidentally left the trunk containing the team uniforms on a train platform in St. Louis. He didn't realize his mistake until the team arrived in Chicago, and managed to borrow the road outfits of the White Sox for the game.

When Sheffield in a Marlin's uni was posted, that's the guy in that uni that I thought of. How about Andre Dawson in it, though, as well? I honestly don't know how Sheffield in a Marlin's uni can be that wierd? He won a WS with them and until Atlanta, had his best year in '96.

I think this whole thread is subjective. What looks odd to another, may not look odd to either of us. I've seen pictures in here that look quite normal to me. Nothing unusal about the uniform on a certain player, but that's what I'm seeing.

I've seen Rickey Henderson in so many uniforms, you could post him in a Girl Guides uniform and I'd say...yeah, so?

The first thing I thought: Did he play for the Marlins. But when I checked baseball almanac, I suddenly remembered that, when he was traded to the Marlins by the Dodgers, he thanked the Dodger fans in an advertisement for their support.

But it is a strange sight indeed.

Perhaps even sadder than Mays going to the Mets -- after all he was just "going home" for a season or two the same way Aaron "went home" to Milwaukee to finish his career -- was Marichal in a Dodger uniform in 1975. A close second is this:

I agree with you theAmazingMet, seeing Ruth in a Brooklyn uniform looks weird. When I first saw a picture of him in a Brooklyn uniform I did a double take.

Seeing the Babe in ANY uni other than the Yanks is weird, to me. Hard to name a player who is so closely identified with one team as he is to NY, while having made his mark with another team (as Babe did with the Bosox). That eliminates guys like Cobb, Johnson, Mantle, etc., who never played with anyone else, or at least not of consequence. Or, to put it another way, someone who achieved superstar status with two or more teams, but his association with one (and his second, no less) so far overshadowing the others.

Anyway, baseball history is filled with guys donning a strange uni, almost always an aging star just hanging on with anybody who will have him. Baseball card collectors know this particularly well; in fact, I have a section of an album that I call "Uniforms that Don't Fit", dedicated to this scenario. Here are a few handpicked strange and tragic examples:

--Yogi and Spahn, Mets ('65)
--Eddie Mathews, Astros ('67)
--Maris, Cards ('68), weird for me, anyway
--Steve Carlton, Indians (!!!) ('87)--Several other strange clubs in Lefty's endgame; I've always found this one the weirdest.
--Bobby Murcer, Giants ('76), Cubs ('78)--Became a Yankee fan in '69, this was my first hero, NO other uni worked for me. Of course, when they traded him for Bonds, my favorite NLer and someone even an ardent Murcer fan would readily admit was twice the player Bobby was. Yanks made it up to me by getting him back in '80, and he got into a WS, completing that troika of players, along with Roy White and Munson, who endured the bad days and deserved a WS.
--McCovey, Padres ('75)--Did this work for anybody out there? Giants did the typical "We're sorry" late-career pickup. (See next.)
--Seaver, Reds ('79)--Just ask any Met fan. Mets do late-career reacquisition then, in unprecedented PR bungle, lose Seaver AGAIN!!! ('83). Don't ask Met fan about this.
--Ron Santo, White Sox (!) ('75). Huh? is all you can say here. Have a feeling this one played poorly up on the North Side.

But perhaps the weirdesr I ever saw? The year was 1911, I believe, and the AL formed an All-Star team for one game, to play an exhibition against (I believe) Cleveland, with all proceeds going to the widow of Addie Joss, who had recently died. The team shot survives, with Ty Cobb, in the peak of his Tiger power, sitting there in a Cleveland outfit. He had somehow forgotten or lost his own uni and had borrowed one for the game. Imagine that. When I first spied the photo in some book, my eye went right to Cobb, as I usually do. And it was a shock--luckily it was explained, since the editors naturally figured that every fan who saw it would not believe it. That's it, thanks for listening!
