Among those who went to San Francisco, did any ever come back to New York to play or coach or manage a New York team?

Whitey Lockman, Danny O'Connell, Daryl Spencer, Ray Jablonski, Willie Mays, Hank Sauer, Valmy Thomas, Ed Bressoud, Andre Rodgers, Ruben Gomez, Johnny Antonelli, Curt Barclay, Al Worthington, Stu Miller, Marv Grissom, Ray Crone, Mike McCormick, Ramon Monzant, Jim Constable, Pete Burnside, Gordon Jones, Bill White, Jackie Brandt, and Paul Giel were all members of the 1957 New York Giants who made the trip west.

Don Mueller was traded to the White Sox, Ozzie Virgil and Bill Taylor to Detroit, Ray Katt to the Cardinals, Foster Castleman to Baltimore, and Steve Ridzik to Cleveland before the start of the 1958 season.

Dusty Rhodes, Gail Harris, Bobby Thomson, Wes Westrum, Jim Davis, Joe Margoneri, Max Surkont, Windy McCall, and Sandy Consuegra all retired rather than go west with the Giants.

Of course, Willie Mays came back to New York to play with the Mets, 1972-73.

Dusty Rhodes, Gail Harris, Bobby Thomson, Wes Westrum, Jim Davis, Joe Margoneri, Max Surkont, Windy McCall, and Sandy Consuegra all retired rather than go west with the Giants.

In your opinion, were these men all at the end of their careers anyway? Or, in an ideal situation, do you think that any of them would have continued playing if the team had stayed in New York?

Thomson still played for three more seasons after that. He didn't retire until after 1960.

Dusty Rhodes did not retire. He appeared yet again as a Giant in San Francisco in 1959.

Windy McCall found himself out west...he currently resides in Tucson, AZ. I just met him today and had to look him up to see who he was.

Of course Jackie Robinson was sold in the off season from the BK Dodgers to the NY Giants but decided to retire rather than play for the SF Giants franchise.

Jackie was traded to the Giants following the 1956 season and retired rather than play for the New York Giants in '57. The Giants moved to San Francisco following the '57 season.

Wes Westrum went back and forth. He was released as a player on December 18, 1957 -- but he made the transition into coaching and later returned to New York with the Mets. From baseballlibrary.com:

After coaching for San Francisco from 1958 through 1963, Westrum was involved in the only trade of coaches in major-league history, going to the Mets for Cookie Lavagetto. When Mets manager Casey Stengel broke his hip during the 1965 season, Westrum replaced him and remained at the helm through 1967. He managed the Giants in 1974 and 1975, finishing third in '75.

Ed Bressoud (1966) and of course Willie Mays (1972-73) also became Mets.

New Yorkers won't. Sadly, he was only a shadow of his old self in New York with the Mets. He badly misplayed a ball in the WS.
When Joan Payson, a lifelong Giant fan , was awarded the new NL franchise in NY, her dream was to bring her favorite player back home . This dream was fulfilled when Willie came back to The Big Apple in 1972.
