John "Tonight, let it be" Lowenstein
Eddie "eat, drink and be" Murray
Tony "Jala-" Pena

Most fans believe the term "Murderers Row" started with my association with the Yankees in 1920, but actually, Bob Ripley drew a cartoon calling them that the year before when he sketched a gang of big bruisers swinging clubs, labeling them "Roger Peckinpaugh, Wally Pipp, Frank Baker, Del Pratt and Ping Bodie", Bob captioned it: Murderers Row. I simply joined the "Row"

His very first one was John Mayberry RFD.

Kevin Bass requested that it be changed from Big Mouth to Small Mouth so as to not sound so arrogant.

04-10-2005, 01:24 AM
John Mayberry RFD I remember that one. "Boomer" always seem to take it to the next level. Did Berman get his nickname from being born in the baby boom 50's? I use to love his 2 minutes drill at halftime. I know he made up some of those nicknames while taping it. He's was Sportscaster of the year 6 times.

On the 9th of Feb they had a "Chris Berman day" during Bill Murrays celebrity challenge golf tournment..heres a byline

Byline: John Ryan
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. _ Chris Berman's day:
Hack hack hack hack hack ...
If you think his hands flail wildly on ESPN, you should see some of his drives.
The worst came on No. 18, when the ball took four hops on the rocks in the first 100 yards.
"I was nervous," he said Wednesday after the Celebrity Challenge. "I wasn't ready for this, to be honest with you. I'll be ready now."
He better be. Playing in Bill Murray's group, he's going to draw the biggest galleries.
End Byline

Heres some more of his name calling.

Sylvester swallows return to Campusano
Scott Little Deuce Cooper
Jody Davis eyes
Carlos in Delgado da vida
Brett Favre-egnügen
Brook Jacoby Wan Kenobi

Don't know if it was him but I remember one that *someone* said:
Octavio "Shhhh" Dotel (said in a whisper)
Does anyone know who said it or if it is his real nickname? I heard it one day and it nearly killed me!

chanceron
04-24-2005, 07:57 PM
I believe I heard Berman say SHHHH Dotel myself. I think it was last year. As far as it being a nickname ...anything goes as far as nicknames by Berman, but as a true nickname in the encyclopedias of baseball I'm don't think so. But then again my research of nicknames which is very extensive...there are no true nickname guides to really go by. Heck some of the nicknames in books today could have been something an ex-player invented during an interview.

Some of these are just so funny to read, Berman has started something great with nicknames because since the 70s or 80s nicknames have just about fell off the face of the earth. I dont know weather the players have changed so much since the old days or they just dont want to rattle the media like the players of the past. I believe in the past players were expected, when they came to the bigs, to be tagged with some nickname from the vets. But if you look at nicknames in baseball you will see that most of them were from the 60s and beyond. Sure we have had a few great ones since, but nothing like the past. It was always just part of the game. Berman in his funny kind of way is bringing them back in a comical sense.

Give credit where credit is due. Vin Scully came up with one of the greatest baseball puns of all time long before Berman created his sickening schtick after stealing it from Vin.

Scully called it back in 1964 when Bobby Wine and Cookie Rojas played the infield for the Phillies.

Said the great line '.....days of Wine and Rojas..." when setting up the line-up.

Berman is a parody of himself and should be muzzled. Hate the guy!

Give credit where credit is due. Vin Scully came up with one of the greatest baseball puns of all time long before Berman created his sickening schtick after stealing it from Vin.

Scully is the man no doubt....one of the greatest of all time...but Berman has earned his spot in baseball lore with his ability to excite and delight the listener. Plus I think he's gave people alot to think about as far as name calling...In the last 10 years or so, there have been alot of books pertaining to the loss of nicknames through the years and the joy the fans received from knowing these nicknames when baseball was more than just a business....
Heres a little tidbit of Chris Berman
Most of his nicknames are used exclusively by him, but one creation, "Crime Dog" for Fred McGriff (a play on McGruff), has entered mainstream usage. When the show had a change in executive producers in 1985, Berman found out that he was no longer allowed to use his now famous nicknames. After receiving many letters protesting the decision – which included support from baseball player George Brett – the brass at ESPN relented and Berman was soon back to using the nicknames.

He began his broadcasting career as a student at Brown University in the mid-1970s. In the early years of ESPN, he anchored SportsCenter, which he does occasionally (such as the program's 20,000th and 25,000th shows and two "old school" editions on August 11 and 12, 2004 with Greg Gumbel and George Grande respectively.) In a medium dominated by NFL references, Berman's frequent mentions of American Football League players and history have earned him induction to the American Football League Hall of Fame.

Back in the day, O.J. Simpson was part of football lore and history, a true Hall of Famer. Now he's a pariah and caricature of himself.

Same thing with Berman. He's become a buffoon who is now more reviled than respected by TV watchers. He's part of the reason that ESPN is so easily and justifably panned by critics. His schtick of spraying spit on people through the TV screen has become annoying and offensive.

I take the easy way out. I zap him right between the eyes with the remote anytime he appears in the vicinity.

chanceron
05-30-2005, 07:15 PM
In that case I won't mention back, back, back, back, back, gone or use any nicknams that Berman (Butch Oil and Wynegar) created while you're reading this Berman thread (by the way the remote doesn't work here). To keep mentioning (Duane Psycho Ward ) nicknames that the Bambino of ESPN sportrscaeters created would be senseless.

Yes OJ has reached the bottom (where he belongs) but Berman with be enshined in alot of fan's mind as a creative and quick thinker and a fresh change from the simple boring announcers that have come and gone before him. When on TV I would think showmanship plays a big part of it all. I wonder if he did this one "on the fly" ....John "Stick It In" Urrea ... ROFL

Here are some more the fat man.

I just don't get that one.

I'm going to take a guess that the actual nickname is Carlos "One if by land, two if by sea, and three if" Baerga. This would be a play on the old "Paul Revere's Ride" poem. My guess is you are supposed to read it as "three if by air-ga")
Of course since he said it was his favorite of all-time, maybe he's right and I am wrong

KingSwisher

We all started out that way. You'll come around eventually and end up being a Berman hater like the rest of us.

It was funny for awhile, then got slowly cloying and ultimately offensive. You're probably giving nicknames to everyday people in your life right now. That's the final stage. You'll embarrass yourself one day when you let slip with one of your made up nicknames for your boss, or clergy, or mother-in-law in front them and it will be all over.

Berman violated all decent sports fans when he pooped out Brandt "Patience of" Jobe during the US Open golf championship. The man has no shame or self control and we are a legion of people that must put a stop to it.

We have your spot in the army reserved. Carry on soldier.

Borrowing from Colin Mochrie, let's not forget Juan Pierre " 'Cause my bladder's empty"

And you can use the body's systems for Joe "Respira" Torre, or Joe "Excre" Torre.

We can do pretty much anything with Ron Cey.
