Hey guys,

I'm starting to think about my 5th article (all will be posted soon in a new section on Baseball Almanac called The Pinstripe Press) and I'd like to do it on the All-Time Yankees team.

Lou had a GREAT post. but I'd like to get some more nominees and write it based on a majority vote. If you could add yours over the next 2 weeks, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Michael Aubrecht

There has been no mention of a manager. My choice is Stengel, but I think that many factors are involved.

This year, Torre is probably the best choice because the team seems solid and the major problem is motivation and keeping everyone interested and happy.

Last year, Stengel or Martin would have been better because the team required managing and daring moves since it was not a solid team and the offense required more than letting everyone hit away.

"Well, there were days when Mickey Mantle was so darn good that we kids would bet that even God would want his autograph." - Bob Costas' Eulogy for Mickey Mantle

Now what would God do with the autograph of a guy who slunk so low as to cut right to the front of the liver-transplant line, just because he was the great Mickey Mantle? The unabashed romanticizing of Mickey Mantle continues to mystify me, brought to a head lately by Billy Crystal's mushy love-letter of a movie, 61*. Mantle was a good ballplayer, why can't we just leave it at that?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON May-09-02 AT 09:14 AM (EDT)]Mickey Mantle had his share of problems. Yes, he abused himself and it greatly shortened his life. But in the end, he became a major spokesperson for the organ donation program and anti-alcohol abuse. I suggest you really learn about his life before you judge him. Go to www.themick.com and learn about the real Mick. The good and the bad. Personally, I thought 61* was one of the greatest baseball movies ever made.

1B- Gehrig
2B- Lazzeri
ss- Jeter
3b- Nettles
Lf -Ruth
Cf - DiMaggio
Rf- Mickey
C - Munson (no disrespect toward Yogi or Dickey, though)
RHP - Tough decison. Clemens/Chesboro/Catfish
LHP - Ford (sorry Gator)
RP - Rivera. How could it be anyone else? :)
Mgr - I truly believe is it wasnt for Joe Torre the Yanks would not have been as sucessful as they have been the last few years. A true Yankee.

Stengel would have won last year's WS. Torre has become much too conservative and does not want to make moves for which he can be second-guessed. Billy Martin and Stengel tried anything to win. Torre is too lay back. He was not that way the first couple of years.

Mine
1b-Gehrig, nuff said.
2b-Lazzeri
ss- Jeter over Rizzuto
3b-Nettles over Rolfe. In a couple years I might put ARod here.
Of- Ruth, Dimaggio, Mantle
c-Dickey over Berra. Almost a tossup.
RHP-Ruffing over Hoyt and Chesbro. Chesbro is remembered for 1 year, tho he had more good years. Hunter and Clemons had their best years with other clubs, tho Roger could make a case with the Yanks. So it's really down to Red and Waite. Close call between them.
LHP-Ford over Gomez, Pennock, Guidry, and Pettite. God, the Yanks have been rich in pitching. And we thought it was just hitting.:laugh :laugh :laugh
Relief-MO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had some other good ones too.
Mgr-I'll take McCarthy. But a good case could be made for a number of them.

Nice team BB, but no middle IFers on the bench?

What amazing lists! Just considering RF -- Maris, Winfield, Jackson. *whew* A compelling case can be made for each of them, but I wonder if those who are old enough to have seen them all play would agree -- looking only at the fielding side and setting aside their offensive achievements -- that Maris was the best of an extremely talented bunch. I don't think I'm alone in feeling that he's rarely been given due regard for his defensive skills. Also, looking exclusively at defense, I think Mantle might edge Dimaggio in CF. Mantle's arm was unbelievable. I seem to recall one year when he had something like 22 or 23 assists -- a pretty amazing feat for a CF. Keeping my votes only to those whom I actually saw play, I'll go for Nettles at 3rd, Randolph at 2nd, Jeter at SS (sorry, Scooter) and, with a bit of a heavy heart, Munson at C over Yogi. Clemens for RHP, Ford for LHP, Rivera for RP, Righetti for MR. Much as I appreciate Joe Torre, it's Casey Stengel for manager. Everybody agrees on 1B and LF, so no point in repeating. There must be at least 50 HOFers who could fill all the other positions and the bench.
