I wonder if they are the same Biscuits I saw last year. My wife and I were on vacation in eastern/central Tennessee. We just happened to go by a minor league park and the Biscuits were in town. We enjoyed a great game

Why in the world would they name a team the Biscuits?

Here's what their co-GMs had to say about that...

According to Megan Frazer, general manager of sales and marketing, "Biscuit recipes in the south are family traditions. We felt the name would touch everyone in their own personal way. Everyone loves to eat biscuits and the community has really embraced the name."

Greg Rauch, general manager of operations: "There is a long history of people in the South eating biscuits. We felt that the name “Biscuits” would be quirky and different. We thought it would be a fun name for a Minor League Baseball team. It is a name that can reach all segments of the population. Everyone eats them and they touch everyone in some way. We will even have syrup and biscuits available to eat at the park for our fans!"

Glad to see the local team get noticed for some play on the field, as the name was the only thing drawing any attention last year!

The 'Skits will be in Carolina in the first part of may. They seem to have a pretty good team for being Biscuits, they still make alot of mistakes in the field, but have talent to make up for it so far. I expected Delmon to be the one-man wrecking crew, but he hasnt been the lone ranger at all. Plus, they are a tough group, and have a few arms to go with the bats.

I was glad to hear Jim Tocco put me onto this topic here, I didnt think there would be much interest in this team, but it just goes to show you everything is on the net now.

Game time is 7:30, so point your computer speakers outside and have a fine warm evening outside and do the cookout thing and listen to Biscuits Baseball!

Yes you can. Make a batch of homemade biscuits, and then freeze them. Then spray a throw away aluminum tray with PAM (tm) or other non stick veggie spray, add frozen biscuits.

Cook meat first, getting the grill hot and smokey, then after removing cooked meat, put tray of biscuits in and close the hood.

Then in about 5 minutes, you have to turn the biscuits to stop overcooking on one side.

another 5 minutes and there you go...

Biscuits with an outdoorsy flavor from the grill, I ate 5, with a hot dog, a brat and a mini-burger, one with honey, one with butter.

From the great outdoors, and your biscuit maven....

04-22-2005, 06:18 AM
Thanks for the welcome Diana, I hear Jim talk about you during games, you must be one of the biggest 'Skit supporters there are!

Here its called RiverWalk Park officially, but I am here to say, most locals refer to it as "River-FRONT Park", without realizing thats a totally different place!
The park itself is really nice, and now that the grass has taken it looks like a real field. Last year it had a serious sod-line pattern! The wall in the outfield is covered in great old-style signage, including a Mary B's Biscuit ad. The curved wall in right is very odd to me, and looks like a tough position to play at times. However it is right in front of the berm of cheap seats, and Delmon must get more than his share of time to talk with the folks there.

The train is a neat part of it, and adds alot of great feel. The thing is, when the train isnt there, its not noticeable at all, but when there is one, it seems like it is a part of the wall in left.

The new scoreboard was put up in the visitors bullpen, but still isnt really that visible from the 3b side. Niether is the big board in center, so the best seats are actually (for me) on the first base side, so one can see what happens in the home dugout, bullpen, AND on the scoreboard!

Seems we have done pretty well against the Ms. Braves. With the way the schedule is worked, the Montgomery Nine should have an easy cruise into the playoffs if they can just keep a steady pace thru the first half! The team is really solid, and I notice they are getting really good relief pitching, as well as starting. Seems that X Hernandez is doing a great job as pitching coach.

Oh, and then theres the hitting. Plenty of that going on too!

DianasMoon82

To: Imapotato

The Biscuits are probably the hottest team in AA right now. Not because of the name, but, for their current play. I would not be suprised to see a few of them be with the Devil Rays very soon. That is what the Biscuit Buzz is all about.

To: DriftersGM

I would have to say that I am not the biggest 'Skits fan, that would be people like Montgomery Man and EZ, or for that matter the season ticket holders.

Now, if you qualify your remarks to say the Biggest Biscuit fan in Illiniois, I might have to agree. Due to work obligations, I miss most of the live games, and am thankful they (most of the time) archive their games so I can play them when I get home (but do catch the Mon/Tues games live usually).

Speaking of which, I am considering doing a Biscuit Bus to go to Montgomery sometime this summer, so if any of you Midwest Biscuit fans are interested, drop a line here (can you say Road Trip?).

MONTGOMERY - The Carolina Mudcats shut out the Montgomery Biscuits on the strength of starter Josh Johnson’s 7.0 innings. The Biscuits had only 3 hits in the contest. It was the first time the Biscuits have been shut out this season.

The Biscuits were set down in order five times in the loss.

Jason Cromer and Josh Johnson faced off in the contest. Cromer got off to a rough start, allowing six Mudcats to score in the first three innings. Cromer suffered his second loss of the season, going 5.0 innings (9 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO). Johnson shut out the Biscuits in his 7.0 innings (3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO) and earned the win.

Jeremy Hermida hit a solo home-run off the scoreboard in the first inning for the Mudcats.

Todd Sears hit a 2-run double to highlight the Mudcats 3-run third.

Juan Muniz hit a 2-run homer in the fifth to add to the Mudcats lead.

The Mudcats extended their lead with a five-run eighth off Biscuits reliever Sam Walton. Chris Ashby and Robert Andino each homered to highlight the Mudcats scoring in the inning.

The Biscuits will take on the Mudcats on Autograph Day at Riverwalk Stadium at 7:05 in the third game of this four-game series. Scott Autrey (1-3, 7.91) will take the mound for the Biscuits. Carolina will counter with Scott Olson (2-0, 3.05).

MONTGOMERY - The Jacksonville Suns scored three runs in the ninth to overcome a one-run deficit and beat the Montgomery Biscuits 4-3 at Riverwalk Stadium Monday night.

Biscuits reliever Jose Diaz came on in the ninth to attempt his first save of the season in the 2-1 game. Diaz ended up blowing the save and earning the loss by giving up three runs (0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO). The scoring was highlighted by Derrick Michaelis’ bloop RBI single and two bases loaded walks.

Alvis Ojeda was the winning pitcher. Ojeda pitched a scoreless eighth (1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO). Glen Bott pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

The Biscuits attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth but fell short by a run. Johnny Raburn hit an RBI double but Fernando Cortez flew to left to end the game with Raburn stranded at second.

Biscuits starter Brian Lockwood and Suns starter Eric Stults faced off in the contest. Lockwood went 5.2 innings (3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) but had a no-decision in the contest. Stults went 6.0 innings (8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO) and also had a no-decision.

Shawn Riggans hit a home-run in the fourth to give the Biscuits the early lead.

The Biscuits scored a run in the third inning on Fernando Cortez’s RBI double.

Delwyn Young lead off the third with a home run for the Mudcats.

MONTGOMERY - The Montgomery Biscuits beat the Jacksonville Suns by a final score of 8-4 on Grand Slam School Day Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Biscuits scored three more runs in the sixth when Delmon Young hit a 2-run single and Chairon Isenia hit an RBI double.

Biscuits hurler Chris Seddon had his best start of the season and earned the win by going 6.0 innings of shutout ball (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO). Suns starter Chad Billingsley, the loser, struggled, allowing 5 runs in his 5.0 innings (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO).

Wednesday, the Biscuits and the Suns will play the rubber game of this 3-game series. Brian Stokes (0-0, 0.00) will take the hill for the Biscuits. The Suns will counter with Jonathan Broxton (1-1, 2.89).

Biscuits catch Mudcats, 8-5

ZEBULON, N.C. - The Montgomery Biscuits took the middle game of a three-game set from the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium Saturday night, outslugging them, 8-5.

The Biscuits crashed 15 hits in the game, but the North division-leading Mudcats kept it close by erasing three separate Montgomery leads.

Montgomery scored in the first inning when Delmon Young and Chairon Isenia smacked back-to-back, two-out doubles. The Mudcats tied it with a second-inning sacrifice fly by Chris Bass that scored James Shanks.

Isenia gave Montgomery the 3-1 lead with a one-out, two-run homer by Isenia (his fourth). In the bottom of the same inning, Carolina got its own one-out, two-run homer from Jeremy Hermida (his league-leading ninth).

Ever-resilient, the Biscuits scored two more in the fourth on a groundout by Mike Curry and a double by Fernando Cortez. But the Mudcats evened it in the fifth and knocked Montgomery starter Jon Switzer out of the game. Switzer got a no-decision.

The Biscuits' bullpen was devastating the rest of the way. Josh Parker allowed an inherited runner to score but threw a scoreless inning and earned the win. Native North Carolinian Carlos Hines threw 1 1/3 perfect innings and North Carolina State alum Chad Orvella pitched two scoreless to earn his fifth save.

Montgomery added its final three runs in the sixth (Raburn RBI single), eighth (Brent Butler solo homer) and ninth (Young RBI double).

The rubber game is Sunday afternoon at 1 Central time. Montgomery righty Brian Lockwood will start.

I was at this game last night, keeping score for an independent stats company I work for in my spare time. Heck of a game. Young is really a player - made a great throw from right to nail a Mudcat at the plate. For a while it looked like we might have a rain delay, but things held out OK. There was a large contingent ofBiscuit fans down the first base line in the bleachers. I'm assuming they were local people since Hines is from the area and Orvella is an NC State grad. BTW - How tall is Orvella? He looked like a midget on the mound. Also, by any chance is Brent Butler the son of Brett Butler. It seemed like there was a physical resemblance (although Brent showed a lot more power last night than Brett ever had.

REPORT:

Young's homers power Biscuits to 8-4 win
May 8, 2005

Delmon Young slugged two late home runs to help lift the Montgomery Biscuits to an 8-4 victory over the Carolina Mudcats Sunday at Five County Stadium.

The Biscuits took a 6-4 lead in the seventh on Young's three-run blast to right off reliever Mike Flannery. Young, who went 4-for-5, padded Montgomery's lead with a two-run shot to right from the other side of the plate in the ninth off closer Chris Resop.

Carolina did all of its scoring in the fourth inning on two-run homers by Jeremy Hermida and James Shanks. Hermida, who also homered on Saturday night, leads the Southern League with 10.

Michael Curry homered in the third and Chairon Isenia hit a sacrifice fly as part of a two-run fifth to get the Biscuits within 4-3. Isenia leads the league with 29 RBIs, while Young is in a three-way tie for second with 25.

Biscuits reliever Brian Henderson (3-0) allowed one hit and struck out five over three innings.

Ryan Baker (0-1) took the loss for the Mudcats, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out one in one inning.

The Biscuits (17-13) became the first team this season to win a series against the Mudcats (21-8), knocking them out of first place in the Northern Division for the first time all year.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Try as they might, the comeback-inclined Jacksonville Suns could not surmount a four-run Montgomery Biscuits lead in the bottom of the ninth inning at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Biscuits (18-13) hung on for a 7-5 win in the first game of a four-game series.

The game was 4-2 in favor of Montgomery entering the last inning, but Montgomery tallied three insurance runs which proved to be important. They scored on a bases-loaded single by Delmon Young (one run, on his fourth hit of the game) and a two-run single by Gabby Martinez.

In the home half of the ninth, the Suns knocked out three straight hits against Biscuits reliever Josh Parker, who departed with one run in, two on and the tying run coming to the plate. Closer Chad Orvella allowed an infield RBI single but retired the next three to earn his sixth save.

Montgomery trailed early, after the Suns scored one in the first and one in the second against Biscuits starter Chris Seddon. But Montgomery tied it in the third on a two-run, two-out single by Shawn Riggans and took the lead on a solo homer by Brent Butler in the sixth (his third).

The homer was the end of the line for Jacksonville starter Eric Stults, who gave up eight hits and three runs in six innings and took the loss. Seddon, on the other hand, pitched into the seventh and departed after allowing a solo homer to Tydus Meadows.

Carlos Hines pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Biscuits in the seventh and eighth.

Montgomery hung four runs on Jacksonville reliever Luis Gonzalez, who had not previously allowed a run.

Game two of the series is Tuesday, with Biscuits righty Brian Stokes (0-0, 0.00) taking on Suns lefty Derek Thompson (0-1, 4.21). Game time is 6:05 p.m. Central time.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Montgomery Biscuits trailed 7-0 after three innings at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Thursday night but rallied to send the game into extra innings. The Suns scored in the 10th, however, to wrap up an 8-7 win and split the four-game series.

Biscuits starter Scott Autrey lasted only four innings, giving up three runs in the first, one in the second and three in the third. He surrendered 11 hits and all runs were earned.

The Biscuits plated one run in the fifth inning, which is all they managed against Suns starter Jonathan Broxton. The rest of the runs scored against the Suns' bullpen.

Montgomery scored one in the seventh but left the bases loaded.

In the eighth, the Biscuits went unconscious. 10 hitters came to the plate, scoring five runs. Two scored on a Fernando Cortez double, one on singles by Chairon Isenia and Rico Washington and the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Shawn Riggans.

In the 10th, a throwing error by Biscuits shortstop Johnny Raburn led to the winning run scoring against reliever Josh Parker.

The Biscuits return home to face the Huntsville Stars at Riverwalk Stadium on Friday night. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive duffle bags courtesy of Knology, the official communications provider of the Biscuits. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., and Montgomery righty Brian Lockwood will pitch.

Sorry fellow 'skits fans, been out of action for a day or two due to technical problems. Looks like we took one on the chin today, but look, we still have the bottom to play yet, just hold the lead till the break, and we will be there!!!

A funny story begins here:

Mrs. Tocco (Jims Mom) sent me a couple of Magnet game schedules. I put one my fridge, the other on the ice machine at work (a liquor store).

A Gent walks in with a Carolina Mudcat shirt on while I am behind the counter, I said, "That is a Carolina Mudcat, we don't serve your kind around here, pointed at the Biscuit Schedule, this is a Biscuit store (was just kidding)"

Remember this is south central IL. Well far away from the Southern Leauge.

This gent said, "Oh I was just visiting (he thought I was serious)".

I said no, we let MudCats in here too, then I explained I was kidding, and we talked Southern Leauge for a bit, we laughed, he bought his beer.

Just a lake visitor, to our town, from NC, thinking the bass were hitting.

This is for you Mark, a Mudcat fan, we agreed that baseball is that thread that defines you sometimes more than anything else.

Just don't wear that tee in Biscuit territory, I told him.

He took his 18 pack of Bud Light and left, saying, "I bet we can bake Biscuits!!!, Seeya tommorrow!!!"

It was too much fun....

I like the Biscuits because of their funny logo. I am not sure if I am really a fan. But when I saw this thread about them I was very surprised. I have read a lot of negative remarks about their nickname and logo. And then I am a strange guy. I start to like them more.

I will go to the US Thursday 14th of July, but I will visit the West Coast. Maybe one day I will come to visit the East coast.

I will try to buy a Biscuit home cap. I really like it.

The pictures that Dianasmoon82 showed us are awesome. It is a great job that HOK has done to build it around an old train station.

yankees rule --
you can easily buy a biscuits cap online - biscuitsbaseball.com ck out their online store 'the biscuit basket'.
(you must have access, that's how you hear the games - right?)

the name of the team IS catchy, quirky, and gimmicky. what could be more southern american than biscuits? but apparently there were many folks in the city of montgomery who originally balked, and many who said they'd never be caught dead wearing yellow t-shirts. ha, guess what - on opening day last year the stands were FULL ...and it was nothing but a sea of yellow and the town LOVES their 'skits.

the photos of riverwalk stadium that diana posted were actually from my camera taken by my husband when we visited jim in montgomery last april. (yes, we are jimmy t's parents). i was unable to get them sized properly and could not post them myself. she kindly offered to do it so i emailed them to her.

Maybe a dumb question. I have looked on the Biscuits website, but I couldn't find him. Who is Jimmy T?

BTW the nickname is far better than those "aggressive" names like Warth Hogs, Muckdogs, Bombers, Intimidators etc.

Just a few suggestions from me, the 3rd best 'Skit fan in IL:

1) It is better to have two in the booth. (I understand the $ thing though).

2) Dump Live 365, get a dedicated server for 'Skit ball, instead of jumping through hoops via one or two radio stations, that won't dump a game for Rush Limbaugh...

My take is that you have a potential world audience...

That is the selling point, the ad rates increase... for the game

You have IL, IN and now it seems Netherlands, as well as overseas troops...

Go Skits!!!!!! the second half arrives... :clapping :clapping :clapping

It is my very sad duty here on the Biscuit board to inform you of the passing of our thread starter Diana Mayfield, aka DianasMoon82. :(

She was taken away from us way too soon at the tender age of 23 from ovarian cancer.

Diana loved the Biscuits, and she was the one who turned me on to them.

When I won the trivia contest a few weeks ago,it was Diana who gave me the idea for giving the tickets that I won to the local Boys and Girls Club of Montgomery.I remember the both of us feeling really good about that, having some young kids going to a ball game on the 2 of us.

I remember her e-mailing radio voice Jim Tocco describing me as a poor misguided soul. When I heard that,I just burst out laughing. :laugh We had a good time with that.

She was a fan of the team, and wanted them to do well. :gt

My heartfelt condolences go out to Diana's family, and all here friends here.

I will do my best to keep you updated the rest of the way on the Biscuits.

Thank you Diana for everything you have done for me,and everyone here on the Biscuit board.I will never, ever forget you. :(

You will be missed.

Good Night Diana.

James Shields went 8 innings for the win as the 'skits rolled over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx by a 9-0 score.

Shields gave up 5 hits and struck out 5 in his outing.

Gabriel Martinez and Luis Mateo each went deep for the 'skits.

Every Biscuit starter got at least 1 hit in the game.

Who listened to last night’s game?

What a hoot. It was a re-creation, 1921 style. Jim tocco and brad tiller announced the entire game – sight unseen. They did it this way – jim and brad were in the radio station in Montgomery while janelle k., asst. media coordinator, was actually at the game in Birmingham watching in the booth and reporting the game to tocco and tiller. They had props – piece of wood, a bat, a glove – to make it sound like they were actually at the game to their listening audience. This is true 1921 style. Apparently back then there weren’t the means for visiting announcers to be at away games – financially or technologically. They spoke of president harding, the 1919 scandal, commissioner lander, uniforms without numbers. their jargon included ‘’nifty’’ instead of ‘’cool’’ and ‘’frankfurter’’ instead of ‘’hot dog’’. the commercials were without music and done by the two of them. Even the crowd noise had heckling, ‘’kill the ump’’ and ‘’peanuts, cracker jacks, here’’. The biscuits were the ‘’rebels’’ and the Birmingham barons were the ‘’baron coal jacks’’, I think.

What an enjoyable, humorous presentation. The play-by-play was real and it was an exciting game. Tied in the 9th the game goes to extra innings the ‘skits take lead in the top of the 10th by scoring 3 runs, only to be beaten by the barons who scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 10th – chisox, you gotta help me out here.

That was only for the one game. The Suns do that, and another day with "Jimmy Buffet" style jerseys which are auctioned off at the end of the game as a fund-raiser for local charities. The normal jerseys are the sleeveless style with SUNS across the chest. Just to let you know. I may be a die-hard Suns fan, but you gotta love any team called the "Biscuits"! Good luck in the second half!

Last night the Biscuits outhit the Tennessee Smokies, but still lost 11-6. Probably they hit at the wrong moments.

MONTGOMERY – The Tennessee Smokies (1-0) slugged four home runs and took advantage of five errors by the host Montgomery Biscuits (0-1) to coast to an 11-6 victory at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium. Miguel Montero, Jesus Cota, Jamie D'Antona, and Alberto Gonzalez all homered for the Smokies, who overcame three different deficits early on before blowing the game open with a five-run fifth inning off of Biscuits reliever Yorkin Ferreras.

Gabriel Martinez and Wes Bankston both homered in the losing effort for Montgomery. Bankston's shot was a mammoth two-run blow in the third inning that cleared the scoreboard in left-center field, giving the home team a short-lived 4-2 lead.

Tennessee tied up the score in the next frame with two unearned runs off Biscuits starter Andy Sonnanstine, capitalizing on two-out errors by center fielder Jason Pridie and third baseman Bankston, and setting the stage for their enormous rally in the fifth that gave the Smokies a convincing 9-4 lead.

After a Bankston RBI double and a Ryan Christianson RBI single in the bottom of the fifth brought Montgomery within three, Tennessee put the game away. Another Bankston error led to the 10th Tennessee run in the seventh inning against reliever Jean Machi. In the eighth, Montero closed out the scoring with a solo home run off of reliever Mike Prochaska.

Montgomery actually out-hit the Smokies 15-13, with Martinez and Elliot Johnson collecting three hits apiece. However, the errors by Bankston and Pridie as well as one each by Martinez and leftfielder Aneudi Cuevas were too much to overcome.

Clint Goocher (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Adam Bass to earn the victory, combining with Bass and three other relievers to fan 11 Montgomery batters in the game. Ferreras (0-1) shouldered the loss, recording only two outs in the fifth while surrendering five runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman.

Montgomery and Tennessee play the second game of their season-opening five-game series on Friday night at 7:05. The Biscuits send right-hander Tony Peguero to the mound against Smokies right-hander Garrett Mock.

The Montgomery Biscuits (1-1) rode the strong pitching of Tony Peguero and three relievers to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Tennessee Smokies (1-1) Friday night at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium. A day after the Smokies put 11 runs on the scoreboard against Biscuits pitching, Peguero limited the Tennessee lineup to a pair of runs over six strong innings.

Jeremy Owens and Gabriel Martinez each homered to provide all of the offense Montgomery would need. For Martinez, the towering drive to right field marked his second home run in as many games.

Owens' second inning roundtripper off of Tennessee starter Garrett Mock gave the Biscuits a temporary 2-1 advantage. After the Smokies tied the game in the top of the third on an error by leftfielder Aneudi Cuevas, Montgomery took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on a Wes Bankston RBI groundout.

Martinez's seventh inning blast added an insurance run, and that was all Peguero and relievers Jose Rodriguez, Jeff Ridgway, and Juan Salas would need.

Peguero (1-0) did not walk a batter while striking out three to earn the victory. Closer Salas set the Tennessee side down in order in the ninth, fanning two, to record his second career save. Mock (0-1) takes the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in six innings of work.

The Smokies and the Biscuits play the third game of the five-game series on Saturday night at 7:05. The pitching matchup pits Montgomery's Jim Magrane against Tennessee righthander Steven Jackson.

Biscuits starter Jim Magrane hurled six innings of shutout baseball and Michael Coleman broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer as host Montgomery (2-1) whitewashed the Tennesse Smokies (1-2), 4-0.

All of the Biscuits' runs, including Coleman's roundtripper off of Smokies starter Steven Jackson, were scored with two outs.

Magrane and Jackson matched zeroes until the bottom of the fifth inning. An Elliot Johnson leadoff single was followed by groundouts by Jason Pridie and Wes Bankston. Coleman then laced the first delivery from Jackson deep over the left field wall for his first home run in a Biscuits' uniform.

Montgomery tallied solo insurance runs against the Tennessee bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings, thanks to two-out RBI singles from Jeremy Owens and Ryan Christianson respectively.

In the meanwhile, Jim Magrane and relievers Brian Henderson and Jose Rodriguez continued Montgomery's mastery over the Smokies' lineup that had begun the night before. Including Friday's 4-2 Biscuits' victory, Tennessee has not scored in 15 consecutive innings.

Magrane (1-0) picks up the victory, striking out four and walking one over his six innings of work. Jackson (0-1) takes the loss, walking three and fanning six to go with his two runs allowed in five innings.

The Smokies and the Biscuits play the fourth game of the five-game series on Sunday at 2:05. Montgomery sends young lefty Chuck Tiffany to the hill to oppose Tennessee righthander Russ Ohlendorf.

Wes Bankston and Matthew Maniscalco came through with early RBI singles and four Montgomery pitchers limited the Tennessee lineup to just three hits as the Biscuits (3-1) defeated the Smokies (1-3), 2-1 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.

After winning 11-6 on Opening Night, the Smokies have tallied only three runs in losing the next three games.

Each team squandered scoring opportunities throughout. Montgomery out-hit Tennessee by a staggering 13-3 margin, but the Biscuits left 11 runners on base. The Smokies drew seven walks, including four in the first two innings against starter Chuck Tiffany, but left nine runners on the basepaths.

Tiffany worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and stranded two more runners in the second. He would settle down to retire the side in order in both the third and fourth innings before he was removed because of a high pitch count.

The Biscuits' only runs came in the bottom of those third and fourth innings. First it was Bankston drilling a single up the middle off of Tennessee starter Ross Ohlendorf to score Jason Pridie from second base, plating the game's first run. In the fourth, Maniscalco came through with a base hit to center, driving in Gabriel Martinez.

Pridie, Maniscalco, and Martinez each collected three hits in the contest, with Martinez improving to 9-for-13 (.692) in 2006.

Tennessee's lone score came on an RBI single by designated hitter Miguel Montero in the top of the fifth off of reliever Jeremy Flanagan.

Flanagan (1-0) worked two innings in relief of Tiffany to record the win in his first appeance of the season. New acquisition Marcos Carvajal followed him with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Juan Salas finished the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up his second save. Ohlendorf (0-1) suffers the defeat, allowing the two Montgomery runs on 10 hits in six innings andwalking one batter while striking out six.

The Smokies and the Biscuits play the finale in their season-opening five-game series on Monday at 7:05. Chris Flinn gets the start for Montgomery against Tennessee's Micah Owings.

Hi there Montgomery man. Nice to have you around. Can you tell me/us a bit more about the games, stadium, athmosphere? I have seen some pictures of Riverwalk Stadium and I must say it is a great stadium. How is it to be there?

It's great! I'm going to record the next game I go to, which is very soon, so I'll show you that, too.
The atmosphere is electric. Everyone is smiling, cheering, and the smell of philly cheesesteaks and biscuits fills the air. Tunes and films play on the jumbo screen often and the personally selected songs for each player reminds you who's hitting. The chairs are very comfortable, too!

The beautiful night sky and glowing AmSouth building and often the moon watch over the field. Passing trains offer a unique feeling of relaxation and excitement as they trek past the field. You can also walk all the way around the field, even watch the home runs, which Riverwalk stadium is famous for, fly right over you.

The train station built into the concession area is very interesting and adds another dimension to the park. It's painted dark green, so it fits in well.

Just seeing and hearing "Biscuits" everywhere raises your spirit. :)

Thanks Montgomeryman. One baseball wish of mine is fulfilled already: To see the Yankees play. One of my two others, to see a game at Riverwalk probably will never be. But who knows.

BTW the Biscuits won their sixth straight by beating the Jacksonville Suns 5-0.

The Biscuits are leading their division by 2.5 games.

MontgomeryMan: My son lives in Auburn and has driven over to some Biscuit games. He always has a great time and is very impressed with your ballpark. This comes from a fellow who grew up going to the Hoover Met, including the famous Michael Jordan year of 1994, and is tall praise indeed! Brownie31

I'm glad he enjoys it and keeps coming back! I'm a season ticket holder for the Auburn basketball games and I attend many of the football games. I plan on attending Auburn University very soon myself. :)

It's amazing. The Biscuits are suddenly on a tear! So happy to see a winning record up there and our names on top.

Biscuits will prevail!

Looking to match their longest winning streak in franchise history at seven, the Montgomery Biscuits (6-2) saw their momentum come to a screeching halt at the hands of the Jacksonville Suns (3-5) in a 6-1 defeat on Thursday night.

Suns hurler Heath Totten held the Biscuits scoreless over six innings while Chin-Lung Hu keyed an early rally with a two-run single to provide Jacksonville with all of the offense they would need.

Montgomery starter Jim Magrane entered the evening having thrown six shutout innings in his first start of 2006, but it did not take long for Jacksonville to break through. A four-run second inning, including Hu's two-run base hit, gave the Suns the quick lead.

Justin Ruggiano added to the advantage with a two-run single of his own in the fifth.

Montgomery's lone run came after Totten was pulled from the game before the seventh inning. Gaby Martinez, the Southern League's top hitter in multiple categories entering the day, greeted new reliever Casey Hoorelbeke with a triple. He would eventually score on a Matthew Maniscalco groundout.

Totten (1-0) earns the victory, limiting the Biscuits to just four hits over his six scoreless frames. Montgomery's final total of six hits was their lowest output in a game this season. Magrane (1-1) suffers the loss, allowing only the four runs in the second in his four innings of work.

The Biscuits look to return to their winning ways in the fourth game of the five-game series on Friday night at 6:05 pm CST. Montgomery will send young southpaw Chuck Tiffany (0-0, 0.00) to the hill against Suns righthander Joel Hanrahan (0-1, 1.93).

Bad night for me. Yanks losing 5-1 and the Biscuits lose a close one 4-3.
Does a team deserve to win when it is making 5 errors?

I have listened to a radio broadcast of last night's game. This annoncer was boring. I almost fel asleep.

The Montgomery Biscuits (6-3) took the Jacksonville Suns to 12 innings at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Friday night in a 4-3 loss that fittingly ended on a Biscuits error.

Relief pitcher Yorkin Ferreras' fielding error allowed Justin Ruggiano to score, ending a game in which the Biscuits comitted five errors and the Suns left 16 runners on base.

Before 9,251 fans -- the most ever to see a Biscuits game -- Montgomery tralied, then led, then saw the lead slip away and escaped a nearly impossible jam just to send it into extra innings.

With the score tied at three in the ninth, a single, a throwing error by pitcher Brian Henderson and an intentional walk led to a bases-loaded situation with no outs. Henderson induced a groundout from Jacksonville third baseman Andy LaRoche, one of the league's best hitters. Montgomery native Craig Brazell then grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Biscuits starter Chuck Tiffany (0-0) threw 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. He got one run of support on a fourth-inning home run by catcher Ryan Christianson but trailed when he departed in the fifth inning.

The Biscuits got Tiffany off the hook in the sixth when shortstop Matthew Maniscalco hit a liner to left with two on base. Right fielder Justin Ruggiano dove and missed, and Maniscalco scampered to third with a two-run triple.

Ruggiano atoned for his peccadillo in the eighth, however, with a solo home run off of Biscuits reliever Jose Rodriguez to tie the game.

This was the second game in which the Biscuits comitted five errors. The club's 16 errors lead the league by four.

The Biscuits and Suns meet in the series-deciding game Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. CST. Biscuits righty Chris Flinn (0-0, 4.50) will throw against Suns right-hander Spike Lundberg (0-0, 2.25).

Last night the Biscuits were beaten at home by the Huntsville Stars4-1.

Greg Sain's two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie and propelled the Huntsville Stars (6-5) to a 4-1 victory over the host Montgomery Biscuits (6-5) in a Sunday matinee at Riverwalk Stadium.

The defeat extends the Biscuits' losing streak to four games, following a six-game winning streak.

For six full innings, Montgomery starter Andy Sonnanstine and Huntsville starter Carlos Villanueva matched zeroes on the scoreboard. In the top of the seventh, Stars left fielder Drew Anderson led off with a single to center. Sain, the designated hitter, fell behind in the count 0-and-2 before crushing a line drive over the leftfield wall. It was his third home run of the season.

The Stars added two insurance runs in the eighth, thanks to an RBI single from Callix Crabbe and a run-scoring groundout off Anderson's bat.

The lone offense for Montgomery came in the bottom of the eighth when Michael Coleman drove in Elliot Johnson with a fielder's choice. The Biscuits had numerous other opportunities due to collecting eight hits and a walk in the game but stranded eight men on base.

Villanueva (2-1) earns the victory for his 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and walking one while fanning seven Montgomery batters. Joe Winkelsas recorded his second save of the season by retiring the Biscuits in the ninth. Andy Sonnanstine (1-1) suffers the hard-luck defeat, striking out a season-high 10 Stars hitters over 6 2/3 innings.

Montgomery will attempt to right the skid in the second game of the five-game series at 7:05 on Monday night. Righthander Tony Peguero (2-0, 1.50) will toe the rubber for the Biscuits against Huntsville righty Tim Dillard (1-1, 6.30

Biscuits win two sloppy games in Mississippi

PEARL, Miss. – Although they committed nine errors in the two games, the Montgomery Biscuits registered two wins over the Mississippi Braves Saturday night, winning 5-4 and 6-4.

The Biscuits and Braves resumed Friday night's suspended game with two outs in the eighth inning and the Biscuits leading, 4-2. Although they needed just four outs to win, the Biscuits' infield botched three custom-made double play balls in the ninth inning and sent the game to extra innings. Third baseman Wes Bankston was guilty of his ninth error, while middle infielders Elliot Johnson and Matthew Maniscalco made their first.

A Jason Pridie single would win the game for Montgomery an inning later and earn a win for Juan Salas. The Biscuits' closer had, through no fault of his own, blown his first save of the year.

It was Montgomery's third game of the season in which the club committed five errors.

Although the Biscuits committed four more gaffes in game two, it was Mississippi's mistakes that proved more costly. The Braves were tagged with three errors in a four-run third inning for Montgomery. It gave the Biscuits a temporary 6-0 lead that they were able to hold despite more ugly play in the field.

The Braves chipped away with a run in the third inning and another in the sixth. Montgomery starter Tony Peguero (3-1) left after that inning and would eventually earn the win, becoming Montgomery's first pitcher to win three.

In the seventh inning, the Biscuits' infield committed two errors on one play, leading to another run for Mississippi. Then in the eighth, First baseman and 10-year Major League veteran Eddie Perez launched a solo home run to make it 6-4. With the bases loaded, Jean Machi came in for the Biscuits to strike out Matt Esquivel and pitch a scoreless ninth inning. The Braves left 12 on base in the game.

The wins gave the Biscuits a three-game winning streak and kept them tied with the Jacksonville Suns for first place in the South Division.

When the series resumes, Montgomery starter Jim Magrane will face Mississippi righty Francisely Bueno Sunday afternoon
