View Full Version : What Do You Think Of Damon's Book?

Honestly, I was a big admirer of Damon's, but I'm really disappointed in him as a person after reading some excerpts of his book. He is a very talented baseball player, but he really comes off as an immature jerk in his personal life, particularly in regards to his relationship with his first wife. I realize that she may not have been an angel either -- it takes two to make a marriage work --but he really looks bad. I am not naive, expecting him to be a Boy Scout, but geez I expected better of him.

Have any of you read through the book? What do you think?

I haven't read, nor will I read it. The excerpts were plenty enough for me:

``In baseball, as the wife, you are always the last to know,'' she said. ``I found pictures of him and her together. He told me at the time we were breaking up that there were three (other women) and he couldn't decide between the three of them.''

This speaks volumes about this idiot's character. So the new wife "won" over the others - lucky her! Just remember the old saying a leopard doesn't change it's spots. How long will she hang around if his career and popularity go south? And if he stays in the limelight will she be enough for him?

What was he thinking writing this trash - he has two children! He must be a very selfish person to put all this above his kids.

Damon - go to the Yankees - please!

I'll play devil's advocate here and say that it's unfair for anyone to judge Damon without reading the whole book. Were any of us expecting to find an excerpt about his grand slam in the 2004 ALCS? Remember, this is the press we're talking about--they're going to pull stuff from the book that makes headlines. If it's true, then so be it, but let's not rake him over the coals until we've read it. JMO.

Johnny Damon appeared on Regis and Kelly yesterday plugging his book, and Regis, who sat in Steinbrenner's box Sunday night, told Damon this....

pesky6 - true I haven't read the book, but I find it deplorable that ANYONE writes this stuff when there are others who will suffer the consequences. His children are going to hear all about this crap.

I stand by my statement - he's selfish, enjoying his 15 minutes of fame and George can have him.

I have to agree with what has been said however I bought the book and waiting for it to arrive from Amazon.............

Shame on him for even bringing his first wife and family into this book.

I'm not a Roger Clemens fan by no means, just never liked him but I do admire his work ethic as well as his ability to keep his marriage and family together happily through out his career. Fame, money and the fast life should have nothing to do with a "reason" or excuse for cheating.

I like what has been said..................I'm sure Michelle will learn it her way. His spots won't change!

Yeah I agree...

I mean heck he may be a bad person but on the field he gets it done. So I mean I'll take him anyday on my team.

This thread inspired me to read Damon's book.

He tries very hard to sound likable but I don't think he pulls it off. Some of the baseball material is interesting and some of it is a little questionable (in a chapter title he refers to the Red Sox as Americas Team).

While discussing his first marriage, he sounds immature at best and a real jerk at worst. I got the impression that he sees himself as a victim of his first wifes insecurity. He is not the kind of guy I would want my daughter (if I had one) to bring home.

I have to agree to a point..............we all have to realize Damon, as well as other athletes, may appear or be our idols but they are just plain people like us. And all the money, fame and publicity can't make them what we want them to be. It sometimes makes them feel they have the world..........but they don't. I can imagine it's a difficult life. From a fans point of view, I 'd think they have it all..........money, money and more money than I will ever make in my lifetime. They have a "job" of playing a game......how cool is that? And for most of them a spouse who is to die for (how I wish I could look like one of their wives, lol) so why cheat? Why get so drunk you act like a total fool? Why get involved with drugs and domestic violence? It's all the pressure, like you and me,no difference just that they seem to have it all. He's a regular guy..........but most of us fans put him on a petastool. He's actually still quite young too, only 30???? I think. So he has been through more than most 30 year olds marrying young, being a young father of twins no less and making all this money so young.........it's quite overwhelming.

I'm enjoying the book and where I'm not a fan of him bad mouthing his first wife for the reasons most of you have stated, I also have interpeted it as how much he really loved her and will always love her and at one point in the book makes reference to how they would "still be together today". That makes me feel he regrets alot and maybe both of them had to do with the break up. Regardless, his personal life is not my business until he made it in the book, so yeah, Johnny, you should have left it out,lol

My main point is sometimes we do get a big let down when we admire or idoloze these guys. They are in the public's eye and we can all judge them with the old "if it were me" but bottom line is we don't know what it is like to be Johnny or any athlete so when they write a book, we sometimes see the true guy behind the hair and we may not like him too much after the book is done.

I have enjoyed his frankness. Canseco on the other hand, now that man made his image a real mess with that book, I never finished it as I had enough!

I can see the women hate him...but I will put my cynical viewpoint in.

Have you seen the women? Do you think they would even notice him if he worked in an A &P. Heck no...they are with him for $$$ and security

Minor Leaguers have groupies that want to sink their wedding vows into them as soon as they get MLB money.

So to really hate this guy for realizing the reason they are with him, and doing what he wants is not reason enough to say he is a bad person.

Actually I don't hate him, I think he's quite adorable.........and I work for a supermarket bigger than A&P :D and I made out pretty good for myself meeting my husband there, lol and I hope you didn't get from my post I think he's a "bad person" he's not. My point is with his lifestyle, money and fame he's just a regular guy and should not be put on a petastool. But as fans we tend to.

As far as the women who tend to groupies.........I don't feel his presnt wife is one of them and his x was his high school sweetheart. His new wife has gotten some bad press and I feel that may be plain old jelousy. She may have fake boobs, she may be a bottle blonde yada, yada, yada but who are any of us to judge the girl? We don't know her. Once again it's life in the fish bowl..............She's got Johnny and many of them are just envy with green. Many women may be groupies nad just want to get their claws in a player for the money and charmed lifestyle but cut Michelle a break........it's really none of our business. I really wish Johnny and Michelle well and I hope they can truely "make it".
