Most of the time I am roaming the big league forums. But it came to my mind to ask which is your favorite Minor League team, and why?

Just curious.

My favourite 'actual Minor League' team is the Vancouver Canadians, just because they are the closest team to me, and that's really close! All my other favourite teams aren't officially Minor League, they are just Minor League level, and are not affiliated with any Minor League Baseball league.

Is this an independant league? I have never heard of it.

For the last 20 years that's been an easy choice...the Greenville Braves. But they moved to Pearl, Mississippi this year. And even though the Red Sox put a Class A team, the G'ville bombers, in there and the Sox are my favorite AL team, I'm just having a hard time warming up to them. So I guess my favorite teams for the time being are the Rome Braves and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

It's a newly formed independent league out of the ashes of another independant league. It's got a good rivalry going as three of the teams are within 55 miles of each other(then again, any team that plays near Boston tends to get rivalry feaver :D )

I have to go with the High Desert Mavericks (Class A/Upper, California League, Kansas City Royals).

They are the local pro team, and have been in the area since 1991. I worked as an usher for three seasons, 1994-95-96 (met Bob Feller here in '94), and have been a volunteer keeping the batting stats for the message board operator since '97.

I'm also a member of the Booster Club, and chair the committee to choose the Player of the Month, and Pitcher of the Month. It's a great committee, not only of knowledgable fans, but three played Minor League ball at one time. One even pitched in the Cal League in the mid-60s.

You have to explain to me. How does a Texan become a fan of the CHICAGO Cubs and the IOWA Cubs?

Of course, when I was growing up it was the Denver Bears, as I lived about 30 miles from Denver. But, since Colorado has MLB, the Bears no longer exist (they changed their name from Bears to Zephyrs in the mid 80's anyway - dumb move - Bears was always a popular name and still is. Many Colorado Rockies fans would like to see the name Denver Bears for the team).

Anyway, I moved to Arizona in 1986 when I began a new career as a Border Patrol Agent. So I can't say the Colorado Springs Skysox are my favorite minor league team - I've never seen them play.

As a Cardinal and Oriole major league fan, I used to follow their minor league clubs in the Sporting News. Thus, the Tulsa Oilers, Louisville Redbirds and Rochester Red Wings were semi-favorites.

Today, it would be a Class A independent team - the Yuma Scorpions. They are playing their maiden season this year. Yuma has had minor league franchises before - the Yuma Bullfrogs collapsed financially a couple of years ago. The Scorpions are playing well, and have some local talent on the club. The only problem is, it just is not that comfortable to go to Desert Sun Stadium in the summer (Desert Sun was built for the Padres - they used to hold their spring training in Yuma). They have a method of cooling the stadium (it's even hot in the evenings here), but it's not quite enough. This league needs to play winter ball (especially because the population increases considerably in the winter when the Snowbirds - senior citizens - come down from the north).

I remember the Dodgers long run with the AAA Albuquerque Dukes. That franchise moved to Portland a few years back. Albuquerque now has the "Isotopes," a farm club of the Marlins.

Back in the 1960's, the Dodgers had Spokane as the AAA franchise. The Spokane Indians of the PCL - later called the Spokane Dodgers, although I'm not sure if Dodgers was their official name or just an affectionate name because of their parent franchise at the time.

I like the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the Class A California League
affiliate of the Angels. I guess that makes old Jack Benny's line appropros: "Train for Palm Springs is now boarding (former home of the Palm Springs Angels and the former spring home of the Angels) via 'Anaheim, Azusa, and Cucamonga.'"

That would be a funny way to get to PS, and Anaheim would actually be out of the way. Former MLB player Hank Aguirre was from Azusa for those that remember him on the Tigers and others.

Just a play on Mark Bellhorn's surname...I especially like it because he seems to be a quiet, unemotional character, not a hellion. I think that the contrast is amusing.
Like Bellhorn, I am pretty quiet, maybe more emotional, and I liked to strike out a lot when I played baseball. I was just lacking the walks, power, and defensive ability. At least, I hope that Mark still has some power, because I'd like to see him stick around and help out the Bosox some more.
And I strike out a little less now that I only play slow pitch. ;^)

They say you never forget your first love, and for me that was the Arkansas Travelers. I saw many games at Ray Winder Field as a kid, from about 1971 through 1982 or so, when I started college. Even bought a share of Travs stock for $5 back when they were still selling them at games.

At Ray Winder, I saw Al Hrabosky, Bob Forsch, Keith Hernandez, Garry Templeton, Larry Herndon, Bake McBride, Tito Landrum, Ken Oberkfell, Tommy Herr, Andy Van Slyke -- a whole generation of Cardinal farm hands passed through LR during that time. Obviously, I also undoubtedly saw many others playing for the Travs' Texas League opponents during those years -- most have slipped my mind or made no impression at the time. I did see Denny McClain's 1973 appearance at Ray Winder with the Shreveport Captains during one of his comeback attempts -- he lasted less than an inning, and gave up five or six runs. Pretty sad.

Only went to a couple of games during my college years. Then I moved to Atlanta. Once the internet came around it got a lot easier to keep up with them from here. I've been back for a couple of games in the last few years. Still a great ballpark, and the fan experience is wonderful, thanks to GM Bill Valentine's efforts.

My second favorite is the Asheville Tourists. My wife's family is from Asheville, so we visit there often, and I catch a game at McCormick Field whenever it's feasible. Doesn't have the personal history for me that Ray Winder does, but it's close -- we had a group outing to the ballpark for a game in lieu of a rehearsal dinner the night before we got married, and my dad got to throw the ceremonial first pitch. It's a beautiful place to see a game -- so said Babe Ruth and Branch Rickey, and so say I as well. GM Ron McKee is also one of the best in the business and has made it a great place for fans of any age.

I loved Engel Stadium, and I think AutoZone Park in Memphis is a terrific place to see a game, but I've never felt any sort of emotional, fan-type connection with the Lookouts or Redbirds.

Some comments after reviewing this thread:
(1) Enjoy the Vancouver Canadians while you can, there's serious talk about tearing down Nat Bailey Stadium and putting a curling venue there; upon hearing this, by the way, Canadian poet laureate George Bowering stated, "It's a dreadful, awful place, but it's where baseball is, eh? It's a baseball park. What are they going to put in there, curling? Come on! This is not Winnipeg, this is Vancouver. Curling! Who is going to curl?"
(2) The North Shore Spirit is not a Minor League Baseball team. It is a member of the independent Can-Am League.
(3) The Yuma Scorpions is not Class A or otherwise a Minor League Baseball team. It is a member of the independent Golden Baseball League.
(4) The Minor League team in Des Moines was known as the Iowa Oaks from 1969-1981.
(5) The Minor League team in Spokane was known as the Indians throughout its affiliation with the Dodgers. Spokane was never known formally as the Dodgers.
(6) If I lived in Texas and was a fan of Chicago sports teams, I would frequent Houston to cheer on the Cubs when they came to town, Arlington when the White Sox came to town, and so forth for the Bears, Bulls and Black Hawks, and I would check the college schedules religiously to see if by some chance the Illini were to play any non-conference games anywhere in the area.
(7) The Lancaster Barnstormers is not a Minor League Baseball team. It is a member of the independent Atlantic League.

They ruled the AA Eastern League for two years in the early 80's and then moved to God knows where.
Now I'd have to say the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League. So many major leaguers have played Cape ball it's insane.

The Holyoke Millers played from 1977-80 as a Brewers farm team and in 1981-82 as an Angels affilliate before the team was moved to Nashua.
The Chatham A's is an amateur collegiate summer league team and is not a Minor League Baseball team.

It is with much pleasure that I can emend my previous comment noted above. I visited Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver for a ballgame last week, and the curling venue was being built on an adjacent parcel of land and Nat Bailey has formally and officially been spared. Currently funding is being arranged for some improvements to the grand old yard. This is wonderful news as Nat Bailey is a terrific ballpark with great fans.

I'm from the Scranton, PA area and I've watched players like Pat Burrell, Johnny Estrada, Dave Hollins and Chase Utley step through there before playing for Philadelphia. Also, in their first game ever (they were an expansion team to the International League in the late 80's), Curt Schilling pitched against them. He was with the Rochester Red Wings at the time. They made it to the IL/PCL World Series but I believe the games were cancelled due to the 9/11 attacks.

The Birmingham Barons because they are close and I actually get to go to the games. :gt
A hearty amen to this post! I too live in the B'ham area and am a long-time Barons fan going back to the days of Reggie Jackson & Company at Rickwood Field in 1967. The Barons have existed since 1887 & have won sixteen Southern Association/Southern League championships: 1906, 1912, 1914, 1928, 1929, 1931, 1936, 1948, 1951, 1958, 1967, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1993 & 2002. Former Barons include Pie Traynor, Burleigh Grimes, Billy Southworth, Earl Whitehill, Alvin "General" Crowder, Jimmy Piersall, Walt Dropo, Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue, Jack McDowell & Frank Thomas among others. I grew up on minor league baseball, first with the Portsmouth Cubs (they changed their name to Merrimacs, named after the iron-clad warship that was built at the Gosport Shipyard in Portsmouth and battled the Monitor in Hampton Roads Harbor during the Civil War) until the Piedmont League folded in 1955.

The Tidewater Tides were born in 1961 and played in Portsmouth for nine years, first in the Sally (South Atlantic) League, then the Carolina League. In 1969, the New York Mets moved their Triple-A farm club from Jacksonville and a new ballpark (Met Park) was built in an area of Norfolk that was convenient to Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and the Newport News-Hampton area. While at Met Park, the Tides won 2 International League pennants, 5 Governors Cup playoffs, and a Triple-A World Series.

In 1993, under new ownership, the Tides moved into a new stadium, Harbor Park on the downtown Norfolk waterfront. At that time, the city snubbed their noses at the rest of the area and changed their name to the Norfolk Tides. They wanted a new team with a new ballpark and a new name and logo. They wanted to abandon their past legacy and build one of their own. The Norfolk Tides have never won a championship.

For awhile, I followed the fortunes of the Denver Bears (later the Zephyrs) in the American Association. Denver won 8 Association pennants in their Triple-A history, with a Junior World Series title and a Triple-A Alliance championship when the AA and the IL merged and played interlocking schedules. As bad as the Colorado Rockies have been, I wonder if Denver fans miss the exciting brand of ball played by the Bears in old Mile-High Stadium.

Lately, I have been following the Peninsula Pilots, a team in the Coastal Plains League, a college summer league. They use wooden bats, play 9-inning games, and as best as I can remember, the quality of play is about the same as the old Class A Carolina League.

Yeppers, another Tides fan here. I live close to the park, and the Mets are my favorite team, a win-win situation.

I also grew up on minor league baseball. Living in Oneonta, NY, I don't know how many Oneonta Yankees (New York- Penn League, Class A) games I have been to. I was fortunate to see alot of great players come up through the NY- Penn League in the '80s. They are no longer the Yankees, and are now the Tigers (Detroit affiliate). Now that I live in the Tidewater area, I no longer follow them, but I still hold a lot of great memories from Damaschke Field.

Though I'm a huge Yankees fan, my favorite minor league team is the Durham Bulls (for locality reasons). Of course I never miss the series with the Columbus Clippers and I always make sure my seats are on the visiting side when the Clips are there. I still really enjoy the Bulls. It was exciting seeing individuals like Jorge Cantu and Johnny Gomes playing for the Bulls (now on the Devil Rays). Now I believe the big prospect coming out of the Bulls is BJ Upton. Who I have seen play many time, but I'm really not that impressed with. He still has plenty of growing to do (both streangth and maturity).

The Bowie Bay Sox. AA team for the Orioles. Minor League Baseball is very fan friendly and approachable.

The North Shore Spirit is not a Minor League Baseball team. It is a member of the independent Can-Am League.... The Yuma Scorpions is not... a Minor League Baseball team. It is a member of the independent Golden Baseball League.... The Lancaster Barnstormers is not a Minor League Baseball team. It is a member of the independent Atlantic League.

Get off it. (I know this is an old post, but this is a peeve...)

The minor (small "m") leagues were called that for a hundred years before "Minor League Baseball" trademarked the term. And they all started out as independents, anyway. If anything, we should call the independent leagues "the minors" and the affiliated leagues something else.

In any event, I'm not going along with the stupid official terminology. The traditional usage, which everybody understands, makes a lot more sense.

I like the Toledo Mudhens because I am a Detroit Tigers fan. King Hessman is a beast, and I think we have the best offense in the league.

Another vote for the Sand Gnats of Savannah here. I live right in the middle of Georgia so I'm about 2 - 3 hours from the:

Sand Gnats
Augusta Green Jackets
Rome Braves
Columbus Catfish
(soon to be) Gwinnett Braves

I've always enjoyed going to Grayson Stadium and now that they are a Mets affilate team. . . all the more reason to go!

Evansville Otters! Any other Frontier League fans out there?

Otters are my favorite team (proximity, informality), my favorite venue is Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, MI. Great atmosphere, fans , team, employees; how they do it right in such a remote setting is very pleasantly surprising.
