HELLO TO EVERYONE. I was wondering does anyone have any stories or memories of the old wrigley field in LA. WE all know that the LA ANGELS PLAYED THERE in 1961. and that THE TV SHOW HOMERUN DERBY was filmed there. THE stadium i think was torn down in 1965. LOOKING foward to hearing from you take care everyone and have a nice holiday season DONALD DETROIT MI :waving :dance :dance :clapping

I was born in '61 so I didn't go to my first Angels game till sometime in the late 60s in Anaheimbut I know I was raised an Angel fan (instead of a Dodger fan) because my Dad must have gone to some PCL Angels games in Wrigley, probably when he was going to USC in the early 50s.

I understand the park was designed with the same corner & dead center outfield depth as the Chicago Wrigley but there wasn't room for the normal curved outfield fence; the fences were pretty straight from the corner & made a near right angle in dead center- consequently very shallow in the gaps. A record 248 home runs in a stadium was set there in the 1961 season & that record was only surpassed at Coors Field (I think)

Here's a link with a great color pic I hadn't seen beforehttp://www.ballparks.com/baseball/american/wrigla.htm

It also reminded me that the movie It Happens Every Spring was filmed there- that's a great baseball movie; I wish TCM would put it on again one of these days.

Donald-check out Pacific Coast League (http://www.coastleague.com) and scroll down to the "Los Angeles Angels". You'll find an excellent writeup on the Angels of the PCL, photos of LA's Wrigley Field and a list of movies filmed at the stadium.

Wasn't that episode filmed at Chavez Ravine? . . Or am I thinking of Mr. Ed?

Hollywood's Gilmore Field was used in several films too. In "The Stratton Story", the last scenes (Monty's "comeback" game) were filmed at Gilmore Field - just one example.

Some of the site say the LA Wrigley was torn down in 1966, I know that is mistaken. I remember going to Wrigley sometime in the Spring of 1968 with an Indian Guides outing. I was in Indian Guides in 2nd and 3rd grade, and that was after I moved which was September 1967.

The thing I do remember is that we actually went on the field and I noticed home plate, and at the time it did not mean much to me, for I had not started playing baseball yet. Now I look back and remember that evening fondly, just because of that particular tidbit.

Damn Yankees, The Winning Team are also among the movies filmed at the ballpark.

This is a revival by me of a very old thread last previously posted on in 2005. Wrigley Field was definitely still standing in 1967 as it was used for an episode of the CBS TV Private Eye drama "Mannix" in that year or possibly as late as 1968. I searched an "Mannix" episode data base to get the name and date of the episode that I know I saw which featured a lot of action at LA's Wrigley Field in reruns, but couldnt come up with it. It definitely did occur though.

Wrigley Field was easily the most picturesque ballpark in the history of Los Angeles. Very beautiful. It proved that indeed concrete could be beautiful. Much more appealing than Chicago's IMO

Wrigley Field was easily the most picturesque ballpark in the history of Los Angeles.

This, folks, is another typical passive aggressive attack on Dodger Stadium by a strange phenomenon known as a disgruntled Mariner fan with accute inferiority complex. People like this (Better known by the scientific term fanitus Mrakus) spend most of their free time hunting down opportunities to imply and state that Dodger Stadium is an inferior ballpark in every way.

Whereas most normal humans would simply comment on how picturesque it is, Mrakus specimens always add terms like, "easily the most", "clearly superior", "hands-down the best", thereby taking definitive swipes at Dodger Stadium as being "clearly the least", "easily the worst", "hands-down inferior", etc..

They also always never add "in my opinion", but rather, they present their opinions as if it's they're hard facts.

:laughWrigley Field in Los Angeles was designed by the same person who designed Comiskey and Wrigley. Very nice little ballpark. IMO it was much better looking than Dodger Stadium, especially the exterior. Love the tower.

Do you even have "vivid memories" to state that Wrigley Field L.A. was "easily" the best Los Angeles ballpark ever? Come on, hypocrite, think it over.

I'm not questioning your loyalty to the Dodgers, but you seem to act as if you "experienced" the 1988 World Series.

Who says I was experienced? I have every right to brag about the 1988 championship because it was my team who plays for the city I grew up in.

Experienced is also a verb. To go through, to participate in personally, to undergo, to feel.

I've had enough of you and have forwarded the PM you sent me to a moderator. I believe it is best if I place you on my ignore list.

Very beautiful indeed. It is considered by many to be the best minor league ballpark ever built. Too bad the power alleys were too short.

If you think what someone has to say is so worthless you don't want to see it then it should be easy to ignore any evidence of it. . If you don't feel like you can have a usefull and/or civil discussion with another member then don't engage them. Posts can be ignored even without using the ignore feature. Regardless of what the other party may have said to annoy you, dumping on them can only lead to negative consequences - and makes the thread unpleasant for everybody else.
