I met him tonight in the course of business and what a great guy!! Said he was a catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers before they moved to...well, you know where :(

He's about 77 years old, looks great, is so mellow and I just had such a great time talking with him. I'd love to read up on his baseball career if anyone has any ideas where I might do that? I did a Google search but couldn't get anything on him.

Absolutely not. Nobody by that name (or even any remotely conceivable spelling of a name that might sound like that) ever played in the major leagues.

I couldn't find a record of any minor leaguers by that name either, though my records aren't complete.

Are you sure you have the correct spelling for his name? I can't find any record of anyone with that name as ever having playing in the minors. As Halo pointed out, he definitely never played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the Majors.

As most of US here go back to OUR days at EBBETS FIELD, I have never seen OUR Team referred to as "BD's"...and I was simply asking if anyone had!

History can teach us many lessons: the sandlot team, the Bayonne Varicose Dodgers, had to change its name to the Bayonne Bleeders to avoid a humiliating abbreviation. The team was subsequently sued by Chuck Wepner and had to change its name again to I forget what. (I believe Jaykay knows the full story.) There was no Zsenyuk or Szenyuk affilated with the BVDs or BBs.

I don't know if he actually played or not, I've never asked him. I.ve searched myself, and according to online sources, there is no record that he played. His career ended with an arm injury.

What's the difference between a major letter and a varsity letter?

I spoke with my uncle today about this. He signed with the Dodgers during WWII. He received a $500 bonus, and went to spring training. It was the mid 1940s. After spring training he was assigned to Charlestown, Va. Instead of going to Charlestown, he went to the Navy and served in the Navy during WWII. He played for a U.S Navy touring team, theat played out of California. They toured and played against Major Leaguers. After his service was up, he went to Wayne State University, in 48 and 49. I asked him how they let him play after he had recieved a signing bonus. He said that they were allowing returning veterans the go to school, and allowed them to play intercollegiate sports after returning from service.

I know this is off topic to the thread but I think Jaykay should collect all these fictional, but fun, "Brooklyn Stories" spread out through the years and the pages of this forum and sell them. They are really witty and sharp and quite well crafted. It would be a shame for them to die when or if this site ever crashes. He is truly the Jean Shepherd of Flatbush.

In regard to your forecast of doom when the Web site crashes and my obras d'art are lost to posterity, is it not possible that that the site may crash, but the tales (like the Brooklyn Dodgers) will never die?

If you Google that last name, you will find a variety of interesting stories regarding such things as panthers, to beauty contest winner to hockey players.
