Oooooh... this is a good one. I'll have to get back to you after I think about it for a while. I have a feeling my lineup will look a lot similar to yours.

I generally agree with your list, but I would add Kent Tekulve as a reliever/closer. The Rubberband Man deserves to be recognized.

Here is my choices, with a little of my reasoning. But I realize that a good case could be made for others.

Catcher – Manny Sanguillen (tough choice between him and Kendall)
1B – Willie Stargell ( leads in HR’s, by a long shot, and RBI’s)
2B – Bill Mazeroski ( still holds the Major League record for most DP by a middle infielder, Career and Season)
SS – Honus Wagner (if he could be taught to turn the double play, if not I’d move him to 3B, or 1B or OF, he could play anywhere)
3B – Pie Traynor (Who can? Ameri-can!...great clutch hitter, good RBI
production)
LF – Paul Waner – ( pure hitter - Quote about him…"I saw a lot of good hitters but I neversaw a better one than Paul
Waner. I mean I once threw a side arm spitter right into his belly and he hit it into the upper deck." - BurleighGrimes
CF – Max Carey ( speed, lots of speed, great performance in the ’25 season
and series)
RF – Roberto Clemente (no explanation needed, but worthy of a
quote….."The big thing about (Roberto) Clemente is that he can hit any pitch. I don't mean only strikes. He can hit a ball off his ankles or off his ear." -Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal)

On the bench…
OF - Hazen Shirley “Kiki” Cuyler
OF – Barry Bonds (if we talk about Pirate stats only, he misses the starting
line-up)
OF – Ralph Kiner (the man could hit a baseball)
SS – Dick Groat( he could turn those DP’s with Maz)
SS – Arky Vaughan ( I know, I already named Groat, but either could fill in anywhere in the infield)
1B – Dick Stuart ( Dr. Strangeglove…. first man to knock in 100 RBI’s in each
league)
C – Jason Kendall ( maybe should be starting)

Starting Pitchers
Wilbur Cooper (All-Time wins leader)
Babe Adams ( held Cobb to a 1-11 performance in the 3 games he won versus Detroit inthe ’09 series, and was still there to pitch a scoreless inning in the ’25 series victory)
Bob Friend (longevity, more than anything else, earns him a spot. The Pirates don’t hav a long history of great hurlers)
Vernon Law – (longevity, again, plus a great season and series in ’60 got him
the nod.)
Bob Veale – (the best K pitcher to put on a Pirate uniform, the man could
bring it!)
Bullpen
Elroy Face (most lifetime saves)
Kent Tekulve (2nd in saves)
Goose Gossage ( not quite as dumb as letting Koufax go)
Dave Guisti ( Great W-L pct for a reliever, good WHIP)

Manager- Danny Murtaugh
3B Coach – Fred Clarke
1B Coach – Chuck Tanner

1B – Dick Stuart ( Dr. Strangeglove…. first man to knock in 100 RBI’s in each league)

For starting pitchers don't forget Jesse Tannehill and Vic Willis. Pud Galvin also pitched for them, but his best years were with Buffalo.

C Tony Pena (Had to see him play; Sanguillen and Kendall are terrible defensively.)
1B Willie Stargell
2B George Grantham
3B Pie Traynor
SS Honus Wagner
SS Arkie Vaughn (Id like to put him a 2B but, likely isn't realistic)
CF Max Carey
CF Lloyde Waner
RF Paul Waner
RF Roberto Clemente
LF Fred Clarke
LF Ralph Kiner

SP Sam Leever
SP Wilbur Cooper
SP Deacon Phillippe
SP Babe Adams

RP Kent Tekulve

I am more of a old-timer Pirates fan. and less a current fan. They are one of my favorite teams but I watch the Cubs and Red Sox more. I am into the WS winning Pirates of 1979 and earlier. But my all-time starting lineup would be:

1B: Willie Stargell (Pops is one of my favorite baseball players)
2B: Bill Mazeroski
3B: Pie Traynor
SS: Honus Wagner (loved the pictures of him... really cool)
OF: Roberto Clemente
OF: Lloyd Waner
OF: Paul Waner
C: Jason Kendall (can't think of anybody else)

SP: Wilber Cooper
RP: Kent Tekulve

I have a peculiar rule- I don't have any player on two all-time teams. For instance, since Barry Bonds would be on my Giants all-time team, he is not elligible for my Buccos all-time team. Kiki Cuyler, in my mind, makes the Cubs team as a reserve. I have my reasons.

C- Jason Kendall
1B- Willie Stargell
2B- Bill Mazeroski
SS- Honus Wagner
3B- Pie Traynor
LF- Paul Waner
CF- Lloyd Waner
RF- Roberto Clemente (I see that the above post does not have Roberto starting. Can we ban this person from the Pirates forum? )

Bench
C- Manny Sanguillen
SS- Arky Vaughan
LF- Ralph Kiner
LF- Fred Clarke
LF- Brian Giles (his numbers while with the Pirates are exceptional)
RF- Dave Parker

Rotation
Wilbur Cooper
Babe Adams
Bob Veale
Deacon Phillippe
Bob Friend

Bullpen
LRP- Vern Law
LRP- John Candelaria
LRP- Doug Drabek
MRP- Dave Guisti
SU- Roy Face
CP- Kent Tekulve

I could see a case for all of the starting pitchers being pre-1950, but I wanted to give a few spots to more recent Buccos. Drabek makes it mostly because of his Cy Young.

Can a mod who is knowledgabke about Pirates history add a poll to this thread?

I want the results for the All-Time position by position battle. I have a thread about it in the history forum if you're interested.
