Hey guys,
I'll be starting a fantasy-point keeper league in Yahoo this year. I'd like to get people from the board on there.
Please feel free to PM me and I'll email you the details when this gets going, which is probably a few weeks away.

I was thinking of doing a fantasy point league. I would like to TRY a live draft. But since we have people all over the globe, that may be tough.
I was thinking of having a 25 man roster, one starter for each position but have 2 catchers (catchers often platoon), 5 starters, and 2 closers, plus 2 "flex" pitchers and one "flex" hitter.
There would be negative points for walks, losses, blown saves, hits, walks and runs for pitchers. Batters would have points deducted for errors and K's.
I am totally open to feedback. Please let me know what you guys want and I will build it.
Who's for head to head?
Eddie Collins: It would be free this time, but we can play for Avatars or something like that.... :laugh

how about making it a 16 or 20 team league?
Zito75
01-29-2004, 05:25 PM
We can look at 16 teams, but then we'll thin pitching. Also, a live draft would take at least 2 or 3 hours. So why don't we shoot for a computer draft. We still have time to work out details.
Any other stats or positions we need to consider? How about a flex infielder and a flex outfielder on the roster?

it never took more than hour last year for a draft in the 20 team leagues i was in. part of the challenge is that wonderfully thined out pitching.

That sounds good, I'd probibly have trouble finding a set time that i would be available for the draft anyways.

if it's 16 pepople, then like the first 4-8 rounds should be 30 seconds, then move up to a minute from there.

I do prefer a live draft but it adds a level of complexity for the organizer. I leave it up to Zito since he is doing the bulk of the work.

We'll give the live draft a shot. I'll be signing us up the first day leagues become available, that way we have a better chance of getting a good draft date. And remember, in case you have never done this before, if you miss the live draft, the computer will pick the players that are left based on how you pre-ranked them.
I'll keep you all posted.

I didn't know I ever agreed to this pool, but sure----the more the merrier! thanks for including me!
Sorry...what are the exact rules of this pool? I only ask because after reading what categories you were thinking of using, I don't know how interested I'd be.....at least not to a point where it would be fair to take away from someone else who would be MORE interested. If there is a lack of others who want in, I'd still be happy to participate.
Is this going to be H2H? Why does everyone prefer those these days? What ever happened to the simple rotisserie, moves made weekly pools? :(
I'll still be in, unless there is someone who is more interested than me in participating. I don't want to be "that guy" who doesnt keep up with the rest of the pool!!!

Because in roto, there's no chance for a comeback. A team leading all season is more likely to continue leading. No chance for most at the bottom.
Roto might be better for a keeper though. If you're out of the running, dump some older guys for younger ones with more potential.
never thought about like that. good point!

No, not yet. Yahoo only says "Mid February" but I can guarantee you that our league will be "locked and loaded" the first day registation takes place, since there actually a limited number of time slots for live drafts.

(I just noticed we have almost exactly the same number of posts here on baseball fever)
Zito75

The league is H2H. I also maxed out the stat categories. We are allowed 15 stats for hitting and 15 for pitching. I also made the rosters 25 man. I made 2 "utility" batter slots as well. So we'll have some bench depth. Each team will have 5 SPs 2 RPs and 3 "other" pitchers. I would say draft guys that get both wins and saves. Batters have negative points for K's, caught stealing and errors. Pitchers have negative points for walks, hits, runs, errors. We can always make changes before the draft which is set for March 5th, 8PM Pacific Time.
Thank you for the invitation to join your pool, but I think it would be better off if you gave someone my spot.
I'm already in one H2H league, which is more than I can handle. I would have liked just a simple rotisserie pool, but that clearly isnt the case here, not that I'm trying to convince you otherwise.
Good luck everyone!
Zito75
02-18-2004, 11:32 AM
Thanks Rudy, I appreciate the heads-up. I've elimanted a few stat categories just to streamline it a little.
Its really not just the categories....I was hoping this would be a simple rotisserie pool, not H2H. Everyone seems to be fans of this H2H phenomenon these days----I'm not. But I'm willing to give it a shot---and unfortunately, I commited to Racosun's pool long before this one.
I'm sorry again for leaving, but good luck everyone!
Sandman
02-18-2004, 03:32 PM
There's way too many stat categories in there. Maybe go down to 8x8 at least? Ideally, 5x5?
AVG, HR, RBI, SB, E
W, L, ERA, SO, SV

I generally agree with sandman that less is more, although I'd be happy with about 8x8. The reason being that periferal stats dilute the importance of important stats. If you win ERA but lose balks you're just 1-1 even though Era is more important. I do think IP is important though. Perhaps even more that W and L?
However, maybe we should take this discussion to the league page?
Sandman
02-18-2004, 07:05 PM
I don't think we need ER and ERA. Don't think we need CG or SHO either.
Here's my suggestion. Here are the most important ones:
AVG, HR, RBI, SB, R
W, ERA, SO, SV, WHIP
If we want to add more, we should have:
OBP and SLG% (possibly 2B for batters)
IP, CG (maybe K/BB?)
Zito75
02-18-2004, 08:56 PM
I already have OPS which is OBP + Slugging. So that is covered. I like to have 2B and 3B's on there since it makes HR's less important. I like a little variety.
But we'll keep this going and see how we look in a day or 2. Be sure to check the league board.
Also, I dropped one of the UTIL positions so now it's more like an actual line-up.
So should we drop the ERROR stat all together?
I do want to leave K's (hitters) in or else guys like Jose Hernandez and Richie Sexson will be more valubale then they really are. Plus it adds more strategy.
Sandman
02-19-2004, 05:57 AM
Do you have something against Richie Sexson? ;) :p So what?
Zito75
02-19-2004, 09:47 AM
Naw, I like Sexson.... I like to have K's counted against since it makes strategy more in play.

I like it with OPS. The way I see it, hitters that K a lot have a lower OPS which eventually helps balance things out. My only concern is guys like Ichiro and Pierre who have high averages but no power... we have have lots of emphasis on homers. Oh well. I think we're good though.

If you have a hard time filling up a spot, I'll gladly take it. I took too long to respond in this thread and missed all the spots. I'm very interested in a keeper-league.
I believe Yahoo has an off-line draft option, where the league owner submits the picks to Yahoo. You guys could hold the draft in a chat room, and everyone can keep track of their picks. It's a lot more work for the league owner (Zito), but it would work just fine. Do it every year, same place. Someone could set up a private chat room somewhere, and you can show up and make your picks. Just an idea.

the private chat room option would only work if EVERYBODY could make it to the draft.
I have a 16 team keeper league right now and am having the same problem with the keepers..... in fact I may have one opening for someone who is good with baseball and willing to try to rebuild a team. I have 4 divisions, ..... a playoff for the divisional teams, a league championship and a World Series... we play head to head with everybody playing each team once and everybody playing each team in their own division 3 times. Let me know if you'd like to check out my league site..... and if someone who can't make Zito's league might be interested in a challenge in mine as it looks as though I may be losing a team. That team finished last last season so they will be getting the first pick in this years draft and each team has 5 keepers.
Right now I have teams from Chicago, Maine, Florida, Atlanta, Washington State, Portland, New York and Cleveland.

Mick here.....
I have 16 teams in my league.... last year we played our first season as a 5 man keeper league....... as of March 1st our list of keepers will be final....... for this season...... later in the month close to the operning day of baseball we will draft 19 more players for each team in a live draft.
The way we are doing it is going to CBS Spprtsline..... by signing up by March 9th....... it will cost each team only $7.50 for the season with live updates and much more..
We decided we couldn't do better than that and for $7.50.... it looks pretty darn good......... check it out....... good luck you still have time.

I'd certainly like to do it again. I more or less have my keepers selected. I believe we agreed to keep 4 each, right? We had 14 players, and if we can keep at least 10 or 12 then we could just go with that and not add any new players.
If we added new players, then I suppose they would inherit a defunct team, and select 4 keepers from that team?
That seems like the only fair way to do it.

Keeping 4 players was the idea. My team however, changed so much by the end of the season that I'd be happy with keeping just 2 or so and drafting the rest. I went to Yahoo Baseball yesterday and saw that everything was wiped clean, so that's a problem.

Are you sure? I just tried going there and it came up for me.
Here, I copied down all the teams' rosters to a text file.

It came up for me too. I had also copied down my own team at the end of the season.

Thanks you guys! I just went back to YAHOO and all I can see are football and basketball. I think I have found an owner to take over one of the "defunct" teams aleady... I'll get this going as soon as we can register.

Alright, we are moving right along.
El Halo, you want to give it a shot?
I have all the rosters saved (thanks Insanefish) and will be working on all the "logistics" over the next few weeks. The draft will most likely be in mid March. I'll PM all the owners and make sure everyone gets copies of their roster, then I'll ask for the 4 players you want to keep....
Thanks you guys!

If the league isn't full up yet, I would be very interested. I have been in Yahoo leagues for the lat three years, but in "Open" leagues, so I was never familiar with any of the other managers. It would be nice getting into your league, if at all possible.

It seems that the spots have filled up without me. If not, I'd love to play. E-mail me at tytrain@aol.com, Zito75, if a spot is still open. If not, good luck to all you guys!

I know it seems like I've left the boars, but I just go into hibernation. I usually miss October-December.
If you haven't already replaced me, I'd like to go in for the 2nd season. One question though. Can I change my name from "The Pods" to the "Krynzels"?
Oh, and when are we telling your our keepers? (if we're voting, I vote 2)

Hey DudeCar, welcome back! I was going to try to PM you.
We are keeping 4 players. As soon as I get around to getting everything together, I'll put together the list of teams/ owners and all that jazz.
Please stay tuned.... ;)
Was I in this league? I don't remember any of those team names....

I'm very much looking forward to this. While I'm a veteran of the historical fantasy baseball and fantasy basketball fields, I've never before ventured into actual fantasy baseball. Which is odd, for somebody with over 5,000 posts on this site. Looking forward to it!
Just to make it official: My keepers in this league are Derek Jeter, Jim Edmonds, Carlos Zambrano, and Rich Harden. Who I keep calling Rich Hudson. So hands off.

Hi Guys,
I will be registering the league ASAP. I'll forward the name and password to everyone. I'll have a list of the owners placed on a new thread, hopefully by tomorrow. We are shooting for a draft date sometime in the latter part of March.
Thanks for the interest and stay tuned.... :)

Ok I will post this here and in the league.
What should the deadline for keepers list be?
We have a draft on the 26th?
Should the deadline be the 20th?
What about trading BEFORE the draft.
Lets get some feed back.
Furthermore how will the draft operate.
If I have no keepers then if the draft requires everyone to draft their keepers FIRST I will get to pick 4 of the best of the Non-keepers is that good?
Should the keepers be the last 4 picks? If so then Zito will have to make those players unavailble for people who won't have the luxury of live drafting.
Zito75
03-03-2005, 08:33 AM
I'll have the rules posted in the next couple days. The live draft is set for the 26th still. After some consideration, I feel it's best to have the keepers protected for the entire draft and you can draft them at anytime you want.
Owners, please put everyone elses keepers on your EXCLUDE lists. Thanks!

Hey guys,
I'll be starting a league this year, but I doubt we'll keep the Keeper League going. For one thing, the draft last year was confusing and some owners weren't able to get their keepers. Second, probably 1/4 of the owners gave up last year. So it's a lot of work to keep this going which takes lots of time...
However, I will have a league going and it will be fun & competitive with plenty of friendly trash talk... Details coming soon... Stay tuned! :D

I might be interested if there is still room. Even if it is a live draft, can you still rank players and it will select for you when the time limit is reached? Like CBS Sportsline?

Yep, that's all part of the deal. I am looking at doing 12 teams in the league.
I am exploring the possibility of paying extra so I can make it a keeper league. It'll be much better if the keepers can be managed though Yahoo instead of doing it manually.

Hello,
Former Bay Area guy from 1968-2000. Saw many A's and G's games and now retired here in Asheville, NC. Been playing fantasy baseball for years and want to get into a "dynasty building" league that will go on for years.
Want to try out some of my "BillyBall" and "Money Ball" knowledge, as well as use my interest in the minor leagues to play for fun and for new friends.
PLMK the general picture: number of teams, # of keepers, 5x5, etc.
"DoctaBeale" is a Southern pronunciation of my nickname "Dr. Bill"
BTW, Had a one-on-one with Mantle for 15 mins at KGO AM studio.

Thanks for the interest- details coming soon.
Not so sure if I'll have the keeper league going, since half the owners from last year have split and it's just to hard to draft the teams. It takes lots of time and even more patience.
I'll keep you all posted as registration opens... Thanks! :waving
