1970 Bucs

Hey,
i heard that in Sept. 1970 that the Pirates started 9 players who were
all minorities. i am trying to construct the line-up

RF Clemente
C Sanguillen
1B or LF Stargell
P Dock Ellis

missing
SS
CF
2B Dave Cash?
3B
1B/LF

any help would be appreciated.

I used to know this. My friend in Pittsburgh used to quiz me on this every time we went to 3 Rivers together. Let me see if I can recall.

P - Dock Ellis
C - Manny Sanguillen
1B - Al Oliver
2B - Dave Cash

LF - Willie Stargell
CF - Gene Clines(?)
RF - Roberto Clemente

I am not sure about Clines, Pagan may have been at shortstop, and the other infielder I can't recall. That was the first time in major league history that all nine players in the starting lineup were black.

After I wrote this question, I found a book in the library called
"Out of Left Field" which answered this.
Clines was in center, it listed Ca$h at 3B, and shortstop was
Jackie Hernandez, not black but Latino.
and as i recall Manny was from Panama.

There's a problem here. According to MacMillan, Cash did not play third base at all in 1970. He was at third for 24 games in 1971. I'm inclined to think that he was at second with Hernandez and Pagan at third and shortstop.

Pretty good line up if you have Oliver (over 2800 career hits) batting seventh. Bob Veale also pitched that day.

The Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 10-7. We had 'em all the way!
