Though I'm not sure of his name, I know why the Rockies chose a dinosaur for their mascot when they moved into Coors Field. Can anybody else guess why they chose a dinosaur for their mascot?

My guess would be that while building Coors Field, they found some old dinosaur bones. I know that Wyoming and Montana are hotbeds for dino excavation; why would Colorado be any different?

Either that or as an homage to their first Opening Day pitcher, Charlie Hough, who I think was 46 at the time.

Lemme guess. Baseball at that altitude is about as interesting as an episode of Barney.

Because their original premise of Bobby the Beergutted Beanie Baby was found to be way too frightening for small children during initial test market trials?

Sorry although Coors Field has its own brewery, the dinosaur was picked because dinosaur fossils were found when the field was being built. Speaking of beerguts, I heard there will be no more Bernie the Brewer sliding into a beer mug at Miller Park. Please tell me this isn't true.

Afraid I've heard the same thing. Next thing you know, they'll turn off the fountains in K.C., smash the cable-car bell at PacBell and get rid of the Comiskey fireworks. Home run celebration just ain't what it used to be ...

I still remember Phyl and Phyllis the cartoon patriots at Veterans Stadium in the early 70's who rang a giant Liberty Bell for every Phillies home run (none too often in the early '70's). Does anyone remember when those mascots and the bell came down?

Definetely. I hate the Brewers (I consider them traitors since I love the AL and hate the NL), but I always enjoyed the beer slide. Home run celebrations like that are very enjoyable and should be kept apart of baseball. As for Comiskey I don't know what I'd do if fireworks didn't go off every time Thomas, Ordonez, Lee, Konerko, Durham, Valentin, ect. hit a homerun. And with sluggers Crede and Rowand on their way up from Charlotte soon, it would be tragic. Just curious, how many teams celebrate with fireworks after their team LOSES like the Sox do occasionaly when they have pre-set fireworks displays? I've always pondered the logic behind celebrating a loss.

Can't resist chiming in with the replica train at Enron that runs along the top of the left-field facade wall blowing fake steam and making digital bell and whistle noises every time an Astro homers. We're also treated to a diamondvision rendition of the old Astrodome scoreboard display, with the fireworks, snorting bull, and gun-shooting cowboy. Does anybody know of any canned homer celebrations that predated that one, by the way? Its debut was in 1965.

Hi there.

His name is Dinger and he has to be the worst mascot on the planet. It's embarassing, really.

Yes exactly, that would be like having an elephant show up as the mascot for a game with teh Oklahoma Piano Keys. If I were Dinger, I wouldn't show up. He might have someone try to speed up mother nature's creation process for fossil fuels and start drilling for him before his time.
