Not to go OT on you, Yankees rule, but it boggles my mind that all of these European countries are capable of fielding baseball teams for a competitive tourney, and yet baseball still got the Olympic axe. I had no idea that they even knew what baseball was in nations like Croatia, Czech Rep, etc.

Yesterday I was angry when I read about the IOC's decision to expunge baseball from the Olympics. Today, I’m both angry and confused. Jacques Rogge is an imbecile, plain and simple. Long live baseball in Europe!...and I hope Rogge gets beaned by a screaming line drive the next time he passes a European baseball field. :evil

I can understand your frustration. But as long as MLB doesn't want to let their players go to the Olympics, I think you can also blame them.

It has been said several times at the Olympics thread. The Olympics are held during the MLB season. There is too much money involved to let the players go. Nowadays there are so much players from different countries in MLB, I think you may say that maybe one fourth of MLB players will be on the Olympics. How do you replace them?

But if the best players would go, it will not be a problem to form a team of American Major Leaguers the first time. But just look at the NBA players. The first time it wasn't difficult to form a dream team 1. But with the last Olympics the Americans had a hard time to find players who were willing to play for their country. As a result Argentina won the tournament.
I think that would happen with MLB players as well.

I even wonder if Belgium would have been a real baseball country (they even didn't qualify for the European Championships), Rogge would have decided to lobby against baseball.

Baseball field in Olomouc

THAT FIELD'S HUGE!!! Definetly not a field for batters... The field is really big, and look at how much space's left as foul ground... Is odd, coz baseball field these days are designed to help batting, rather than pitching, as to make the game more exciting

You can see that only the old ballparks in the majors have a considerable foul ground space... The new parks just have the minimum, if any... They prefer putting skyboxes right in the action... That's where the money's at ;)

This year the Greek team is setting itself up for the future. Unlike the past major tournament participations, 13 players out of the 25-man roster actually play in the Greek league and are not Americalns of Greek descent. This may weaken the team orverall but we are slowly trying to get up on our own two feet. In the win against Croatia we had three Greek league players in the starting lineup and in the loss against the Czech Republic we had four. The good thing is that these guys get play time and don;t just sit on the bench watching the Greek-Americans. Unless we get relegated to the B' Division (which I think is highly unlikely) I will deem this tournament a success for us regardless of the final spot...

Something is still unclear to me... what's the next stage after the pools like? Is is the first two from each pool for places 1-4 and all the rest for classification matches?

I think the Germans are a big surprise. They only qualified for this tournament by winning the B championship.

The Russions are a major disappointment to me. Four years ago they were in the finals and now they are dead last.

So when things stay like this, the final will probably be The Netherlands vs Italy again. Ok, ok. The semis have to be played and it ain't over until it's over, but let's be realistic.

It is a shame that beside Holland and Italy no other team is really dominant. The other four teams in group A have killed each other, so Italy could get in second place without any threat of another team.

I am really really proud for our team this year. As I 've said before, this year the team had more Greece based players than ever before. It also came to my attention that we are competing with a 17-man roster. Seven of the Greek-American players did not join the team, some because the couldn 't get a clearance from their teams and some beacause our sorry excuse of a federation could not get their clearance papers on time. However, they had been declared in the roster beforehand and no changes could be made after the tournament started, so the gaps could not be filled in. You can understand that in 5 games, we used 6 pitchers , three of them going the distance, not because they were so dominant, but because of the lack of pitching staff. But most of the Greek league guys came through and I am very proud of that... it means that the domestic level is much higher than I thought it to be, and I am very happily surprised from that.

Imagine that, in the match against Spain, one of our two pitchers has been pitching just for 2 years, and he gave up only 4 runs in 5 innings.
I am really really happy for them... I just hope we have better organization in the World Cup in September.

As for the "surprises" this year, I think that the weather played a huge part. With all the rained out games in the beginning of the tournament, the teams' programming went tou the window completely. It 's not like you have 100 games or so to compensate for losses, so making the absolute best out of your lineups and pitchers is very crucial in these tournaments.

Thank God!!! We'll be spared from his twiching celebrations for the Dutch team's first place. :D :D (Just kidding). Serioulsy now, it was quite an interesting tournament, with its ups and downs, with a lot o fsuprise packages, like Germany and somewhat of a bad organisation if I may add. Italy and Holland proved their dominance once again and it's a shame that no other teams in Europe are in their level yet.
The Greek team finished 9th eventually but they had to deal with a lot of problems, 17-man roster, just one designated starting pitcher (the other four pitched by need), used 9 pitchers in 8 games. But I was very content with the perofrmance of the native guys. This was more a Greek team than any other fielded in the past and it did very well considering the circumstances. Looking forward to the World Cup in September...
