By doing so,(utilising instant replay) wouln't we take out of the game the "human factor" ? If everyone wants the perfect call each time, we do have the technology and the means to install it in the game....But like artificial turf, it would take even more of the essence of the game. Sorry but I would prefer the game to keep a certain degree of imperfection. It's imperfections are what embodies what we are.
BTW, merci pour toutes vos explications et dites bonjour ŕ Éric Cyr.
Johnny.
I can respect and understand you position, I'm not saying we should have an electronic strike zone, but there are certain plays, like a homerun that is foul being called fair, or a ball an oufielder dives for that is actually dropped but the umpire can't see it hit the ground because his view is blocked.
Or a great one, the Yankees won a game on a homerun by jeter that wasn't a homerun because a stupid fan reached over the fence and caught the ball. That type of stuff could use replay in my opinion.

moises alou recently lamented about giants players not getting together after games and hanging out.
do you think that it is necessary / important / vital for players to be friends and spend time with each other off the field, h-g? does it help towards winning ways on the field?
also, the giants have not had an active kangaroo court this season.
in what ways do kangaroo courts benefit a club? thanx.
Thats a good question, and I'm not sure I have the answer to it. You see on a baseball team you have 25 guys that all come from different parts of the nation and from different types of backgrouds and different types of values.
I personally don't frequent bars and hardly drink at all, and thats usually what happens when guys go out after a game. I've been on 3 championship teams in pro ball and on those teams it wasn't necessary for us to all go out and hang out. We were all good friends, played hard and got along great at the field but only a select few hung out after games.
But ever team is different, and I would suspect that the A's a few yrs back did quite a bit of hanging out away from the ballpark.
kangaroo courts can be good or pretty boring. If you have some clowns on the team that are always doing dumb stuff, court can be quite funny.
We have court and it is pretty darn good. Our pitching coach is the judge and I guess he's been doing it for yrs. His name is the honorable Judge "Sh****", he wears a long haired wig and puts on a judges robe, its pretty cool and brings the guys together for some good natured ribbing. But I've been on teams that don't do it also.

I agree wholeheartedly, that the imperfections embodie what we are, but sadly, in this day and age of TV and instant replay, every minute error is replayed over and over and the umps/referees in sport are on a hiding to nothing, so the time will come that even baseball will have decisions made on video footage rather than on 'spur of the moment action', as seen by the ump - as happens in other sports which have "third umpires" or "video referees" to make decisions. It is getting to the stage in OZ in Rugby League, that referees rely on "video referees" to make more than 50% of the try (touchdown) decisions, for fear they will make the wrong decision.
That is my fear the officials will depend on this and not be able to make calls the normally would be able to make. I thought the NFL guys on field calls were hampered by replay, especially when it was first intorduced.
I feel we may open up a whole pandora's box if we depend on replay in a sport like baseball. Who is to say that a two dementional camera angle was in the best position to make a particular call.

mattingly posted in another thread and i'd like yer opinion, h-g.
......................................
Just one of my pet peeves. It was from a few days ago (Sat 7/23, to be precise), in which starter Wade Miller, who hadn't previously won since May 30th (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/playbyplay/MLB_20050723_BOS@CHW), couldn't find the plate in the 3rd inning (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/playbyplay/MLB_20050723_BOS@CHW). He'd sandwiched 2 walked batters with a wild pitch, leaving the bases loaded, only 1 out.
Up comes the White Sox' Carl Everett, who promptly fouls off the first pitch. I immediately say to myself, "There goes that wasted opportunity", since I knew things were going down a lousy road. Everett then whiffed on the 1-2 count. Paul Konerko then flied out to RF on the 3-1 count.
Why would someone swing away on a 3-1 count when you either get another chance to hit (or take), or you get a run in? That part I don't understand.
The pitches looked all either high at the shoulders, low enough for Jack Nicklaus to hit it, or wide enough that you'd need Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to hit that pitch. Still, they looked enticing, since they weren't ridiculously outside. However, had the hitters been more patient, I think they could've gotten an RBI walk, if not 2. Boston won the game 3-0.
If it were you, the pitcher walked 1 or 2 batters, perhaps even hit a batter, would you be aggressive and hope to score a 2-run single or double? Or would you just be patient, effectively giving the pitcher more rope so as to further lose his confidence?
Thanks.
Well when a pitcher is struggling to find the strike zone, he usually is just trying to throw the ball over the plate until he can find his release point again and then go back to pitching.
But you have to remember that these are major League pitchers we're talking about not high schoolers. They are in the big leagues for a reason, and a big reason is their ability to pitch their way out of trouble and it sounds like thats exactly what Wade did. The part about the 3-1 pitch, If I'm not mistaken the bases were loaded with 2 outs and Wade certainly didn't want to walk in a run so Konerko was looking dead fastball, it just didn't work out.

This is a good point that us fans miss sometimes. The difference between a homer and a fly out is a fraction of an inch sometimes. Konerko got what he was looking for and just missed it. That happens to all hitters. But I bet Paul would like a second shot at it!

I don't get fined that often, its usually the team clowns that are the main focus in court. I suppose I've paid some 5 dollar fines, thats minor league. Never been in a Major league court.

Absolutely he would like it back, but how often during a game are you in your mind, 100% sure of what pitch is coming? Not very, and Konerko gets paid to drive in runs not stand there and look at 3-1 fastballs.

Er, this logic has never made any sense to me. There will be enough "human" mistakes on the field.
Any human endeavours are bound to be imperfect. So if you want perfection, why not a machine to replace, on a permanent basis, the pitchers.... It is the only position that has already a machine doing the job on a regular basis...This way, all balls could be strikes pitched at 150 miles per hour....
But no errors in pitching and since it is a machine that pitches only strikes, no need for home base umpires. :(
I can already hear people scream and calling for the Inquisition. Not my best idea, but you get the picture.
Errors on the field are inherent to the game. The rapidity and suddenness of the action makes way for them. Errors in managing a game and errors in umpiring are also part of the game. The manager's mistake are, sometimes, less apparent, but they still are there.
Every one of them is a "professionnal" and still they are human.

HG, now that the Palmeiro story has broken nationwide, I'm wondering about something that I heard recently. I know your opinion about steroids etc., but I am curious about supplements. The "Ripped Fuel" type of supplements that you see at the local GNC have been used by people to gain mass and strength. Most of the people busted for steroids claim that they don't know where the steorids came from, or that they didn't know what they were using had steroids. I had thought it was common knowledge that these supplements are notorious for their impurities and for the companies lacing them with steroids, something that they can get away with because they aren't regulated by the FDA.
But from your experience, are ballplayers using this stuff without knowing what's in it, or potentially in it?
Just curious...

I have recieved information from a quality source that says Major League Baseball has tested many of the products available in GNC or any other nutritional store that an athlete might use and all of them would pass a steroid test.
Obviously if they would have tested the "precursors" before they became illegal, those would have failed the test. But, I"m talking about the Proteins, Ripped fuel (fat burners) and stuff like that.
Apparantly, Winstrol(stanozolol)sp, was found in Palmeiro's urine when he took the test. There isn't anything in GNC that will cause one to test positive for this, mild-hard anabolic steroid.
On a personal note, I've been taking suppliments from GNC and other companies along with a company called Advocare for about 6 yrs now, and I still do and I have NEVER failed a drug test.

HG, just one more question about steroids, a subject I bet you and your teammates are probably getting tired of!
Has there been any word filtering down about why the Union and Don Fehr haven't addressed the new penalties that the Comissioner has requested? I understand the Union might be reluctant to put into place any policy that could have a player lose a third of a season, but it seems like the Union is going to take a public relations beating because of this. And with Congress now urging Fehr to act, it seems like the Union would have no choice to agree. But we aren't hearing anything.
So is there any non-confidential info you could share about this?
Thanks

To be honest, I haven't heard much about it at all. I remember reading a recent quote from somebody in the Union and they said that they belive the current policy will work if you just give it time. I personally believe this to be true, and I think at this point all of the fans out there should feel like the policy holds no boundaries.
If MLB is willing to break the news about such a high profile player like Palmeiro on the heals of his record breaking hit, then that to me tells me they are serious.
Would I be against a new policy with stiffer penalities? Absolutely not, but I do believe that this current policy is working.

Hi HG,
As far as the enforcement goes, I was wondering if you could tell a difference between AAA and The Majors? Are all the players subject to the same amount of testing, and is it done randomly in both leagues? Is just as strict across the boards?

Its not random in the minor leagues. When they come to test a minor league team, everybody is tested other than those on the 40man roster.
They test the 40 man guys separate from the minor leaguer guys. I've also heard they send the specimans to different locations. But both are just as strict as far as I can see.

1st Situation:
Runner on first base.
A ball is hit into the left center gap and gets to the wall. The play is going to be at home, going after the runner on first.
I as the shortstop would go out fairly deep to be the first "Relay" man. The 2nd baseman would follow behind me about 15ft or so and be the "trailer" as I call it.
2nd Situation:
Runner on 2nd base.
A base hit to left field with a play at the dish. The Shortstop goes to 3rd base and the 3rd baseman or "Cutoff" man lines up for home. The 3rd baseman (playing at a high level) will usually never Relay a ball to the catcher. He will either let it go or cut it off, and make a play at 2nd base or back pick the runner at 3rd if he decides to stop.
Hope this helps,
David

Being kind of a know-it-all, like-to get-the-last-word-in, kind of guy, I am likewise grateful for the explanation. I used to use those two terms interchangably, but I now know it ain't so. In those situations, is it the catcher who almost always calls to cut it or let it go?
The other thing I was wondering, the AAA season is entering it's final four weeks, the Stingers are still leading the division, and the races are tightening up in the PCL. In the IL, they have three divisions plus a wild card, and my Indians are battling for that last playoff spot. When do you guys learn who is being called up during MLB roster expansion? No one here wants to talk about it, and I can't blame them. Would management call up say, half the group before the playoffs, and then the remainder after the minor league last games are played?

Yes, the catcher is the one telling the cutoff man to either let it go or cut it. But the cutoff man should know if the ball is offline or not.
As far as guys getting called up, the way I understand it(and I could be completely wrong) is that if a Major League team is interested in calling somebody up and they have intent of possibly using them in the playoffs, they have to be called up before Sept, 1st. You might be able to find this out.
If a AAA team is in the hunt for a playoff spot, and a Major League team is going to call somebody up as a "reward" then they might wait until the AAA season is over.
In 2000 I was on a Championship team in Round Rock. After the final game was played they announced over the loudspeaker that Morgan Ensberg and Keith Ginter were going up, so it can happen at any time.

I'm in Arizona right now rehabbing a hamstring injury that seems to want to linger around. I should be gone in a week or so, but I don't know where they are going to send me. Right now in the Angles org. we have a log jam of infielders, and recently they made some moves wanting to see younger players at higher levels. Well, I think that was just an incredibly athletic play, probably one where he was going after it with his glove and realized the ball wasn't where he thought it was, so he stuck out his bare hand and the ball went in it.
I'd be suprised if had a bare handed play in his mind from the get go, but that doesn't take anything away from the play. (I smell an Espy)

HG, I had another question to run by you. Can you speak to the role of the hitting coach? I know that you liked working with Mickey Hatcher for one, but I'm wondering if you could speak in more general terms. What makes a good hitting coach? Do they take a players natural attributes and try to refine them? Or can they completely revamp a guys swing? You sometimes see major adjustments made by pitching coaches, but we hear less of that with hitting coaches. Why is that? And is there a problem with a player who doesn't like what the coach is teaching him and who goes his own way?
Just curious...

Good question, I would say the role of the hitting coach changes from level to level. Obviously at the lower minor league levels, there is going to be much more "hands on" training. But as you climb the latter, the hitters obviously have enough talent and can hit or they would be at that level in the first place.
So, Hitting coaches at the AAA level and the Big Leagues are basically there to remind hitters of certain things that make them click. They are also their "eyes" outside of their body. Meaning, often times hitters are doing things that they can't feel or don't realize they are doing, and the hitting coaches job is to be able to see these things and work them out.
A good example for this year would be Hatcher working with Steve Finley. Obviously Fin isn't having the year he wanted to have and he's frustrated. It happens to all of us at some point. But, I'm sure Hatcher is watching a ton of video tape from years past trying to see minor things he is doing now that he wasn't doing before.
As far as hitters not liking a particular hitting coach and going his own way. It happens, not too much, but it does. Its usually a situation where a hitter has been successful with a certain style and he doesn't want to change. Hey, as long as he hits, who cares what he does?

once upon a time you mentioned that you are involved with a company that strives to improve batting technique and actual batting averages (or something like that - sorry if this is a misrepresentation).
how receptive do you believe pro teams are to new technology? are pro teams mostly old-school, or do they embrace cutting edge advances? all teams use video and such, but how much do philosophies differ? in the end, can it be said that a "top-grade" hitting coach can actually represent a few wins?

Well, I guess it depends on the club and the hitting coach. Hatcher doesn't like his hitter to look at video tape. He wants to look at it himself and then come back to the hitter with ideas.
There are many different programs out there, I'm involved with a company called Virsys (virtual systems) virsys.net is their website. But they can take video footage and turn it in to a digital image that can be rotated 360 degrees and can tell you a bunch of stuff like bat speed, weight distribution and things like that. I know alot of teams are using it, and its making its way into Japan as well.
A good hitting Coach can certainly represent wins. It will never show up in the box score, but I guarantee he factors in.

Obviously the 3B relays signs to the hitter and baserunners and in theory tell oncoming runners whether to stop at third or keep going (that's if they don't run through the sign!) , does he have any other duties?

Well the first base coach obviously doesn't have the responsiblity level that the 3rd base coach has, but first base coach is responsible for giving you the times of the pitcher to see if you can steal a base, let you know the outs and give you a heads up if a sign is put on.
I think you have the 3rd base coach covered..usually gives the signs, decides when and if to send a runner, decides if the runner on 3rd base is going on contact or making the ball go through the infield...thats about it.

Jared Weaver has alot of potential, he's a tall lanky kid that throws exactly like Jeff. I don't know if he'll be better than him, possibly. Haven't heard a word on him getting called up, since he's not on the 40-man roster I don't see it happening, but I've seen some crazy things in this game.
Kendry Morales has some very nice upside as well. He has power from both sides of the plate, below average speed, and plays 1st base only that I've seen. But he can hit. He's on a nice streak right now..30 for his last 50-60 Ab's.

How much does the caliber of play differ from AAA to AA ball? When a player gets sent down is it difficult to work on any isolated areas that need to be addressed, like getting a better stroke, footwork, etc.? Do any of your goals have timetables? You sounded tired and kind of beaten up, due to your nagging injuries. How much more do you have in the tank?

Oh, at this point I think I'm just mentally beat. My body could hold up, but my mind just needs a break. This has been a roller coaster of a year for me and I need to do something else for a while. But I'm sure after a month or so of the offseason the fire will get going again.
There isn't much difference from AA to AAA. The pitchers in AAA are probably a little more "crafty". You can still work on things, baseball is always a work in progress and I feel that I've made some strides here. My stats don't show it, but I'm basically working towards next year and into the offseason. I want to be on the right track going into the offseason so I know what to work on and can hopefully take it into next year.

How's it going so far this off-season? Are you going to play some fall ball in AZ, or just kick back and watch some football and hang with your son? You'll have to give us the scoop if you play fall ball somewhere.... :atthepc

I'm not sure if that will help or not, I tend to believe it wouldn't. I've been on 5 championship teams over the years, 4 of them in proball, and the one thing that all of them had in common was that they had fun together and were loose all the time.
Part of having a loose team that plays together and has fun, is having a fun atmosphere in the clubhouse. Every team I've every played on whether we won a championship or not had a team song. One that we played about 15 minutes before we go out to the field. And there was always upbeat tunes on throughout the day.
I have in the past had video games in the clubhouse, and I've seen those get taken away if the team isn't focusing, or it seems like the games are taking away from the task at hand.
In the minor leagues, if a team is slacking the manager might make the team take infield everyday and do alot of early work until they righ the ship.

I'm wondering if you could comment on the umpire forgetting the count in the 9th inning of the last game. Have you ever had that happen before? Jeez, those guys have those clickers for a reason, you'd think he'd use it. Also, couldn't he get help from another ump??? I imagine that your manager must have gone crazy over this situation, it's one thing to lose a game, it's another to have an ump not pay attention. Or am I being too hard on the guy?
Anyway, have a great offseason, don't be a stranger around here!

when a player signs up for winter ball is that player committed to the entire length of the season for that team?
if a team wants a player to play winter ball but the player does not want to what is the outcome?

do players have the opportunity to "work on things" or are players thrust into a "win the ballgame" situation?

This can happen more than you think. When things out of the ordinary happen, such as a stolen base, injury, foul balls, clicking the indicator may not happen correctly. That is why I keep my clicker in my ballbag and click after each pitch to keep from duplicate clicks and notch mu clicker on zero so i don't always have to refer to it.
Guys on the bases ought to have and use clickers, but often do not for whatever reason. Getting help from a partner is done can and should be done in this circumstance. Remember many of the minor league umpires are young kids and prone to make these mistakes, they are not seasoned umpires like the show or even college umpires, who tend to be quite experienced.

Absolutely unacceptable is the way I see it. No disrespect to any umpires on this forum, but give me a freakin break. This is the Texas league championship we are talking about, not some sunday beer league game.
The way the umpires handled it was like they had somwhere to go and just wanted to get the game over with. And no, there were no distractions during this AB. Nobody on base, and a couple of foul balls.
These umpires on not kids, they are for the most part in their late 20's, early 30's and are far superior to "college umpires". That is why I was so suprised by this. The homeplate ump motioned to only 1 of the other 3 umpires on the field and that was it. They should have been checking with the official score keeper, to make sure they got it right, but nothing.
I wasn't too happy with our manager either, but I guess I wasn't suprised. I was on the team for about 3 weeks, and never saw him really "stick up" for one of his players and he didn't in this situation either. Took about 3 steps towards home and turned around.
My mom was listening on the radio and taped it, she called and confirmed that in fact there was 4 balls.
Again, I'm for instant replay in situations like this. Who knows what would have happened, we had the top of our order coming up.

This depends on the contract they sign. You can sign for half a season or a full season. But often times players get released before the contract is up, but still get paid, and sometimes players leave and forfit the money.
Its the players choice to do what he wants outside of the regular season. Often times if a player has a steller year during the season, and goes to winter ball and struggles it can play against them, but it can work in the opposite as well, if the player struggled during the regular season.
Not really, if you want to "work" on things, you go to instructional league where the games don't matter.

We had over 150 games this year, and this happend only once, when it mattered most. Go figure.
Collge umpires are not even close to the caliber of a AA or AAA umpire. Often times a pro ump gets hurt or has to leave and a college guy will fill in. He looks like a fish out of water and overmatched most of the time. The pro game is completely different from the college game.

The caliber of ball in the professional levels is so superior to amateur ball. However, most college umpires are older than minor league umpires, unless it is one of those low level minors that does use some locals (The Cal League does this to augment their staff). If there is an umpire in his 30s at AA ball, he most likely is not advancing too much further.
As for as much as losing the count, that was horrible and somebody should have questioned it.
Had someone made a stink about it, the crew most likely would have checked with each other to sort it out. (Excrement)! That is done for Little League much less a champinship game for a league title.

since you brought up bonds...
after nearly one full year away from the field, and seeing fewer than a dozen full-on live pitches from scotty eyre, bonds announced that he was ready to step into the box. he just missed a first at-bat home run (something that you can relate to) and then drove one about 410' for an out to triples alley - a homerun in almost all other yards.
on sunday he hit a bullet that kent at first base couldn't even make a play on. it went right by antonio perez who was pulled around on a shift. perez was playing on the lip of the grass and the ball - never higher than 2' from the ground - was within two steps of him but was by him so fast he could not even attempt a play. even though it went for a single, it was one of the hardest balls hit that i can recall bonds smacking... and i've seen him smack around quite a few.

I can't even imagine how tough it must be to face pro hitters. I played one game at third base AT THE LITTLE LEAGUE LEVEL and didn't really feel too comfortable (or safe) standing there. I guess that's why they call it the "hot corner". I did make a pretty nice diving grab and threw someone out by a step. please explain why so many (most?) basestealers step towards the advance bag with their left foot... even though it is so much more explosive to have the right foot as the first step taken.
when stepping first with the left, the runner's body becomes almost erect; when stepping first with the right, the runner's still in a crouch position, kinda like a sprinter outta the blocks.

I don't really think you can explain to somebody what its like. I could sit here and tell you how grueling and taxing it is on your body, and there will always be somebody that say "stop crying, your playing a game".

Another question about one of the little things in baseball. Years ago you used to see 1Bmen try to block the bag on pick-off throws, by putting their foot or shin on the bag in the area where the runner would be diving back to with their hand. But that's not something you ever seen done anymore and I am curious if you know why? Would the 1bman be vulnerable to injuries? Or is it not considered good sportsmanship? It seems like a simple thing to do, so I am pretty sure I am missing an obvious reason why it's not done. :o

The Angels teach a very aggresive offensive approach thoughout the system. Meaning going 1st to 3rd is a VERY high priority. They like to hit and run, bunt, put pressure on the other team. This approach to the game comes from the Major League Manager and how he wants his system to be run. With a new manager comes a new way of doing things. Scioscia could care less if you get thrown out at 3rd for the 1st or 3rd out, where most organizations despise that.
HG, you made this comment back in May after a question from me, boy we sure saw this in action last night. Cabrera and Vlad go 1st to 2rd on flairs to the OF and eventually they both scored. Key plays in a big game and the Yanks couldn't respond. A great example of what you were talking about and how it can pay off.

Exactly, that is Angels baseball at its finest, and it got them to the next round.
In AAA this year we had one month where our team went 1st to 3rd 34 times. Needless to say, outfielders hated us and we forced alot of errors out there because they knew we were going.

We had strict guidlines to follow...Needed to give them 2 phone numbers and our address. If they call us and can't get us after 2 tries and they have not been given any warning as to where you are, then your test will be a "positive".

A very interesting comment re the automatic "positive" result. Does that mean that you are/can be automatically suspended until you attend a test. What are the implications here?
By the way, thank you so much for all the wonderful insights you are providing from a ML player's perspective.....it is such interesting reading. h-g, in last night's game, vladimir dug the ball out of the corner and heaved it to the infield. the ball went by everyone and the runner was called safe on the play at the plate. he was definitely out.
but my question is: why wasn't the second baseman out there as a relay man? he was on the infield dirt to the right of seond base, and the shortstop was very close to him.
are all throws from vlad treated as cut-off plays, rather than relays, because of his tremendous arm? 330' is along ways, man.

The only play I can remember having to do with Vladdy over throwing the infield, was the play that Quinlan backed up and threw Rowand out at the plate...he was out, not safe, so I'm probably not thinking of the right play.
As for your question...because of Vladdy's tremendous arm the relay guys will be much further back towards the infield than normal. But you still have a double cut, which was Cabrera and he is there just in case the ball is thrown over the first relay man's head. He is normally about 10-15ft behind the first relay man.

I'll just say this....Its been my experience 100% of the time over my 8yr playing career that when there is a situation with 1st base open so the batter/runner can run on a dropped 3rd strike this is what the umpire does.
If the ball is dropped, the umpired will make a NOTICABLE safe call and usually yell out "NO CATCH".
If the ball is not dropped and the umpired deems the batter out at home, he will make a slashing call with his hand to let everybody know he indeed did swing at the pitch, then he will make an out call to let everybody know that the batter is out at home plate.
The latter of which happend the other night. I'm sure the umpire knows he screwed up. I think there are a bunch of Angle fans out there wishing Instant Replay were around for plays like that.

I read an article in our paper today about Glenn Williams who was snapped up from Australia by the Braves as a 16 year old, spent 6 seasons toiling in their minor leagues, went to the Blue Jays where he spent another 5 years trying to crack the majors. This year he finally made it with the Twins, had a hit with his first at bat, followed by a 13 game hitting streak with an average of .425 then his 22 day majors career ended with a dislocated shoulder against the Royals.
In the article Williams said:
"It was definitely worth the wait and its definitely incentive to get back into the Majors. Everything at the major league level is done on a huge scale. All you have to worry about is turning up and being on time to play a baseball game. You really don't have to lift a finger. All you have to do is go out there and try and help your team win and if you can do that you'll stick around for a while. It certainly beats life in the minors characterised by 12 hour bus rides and staying in crappy hotels for 6 months"
Being a player who has experienced both the majors and the minors what are your thoughts on Williams' comments? I am especially interested in the 12 hour bus trips and crappy hotels? Is it that 'bad' in the minors?

No..its not that bad in the minors. I mean yea, there are 12hr busrides sometimes more, but thats only in a few leagues. Once you get out of low A ball you start to stay in nicer hotels and the travel is better. In AAA you fly everywhere, at least in the PCL you do. I think in the IL the cities are closer together so there short bus trips.
But Yes, in the Majors everything is on a grand scale. You don't carry your bags anywhere, in fact in Houston if you were caught bringing your bags down from your hotel room in was a $499 dollar fine in Kangaroo Court. $499 because anything $500 or more has to be reported to the press (thats what I was told, might not be true).
You travel on your own private plane and are served food and drinks from the time you get on the plane until the time you get off. Everything from Shrimp, steak ,burgers, chicken, Dove Bars, all sorts of candy, fruit, sandwiches ect. Plus all the alchohol, soft drinks ect. that you want.
You stay in 5 star hotels with your own room instead of having a roomate. You get close to $100 dollars a day meal money, plus when you get to the field you pretty much have anything you want to eat in the clubhouse and have top level meals after the game.
Hope that gives you a good idea of what its like.

Sorry to trouble you again while you are trying to spend some quality time with your family, but your response directed me to another question: You mentioned the clubhouse and I often read of a team's clubhouse. What actually does the clubhouse entail? Is it a clubhouse strictly for the players and team officials only, does it include family & friends, or alternatively is it open to fans to be able to mingle with the players after the game?
Reason I ask is that when I lived in the city I attended a lot of Sydney Kings (Australian Champions last 3 years) Basketball games and after each game we went into the clubrooms/bar where the players attended to mix with the fans. Often some of the opposing players came along as well, and they were not backward in openly talking to the fans.

The only people allowed in the clubhouse at any time are the players, coaches and front office staff. The media is allowed in there I think 15min after the game and they have a certain time before the game.

All of the players you mention have tremendous talent and in my opinion you will see all of them in the Big Leagues at some point.
Mathis is a hard nosed catcher, mentally tough and has gotten much better offensively and defensively over the past year.
Kendrick can just flat out rake(hit). His weakness was defense but he's getting much better there as well. I wouldn't be suprised if Kendrick jumped above Callaspo on the depth chart.
Didn't play much with Wood except in Spring Training. His numbers speak for themselves. Lets see how he does over a long season in AAA and go from there, but he's a great talent.
Morales is pretty darn good as well. Hits for power from both sides of the plate, and plays a good 1st base. He has a bit of a lazy attitude that has rubed some people the wrong way, but thats just the way they do it in Cuba so he has to learn the American style of baseball, thats all.
Saunders, you've already seen in Anaheim. Has a good live left arm, I've seen him hit 93 on the gun. Has good live action on his pitches and if he can stay healthy I'd look to see him out of the pen next year.

It looks like he could have crawled to second base and had the DP unassisted. Of course, when your team is behind by nine runs, you don't do anything flashy. I thought blowing the huge bubble as he jogged off the field was extremely cool.
Of course, the runner could be castigated for not even looking back on the ball and continuing to run to third. Maybe he didn't think a white guy could jump that high. Or perhaps, since he was leaning toward third and the ball was hit so hard, he'd never get back in time anyway if it was caught, so he might as well continue on to third to make sure he scored if the ball got through.

I could have gone to 2nd unassisted but I'm a team player and wanted to boost a teammate's fielding%;)
Before we ran on the field a teammate told me to do something that would make them remember me. I felt I did.

Before we ran on the field a teammate told me to do something that would make them remember me. I felt I did.Well, they move your teammate around so much, you were thoughtful to let him get a bit more accustomed to shortstop. Anyway, you handled it exactly right under the cricumstances. Running over to tag the base yourself (given the score and the fact that your momentum was not taking you that way) would have screamed out, "ROOKIE". You looked like (a) you belonged there, and (b) you'd made spectacular plays in the Show many times before and would do so many times again.
Thanks for sharing your teammate's comment. Sounds like a classy guy. Glad it turned out to be the right kind of memory. Unlike shortstop or third base (where there seem to be more chances for those slick backhand and throw across the diamond plays), it seems like at second an attempt to "do something that would make them remember" you is more likely to be an error than a spectacular play.

I don't know what the major league average is..The only time teams are concerned about is your time to first base. and the average is probably around 4.3 seconds or so.
Ways to increase that time...Find a hill with a fairly steep incline and get into a routine where you will run that hill about 5-10 times and then run a 40yrd dash on flat ground after that 5-10 times. Do that every other day for about a month and I guarantee your times will be better. You will feel like you are flying on the flat ground, and it will train your legs to move faster.
The only way to run faster is to run, and run with some resistance(hill) in your training. Mix in some strength training in the gym on your off running days as well.
Hope that helps

Zito75, the A's always have a surplus of second basemen, but then they need them because there are injuries. So, HG, if it's slow going early, get a subscription to the Oakland Tribune and wait for the openings to appear.
Then again, our other Bay Area team has an injury-prone second baseman too, Ray Durham. And Deivi Cruz as a backup? Shades of Joel Youngblood at third base! Still, wouldn't it be a hoot playing next to Omar Vizquel?
Ignore this question if it's been raised before, HG, but who's the best shortstop you've turned a double play with?

Here are two places that you might want to look at, HG:
AAA Portland Beavers; San Diego Padres affiliate. PGE Park is a classic and a good looking ballpark that has a good chunk of history to it. It's no Wrigley Field or Kauffman Stadium, but it gets the job done. Plus, it's not like the Padres have a solid 2nd bagger either so you have a shot there.
Seattle Mariner's AAA club. Like San Diego, the M's also don't have anyone solid at 2nd base, and with the team rebuilding (inspite of Beltre, Ichiro and Sexson there), you do have a shot there as well.

Any other teams you have been in contact with that you could fill us in on, or is it all confidential?
I know you're from OC, but isnt it true that you reside in Round Rock? Would you be interested in playing in the Astros organization, possibly in Round Rock to be at home. You could live at your main residence, wouldnt have to put up with hotels, cheap apartments, etc.. And you would be playing with the organization in which you originally signed. Is that an option?
Hey Gem, the Yanks have a utility opening ;) Wouldnt it be something to play with the likes of Jeter and Matsui, etc.
Lol, im just playing with ya, I remember you saying at one point last year that you wouldnt want to play here.
Hows the offseason going? Do players keep up on what's going on in baseball during the winter, or do they try to distance themselves from the game and what is going on around it during the winter?
Also, just a hypothetical, but if USA Baseball came to you and asked you if you were interested in playing for the US Team in the WBC, would you be interested? Bob Watson said in a radio interview last week that the team wouldnt be limited to Major Leaguers, but minor leaguers as well.
Sorry if any of these questions were asked.

Hey HG, now that we are in the offseason, a question that isn't related to anything you do on the field. I've always wondered about scheduling and how players know where to be and when. Do the Travelling Secretaries hand out schedules? Itineraries? Especially on the road, is it hard to keep track of being where you need to be? Obviously, missing flights, meetings etc. could kill a career faster than anything, so I just wondered how the organization works.

Hey HG, I was listening to the radio today about a discussion concerning a long time shortstop converting to second base. The expert (a very well known baseball writer) stated that the conversion was very difficult and that players like Nomar or Jeter, would find it almost impossible to make that change. He gave the example of Shawon Dunstan who told him he'd play any position on the field, including catcher, but that he'd never play second because he got all confused because of the different angles.
I know you play both positions, so I was wondering about your take on this. I think a guy like Nomar who's a pretty darn good SS should be able to make the switch just because of the natural talent that he has. But in your opinion, can you see the difficulties that was being mentioned?

Well me and my agent work together. If I know some front office people personally I'll call them. I called the D-Rays myslef..Padres, Stros and few others.
Just talked to him a few minutes ago..he's at the winter meetings in Dallas..he's going to track down the Padres, D-Rays and Marlins and Giants. Said he already talked to the Yanks, Nationals and few others. My guess is that things will start to take shape after the winter meetings when teams know where they stand with their players.
Both of those players are pretty darn good. But with Cabrerea, Kennedy and McPherson in front of them its going to be tough. They'll probably spend the year in AAA and if somebody gets hurt maybe get a shot, other than that maybe September for either of them.

Well its certainly not as easy as it looks. Going from position to position each night is a very difficult and demanding job and it takes a special talent. Viscaino(sp) with the stros does an amazing job at this, so he sticks around.
To me, Nomar has long mechanics and doesn't appear to me that he would make a good 2nd baseman that needs short quick mechanics to make the turn. I know he played a little 3rd this year and did ok but I'd be suprised if he moved to 2nd.
Same goes for Jeter...even though these guys are amazing talents 2nd base is much different from SS, so it would be interesting to see how they do.

I would say that moving from 2b to SS would be a much more difficult transition. Bobby Grich was penciled in as a SS when he signed with hthe Angels in 1977, ended up hurting his back, and returned to 2b for the rest of his career. I know that many have played 1b and 2b successfully in their careers and those were my primary positions throughout my career, and quite a few infielders did play both 3b and 1b, as Steve Garvey was a wild arm third baseman that moved and became a fine first baseman.
I would venture to say that A-Rod, Jeter, and Nomar would do just fine making a transition to 2b. You have to admire a player like Chone Figgins who can go out virtually everyday at a different position. I wounder if they ever thought of straping those catcher shinguards on him and seeing if he could do a Campy Campanaris and play one position every inning. ;)
I am sure you understand that being able to transition into different positions in this game makes a player that much more valuable to his team and organization and just may extend his carrer. You had a great spring this season and Iam sure that some club will pick you up and give you a chance. I was rooting for you when you made the big club this year and loved how you played in the ST Freeway Series and even got Vinnie to praise you play in one of those games.
Good luck and the best to you for 2006 season.

Thanks for the nice comments..I hope something opens up this year as well. At any rate..most of the time when a highschool/college kid is moved from SS to 2b when they get to pro ball, it is because they don't have the "true" mold to be a SS. Not enough arm, range ect. So they move to 2b where you don't need the arm, and the position is not as demanding.
I've seen Nomar's actions on the field. He throws from the side, has long arm actions and I just think its going to be a difficult transition for him. Turning a double play at 2nd base is not as easy as it looks when you have a 230lb man barrelling down on you wanting to rip your shins off. You need to have short actions, be quick and get out of there. All 3 are incredible talents and I'm sure they could get the job done, but I don't think it would be as easy as some folks think.
Figgins is pefect..doesn't have long actions, he's quick not overly big for a
2nd baseman but has enough arm to play 3rd and SS. Very valuable guy. should make a 2million+ this year.

HE, I'm assuming is your agent. Was AnaehimAngelsFan correct, do you in fact have Boras? If so what is he like? Seemed like a really nice guy who loves baseball and being an agent.
Yanks? Thats great news!! :D :D
I'm pretty sure I asked this before, not sure if you answered, sorry if you did. But do players follow what goes on during the offseason, or do they distance themselves from the game altogther? I know you cant speak for all the players, but i'm sure you have an idea.
Also, the Yankees today signed Chris Prieto. Chris played for the Angels last year, spent most of the year in Salt Lake. I'm assuming you know him. Anything you can tell me/other Yankee fans about Chris?
Thanks

Yea AnaheimAnglesFan is my agent, didn't you know.;) Boras does not represent me. He seems like a good guy to me. He is very ruthless, gets what he wants, pisses people off and makes a ton of money.
Players do follow what goes on..its what we do. What have to know whats going on.
Prieto is a Leadoff type of player, doesn't hit for power, has a short compact swing, draws a lot of walks and usually walks more than he strikes out. He hits and throws from the left side, Plays an outstanding defensive centerfield and is a good all around ball player.
He played something like 13 yrs in the minors before getting called up this year with the Angels for a few days. In my opinion he's every bit of the ball player Crosbey is, with less power. I think he would make a great 4th outfielder on somebody's team, and could start if needed.
Dang, that sounded pretty good. Maybe I should be a scout one day ;)

Orange HS
Every indication is that Brandon is just as billed. I was in his workout group a few times in Spring Training but thats about all I saw. What I did see was a tall lanky kid with a tremendous amount of leverage in his swing, and alot of power.
That is obviously the case so far. I'm interested to see how a Full season a AAA goes for him. The pitchers there are completely different from A ball pitchers.
In A ball, you have alot of raw arms that throw hard and don't have alot else to go with it. Control is often an issue down there. At the AAA level, pitchers are crafty and experienced, and are much smarter. They will try to make him get himself out more often, and have alot more movement and deception on their pitches.
Kenrick came up to AA and did fantastic, so I'm sure Anaheim is hoping for good things out of those 2.
Thats been my experience.

I did play in the AFL. There were some pretty good arms in the league when I was there, I don't know if that was the case this year or not. There seem to have been alot of inflated offensive numbers.
I'd say its AA baseball, but the best of AA.

But don't just do your arms. Have a sound workout routine that trains the entire body, expecially the mid section and your rotational muscles. And don't forget your legs..good strong leg are the base for hitting.

Not to mention getting around the bases in a hurry.:D Things in sports medicine have certainly changed for the better over the years, and the training regimens are truly what make today's ballplayers the best in history as a group. One of the many obstacles Jackie Robinson faced was the misconception that he was too musclebound to ever make it as a baseball player, but that was the same criticism leveled against Jesse Owens as a track star. Jbooth as far as I know has never worn a professional jock in his life yet he thinks he can tell me how it is and what it takes to hit there.
He thinks he has all the physics and scientific ways to hit perfected. The problem is there are SOOOO many other variables that come into play when you are hitting on a stage where 50,000 people are watching you and you are expected to perform.
What he fails to realize is that there are so many ways to skin a cat. Just look at the difference between Jim Edmonds swing and Pujols swing, yet they are both very successful.
Whatever you are doing during the times you are hot is what you should do. The times you are in a slump you can put the video side by side and 99% of the time they look EXACTLY the same. Its one of those other variables screwing you up(mentally beat, tired, fearful) all of which speed you thinking up, which in turns speeds the game up.
That is how small of margin there is at the professioal level and you can't possibly understand that fully until you've been there.

I just read a few short articles written by young Mr. Gem. At The Yard.Com is a site for those interested in reading about players in the minors. HG has submitted some articles and they are there for you to read, if interested.
One more thing. There are a couple of auctions on eBay for HG baseball cards. (Don't bother with his rookie card. I JUST BOUGHT IT!) :clapping
Pretty cool looking rookie card, HG.
