I'm glad you corrected me, since his prior email address was don-mattingly.com, but he's since omitted the hyphen.

Either case, it's a work in progress, since there's no reference to the "YES" Network, its schedule, and I need to add the part of the various Yankee captains.

Please see the new additions under "Retired and Deceased". IMO, my most important missing name isn't Donnie, but Yogi. I'll correct that this week.

Reminder to self: http://www.yogiberramuseum.org/index1.htm

Mattingly
03-15-2004, 09:37 PM
I've added Yogi's name. Please note that if a player was at any time also a manager, this will be linked. The years in parenthesis (such as "1946-63" for Yogi), represent the years they'd played for the Yanks.

I also tweaked the formatting, making relatively everything uniform. I'd also put the greats' names in the traditional navy colors, like the major heading titles.

Other names will follow shortly.

Thanks. :)

Mattingly
03-19-2004, 08:51 PM
Recent names added:

Joe DiMaggio;
"Wee Willie" Keeler;
Billy Martin;
Mickey Rivers;
Casey Stengel.

New format for managers (Yogi, Billy, Casey): their NYY playing career (if any) will be posted normally, but their managerial career will be linked, with years managing the Yankees being put after this link in parenthetical.

Two new additions under "History", both from the NY Daily News: "Greatest Yankees" and "Classic Yankee Moments". Both will tell you in a nutshell, and in great detail, many things about the history of the team, from the many articles contained in them.

Are there any websites where I can download an audio file of Phil Rizzuto calling a home run. I want an audio file of his classic "Holy Cow"
Not offhand, but this link describes him well:

Poet in Pinstripes (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CE7DB1230F937A35757C0A9659582 60)
O HOLY COW! The Selected Verse of Phil Rizzuto. Edited by Tom Peyer and Hart Seely. Introduction by Roy Blount Jr. 107 pp. Hopewell, N.J.: The Ecco Press. Paper, $8.95.

Phil (The Scooter) Rizzuto played shortstop on the great Yankee teams of the 1940's and 50's. As a ballplayer, Mr. Rizzuto was not a powerful slugger but a master of what might be called baseball's more lyrical arts: the bunt, the hit-and-run, the deft pivot or flip for a double play. As a longtime play-by-play announcer for the Yankees, Mr. Rizzuto embodies the divided, sometimes wandering attention, the ebbing and flowing alertness, the genial state of all-but-suspended consciousness that have made the sound of broadcast baseball a beloved national pacifier.

T. S. Eliot says in "Tradition and the Individual Talent": "The poet's mind is in fact a receptacle for seizing and storing up numberless feelings, phrases, images, which remain there until all the particles which can unite to form a new compound are present together." Though Eliot did not intend this sentence to describe Mr. Rizzuto, it perfectly describes the crystallizing moments of Rizzutian discourse that Tom Peyer and Hart Seely have gathered and preserved in the ragged-right lines of late-20th-century free verse. An example here is "The Bridge," with its divagation addressed to Mr. Rizzuto's onetime partner Bill White: Two balls and a strike. You know what they had on TV today, White? "Bridge on the River Kwai." Everybody should have gotten an Academy Award for that movie. I don't know how many times I've seen it. About forty times. Alec Guinness! William Holden! Three and one the count. I just heard somebody whistle. You know that song? That's what they whistle. Nobody out. And he pops it up.

Eliot's formula is illustrated by the sad, graceful counterpoint between the description of the game and the celebration of the movie, two realms of imagination linked by the little whistled tune, which provides, precisely, "the bridge."

I've tried everything on the Internet and can't find an audio or video clip. One of the best announcers in the history of the game and no one has an audio clip of him. Unbelievable.

If anyone finds one, please email me of send me a message here.
