Thanks DD. That sure looks like Jackie at first and Junior Gilliam maybe? I wish it was sharper. It would have been a rare day at first for Jackie but that could be Gil, it just doesn't look like him to me. I could be very wrong though. My guess is that this was 1953.

You are right, SS, it is difficult to make them out.

I do, however, think it was 1955. The reason I say that is, while I am not 100% positive, I think the Schaefer Player Awards (posted on OUR Scoreboard) didn't start until 1955.

On the Schaefer awards sign the top name looks like Valo. If that is so it would be 1957, which is the only year Elmer Valo played for the Dodgers. The problem is I don't remember Valo doing anything that would have gotten him player of the week.

Walker was a huge fan favorite and "the face" of the Dodgers for eight productive years in Brooklyn.

He left just before "The Boys of Summer" era and has all but faded from memory.

Curious -- and sad -- that he's hardly ever mentioned anymore.

Is it because he initially objected to Robinson joining the team (he later defended Jackie and gave him batting pointers)?

How did "The People's Cherce" fall from grace?

How did "The People's Cherce" fall from grace?

One wonders whether his interest in Robinson was progressive or just that he proved too talented to berate any longer. His trade to the Pirates, however, proved a boon to the Dodgers as they received Preacher and Cox. His brother the "Hat" was pretty good too. Bigotry is sometimes hard to forget. Look at George Wallace.

The guy in the argyle sweater is pitcher, RUSS MEYER. His nick name was "the MAD MONK".

OUR Dodgers got their first plane, a prop job, I believe it was sometime in the mid-50's, give or take a year.

It is a photographer's ticket, for admittance to OUR Ebbets Field, for a playoff game, at the end of the 1946 season, between OUR Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals won this game 8-4.

Does anyone remember the details, not only of the playoff, but of the end of the regular 1946 season, and what made the playoff necessary?

From what I can tell, Cherinko was a Catcher who played in 30 games in 1937 and 12 games in 1938. He had a very undistiguished career of 75 ABs, 11 Hits, 1 Run, 5 RBIs, 16 SOs and a total BA of .147.

Albosta Pitched in 1941 and had a 0-2 record with a 6.23 ERA. He pitched a total of 13 innings and gave up 11 hits, 8 Walks and had 5 Ks. After that, he must have gone into the service and Pitched for Pittsburgh in 1946 with an 0-6 recordn and a 6.13 ERA in 17 games with 6 saves, 44 Walks and 19 Ks.

So nice to welcome a BROOKLYN DODGER FAMILY to OUR little corner of the baseball world. :)

There are many here, including myself, who certainly remember your Dad, Joe.
WE will keep an eye out for any photos of him and certainly let you know about them.

In the meantime, feel free to browse throughout OUR threads, and do join in on the discussions. If you care to, you can start by telling US all about Dad...YOU will certainly have a very attentive audience here.

Again, welcome!

Hatten had a couple of decent seasons with the Dodgers, but what I remember most was that he was the starting pitcher on April 15, 1947, and he threw the pitch to DiMaggio in Game 6 of the '47 Series that made a hero of Al Gionfriddo...for the second time in that Series.

Joe was 29 when he made his ML debut. What took him so long?

The way I heard it from my dad, he was called by the Dodgers in '41 and was to sign a contract for the 42 season but a little thing called WW2 got in the way. My dad went into the Navy and got out in '45 and went to training camp. His first season was '46. My mom says he could have been a bigger "star" had he reported in '41. He still had a strong arm at 29, he pitched a double header in one day (amazing! Love to see some of the players nowadays do that...LOL!)

I will have to gin up a story about my dad over the next few days. I need to consult my mom on the "Dodger/Cub days" as my dad was already in AAA ball by the time I was born. He was playing on the Havana Cubanos winter ball club in 1954 when I was born in Havana....hehehe.

PS: My wife has turned into an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers... she is looking for any and all pics of the 40's-50's Dodgers and I'm sure she will be contacting all of you who have the cool photo collections. :gt

Has anyone found a photo of the final game at EF on 9/24/57?

Or of the ballpark and area on the day after - or in the week or month after?
For some strange reason, there isn't a whole lot available. I have some newspaper stories, and one photo of a couple of young female fans crying, but thats all I have been able to find.

:gt

One of best places to find any book is abebooks.com.

I found 21 copies of Donald Honig's THE BROOKLYN DODGERS, which was published in 1981 by St. Martin's Press. The prices range from $8.00 to $80.00, depending on the condition of the book.

Charley Gelbert
SS-3B 1929-32, 35-37, 39-40 Cardinals , Reds, Tigers, Senators, Red Sox

A superb fielder with a lively bat, Gelbert was four years into a bright career with St. Louis when an off-season hunting accident nearly cost him his left leg. After sitting out two years, he returned to the majors in 1935 as a utility man. In 1931 Gelbert set records for shortstops in a seven-game World Series with 42 chances, 29 assists, 6 double plays, and a 1.000 fielding average.

Johnny Rizzo
OF 1938-42 Pirates , Reds, Phillies, Dodgers

Rizzo's 23 home runs, 111 RBI, and .301 as a rookie in 1938 helped the Pirates to a strong second-place finish. He slumped badly the next year (.261, 6 HR, 55 RBI) and the Pirates plunged to sixth. He rebounded with the Phillies in 1940, smashing 24 homers.

Don Padgett
C-OF-1B 1937-41, 46-48 Cardinals , Dodgers, Braves, Phillies

After a strong rookie season in the 1937 Cardinals outfield (.314, 10 HR, 74 RBI), Padgett slumped the next year and was converted to catcher, a position he never really mastered. In 1941, three days after Pearl Harbor, the Dodgers purchased his contract for $30,000, waited four years while he served in the Navy, and then sold him to the Phillies in June 1946.

I can't speak to the Gelbert and Padgett situation, BB36, but I do know that Cliff Dapper played for US in 1942. I know because he told me all about it at a Card Show a few years ago. He told me how much he loved playing at OUR Ebbets Field, how much he enjoyed the BROOKLYN fans and how he wished he could have been a BROOKLYN DODGER longer.

I did find an online reference to Clifford Roland (Cliff) Dapper. He appeared in 8 games for the BROOKLYN DODGERS with 17 at bats between April 19 and May 3, 1942. That appears to be his entire major league "career".

Career record here:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dappercl01.shtml (http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dappecl01.shtml)

This link:

http://www.mlbannouncers.com/harwell.html

states that in 1948, Branch Rickey traded Cliff Dapper to the Atlanta Crackers in exchange for Ernie Harwell's broadcasting contract, the first (and possibly only) time a player was traded for an announcer.

Now I'm curious!

According to (http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dappecl01.shtml) Dapper debuted on 4/19/42.

He played in a grand total of EIGHT GAMES, and in 17 AB, hit close to .500 and knocked in 9 runs.

Pretty impressive, I'd say.

Yet, TWO WEEKS after his debut, he was gone. He never played for us -- or anyone else -- again.

What's the story???

By the way, I'm also impressed by Dapper's recollection of Ebbets Field.

On 4/19/42, when Cliff made his debut, the Dodgers were at home against Philadelphia, and then against Boston on the 20th and 21st.

After that, and continuing through May 3rd (Dapper's last appearance in a Dodger uniform), Brooklyn was ON THE ROAD. So at the most, Dapper could not have played more than THREE GAMES AT EBBETS FIELD.

Either Dapper has an incredible memory, or the Brooklyn fans made a hell of an impression in three short days.

My guess? Dapper was romanticizing his brief association with a legendary team in a legenday ballpark.

P.S. Just saw the info about the Dapper-for Harwell "trade." But that took place in '48. I'd still like to know why Dapper disappeared in '42, after only 8 games.

Hard to put all of this together, shlevine.

All I can tell you is that when WE went to that Card Show in Freeport in June 2003, I had never even heard the name Cliff Dapper. It was while WE were there, and I was waiting outside the room where some of OUR players were signing, he came out and started to talk to me. He told me who he was, and I remember thanking him for being a BROOKLYN DODGER, and that was when he started to tell me about how he loved playing at OUR Ebbets Field, and how great the BROOKLYN fans were. He did say that he only played for US in 1942 (never mentioned any time), but wished he could have been there longer. So, perhaps you are right shlevine, he was just "romanticizing", or he was trying to "impress" me(for whatever reason). The stranger question is "what happen to him" between May 1942 and 1948? There must be some info out there, somewhere!

As for Cliff remembering OUR Ebbets Field after only a few games, WE all know, first hand, how Ebbets "grabbed" you, even if you were only there once. So, that does not surpirse me!

I may be able to shed a little more light on this. I just remembered that Cliff, who was walking with the help of a cane that day at the Card Show, did tell me that he was drafted in 1942 (I don't remember him saying just when). He may have been injured in WWII (thus the cane), and that is why he never returned to playing baseball.

According to this statement, listed in BA, Cliff was playing for the Montreal Royals (OUR AAA farm club) in 1948, when he was "traded" for Ernie Harwell..

Harwell made his major league debut in 1948 after becoming the only broadcaster who ever figured in a baseball trade. Earl Mann, President of the Atlanta Crackers, agreed to let him go to Brooklyn if Branch Rickey would send Montreal catcher Cliff Dapper to Atlanta to manage the club. Harwell also worked for the New York Giants and for the Baltimore Orioles before coming to Detroit in 1960.

Dapper played for the Atlanta Crackers after they got him for announcer Harwell. I think he had a managing career after that. It was just probably a matter of numbers as far as catchers goes. The Dodgers had a lot of them. Even Hodges got bumped over to first base.

Looking at that 1947 World Series ring of Leo Durocher, I'm reminded that that was the year Leo was banned from basedball by Commissioner Happy Chandler for "comporting with shady characters." Burt Shotten was the manager that year, I believe, and the Dodgers won their first pennant since 1941 when Leo was at the helm. I'm surprised that Leo even got a ring!

Are you thinking of Pete Reiser?
Yes I was, my mistake! Of course Dolph was a 1B, not CF as Pete was. I mixed up these contemporaries. I actually dished up an interesting qoute from a Baseball Encyclopedia; "Camilli was a calming influence in the Dodger clubhouse, and prevented teammates from picking on rookies Pee Wee Reese and Pete Reiser." (Baseball's Best 1,000, Gentile.)
Was this just a general qoute about how Dolph was an accepting veteran influence, or was there a disdain for Pee Wee or Pete by older vets from the daffiness days. If the former is true this is news to me. I also heard that Dolph was a former boxer whose brother coincidentally was killed during a boxing match.

Was the shuttle related to the three-car Franklin Avenue Express, which had to be the fastest of the BMT trains?

While I never had a reason to take the Shuttle, I do believe they were one and the same, Professor. I remember the Franklin Avenue three-car train (Shuttle) turning on to the outside track (the track coming from Brighton Beach/Coney Island towards the city) as it entered the Prospect Park Station, unloading passengers, then going right back. If memory serves me right that was the only one. Perhaps someone else can shed more light on your question.

It is a far cry from today, Ebbets and Brooklyn were very peaceful and a great place to grow up. I can still smell the bread that was in the air as my grandfather and I got off the train. When I drove with my uncle he took Bedford ave from our houses in Gerritsen beach, then he parked behind the right field fence in that gas station and prayed Duke didn't break a windshield.

There are many great threads on this BROOKLYN DODGERS Forum but this one has become, in my opinion, one of the greatest. It has become one of the broadest collection of photos, many never seen before, of OUR players, OUR Ebbets Field and many Fans ... all a part of many wonderful memories. It's the first thread I go to every night with great anticipation.

I Thank all of you who have contributed in the past and look forward to many more in the future.

This photo perfectly captures the drama of that game:
- Amoros putting on the brakes after his long sprint to keep from running into the fence

- The excited, but ever-alert Reese already in position to take the relay. If another camera had shot this scene from the left-field stands, it would undoubtedly show Pee Wee with his mouth open, yelling "Sandy! Sandy! Throw it here!"

A photo -- and a game -- for the ages.

I got this in the mail today, Luis Olmo was a pretty good player for the Dodgers from 1943-45 then he went to the Mexican league in 1946 for more money. He wound up sitting out 1947-48 waiting to be reinstated, he was allowed to return to the Dodgers in 1949 and helped them down the stretch.

Please feel free to discuss any of this with Mrs. Hatten or your baseball friends.

Hi Sylvia,

My daughter Donna forwarded your e-mail re your late Father-in-law, Joe Hatten. I am now 72 yrs old, but when I was a teenager, the sun rose and set on the Brooklyn Dodgers. I am from NJ, but when I was growing up we had a bungalow in Rockaway/Breezy Point Queens-just across the Marine Parkway Bridge from Floyd Bennett Field(US Navy then) and Flatbush Ave. My first major league game was at Ebbets Field in the mid 40's-I was hooked. I remember during the singing of the Star Bangled Banner, the right fielder took off his cap and he was bald--being a teenager I was stunned.

It was at Breezy Point that I met your Father-in-law and your Mother-in-law (probably 1949 or 1950). Tex Rickart, the PA announcer at Ebbets Field owned a bungalow next to my Uncle Tom Halpin's bungalow. When I heard that some of the Dodgers were Tex's guest that day, I ran the tow or three miles as fast as I could to see them.

There on the patio were Joe Hatten (no.19), PeeWee Reese (no.1), Gil Hodges (no.14) and Eddie Mikses (sp) (No.34 I think). Also, on the porch were Mrs. Reese, Mrs. Hatten, and PeeWee's daughter (Barbara I believe). I spoke to all my heros that day and I had pictures taken with them, the wives and Barbara. I also got their autographs. For a teenage Dodger fan I had a little bit of heaven. I remember Mrs. Reese discussing that night's game with Mrs. Hatten, and they concluded that they were not going to attend it. I was aghast-imagine not going to a Dodger game when they could! I never stopped to think they had access to 77 home games plus 11 at the Polo Grounds.

Sorry to say my autographs and pictures were apparently disposed of when I was drafted-I never saw them again-a mystery. The reason Donna went on the internet was because at a recent Brooklyn Dodger fan club meeting at the library, I brought up a game in which Brooklyn had beaten Pittsburgh but because a Dodger pitcher (Erskine according to one respondent) did not complete pitching to one batter, the game was replayed from that point-I remember listening to it in Sept. (I know because I was back in school-1947 according to the same respondent) Pittsburgh won the game.

At the fan club meeting, no one believed me, but we received confirmation through Donna's efforts and I felt vindicated. It was nice of you to take the time to e-mail me and I was very happy to hear from you.

1952-1956 cards. These are very nice reprint cards of every card printed by Topps between 1952-56 plus 31 other cards that never were, on the cover is Gil, Carl Erskine, and Campy chasing a foul pop. Also in the picture is my uncle Pete, he's the guy under the "R" in Brooklyn. These cards are hard to get, but you'll see them on Ebay here and there, if you liked baseball cards as a young person you'll like these. This box comes from my collection.

Hi Sylvia,

Thank you for your reply and the pictures. You certainly may share my e-mail with Zanette, however she was one of the celebrities that day and I was only an idolizing teenager--so she most likely will not remember me. She can rest assured I remember her and the others. The players were not in uniform - it was I assume an informal visit at Tex Rickard's bungalow at the shore. I would be interested if Zanrette remembers the visit to Breezy Point. I don't remember much conversation on my part-I was a star gazer that day.

While I was in the army the Dodgers moved to LA. This broke a lot of hearts, including mine. People today cannot fathom the affinity between the Brooklyn Dodgers and their devoted fans. There has never been nor will there ever be, in my estimation, any such relationship betweern a sports team and the fan base. You had to have been there = it was special. While in LA in the 70's on a business trip, I saw the Dodgers play the Cardinals but it just was not the same. In fact I rooted for St. Louis and continue to root against LA till this day. It was a dastardly move on the part of O'Malley.

Back to the pictures = over Zanette's right shoulder is the spot where I sat at my first game = upper deck dead center field-60 cents. Can you identify the other two players in the other photo? The one shaking hands looks like what I remember Eddie Mikxes (sp again) looked like. Incidently, if you notice to the left of the players is who I think is Tex Rickard (announcer on the shirt).

Great to talk to someone with a link to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Bill Albrecht

Hi Bill. Thanks for your e-mail! I always enjoy hearing from you. The other players in that photo are: Your left - Hugh Casey, (As you know - Joe Hatten), and Eddie Miksis. I will definitely share your letters with Zanette. She loves it when I share stories that I receive regarding her husband. I will also share your letters with the "Baseball Fever" gang. I don't have much technical information to offer to their discussions, but I hope that they enjoy my bringing some player & fan "Warmth" to their site. Everything I know about Joe and his ole friends bring warmth to my heart! I'll keep in touch, please do the same.
