Several years ago I read a fantastic book about the life of a baseball scout. I have totoally forgotten the title and the scout's name. Some specifics:
1. The scout played in the Cardinals farm system in the 1940s, I believe.
2. The scout commited suicide during the writing of the book and the author talks about it.
3. The book came out sometime in the early 1990s becasue I remember a reference to Nomar Garciaparra and he was in the minor leagues at the time.
Does anyone know the title of this book?

Prophet of the Sandlots? Great book.
I checked the description of this book. I don't think it the right one. Prophet of the Sandlots came out in 1990 was written in 1988-89. Nomar Garciaparra would have been still in high school at the time of the book's writing. I'll keep looking.

Prophet of the Sandlots: Journeys With a Major League Scout (Paperback)
Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
From 1942 to 1988, the late Tony Lucadello was a baseball scout. Working first for the Chicago Cubs and then for the Philadelphia Phillies, he signed up 50 players who went on to the major leagues, including such stars as Ferguson Jenkins and Mike Schmidt. Winegardner, who accompanied Lucadello during his last year on the job, depicts an uncommonly generous man who sat through hundreds of college, high school and sandlot games, ever on the lookout for young men with the "right stuff" to take them to the top--and always willing to help them. In illuminating Lucadello's life, which ended in suicide, Winegardner ( Elvis Presley Boulevard ) evokes the spirit of baseball.
