View Full Version : Which team won the WS in the year you were born?

Not a very original thread. On NYYfans.com they have posted it as well.
But a nice thread in my opinion though.

I'll take the first shot.

The Cards won in 1967. The Cards have never been my favorite team. Not that I hate them, but I have never rooted for them.

At least my oldest daughter can say she was born in a year the Yankees won (1996), though she doesn't give a damn about baseball. :( :(

Oops! I forget to mention my other daughter. She was born in the first year of the Yankees' threepeat at the end of the nineties. And luckily she wants to play softball :dance :dance :dance

I am very curious about your posts.

1953-the New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 2. Another "Subway Series". (Wonder if this had any influence on my being a railway enthusiast? ;) )

Highlights include George Shuba of the Brooklyn Dodgers hitting the first pinch-hit home run for the National League in World Series history.

For all the details, try:

I won't give the year, but it shouldn't be terribly hard to guess when I tell you that the team that won the WS that year was the Philadelphia Phillies.

Sorry Yankee Fans, the team that won the series when I was born was the Pirates and Bill Mazeroski (in)famous home run and Tony Kubek taking the ball off the throat.

Other events:

Rome Olympics

Kennedy defeats Nixon (thanks to the dead in Chicago)

50th start put on the flag on July 4th
(I was one of the few that was born under the 49 star flag, most were born under the 48 or 50 star flag, and the few born before 1912 had 46 or even less stars).

Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Sr. is governor of California. he is the father of current Oakland mayor and former Gov. Edmund G "Jerry" Brown, Jr.

The Washington Senators (first in war, first in peace, last in the American League) move to Minneapolis-St Paul and become the Minnesota Twins.

The American League decides to expand two more team, Washington gets a new club and the AL moves west and the Los Angeles Angels are born and take the field for the 1961 season.

1965- Los Angeles defeated Minnesota in 7 games.Sandy Koufax shut down the Twins in Game 7 at old Metropolitan Stadium.

Game 7 was the only time in that Series that the road team won.

Koufax did not start Game 1 in observance of Yom Kippur.

Walter Alston became the 1st NL manager to win 4 WS titles(1955,1959,1963,and 1965)

1964-St. Louis Cardinals

Last year of the baby boom and the Yankee dynasty.

Best thing about that year for our family: My dad got out of the army August 15th, three weeks before the Gulf of Tonkin Bay resolution, so he just missed having to go to Viet Nam. History repeated itself when I got out of the reserves a few months before the Gulf War.

Not my year, but...just three days earlier, Koufax also shut out the Twins.

My second favorite memory of that Series:

When Alston came to the mound to take Drysdale out after he'd been shelled by the Twins in Game 1, Big Don said:

"I'll bet you wish I was Jewish."

Priceless.

Brooklyn Dodgers - I was born in the latter portion of 1955 (Meaning on November 20, 2005, I'll be 29 for the 21st time).

But the Dodgers never were appealing to me.....I was born 89 miles southwest of St. Louis. I never really lived there (that was my father's home) - I primarily grew up on the outskirts of Denver. But Dad was a Cardinal fan, and his dad was in the old St. Louis Brown's org. at one time - thus, my NL team was the Cardinals and AL team the Orioles. But in 1955, both teams were pretty bad (St. Louis 68-86, Baltimore 57-97). However, the Cardinals and Orioles did produce two rookie third basemen who would later become my favorite players (one's a HOFer, the other should be, and both won MVP's the same year - 1964). Kenny Boyer and Brooks Robinson.

That's interesting, I had never looked into that. I was actually born 10 days removed from the yankees clinching their 21st WS, beating the Dodgers. Maybe I could become a Yanks fan now that I don't have a team anymore.

I was born the same year Pete Rose collected his 3,000 hit while the Yankees walked away with there second straight World Series Win. The Year was 1978. May 1st, 1978 to be exact.
My Son was born on September 6th, 2004. A month and a half later, the Red Sox won there first WS since 1918. I like to think that my son's pure baseball spirit helped the cause.
My Wife was born in 1982, The year of the Cardinals WS win, so putting my little family together, we got some pretty good baseball history between us. Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals. Not bad.
