I was wondering how many people have Memorabilia pieces. I've been Collecting cards for over 2 years and i have never pulled a jersey/Base/Bat piece. I have bough a few but never pulled one. I was wondering how many that you guys pulled total from a pack. LMK thanks.

I have never pulled a Baseball memorabilla card. However I have pulled a Jeff Burton Race Used Tire card from a pack of Press Pass NASCAR's.

Seems like eBay is the only way to "pull" a card that has value. People who just rip packs for that reason alone seem to get them and sell them without apparently looking at what it costs to do it. Some pay off, but I can buy $100 inserts for $10 or so. . .a year later--the chase is over and no one cares. Collect for collecting's sake--chasing the dream is just that--a dream. . .unless you get lucky. Figure how many $$ you have to put into the packs you rip and find nothing--then think about what you can spend on the NM insert on eBay if you even really want it--or wait a year when it costs next to nothing. I could never see the reasoning behind it all. I collect vintage--before '75==some insert sets, but they came in packs and you knew you had a chance to get something--and the costs were low per pack. We built sets and went for players just for getting the players. I think it's a sad part of the hobby that lets too many people down. Go to eBay or Yahoo! and look for the cards you want and then decide--is it really worth it. . .because--it's a choice then--not an impossible dream.

I've opened over 200 packs of cards since 2002 and pulled one bat card. It was a David Justice 2002 Topps Traded "Tools of the Trade." It would probably fetch about $2 on EBAY.

I only have a Triple Game Used Jersey card of Carlos Delgado, Jason Giambi, and Todd Helton.

Pretty good i guess, but I bought in on ebay for the sole purpose of trading away. I'm planning on doing the same whenever i can find a good, cheap, GU card on ebay, seeing as most serious collectors are only interested in them.

As for finding GU cards in packs, it will be nearly impossible unless you buy a factory sealed box. The odds of pulling a bat/jersey/whatever card are small as it is, but then add in the fact that most dealers/serious collectors know how to feel the packs and easily determine which ones hold the GU cards.

I havn't had much luck with getting game used/auto stuff from packs. I've got a Rafael Furcal or Larry Walker here and there, but no one really big player like those I've bought as singles. Packs aren't really the way to go, I believe, unless you are a dealer and need the big pull or the big cash in. I like buying the singles more because it's better picking the cards you want, in my opinion.

I don't have any luck pulling GU cards in any sport. The only ones I've pulled for baseball are a 2002 UD 40-Man Chuck Finley jersey card and a 2003 Fleer Tradition Update Sammy Sosa jersey. I buy Yankee GU off eBay if I see them for a few bucks. There's just too many in the market now to fetch the prices they initially got back in the late '90's.

I went nuts one time and bought MANY boxes of Topps 50th anniversary cards. There was a chance to get original Topps vintage cards. I did pull several original signature cards and a few other cards that sold for pretty big bucks for a few months. I figure I paid about $20 per signature by the tome it was over. I still have about 10 sets of the series 1 cards. Geez, what a costly addiction.

Had some fun with my son though...

Well, I just got a wild hair & bought a 3-pack Walmart special & managed to get a Fleer Fall Classic 2003 Bill Dickey game used bat slice. Thought it was kinda cool. Wish they had had these when I was a kid. Haven't looked up the value. I'd really like one of the Babe Ruth cards, but I know they have to be way up there.

DodgersFan,
Just a question. What autographs did you manage to pull from the packs. The ones I've seen like those you described on EBAY are real beauties. I've seen a Pafko and a Podres. I regret not getting one.

Staredge,
Cool story. I love those tales of the retail packs that turn into valuables. I remember I bought a retail pack of Stadium Club awhile back at Target and pulled my first ever jersey from a pack-Barry Bonds. I was a happy man.

Hey Pumpsie (now this is the second time I have seen this name, like Pumpsie Green of 60's--Mets and Sox, right?).

I still have the Gary Templeton and also pulled Pafko and Law. I also still have several full-sets of the reprint set and all of the special set included--but never got one of the original Topps cards I wanted or a signature card of one of the major stars (Pafko excluded).

Thanks for asking, I had to go back and look and then remembered what a great set it was (is).

Friday afternoon I bought a $10 box of 2004 Topps Series 2 and pulled a "Series Stitches" relics Tom Seaver GU jersey card. My third retail GU pull and 2nd within the last six weeks.

before I discovered ebay I would go crazy buying backs looking for game used jersey cards when I would never find one. After spending about 200 bucks and getting nothing (I guess now that I look at it I got cards to send out ttm) I finally discovered Ebay. Its saved me tons and tons of bucks and its amazing some of the great deals you can get

I've gotten really soured on the GU stuff. I've pulled 2 GU, a Giambi and I think a Will Clark (I need to double check, they're just sitting in a box) and an Auto the last year -- I'm not a card guy at all, I would just buy a box here or there when something caught my eye and I had a $20 burning a whole in my pocket at Target. I keep telling myself to knock it off.

I had looked at GU stuff on eBay before, especially the old DiMaggio age stuff. I think the breaker for me was the swatches of Mickey Mantle "worn" cards that were included in the Target exclusive factory sets last Christmas. I mean, they're making one of Mantle's fishing shirts, or boxers, whatever the hell it was, seem like you were getting a jersey swatch. Just weak. The GU market has gone from the ultra rare find, to now every set and every box is guaranteed -- there are countless bats, jerseys, triple bat/jersey, auto, yadda, yadda. It's just gotten to be too much. It's just not special anymore. Hell, you look on eBay and their are over 6,000 auctions for GU cards, some not even getting a bid at $.99

Before anyone gets up in arms, I'm not dogging anyone here for liking the cards or buying them -- I collect stuff too. That's just my opinion on where the GU market has gone, and why since we had our second kid, I only buy stuff that I like.

The Hobby manufacturers found out how to prey on people's gambling like addiction with baseball cards. Initially it was the designated rookie cards, then as the 90's came along, it was about the insert cards. Very slowly in the early 90's they started to introduce insanely limited runs of autograph inserts (maybe one or two players at 1,000 - 2,000 ea) for the whole set, and that kind of started it.

I got turned off in the mid 90's (95-96) when everything seemed to become about the insert cards. I'd hate to be a kid coming up now, because it is so expensive and there is a tremendous lure to buy these $5-$15 packs that have a whopping 5 cards.

Now when I read / hear people talking about collecting, it just sounds like a bad addiction. I knew it was over when I went to my local store in the late 90's just to browse, and I saw a grown man dropping like $100+ on Topps Finest, frantically tearing open the packs for a refractor, keeping the 1 refractor he pulled, leaving the rest of the cards on the table. He walked out mumbling something about how his wife was going to kill him for spending the $100 bucks. He didn't even want the other cards. It's a pretty gross / sick addiction.

I don't care for the game used stuff either. They've taken full memorabilia pieces and destroyed them to put into cards. What would you rather be looking at, an actual game used Mantle jersey, or a 1/4" piece of it? Step back and think about how LAME that sounds. "Oh man, look at this card, it has a THREAD of Mantle's jersey on it!" .. can you imagine the look you would get from someone. At least the real full jersey is a good conversation piece / display item.

The manufacturers ploy is that "it gives more people a chance to own a piece of "history" that they normally couldn't afford". That's the whole point! Some of this stuff is supposed to be out of the normal person's price range.

The took a Josh Gibson bat for crissakes and broke it down. I don't even know if there are 5 game used Gibson bats period! I mean the company bought it, they can do what they want with it, but from a historical perspective this is an awful way to preserve some of our archives.

Some of the signature inserts are cool, like those dual "cut" autographs of long-deceased athletes. Some of the stuff they're using for cuts for more recent players (HOF plaques, Perez-Steele cards) are ugly, and I'd rather have the actual HOF Plaque / Perez-Steele card than a cut of the signature. You can buy the actual signed HOF Plaque / Perez Steele in most cases for much cheaper than the insert (just because the insert was tagged out of 20 pieces).

They "got" alot of us, fortunately I am not one of them and I got out awhile ago before I ever put some serious money into it. I'm stuck with a collection that is basically worthless on the aftermarket, but holds some nice memories.

Totally agree with you on the destroying/disgracing perfectly good bats. The jersey thing I could go either way on, for the sole fact that the 1/4" squares are probably taken from the inside of a cuff or foldover hem; not to mention how many jerseys they actually went through.

Not being a regular card guy, I haven't seen one in person, I really like the look of the Sweet Spot signature cards I look at on eBay. One thing confuses me though -- Obviously on the Mantle balls, they slice a true ball; but, how do they actually guarantee the authenticity? I've read about how a lot of the cut signatures have proven to be forgeries. On the current Sweet Spot sig cards, do the players just sign a leather template or something? I saw a great looking Mantle auction, other than the fact that part of Mickey's name couldn't be seen through the card.

I've pulled tons of jersey and bat cards, I don't even remember them all. Among them though...

Clemens jersey
Schilling jersey
Vlad jersey
Marcus Giles jersey
Brian Roberts bat
Mike Lieberthal jersey
Kaz Ishii jersey
Richie Sexson jersey
Brandon Phillips jersey
Michael Jordan bat
Mickey Mantle jersey - this was a gorgeous card, it had a pinstripe right down the middle of the piece. Sold it for $125.

I'm not a fan of game used cards, I sell most of the ones I get. They're to blame for the state of the hobby I think, and driving up the cost of packs. I collect autographs, so I try and buy the cheap packs and get cards of as many different players as possible, to eventually get signed.

I guess the best card like this that i got from a pack i was opening was an Al Kaline card with a piece of his bat. I have gotten about 5 or 6 other bat or jersey cards from packs, but not of anybody exciting. Also have pulled 3 autographs of nobodies (I dont even remember who they are).

I like these cards if they are of a player i like, but when i get someone who doesnt interest me, neither does the card.

The only one i have that i really really really like is a Whitey Ford with a piece of wood from a Yankee Stadium seat on it, but i got that on Ebay (of course!).
