I went ahead and looked at Rodriguez' statistics and noticed he doesn't strikeout all that much for a slugger. Then I wondered how many times the great Pujols strikes out (he's a young hitter for the Cardinals). I saw that Pujols makes Rodriguez look like Jose Canseco. Rodriguez is good for over 100 strikeouts a year but Pujols, who averages over thirty homeruns a year, has yet to strikeout 100 times in one season. In fact last year he hit 47 homeruns and only struck out 52 times. This caused me to wonder if anyone has ever had more homeruns than strikeouts in a single season.

Guys that have done it:
George Brett in 1980 with 24 dingers and 22 strikeouts.
Don Mattingly didn't do in 1985 but he did hit 35 homers with only 41 strikeouts and that's pretty darn good.
Yogi Berra did it a lot. In 1950 he hit 28 homeruns with 12 K's! 1951: 27 and 20. 1952 30 and 24. 27 and 20 in 1955 and 30 and 29 in 1956. In 1957 he showed off by strking out as often as he homered which was 24 times.
Ted Williams in 1941 not only batted over .400 but he also hit 37 homeruns and stuckout 27 times. In 1950 he had the ratio of 28 to 21. 1955 28 and 24.

That's all I've found. Anyone know of other players who have done it?

Players who've hit 40 or more HR in a season with fewer strikeouts than HR...

Ott: 42/38 in 1925

Mize: 51/42 in 1947
40/37 in 1948
And a 25/24 year in 1950

Big Klu: 40/34 in 1953
49/35 in 1954
47/40 in 1955
And a 35/31 year in 1956

Thanks for the info, Shlevine. The only way I found the few I did was to go on baseball-reference.com and scan a few guys that led the leagues in at bats per strikeout and look for sluggers.

Joe Dimaggio did it seven times and in 1950 he had 32 HRs and 33 strikeouts.

He was pretty decent. :laugh

The highest HR/SO ratio of all time was Billy Southworth of the '26 Giants with 5 HRs to 1 SO in 116 ABs, doesn't really count.

4 guys with more than twice as many HRs as SOs with at least 500 ABs:
3.666 - Joe Sewell '32 yankees 11/3 in 503 ABs
3.111 - Tommy Holmes '45 Braves 28/9 in 636 ABs
2.333 - Yogi Berra '50 yanks 28/12 in 597 ABs
2.307 - Joe Dimaggio '41 yanks 30/13 in 541 ABs

1 guy with twice as many HRs as SOs, 500 ABs, and was player/MGR on world champs:
2.000 - Lou Boudreau '48 Indians 18/9 in 560 ABs

Joe DiMaggio was the hardest slugger to whiff.
No other power hitter even comes close..............

Career homeruns 361 Career strikeouts 369

Joe also played in Yankee stadium before they moved the left field fences in...
He would've had another 40-50 homeruns in todays Yankee stadium....

Check the career numbers for all other power hitters and you'll be amazed by
Joe's stats
