I heard that Moyer blocked a potential trade to the Astros. Any word on what the M's would have picked up?

--I heard it was one top pitching prospect and another mid-level prospect. He also reportedly turned down a 2nd deal to the Braves. I'd have liked to have gotten some young blood for him (he could have come back next year to finish up if he wanted) and also seen him get a shot at the Series. Can't really blame him for not wanting to move though and Houston probably wouldn't be a good park for him anyway. That bandbox would cost him a couple HR per game.

Moyer is just getting started. He could go on with his bag of junk for at least 10 more seasons...hehehe

He may not have much left, but he has earned the right to finish here, or at least stay here until he chooses to leave. He isn't the cream of the crop, but he isn't the worst out there, and wasn't he perfect at Safeco last year? 10-0 or something?

--This thread was from the trade deadline last season. He will be our Opening Day pitcher.

That's hilarious. I guess that's how bad rumors get started!

While I've got no problem keeping Moyer around for another year, I don't think it's a good idea to get in the practice of keeping any over the hill players simply because people think they've "earned" it. That's a spot that can be used for someone who will help the M's win now and in the future. When someone's through, they're through. There shouldn't be any charity cases.

--I agree . We actually need Moyer though. I don't expect him to be great this year. Maybe he won't even be good, but he our best pitcher last year (not saying much) until Felix came up. We probably couldn't have gotten anybody projected better without paying an arm and a leg in this years market.

Well, what's so wrong with paying an arm and a leg?

I guess that's a question for M's ownership.

if we'd payed an arm and a leg to replace Moyer...we wouldn't have been able to pay an arm and a leg for Washburn...which means...we'd have gotten a substandard player there.

I think we're better off with Moyer and Washburn than we'd be with whoever replaced Moyer (which ironically...COULD have been washburn) and...say...Kevin Appier/Dave Burba...LOL
