View Full Version : Which BALLPARKS have YOU seen a game in?
I've been to Wrigley and US Cellular. I've also seen a Spring Training game at Ho Ho Kam Park in Mesa. I went to a minor league game at 5th/3rd Park in Grand Rapids Michigan. I may also be the only one here who's ever seen a baseball game at Petrakis Park in Dubuque, Iowa, home of Loras College baseball. I am going to the Great American Ballpark to see the Cubs and Reds on July 18.

mikeq1023 - I see in your post that you have been to the Polo Grounds. Was that when the Mets were using it, or back to the Giants? Curious as to how long ago it was. I saw the Polo Grounds in 1962 when my dad took us to New York, but never got to a game there (I was 11 at the time).

Also would like to point out how the mighty Tampa Bay Devil Rays took 2 out of 3 from the Kane County Cougers, err the White Sux err Sox.

I can't remember if I posted on this subject or not. So here goes. It's a short list.
Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field. Use to go to 20-25 games a year back in the 70's. I saw 2 World Series games including game 3 of the 1975 series. That was the game where Carlton Fisk and Ed Armbrister had the collision at home plate and Fisk threw the ball into center field. Big arguement ensued.
Three Rivers Stadium. Reds lost.
Fifth Third Field - Dayton, Ohio. I have a 10 game package and great seats. First row, Upper deck, right behind home plate.
Vero Beach, Florida. Saw a Dodgers spring training game there when I was around 10 years old.
I can't believe I haven't been to the new Cincinnati park yet. But, I'll get there.
I also saw three games at Crosley Field.
I finally made it to GABP in Cincy last year. Great seats. Third row behind the Reds dugout.
Wanted to go see the Richmond, Ind Roosters play this year but they moved to Michigan. So much for that.

I'm unlucky, I've only been to Fenway Park and each time the Sox have lost
And if you want to stretch things a bit, I've technically been to games at Braves Field to watch a Boston University football game...Even if it's not a baseball stadium any more it's still partially standing and still serving as a sports venue ;)

I have been to Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, Olympic Stadium in Montreal and Riverfront Stadium in Cinci.
On a sad note I twice went to see the Expos in their last few years, both times in April, and it was at least 85 degrees F in the stadium, the air felt artificial, the lights were odd and hurt your eyes. There were only a handfull of fans at one game (great fans though) and at the other game they had a good turnout unfortunately they were so unprofessional as to only accept cash at the ticket counter. They had 1 bank machine (yes one!!!!!) There were maybe a hundred people in line at it. We got there 15 min before game time and didn't get in until the middle of the 2nd inning. There was about 26 000 fans at that game and I would bet 10000 of them missed at least an inning or more because of the poor planning. No wonder the team left.

Welcome aboard! Hope to hear more from you, for instance your impression of any or all the ballyards on your list. Old Municipal was a great place for a game, and many Indians fans liked it when there were only the most devout fans in the stands. No lines at the restrooms, concessions, or gates, and the sounds of the game were seldom interrupted by non-baseball noise. The only game I went to there, perhaps 5000 or less people made the place seem like our own private club.

Dodger Black and Blue: Fantastic! :clapping I hope you and your dad have a great trip. I'm retiring next year, but my wife can't for another four. We have been planning such a trip for several years. So I hope in 2011 to make the trek and see all the parks that are in use then. BTW, I did actually go to Forbes several times as a teenager. It was a neat park, but PNC does a mighty fine job of replacing it. Three Rivers was OK, but it just didn't have the "baseball feel" of Forbes and PNC.

Well, my personal list of ballparks is embarrasingly short, but they couldn't be more different!
MLB
Skydome (sorry "Rogers Centre"!) in Toronto
Minors
Jacksonville Suns ballpark (beside Alltel Stadium)
The skydome would be amazing if only they could find some people to come sit on all those blue seats in there! :crazy
Memorial Stadium
Home the Orioles dynasty, with almost all the crowd behind home plate and down the lines. Most of the outfield wall had no stands behind it. The sharply angled outfield corners directed balls back in the direction of centerfield, meaning triples were improbable.
Oriole Park at Camden Yards
The first of the "retro" stadiums, and probably still the best. Integrated into the tourist-y, convention center of town, this stadium's most compelling features are the block-long warehouse behind the right-field wall housing team offices, the plume of smoke behind the same wall from a busy barbecue stand, and the raised bullpens. (The latter is a feature I'm surprised hasn't been copied.) The architectural perfection of this park was compromised by the large electronic scoreboard ownership deemed necessary for the modern fan -- y'know, the type that needs instant replay because they don't pay any attention to the game in progress.
RFK Stadium
While more renowned as the former home of the football Redskins, RFK was designed primarily as a baseball stadium. While modern amenities are lacking, the site still boasts easy access from highway or subway, ample parking, and as of this writing a team seventeen games over .500 despite being outscored for the year.
Turner Field
Another new-retro ballpark, with more respectable power alleys than the rest of the Fenway-wannabes, meaning you might get home before midnight. This stadium sorta sits out by itself on the airport side of Atlanta, and right now lacks the sort of busy downtown scene you might think a new stadium would inspire. A good portion of the old Fulton County Stadium wall still stands in the parking lot.

RWS - I'll take PNC Park as of this writing, but will defer judgment on Camden until I make it there. Never made it while my daughter was living in Silver Spring. Visited her in the spring, temperatures were WAY below normal (like 38 degrees at game time), so watched the O's on TV. Went back in the summer, and the O's were out of town. :(
I'll make it some day, but it'll cost more now, because my daughter has moved again, and there's no place to stay for free! BTW, PNC doesn't have an elevated bullpen, but it has the side-by-side bullpen. I don't think any other park has that, either.

I have personally umpired games in:
Chavez Ravine - HS baseball sectional finals
Blair Field - Big League Regionals, HS sectional finals
Epicenter - Celebrity Softball game prior to regualr game and an exhibition games
Chicago Cubs ST site on Catalina Island - now used by Avalon High's football team and I officiated a Sectional Playoff football game there.
Several other sites in So Cal were used by major league (and old PCL) teams from time to time during spring training and today are municipal fields used by local college, high school, and youth teams.

Add Bank One Ballpark. The kids loved it better that the Ravine. Good ballpark, Camden is better. Nice retractable roof, my main comment is that the inside has many "jagged" lines, the upper seats in the upper deck are quite "up there." Overall, ejoyed my experience at the ball park and parking was so much better than the Ravine.

Yeah, Tinker. I actually got to see Kerry Wood pitch there back when Orlando was the Cubs affiliate.
Canal Park is really nice, it was actually one I left off my list initially by mistake. I've been there three times now. I would have to say that Dayton's 5th/3rd Field is probably the nicest, but Charleston, SC is very nice too.

Haven't been to a lot of minor league parks, but Dunn Tire Park (fka Pilot Field) in Buffalo is a great park. I also like Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. They really did a nice job of fitting it into the location they had. And of course I'm partial to College Stadium (nka Russ Diethrick Stadium) in Jamestown, because I have been going to games there for 40 years, and played many games there, too.

Dodger Stadium
Jack Murphy Stadium
Petco Park
Candlestick Park
Anaheim Stadium and
renovated Angel Stadium
Bank One Ballpark
Coors Field
Minute Maid Park
Ballpark in Arlington
Camden Yards
I really enjoyed Camden Yards and Coors Field, but as the new parks go I really like Petco Park. The Western Metal Supply Building is incredible.
However, I will always enjoy Dodger Stadium the most because of the feel of the game. All the things I like about it are going the way of all the other "entertaining" parks, but just a few years ago you could go to a game, take the radio, listen to the great Vin Scully, hear the organ play (not that awful hip-hop), watch the cars swirl around the stadium, cool off in the offshore breeze, and enjoy an over-priced Dodger Dog.

Just wanted to update my list. I finally made it to GABP in Cincinnati yesterday. Had great seats. Third row right at the end of the Red's dugout. The seats were expensive. $60 a pop.
Enjoyed the game but it was very hot. Must have been close to 100 degrees close to the field. I spent a good part of the day pouring cold water over my head.
A beer was $4.75 at the concession stand but $6.00 if you bought it from a vendor in the stands. I did a lot of walking.

I'm going back to GABP on the 21st and have front row seats behind the visiting dugout. I thought all these seats were sold to season ticket holders. Any one know why they would be available? Not complaining. Just curious.

Can't believe I've never posted here:
I'm kinda young, so it's not much, but here it is:
Saw games in:
Skydome
Camden Yards
Tropicana Field (Better then Skydome with the roof closed)
Doubleday Field (Hall of Fame game a few years back)
Silver Stadium, Rochester, NY
Frontier Field, Rochester, NY
Dunn Tire Park, Buffalo, NY
Sorta saw games in:
Cracker Jack Stadium (Orlando, in the Disney facility. Walked by and peeked between some bars during a later inning, the Orlando rays were playing at the time. Only saw a pitch or two then left)
Drove by:
Exhibition Stadium (post-Blue Jays)
Legends Field (I almost vomited at it's over-doing of the fact that the Yankees play there in the spring)
Memorial Stadium in Baltimore (Was getting ready for demolishment)
Bowman Field, Williamsport, PA
The Little League World Series Complex in Williamsport, PA

Syracuse P & C Stadium
Binghamton Stadium

Savannah, GA ( A ball )
Toledo, OH ( both the old and new parks of the Mudhens )
Nashville ( Home of the Sounds )
Memphis, ( both McCarver & Autozone-home of the Chicks & Red Birds )
Jackson, TN Pringles park.....west TN Diamond JAXX
Lexington, KY (The Legends )
Evansville ( once home of the AAA Triplets )
Major league
Tiger stadium and Comerica in Detroit
Fenway in Boston
Both versions of white SOX park in Chicago
Wrigley in chicago
RFK in Washington ( Senators )
Oakland....
Sicks stadium..home of the Pilots
Candlestick...(froze my butt off at night in july )
Cleveland...both stadiums
Busch stadium.......
Metro dome in Minnesota
Both Crosbly and Riverfront in Cincy.......
Polo grounds....never went in....my pop drove us by it, about a year or
two before the METS ankled it..and it was torned down..
I was lucky to see a lot of older parks...some are not longer with us..
and some like RFK, and Tiger Stadium, are living on borrowed time.
Some of the newer parks are great..and some, are lacking.....
two of my favorite parks are still Tiger Stadium..and The REDS original park.
which was only a 6 hour drive from Detroit..once a year-pop would drive us
to cincy...wasn't much of a fan of riverfront...haven't seen the Great american park, that replaced Riverfront..have heard mixed reviews on it.

Major League:
Astrodome: First Major League game, May 14, 1971 (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B05140HOU1971.htm); Astros 2, Cardinals 4, Bob Gibson got the win (was a seven-year-old Cardinals fan from Arkansas at the time).
Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium: Too many to count from 1986 on. 15-20 games/year from 1987-1991, 8-10 games/year 1992-1996
Turner Field: 3-5 games/year 1997-present, including the very first exhibition game against the Yankees in March 1997
Kingdome: May 15, 1994 (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B05150SEA1994.htm) (23 years plus 1 day after my first MLB game), Mariners vs. Angels
Fenway Park: August 11, 1998 (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B08110BOS1998.htm), Red Sox vs. Royals.
Wrigley Field: September 9, 2001 (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B09090CHN2001.htm) (2 days before 9/11), Braves vs. Cubs
Minor League:
Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR; Arkansas Travelers: many, many games as a youngster in the 1970s, and a few more as an adult. Still my favorite. Watched Al Hrabosky, Bob Forsch, Keith Hernandez, Larry Herndon, Garry Templeton, et al. play for the Travs. My favorite was Hector Cruz (Jose's younger brother), who hit 30 or so HRs for the 1973 Travs (http://travs.com.ismmedia.com/ISM2//MultimediaManager/154.jpeg) (check out the very young Keith Hernandez in the front row). That same year, I saw one of Denny McClain's disastrous outings in his comeback attempt with the Shreveport Captains -- lasted less than an inning, gave up five or six runs. Ugly.
McCormick Fileld, Asheville, NC; Asheville Tourists: one of my top 3, along with Ray Winder Field and Engel Stadium. My wife's family is from Asheville, so I've been to many games here in the last two decades. We even had a "rehearsal dinner" here the night before our wedding -- my dad got to throw the ceremonial first pitch.
Hershel Greer Stadium, Nashville, TN; Nashville Sounds
Bill Meyer Stadium, Knoxville, TN; Knoxville Smokies
Durham Athletic Park, Durham, NC; Durham Bulls: the old one
Engel Stadium, Chattanooga, TN; Chattanooga Lookouts: God, what a ballpark. I absolutely loved this place and was really bummed when the Lookouts built BellSouth Park
BellSouth Park, Chattanooga, TN, Chattanooga Lookouts: the best thing I can say about it is that is wasn't built with public funds
Riverside Stadium, Harrisburg, PA; Harrisburg Senators: saw Vladimir Guerrero playing RF for the Senators in mid-July 1996, while on my honeymoon. Was also the night after my wife took a positive pregancy test, about three weeks after our wedding :clapping
Municipal Stadium, San Jose, CA; San Jose Giants
AutoZone Park, Memphis, TN; Memphis Redbirds: great new ballpark, and gets bonus points for being a park you can take a vintage streetcar to. Last game I attended here, Memorial Day weekend this year, the bullpen catcher for Oklahoma City flipped my son a ball when he finished warming up the next pitcher.
Fifth Third Ballpark, Grand Rapids, MI; West Michigan Whitecaps
Fox Cities Stadium, Appleton, WI; Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
Other:
Rickwood Field (http://www.rickwood.com), Birmingham, AL: an amazing experience; where else can you actually walk out onto a field where practically every great ballplayer of the first half of the twentieth century played at one time or another -- and do it for free?
Doubleday Field, Cooperstown, NY; also on my honeymoon (is my wife great or what?).

Interesting Reading.... The Polo Grounds has shown up a few times, THAT would have been a fun place to see a game ----- so unique.
I've been to
Busch Stadium, been there too many times to count, including 5 World Series Games, Lou Brock Day, and Bob Gibson Day.
Camden Yards -- only twice, but they were Ripken's 2130th game to tie Gherig, and 2131 to break the record. I guess I picked 2 good ones.
Wrigley Field -- My dream as a kid was to throw a Cub Homer back onto the field during a Cardinals Cubs game......
Shea Stadium
Yankee Stadium
Great American Ballpark in Cinci
Kaufmann Stadium in KC
Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta
Riverfront in Cinci
The Vet in Philadelphia
Geez... Four of mine no longer exist!!
Also, The Superdome in New Orleans -- I saw an exhibition game there, just before the season began, between the Yankees and Red Sox in 1993 or 94
Minor League
Victory Field in Indianapolis (AAA)
Bush Stadium in Indianapolis (AAA)
Wherever the Greesboro Bats play, in NC

I agree with the user who said this is a great topic! But my question for those who have seen a game in both Ebbets Field and Dodger Stadium is How do they compare? I've heard many compare the inside of Ebbets to Fenway. Is this true?

To answer your questions about OUR Ebbets Field. First, there is absolutely NO comparison of OUR Ebbets Field with that piece of land known as the Chavez Ravine....NONE!!! Having spent time in that place, I can tell you it is quite obvious that it was built with that intention.
As for OUR Ebbets Field and Fenway Park.....both these parks were built within a year or two of each other, as were a few of the other demolished parks. Having spent a considerable amount of my life in OUR Ebbets Field and a fair amount of time in Fenway, I can tell you that I have always felt that Fenway came the closest to OUR Ebbets Field. With the exception of the upper deck (that WE had at Ebbets), the inside of Fenway has many of the same features of OUR Ebbets Field.

I have been to every MLB stadium currently open.
I have been to 40 MLB stadiums all together. I started this escapade in my last year of college 1991, and as the new parks opened I went to them obviously, after seeing its predeceesor as well.
My least favorite: was Olympic Stadium(did get a foul ball there, saw Randy Johnson pitch)
Best Nostalgic feel: Tiger Stadium felt like I was walking the concourse with ghosts
Biggest letdown: Yankee Stadium( moved to outfield for better view of game)
Favorite park: Camden Yards, but it was one of my first 5 parks, and it endeared me to the old retro ballparks.
Best thrill at a game: Meeting Ted Williams at Tropicana Field in the concourse, with maybe 5 other people at Wade Boggs day after his 3000th hit.Wife wanted cotton candy and I did not have the camera with me, although I took shots of him on field during ceremony. Never so happy my wife sent me to get something any more than that day. Big Thrill!!
My Top 5:
Camden Yards
Wrigley Field (the bars are great aroung Wrigleyville)
Fenway
Minute Maid Park (grew up going to the Astrodome, so I love the new pad)
PNC Park& Safeco (tie) PNC is gorgeous:Safeco- Is my New Hometown team the last 3 years. Great ballpark on Sunny day in the summer here in the Pacific NW

The first MLB game I ever saw live was at Yankee Stadium in 1987.
I've also been to Old Comiskey Park, New Comiskey before it was Cingular (CHISOX), Wrigley Field (CUBS), RFK Stadium (NATS), Petco Park (PADRES), and Tropicana Field (DEVIL RAYS).

First, let me congratulate you on a very nice, well done site. Wish I had close to your ballpark experience. Having said that, I hate to disagree, but your ratings appear to be subjective to me. You write about several aspects of each park, but from your perspective. Of course, I don't really see how it could be done any other way. Regardless of how objective one tries to be, it all boils down to YOUR OWN impression of things. Even if you give a number rating to each element, as many have done, it still reflects how YOU see it. By definition, that makes it subjective. That's not a bad thing, though. Rating things statistically is not always (or even usually) the best way, unless you're talking about bank accounts!:laugh
Disagree with you on PNC, as I rate it ahead of the Jake. But you have a lot more parks visited than I do. PNC does have a lot of "personal touches" that you don't mention, like the 21 foot wall in right commemmorating Clemente; the local limestone used on the inside, which is a unique color to any ballpark; the ironwork on the exterior and interior, which reflects the city's steel making history; the light tower design, which reflects old Forbes Field; and the banners all along the walkways, highlighting important occurrances and players in Pirates team history. PNC does a better job of incorporating the team's history into the park than any other park I've been to.
But it seems you and I also place importance on different aspects of a park, so that certainly would impact how we rate them. But thanks again for a very informative site!

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah. With ballparks it's impossible to grade solely statistically. What I tried to do was go a little beyond what Brian Merzbach or some of the other afficianados did. I tried to only use subjective scores for the weights. Obviously history and comfort mean different things to different people. But in saying "statistically" I guess I mean that I only used statistics that are objectively graded (+ 1 or 2 based on others' relatively objective judgments). I didn't just want to give a letter grade or a value out of 10 to a bunch of categories as often happens. I wanted to use statistical stats to measure subjective weights- if that makes sense.
And of course everybody's experience is different. You have to visit a ballpark tens of times to get an unbiased sense of the place. I haven't done that for all the parks, but I would like to.

Roger - Thanks for the link to Graham Knight's site. It is excellent too. My personal pilgrimages will begin in earnest this year, as I am retiring soon. My plan for many years has been to see all of the major league parks and as many of the minor league parks as I can fit in, all the while sampling some of our beautiful country's other treasures as well. Of the new parks, I've only been to Jacobs and PNC, but I definitely liked PNC better, although the Jake was no slouch, either. I can't imagine any better approach to a ballpark than walking across the Roberto Clemente Bridge and looking directly into the park from center field. It helps to "warm you up" for the total experience once you get inside!
Thanks again for the link.

PNC is a great park. I certainly won't dispute that. Just for the sake of giving another view, here are my only criticisms of PNC:
-Because you must cross the bridge to get from downtown to the ballpark it can be a pretty slow, and in cold weather a fairly long walk.
-It is only two decks, and the first and even to an extent the second is sloped very gently which means that although you aren't too far up you can be 30-40 rows back from the field without much elevation and many fans' heads in front of you
-The scoreboard is good but certainly can't compare to Cincinnati, Houston or Cleveland
-There isn't a real flow to the architecture of the place. At the Jake everything fits with everything else. There is a real connection between the elements of the park and the city. At the Jake everything seems "perfect" in how it was designed. At PNC, the limestone is nice, the ramps are cool and the view is great, but there is a uniformity and connected-ness lacking.
-Obviously there aren't great crowds at PNC for most games, but that isn't the ballpark's fault
Don't get me wrong. It's a great park. And I can absolutely see why it's your favorite and why you like it better than Jacobs. I guess a lot of it depends on personal experience, which Bill James writes is very small and tells us very little of the whole picture. That's why opinions can differ so much.
Even my complaints about PNC are somewhat based on my own experiences. And I am by no means any kind of final word. Although I am in a quest right now to find out as much statistically about ballparks as I can, they are a subject that will ultimately remain subjective. Unlike players, one of the most influential descriptors of one's opinion of a park is its beauty, which cannot be measured by stats, but for generalities and averages.

Roger - Agreed that ballparks are extremely subjective, and no two people will ever see them exactly alike. Actually, before I went to PNC, I didn't think I would ever go to a ballpark I liked better than the Jake, in all honesty. But let me address your points individually, to give a different perspective to those who may have never had the opportunity to attend a game there.
-Because you must cross the bridge to get from downtown to the ballpark it can be a pretty slow, and in cold weather a fairly long walk.
You DON'T have to cross the bridge, if you don't choose to. When I went to see the D'backs (Randy Johnson was pitching; 16 K's in 7 IP), I parked in the big lot beeween PNC and Heinz Field, about two minutes. I prefer the bridge simply because of the atmosphere. Even after the game - vendors, musicians - it's great. There was nothing like that in Cleveland (at least when I was there). BTW, did you check out the art gallery after the game? Just excellent, and if you want to drop a couple bills, you can get an autographed picture/painting.
-It is only two decks, and the first and even to an extent the second is sloped very gently which means that although you aren't too far up you can be 30-40 rows back from the field without much elevation and many fans' heads in front of you
I really don't understand this one. I've sat in several different locations, and all were excellent. In Cleveland, I felt like I was in outer space I was so darned far from the field. Not so in Pittsburgh, and the Johnson game I mentioned was a sellout - I was in the back row, upper deck, behind home plate, and it felt like I could reach out and touch the players!
-The scoreboard is good but certainly can't compare to Cincinnati, Houston or Cleveland
Don't know about Cinci or Houston, having never been there (yet!:o ). But no doubt the jumbo board in Cleveland is superior. This is one of our major differences in criteria for a ballpark, I think. I don't really care about the scoreboard, as long it shows the score. Three Rivers had a marvelous scoreboard, but I wouldn't even mention together with PNC (oops, guess I just did!:D ). But Cleveland's is nice - in fact, a have a nice pregame picture looking out towards that scoreboard from behind the plate that hangs in my office!
I do disagree with you on this point. The bridge is tied right into the ballpark; they built it along the river, so you can arrive by boat if you want, tying in with the rivers, which pretty much define Pittsburgh; the limestone and steel construction reflect Pittsburgh's history as a steel city; and the design of the light towers reflects the former Forbes Field. And when you are in the park, watching the game, river traffic, city traffic - you feel like a part of the city. I didn't have that feeling in Cleveland - all you see is the Gund Arena right outside, and then the Terminal Building, about a mile away. I think I disagree with you more on this point than any other.
-Obviously there aren't great crowds at PNC for most games, but that isn't the ballpark's fault
You are dead on right there. But a couple of years ago the Jake was starting to have many empty seats, too. Now that the Tribe is on the rebound again, they are starting to sell out again. Strangely enough, however, all three games I have attended at PNC were sellouts, and the crowd were great and really into the game.
So, we'll continue to disagree, and it's only a matter of small degree. You have Jake #1 and PNC #3; of the parks I've been to, I'd have PNC #1 and Jake #2. But I have a lot more to go to than you do! Incidentally, from what I've seen and read about SBC Park in Frisco, it might sneak into my top three someday, too.

As long as we can "agree to disagree". I love both parks. All your points are understandable. Again, a lot of it depends on personal experience.
I like the feeling at the Jake where you can be downtown and look right into the park, and I like coming out of the game right into restaurants, bars and a fun street scene.
A lot of the cookie cutters had sort of that bridge scene of getting to the ballpark and that's fun too.
I guess to me PNC seemed like a little better improved attempt to revive HOK's design style. I recently interviewed Dan Hart, PIT's media relations director and he had some interesting things to say. Pittsburgh wanted to do something new and they did with the only 2 decks. I find it hard to find much to criticize about PNC. I guess it doesn't quite have the sharpness to me as the Jake does. PNC doesn't have the dark dirt and its outfield design, although meant to open the skyline, isn't that interesting.
The Jake has always seemed magical to me. That's personal experience, though. Won't disagree that PNC is a wonderful park.
Part of one's JAke opinoin may depend on when you went there. When the place was rocking in the 90s (and hopefully soon again) the atmosphere was unbelievable. If you've ever been to an Ohio State football game you might know it.
The president of HNTB architects recently told me about the rep in the stadium architecture world of PNC. It was a necessary type of design to stir a little life back into the retro wave. Of course, that little ounce of life prompted Phili and Stl to design pretty sterile new parks (although very nice).
Good debate though.

Let's see: Old Busch - 4 times (all in 2005), don't realize what I have been missing out in a ballpark
New Busch - 2 times (my 3rd and 4th time are back to back! then two more)
I'll be going to two more next month during my cousin's graduation in Manhattan:
Shea Stadium (June 22) against the Cincinnati Reds
Yankee Stadium (June 23) against the Florida Marlins (what kind of game is that?)
Long Island Ducks (June 24) against the Atlantic City Surf (the Ducks are a Double-A independent team)
Pondering on going to:
Comiskey Park II (never shall I call it by its new name, which is disgraceful)
Wrigley Field
Kaufmann Stadium
PNC Park
Citizens Bank Park
The first three are close to Missouri, but as for the last two, I'd need to sneak in to Pittsburgh or Philly.

My wife and I have spent our summer vacations each of the past few years at Anna Maria Island, FL, which is about a 40-minute drive from St. Petersburg. On one especially hot August afternoon in 2003, we decided it would be fun to get out of the sun and see a game in the air-conditioned comfort of The Trop. The parking lot was teeming with about 200 cars when we arrived at the ballpark, about 30 minutes before gametime, so I was not able to park any closer than 200 hundred feet to the entrance.
I asked the man at the ticket window if he had any good seats on the first base side of the field level, and he sold me two tickets for about $20 each saying, "I think you'll like these." An usher took us to the seats which were between home plate and the left end of the Ray's dugout, about ten or twelve rows back. About 3,000 fans were scattered thoughout the park, sitting as quietly as if they were waiting for a church service to start.
Just before game time, I realized I left my glasses in the car. I walked back to the gate, where a security guard told me that re-entry to the park was not permitted, but because I seemed like a nice person he would stand at the door and watch me while I went to the car. On the way back in, I took a few pictures of the empty Rotunda with my digital camera.
The game started. The Rays were down about 7 runs by the fourth inning, and several small children who had already caught foul balls gave the new ones that went into the stands to other kids who hadn't gotten any. My wife and I watched the game, and took several sets of pictures of the action on the field and of the ballpark. I got up at one point to go to the concession stand, and was impressed with how concerned the ushers were when they asked me about the comfort of our seats and whether everything in our section was OK.
Back at my seat, a gentleman wearing a button-down dress shirt with a Rays logo embroidered on the pocket was sitting directly behind me. Unlike most of the other fans --and my wife and I, who were working our way through an order of chicken fingers and fries, and a very good dish of Cuban-style black beans and rice -- he seemed to be very focused on what was happening on the field and did not hestitate to express his disappointment with the Rays' performance to anyone who cared to listen. "Not a lot to do in this town," I thought. He grumbled especially loudly when the rain from a passing thunderstorm leaked through the fabric roof and left a large puddle near second base. At the seventh-inning stretch I stood up and asked him if he would take a picture of me and my wife. We had a nice chat about my camera (he said he'd like to have one like it), and after some confusion over where the shutter button was he said he got a nice shot. He left shortly after that.
As we walked to the top of the stairs after the game ended, several fans asked me if I knew who the man was who took our picture. I said I didn't, and they told me that he was Vince Naimoli, the owner of the Devil Rays.

The only major league games I saw were at Atlanta-Fulton
County Stadium and Candlestick Park.
Minor league games at Rickwood Field and Hoover Met,
both Birmingham Barons' fields.
The Met is OK, but nothing beats a game at Rickwood!

I enjoyed every minute being at minute maid park. What delicious OJ!
Oriole Park at Camden Yards is still the best fan friendly (Except when the Yankee fans come to town, sorry to bash you guys, but you are pretty rowdy.) venue in America. It brings on the taste of Retro-theme ballparks.
I saw Shea Stadium during my trip to New York City in 8th grade.
I went to a game in Tampa Bay and also in Miami.
My combined record: 11-3 (7-3 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards) Home Team Record. I always pull for the home team.
I want to go on a 30-stadium tour sometime in the near future. I just gotta get a lot of time off of work and a lot of duckets. :dance

Isn't that the one where the Nationals scored two in the top of the 11th, then Griffey hits one out with two on the complete a fantastic comeback? You couldn't ask ofr a better game!!;)

he already appreciates and understands the financial sacrafice we make because my wife and his twin sister come along also....our basement has 16 8x10 framed pictuerd of the kids in front of or in every stadium we have been at and sometimes we just sit down there and stare at each one and talk about the park....best thing i ever did was decide to try an accomplish this with my family....when we go to each game we are usually the first ones in the park for btting practice and autographs and just walk around the enitre park and take it all in....my son has had balls thrown to him by players during batting practice and sometimes they come over and sign them or i get pictures of him witht he players...there are alot of very nice players out there....he doesnt have to be a superstar for my boy to becaome an instant fan....

Gee, where were you when I was growing up?:p My dad took us to one game a year - and believe me, I still appreciate that! It was always the highlight of my summer. We went to either Cleveland or Pittsburgh (Municipal Stadium/Forbes Field), caught the night game, stayed over and went home the next day. And those are some of my fondest memories of childhood, for many reasons. The pictures are a great idea; I wish I had thought to do that when I took my son to ballgames. Good luck on completing your journeys. And with my retirement coming up this month, maybe I'll run into you along the way somewhere - who knows?

Well, you're asking me to remember something from when I was 6 years old.
But....
I have a distinct recollection of sitting on an uncomfortable, obviously old--meaning old at that time--bench. And it was clear to me the park was smaller than the ones I had seen on TV.
That's all I remember of Seals Stadium, I'm sorry to say.

I have been doing 2-3 new parks a year over the last 7-8 years. I have seen the following: Tigers Stadium, Busch, Metrodome (horrible place to watch a game), RFK Stadium, Wrigley, Comiskey Park, US Cellular, County Stadium, Cinergy Field/Riverfront Stadium (cookie-cutter), Yankee Stadium, Coors Field, Chase (formerly Bank One) Field, Fenway Park, Citizens Park, Orioles Park at Camden Yards, Jacobs Field, and Miller Park. Going back to Boston and NY this August and plan to see Shea.
Best Parks (including View, ammenities, food, neighborhood, overall enjoyment):
1. Wrigley Field
2. Fenway Park
3. Citizens Park
4 County Stadium
5. US Cellular Field
6. Orioles Park at Camden Yards
7. Jacobs Field
8. Yankee Stadium
9. Tigers/Briggs Stadium
10. Miller Park
Worst:
1. Metrodome
2. Cinergy Field
3. RFK Stadium
4. Chase/Bank One Ballpark
5. Busch Stadium

I just added the Ranger's park (Ameriquest) to my list. Nice park but I still put Orioles Park at Camden Yards at the top.
We saw two games (June 14 aND 15) between Rangers and White Sox. Rangers won the first game 8-0 with a complete game shutout. Shows the Rangers "potential" when they get good pitching.
The next night we saw the White Sox play like World Champs -- great pitching, hitting and great fielding. Sox won 8-2.
BTW: The worst park I have seen remains the Metrodome. Great park when it's filled to capacity and the TWins ahead -- noisy and full of happy people -- like in playoffs or World Series. But a terrible park if less than half-full and with the Twins behind.

Yeah, that's my problem right there. Ya see I can't drive. I was born with this perception issue that stopped me from driving. It's like I don't know how close or far away I am too something. So any ballpark near me that I go too I'd have too find a way too get there by bus or train. Hoping too go too Philly this year by train too check out Citizen bank Park though.

I lived in Minnesota 1966 thru 1974, then again 1981 thru early 1998.
The old Met Stadium was good for baseball, but the HHH "Dome" is terrible for baseball.
It was fun to see a playoff game at the HHH Dome -- very noisy and excited crowd -- but regular season games there are terrible. I felt like I was sitting in a TV audience. Of all the parks I have seen, the MetroDome was the worst.

Umm, Candlestick as the best park of all time? I saw probably over 200 games there, perhaps over 300 games there, between 1960 and 1994. I can think of a lot of things to call that place, but "the best park of all time" is not one which would have occurred to me.
Major leaguers ranked it with Philly and the two NY stadiums as having the worst, most unruly fans in MLB. While I've never seen games in Philly or NY, it's hard for me to imagine the fans there are as bad, per capita, as the ones at Candlestick's night games were. I once had a drunk, who'd been trying to start a fight with fans down near home plate all night long, throw a full and very large cup of beer directly and deliberately into my face. The good news for him was that he got his fight....
(One would think he'd have picked someone who was not nearly 6'2", not over 250 pounds, dead sober, a still-young 31 at the time, and prone to his own considerable moments of anger. If the drunken jerk in question is reading this by some remote chance, please be consoled with the knowledge my right hand's knuckles hurt for nearly a week afterward.)
I remember watching a Braves-Giants night game on TBS in the late 80's. One drunken jerk after another was starting fights in the stands, throwing things onto the field, or running onto the field. The Braves' announcers couldn't stop ranting about it for any length of time. ("Now, here's another guy whose parole officer would like to see what he's up to....")
And ALL of this, of course, is secondary to The Big One: THE WIND.
I'm sorry to sound like I'm fixated on the words of Braves announcers, because I detest most of them (especially Slutton), but I really got a kick out of the time Carey said, in roughly these words, "You know, I just have to wonder how they could have been so wrong about this place. You'd think that, back in 1959 or so, somebody would have come out to Candlestick Point, stood here for awhile, and said, `It's kind of windy out here.'" It was a good half-hour before I stopped laughing.
With all of that said, I will make the following admission:
There was a perverse pleasure to be gained from watching a night game at Candlestick, and the more atrocious that the wind was--and the more those two flags which were about 50 feet apart blew fiercely in opposite directions--the more I would walk out of there feeling a twisted enjoyment from having experienced a baseball game that way. I suppose it was like the "Cheesehead" fans one sees on TV at Lambeau Field, barechested, in a blizzard. It looks idiotic and incomprehensible to a "normal" viewer, but they love every second of it. I'll admit I sometimes felt the same way about the gale winds that blew at night games--and, not infrequently, even at day games--at The Stick.
But the enjoyment was a largely solitary one. In the Summer of 1984, I could go sit pretty much right behind the plate, 2 or 3 rows from field level, by the 7th inning of almost any night game, because nobody was going to the games. A lot of that was because of the fairweather fans and the fact the Giants stunk--as they would again in 1985. But a lot of it was also the abominable weather, with a wind chill of god-only-knows-what.
I now live about 285 miles north of The Stick. Would I like to see one more nighttime baseball game there before I die? Yeah, I guess I would, even though it obviously will never happen. But I only have that wish because of the perverse streak in me which, as I work my way through my 50's, wonders if I can still take that horrific wind.
YO, Wrigley fans! You got nothing on the Stick when it comes to wind!

Sorry, you have to wait until then, but I am sure you understand.

On successive days last August I went to Anfield (vs. Kaunas of Lithuania) and Goodson Park (vs. Udinese of Italy) and I had a blast. Both places remind me of Fenway.
Other games I have seen are Atletico Madrid hosting Real Betis, Atlas (Guadalajara, MX) hosting Cruz Azul, and Manchester United & Celtic in Seattle.
Go Reds!

Here goes:
Tiger Stadium - Hundreds of times (hometown park)
Cleveland Stadium (A few times as a kid - usually 60,000 empty seats since the Indians were terrible year in and year out back then)
Candlestick (1988. Windy.)
Jacobs Field (1995 I think - what a change!)
Tropicana Field (Sterile. 13-inning game. 1998 I think)
Camden Yards (Outstanding park. All Baltimore needs now is a team to fill it)
Ameriquest Field (This year. Not bad sightlines.)
Two stadiums in the Korean League (I forget their names). Both were kinda dirty and old without the charm. Lots of noisy props in the stands.
Haven't been to CoPa yet, and looks like I won't get the chance this year.

Big Whiskey, your description of Korean ballparks echoes my thoughts about the stadiums here in Taiwan. They've added a couple new ones in the past few years, which are actually quite nice, but the atmosphere is still the same. Lots of drums, banging of plastic megaphones, and air horns. But you get used to it, I guess. The tickets are cheap enough, and it's quality baseball. Let's play two!
I think I've already posted a list in this thread, so I'll just say the biggest slot to fill on that list would be Fenway Park. I'll get there one of these summers, but I'd better start putting some nickels aside now. The already ridiculous prices are only going to go up.

So he was a mini Johnny Vandermeer. Was it 7 or 9 innings?
It was pretty cool. Most of the people around us had no idea what was going on. The announcer even got it wrong at the end..."Player X" has just pitched a no hitter." but then he quickly corrected himself and added " a perfect game".
Still hoping to see a Met do it....

The Ballparks that I have seen games in (including the Minors) are
1. Busch Stadium (St. Louis, MO),
Not the new one although I have to go. I loved that stadium so much, it was a home away from home during my childhood.
2. SafeCo Stadium (Seattle, WA),
It is truly as beautiful as everyone says it is, and the closest major league park to me now, it has great seats and is fun to watch a game in.
3. Coors Field (Denver, CO),
The games are fun to watch at this stadium and I love the outfield forest.
4. Franklin Quest Field (Salt Lake City, UT),
A typical AAA park with a wicked view of the Wasatch Mtns. and an easy going feel to it.
5. Nat Bailey Stadium (Vancouver, BC),
It is a shame that a city the size of Vancouver only has a single A team and this stadium is the reason why, it is very old but still an alright place to watch baseball. Hopefully it will be demolished and a bigger stadium will be built because it too has a wonderful view and Vancouver deserves a AAA team

As a kid my grandfather carved his name in the seats behind and to the left a little ways of homeplate in Fenway, and i went on a tour of Camden Yards, had a lot of fun.

Wrigley Field: Chicago
US Cellular Field: Chicago
Miller Park: Milwaukee
Busch Staduim (the one that was just demolished): St. Louis
Jacobs Field: Cleveland
PNC Park: Pittsburgh
I'm planning a trip to Minneapolis, MN later this month, and I plan to see a game at the Metrodome.
Got Twins?
08-10-2006, 02:24 PM
My 1st MLB game, 7/22/77 Metropolitan Stadium (Twins old stadium in Bloomington, where Mall of America now sits)
Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome (we need a new stadium here in MN, enough said)
Kingdome (worst I have been to)
Milwaukee County Stadium (tailgating in Milwaukee is a great experience)
Coors Field (love the view of the mountains and the fact Denver has a team)
Busch (great baseball fans and history here)
Safeco (a very nice new stadium, one of my favorites - they should have imploded the Kingdome years before they did!)
Miller Park (tailgating again - wish the roof was open the night I was there)
Wrigley (a classic, finally got there last year, a great place to take in a game)
All in all, it's too tough to pick a favorite.
I have toured Fenway Park & Turner Field (unfortunately the Red Sox & Braves were both out of town when I was there).
Exhibition game in 1988 at Mile High Stadium, Twins vs Blue Jays and a minor league game there as well.
Other minor league stadiums
Midway Stadium (St Paul Saints)
Cobb Field (Billings Mustangs)
Siebert Field (now defunct Minneapolis Loons played at the U of MN baseball stadium for 2 years)
Just added two more the first weekend of August, plus a return trip to Wrigley (sat in the bleachers this time)
Kauffman in Kansas City - also visited the site of old Municipal Stadium and the Negro League Museum
Busch III in St Louis
