View Full Version : Second Favorite Team

You can tell by almost everyone's moniker, avatar, or sig line who their favorite team is but who is your second favorite MLB team you root for? I know many don't have a second favorite but if you had to choose who would you follow?

I'd have to choose between the White Sox, Athletics, and Devil Rays. I've been following the Sox longer so I'll vote for them.

I follow the Red Sox more than any other (non-Yankee) team, and I like most of the guys on that team (with the notable exceptions of Schilling and Ortiz). I watched a lot of Tigers baseball growing up, so I have a soft spot for them. But I'd probably have to say St. Louis. My favorite teams of all time were the Gashouse Gang Cards of the 30's, who featured my favorite all time player (Pepper Martin) and my favorite all time pitcher (Dizzy Dean). I loved Vince Coleman and the Herzog Cards of the 80's, and though I for some reason can't stand Scot Rolen, I like the current team (would like them more if Ankiel pitched there). So I go with St. Louis.

I thought I was ready to move on to the Chisox but it just doesn't feel right. There are other factors aswell, such as my stubborn pride. I refuse to pay $$ to MLB to earn the rights to online audiocasts.
I can either quit on MLB, or jump on the Yankee bandwagon, since I get a local station just across the border in upstate NY and I get WCBS clearly at night.
I'm really lost right now, I like baseball too much to just ditch it but I'm not sure I can adopt.
I had been frequenting this sight much less lately, but it's getting warmer and in recent days I've been posting more. I'm starting to miss baseball. Baseball has a pretty tight grip on me and the idea of listening to Yankees baseball on a daily basis isn't as repulsive as it once seemed.

Next to the Yankees I have had three other favorite teams.
The Expos
The Braves
The Mariners
In the early nineties I admired the Braves because they build a team out of their own farm system. Other teams can take that as an example.
I have always had a soft spot for the Expos and Mariners.

Great idea for a thread!!
I'd have to go with the Cardinals- they've got the tradition (1882-present), the integrity (many of their stars evinced it, as have their loyal fans), and the success (20 pennants, 9 World Championships)- not too shabby for a non NY, midwest/relatively small city franchise. I also am a big fan of Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds and company, in addition to the Cardinal historical heroes.

It's tough no matter what happens...You and your fellow Montrealers (is that right?) may consider just becoming baseball fans. You could also visit thte Brooklyn Dodger forum, asking how forumers there felt about baseball when their team left. It would be interesting seeing how they'd followed it, despite seeing their familes' and friends' beloved palace/castle of many years being torn away right their very eyes. :ughh
While I've never experienced this and can't personally relate, I'd be devastated if the Yankees ever moved, and can at least try my best as a baseball fan to relate to you guys, as I've tried doing here under CE and in the past under BBF's Expos forum. I can only try.
Yeah, it can be tough. There's the NY Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators, Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston/Milwaukee Braves forums for teams which have ceased to exist. You may try asking how they've felt.
If you'd like, I could also post something here, asking for fans of other teams how they'd felt about the loss and how they followed baseball. Or either of us could do so in the individual team forums.

I started following both the Red Sox and White Sox from afar. Now that the Red Sox have won a World Series, I'll be following the White Sox more intently.

Since the Phillies usually spend most of the time making me mad, I root for the Orioles because there not that far away and I hate the Yanks and the Sox, and I usually root for the success of the Expos/Nationals despite them being in the Phils' division. I'd like to go down to RFK this year to see a Nats game.

Behind the Orioles, I'm always rooting for whatever team is playing the Yankee$...I'll now have to transition from feeling sympathy for the vagabond Expos to at least some positive feelings for the Nationals.
It was always the Expos. And now that they are gone, I have to get a new NL team. I think I'll make it the Cubs, only because I have been rooting for them to make it to the World Series for years, if only just to experience it (like I rooted for the Red Sox for the past number of years when the Jays were eliminated from contention, although now that they've won it, I could care less for them)

Thanks for the concern Mattingly. I remember a while back, Jackie42 told us things really won't get any better, there will be days where you just get depressed again. That's been happening to me every now and then during the winter months.
From what I can tell, most of the BRK. fans have casually adopted the Mets. Not out of true love for the Mets, but just to follow a team in particular and MLB with it. I think that may be what happens with me and the Yankees.
By the way Mattingly, 'Montrealers' is correct. Trivia: Montrealers in french is 'Montréalais'

Back in the days of the big ugly satellite dishes, I could get CBC but not NESN, so I fell into the habit of rooting for the Blue Jays in their glory years in the early '90s. I rooted for them when they weren't playing the Sox, and the same holds true today.
Other AL teams I have a soft spot for: The Royals, Detroit, and in a way the Rays, because I hope they become an established and respected team. In the NL I like the Pirates (Bill Mazeroski for President!) and the Cubs, and always hold a place in my heart for Montreal, and sadly wonder What Might Have Been.

Growing up I became a Giants fan, and then when the A's moved in, actually closer to where I lived, I went to a lot of their games. Fortunately, they happend to be pretty darn good at the time, so I was lucky to go to 3 straight WS because of them. Plus, I used to take my bride to be to A's games when we first starting going out, because she's a diehard Dodger fan and ther was no way she was going to go to Candlestick!! So the A's were a nice compromise. you can say that in a way we have a mixed marriage!
But the Giants have always come first for me, despite the greater success of their across the bay rival.

Always liked the Orioles since Boog, Brooks, Frank Robinson, and expecially Earl Weaver. I'm no fan of the station to station, wait on the three run homer style of ball that he advocated, but it suited his team at the time, and who am I to argue with success. Now that Sammy is with Baltimore, I have extra incentive to follow the orange birds, particularly after acquiring Javy last year. Problem is with coverage, exactly two Orioles games were broadcast here last season, and Javy was taking the day off for one of them, so I'm hoping for a little more exposure in '05. The Red Sox were my second team until last season; sort of that kindred spirit thing among Cubs fans, but all that has changed. I get a charge out of the Boston idiots, and I still like the sound of "World Champion Boston Red Sox," but I don't like any team repeating, so they've moved down my list. My AAA IndyIndians are now affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and I remember how the "We are Family" gang was so good, and so loose, and just looked like they were playing for the love of the game. Clemente is still a legendary figure in my books; second only to Jackie Robinson, and was the first Latin ballplayer inducted into Cooperstown. I like NL ball much better than the junior league, and that abominable DH bastardization of the rules is only worthwhile as a distinction between the two, but I still had to vote for Angelos team as my #2 after my beloved losers. Maybe they'll meet in October sooner than anyone would guess. Great thread, BTW, made me stretch these little grey cells a bit, and sort out head from heart in order to reply.

Damn them Indians anyway. I grew up in Northeastern Ohio ... rooting for The Cleveland Indians when they were completely horrible. But .. they were so horrible that in my early baseball years ... looking for definition, understanding and a GOOD team to root for...
The Cardinals ... '82. That plugged me in forever. Although they haven't won since ... they've still been fun to watch. Whatever happened to Whitey ball? That DEFINITELY won't be the case this year.
The Indians are looking to return to the days of old. Let's see how long it will take all that young talent to mature on other ball clubs.

I always liked The Reds ... but ... they never really grabbed me. Maybe it was Marge Schott. Dunno.
The Tribe is offensive to fans who love the team. I don't think I have completely healed from how they abused us by trading all of our favorite players and coaches (Hargrove was great in those days). Vizquel to The Giants closed the lid on that bunch of great players.
I guess you can only get so close so many times until you have to start over with a new plan. But, I don't trust Shapiro ... and I'm not liking what he has been doing thus far.
Millwood? Maybe the no-hitter went to his head. Maybe Hafner, Martinez and Boone can give him some needed run support. THey have some good young starters ... but, the bullpen doesn't seem to be so strong. My guess is that they end up over .500 but ... only by about 10 games or so.

Yes ... I'm thinking around 86-76 ... if the bullpen can stay strong. I don't think they will have much issue in scoring runs ... but, the pitching has got to be strong. Well it was always the Expos, but now they're gone, so where to turn. I'm not knocking the Nats being there, but I haven't been able to grow an attachment for them, so where does that leave me for a 2nd favorite? Well, certainly in the NL (that's the nice thing about Baseball is a quick ability to pick an essentially non-competing franchise as an alternate rooter!). I'd have to say the Reds. I like rooting for underdogs at times, and the Reds would fit this well. Good long tradition, and let me not forget they "gave" us Frank Robinson, propelling the O's to the next level in '66. I certainly would not have been a fan of ol' Marge, but heaven rest her hopefully atoned soul.
As to the Expos fans that are looking for a team to root for, why not the O's? After all, Petey was the main deterrent to the move of the franchise in the first place. And besides, he loves taking any evidence of the "Baltimore" identity away from the club, leaving them to be anyone's O's to adopt as their own! :laugh

The Oakland A's are #1 while the New York Yankees are #2. Catfish Hunter, my boyhood hero, spent the first 10 years of his career with the A's before moving on to New York where he played the last 5.
Even before then, however, I had a great admiration for the Yankee history. It probably started when I saw "The Pride of the Yankees" (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6303597874.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg) starring Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig when I was a boy. How ironic is it that the same disease that took Gehrig would claim Catfish? :(
I have to say that I do not care for the competitive imbalance as it now exists. Wealthy teams like the Yankees can load up on high-priced free agents every offseason while the A's have to trade away star players before their contracts expire or see them leave for free agency with nothing in return but an amateur draft pick. That issue definitely needs to be fixed.
