Because the website is not up and running yet and because I want to give prospective league members a taste of how awesome this league is going to be...

FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY...

We are currently accepting members for the National Base Ball League (NBBL).

Members will own a team of their choosing and will draft a team of actual major leaguers from throughout history. Players from throughout major league history are available!

Games will be played using a computer simulation programand will be simmed on my computer. Each league member will submit a "managerial profile" so the computer can sim games for his team according to his wishes.

Draw up your lineups, rotations, bullpen, strategies, etc. Make mega-trades to get that missing piece you need for the stretch run. Get a jump on the competition by landing a steal in the draft.

We are looking for at least three more players (which would give us 24 teams to start with). We will have two leagues - the (William) Hulbert League and the (Ban) Johnson League. The Johnson league will use the designated hitter; the Hulbert League will not.

The All-Star Game will be played at mid-season.

Each league is composed of 12 teams, divided equally between 2 divisions (based on team geography). At the end of the 154-game season, the division winners will play each other in a best-of-seven League Championship Series followed by the World's Series: a best-of-nine affair between the Hulbert and Johnson League Champions!

This is a one-season only ticket. No fees, dues or other obligations besides your committment to draft your team and submit a managerial profile.

The rest of the work will be done by the computer, with results posted regularly. You just have to sit back, relax and watch your team of all-time greats trample the competition on the way to October glory!

Imagine Ty Cobb on first, ready to test the throwing arm of Johnny Bench. Imagine Bob Gibson staring down the Beast, Jimmie Foxx as Roger Bresnahan tries to frame the pitch. Imagine Mark McGwire teeing off Warren Spahn and seeing the ball sail over Billy Hamilton's head in center field. Imagine Vladimir Guerrero snaring a liner off the bat of Mickey Mantle, giving Firpo Marberry the save. Imagine Hughie Jennings rounding the bases with his "Eey-Yaw!" on a hit-and-run by Willie Randolph as Scott Rolen tried to fire the ball to Hal Chase in time.

Well...in the National Base Ball League, you don't have to. You can read about it in tomorrow's boxscore!

Sign-up today. (24 teams available.) Please apply by replying to this post and indicating the name of your team (first come, first served). You must use the name of a real major league franchise (though it may be a defunct one) and you will play in the league in which the team actually played (to the extent possible).

Historic and contemporary stadiums will also be available. You may play in any park actually used in the major leagues from 1901-2003. We'll get to that later, however.

For now...who's interested?

Brad Harris
01-23-2004, 12:22 AM
(1) As people sign up, I'll add their names to the earlier post, editing it as necessary.

(2) Hold off on naming your parks because there will be a "stadium" draft before we draft players.

(3) The Montreal Royals and Detroit Wolverines may select which league they wish to represent. (Remember the DH is only in the Johnson League). The Royals were a minor league team and Detroit was an NL entry only with that nickname, though they later joined the AL and changed the name to Tigers, naturally. So please state your preference.

I'd be thrilled to get 32-36 teams. There's certainly enough players (over 16,000) available to stock that many.

Having never played a sim league before, a couple of questions have arisen...

Will this coincide with the Major League season? ie 1 game per day etc or is it alot quicker?

Also how will the draft work?

Let's get an even balance, so given the option, I'll choose the Johnson league, in spite of the Wolverines being in the NL. BTW, Chance, I applaud your decision to name it Hulbert and not Bulkeley.

It doesn't have to coincide with the MLB season, but in order to give everyone plenty of opportunity to get their team drafted, it very well might.

How fast the games are played are up to you guys. Technically, I could have the computer sim the entire season in a single day. Naturally, that wouldn't be much fun.

How about we have a league-wide vote once everyone has signed up: I can sim/post one "day" of games each real day or I can sim 5 games and post every 3 days, 10 games and post every week, etc. Whatever pace everyone decides/prefers.

Draft
The draft order will be assigned completely by random and will go in a "snake" fashion. So the first team picking in the first round will be the last team picking in the second round. I'm simply going to write everyone's team down (alphabetically) and roll dice to determine who's first, second, third, etc. in the first round.

No salaries are involved. You simply pick a player and he's yours. Draft picks can't be traded. Players can be traded after the draft is over.

Free agents - guys who aren't drafted - can also be picked up on a first-come, first-served basis between the draft and opening day.

I figure we'll start a thread here and people will take turns editing the first post.

1. Babe Ruth
2. Wee Willie Keeler
3. Herb Score
4. Baby Doll Jacobsen
5. Rafael Ramirez
6.

etc.

I'll take the Seattle Pilots, since I'm assuming brewcrew will want to play, and he can have the Brewers since he's been around longer. The Pilots are the next best thing. =)

Is it 24 teams (You said in your first post) or 26-32 (You said in a later post)?

The Commissioner
01-24-2004, 10:27 PM
I'll take the Brooklyn Dodgers. However, I will gladly hand this name over to any of the elder Brooklynites from our site should they be inclined to participate. I guess for the time being, I'll go into the Eastern Division of the Johnson League to fill that vacancy. feel free to shift me to whatever division is most convenient for you, though, Chancellor.

At least 24 teams. If we have a great deal more sign up then I think we ought to move towards a three-division per league setup instead. I'm taking a wait-and-see approach with how many sign up.

My minimum target, however, is 24 teams.

No DH for the Montreal Royals.

Hey Chance any opportunity for a 1 player draft exemption. Each team (once finalized) can submit a list of 1-3 players that will be used to "stock" their team. The players must be inextricably identified with the team in question.

Your call on contentious issues
IE. Yankees - Joe Dimaggio

I am think (for myself of course ) of Jackie...... but I realize the Brooklyn entry will contest this.

Commissioner - I will be extremely presumptuous and reply for Chancellor, as I addressed this issue in a PM I sent him recently about another matter. He told me that he is still in the process of moving, and is also concerned about counting the March BF HOF ballots, and then getting out the notice for the April ballot. After those items (most notably the move, which was getting close to complete), he intends to proceed with the sim league. So, he hasn't forgotten, and it sounded to me like everyone interested will be hearing from him before too long. He also was having very limited access to the internet at this time, so that is probably why he hasn't been posting. Hope this helps everyone remain calm - we don't want no stinking riots here!:D And yeah, I'm anxious to get going with this too - really looking forward to it!:gt

!!! UPDATE !!!

Sorry about my hiatus. Believe me when I say that I really missed hanging around The Fever.

So where are we now?

Well...we have 19 teams and 21 signatories. BillyF29 and JayLans need to select teams and that will leave us just 3 teams short of being able to start drafting (which is where the real fun comes in.)

Questions, comments, etc. are welcome. Hope to get this started soon!

TO THE COMMISSIONER, I am changing my team to the Philadelphia Athletics in order to comply with league guidelines. I prefer to play in the DH league.
Regarding the draft, I am curious as to how it is held. Will there be a live draft or do we go ahead and pick players and then turn our rosters into you. I am familiar with certain exclusive rights drafts where no one player can be drafted more than once.
Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Brad Harris

While we eagerly await the 24th and final member of this brouhaha, I thought I'd take a few minutes to discuss with you the particulars of the league.

League Name: NBBL (National Base Ball League)

League Type: One-year (not a "keeper" league, though it could turn into that if enough people are interested.)

Sim Engine: Diamond Mind Baseball version 9.0

I have randomly determined an order for the ballpark draft - the next step in getting things started. The order for the ballpark draft is listed below:

Detroit Wolverines
Oakland A's
Chicago Cubs
Baltimore Orioles
Montreal Royals
Kansas City Cowboys
Worcester Ruby Legs
Dayton Marcos
Atlanta Braves
New York Giants
Texas Rangers
Boston Americans
Louisville Colonels
Colorado Rockies
Brooklyn Dodgers
Houston Astros
St. Louis Browns
Hollywood Stars
St. Louis Cardinals
Milwaukee Brewers
Seattle Mariners
Seattle Pilots
Philadelphia Athletics
Buffalo Bison

You may select any stadium used in the Major Leagues (American, National or Federal) from 1901-2003. Each stadium is uniquely rated for outfield wall distances at various points as well as wall height. Other factors such as the size of the foul territory will also be accounted for in the game. In short, if you select Coors Field, don't be surprised when your pitching staff has a 5.00 ERA. If you pick Dodger Stadium, don't ask me why your team is batting .230.

Detroit, Oakland and Chicago may go ahead and get this started (and hopefully that 24th team will find an owner by the time they've picked.)

The ballpark draft thread can be found here (http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17000).

After the ballpark draft is complete, we'll begin the player draft. I have not yet randomly determined the order of that draft, but will shortly.

Btw...draft picks in either of these drafts cannot be traded.

I should also note that I have decided to include players from the National League, American League, National Association, Federal League, Union Association, Players League as well as assorted negro (and other) all-stars who were prohibited from playing in the majors due to the color of their skin. I will warn you in advance, however, that pre-1894 players and negro leaguers will be rated conservatively. Don't expect Old Hoss Radbourn to be able to win 60 games or for Satchel Paige to strikeout 500 hitters or anything like that.

I highly recommend using the intervening time to consider what park you'd like and what players you're interested in.

Hope to see 24 of you in full draft mode in the very near future!

leecemark
05-20-2004, 05:42 AM
Chancellor, before I start making a draft list there are a couple points on player ratings I'd like to clarify. Diamond mind, as far as I know, hasn't simulated any seasons or players prior to 1901 or the Negro Legues. Will you be creating these yourself? Also, all the player records they have created are based on single season statistics, although I don't know if that will be true with thier upcoming "all time greatest players" version. Will we be using players based on a single season or career totals? If season, it will of course be important to know which season for each player. If career, you've got yout work cut out for you in creating every drafted player (most guys likely to be drafted have a season or several already create). Also, will we be using "neutral era" for our league? For those not famiiar with dimaond mind, players will perform differently in different parks and also in different years. Deadball players moved to live ball will hit more homers. I've run sims with leagues of the best deadball teams in the neutral era (league numbers averaged out over history) and deadball sluggers HRs have jumped up quite a bit. Not to McGwire or Sosa territory, but enough to be dangerous. I haven't used them in live era against live ball pitchers so I can't offer any info on how many Home Run Baker would hit against 1990 pitching. I think I'll find out before the draft though. Chancellor, I've got a pretty good diamond lmind library and some experience on creating players. If I can help with this let me know. Anybody else who knows diamond mind might want to share some tips for drafters who haven't played as well.l

OK, I hereby sign up, with the Baltimore Orioles, since the St. Louis Browns are taken. And why don't we make it the Pre-Yankee Baltimore Orioles for posterity :) .

...oh yeah, is there going to me a managerial draft, or does that even matter? I guess we'll be owner-ballcoaches, huh?

It'll all probably be explained after the stadium draft. Which you should go and draft your stadium now. you can still take coors, nick was drafting out of order. =P

Important Note: I am officially (and forever) renaming this league in honor of a dear friend and fellow baseball lover, Doug Pappas, who passed away before his time this week. Doug died of "heat prostration" while out hiking. Some of you may be familiar with his many superlative efforts on behalf of SABR (http://www.sabr.org) or just through his presence on the Internet (either at Baseball Prospectus (http://www.baseballprospectus.com) or with Doug's Business of Baseball (http://roadsidephotos.com/baseball/bbblog.htm) web site.

Gentleman, I'd like to raise a glass in honor of Doug. He'll be missed by the game, but moreso by his friends. To Doug! So it is with great pride and much sorrow that I re-name this the...

Doug Pappas Memorial Base Ball League

Master Team/Player List

Hulbert League - Eastern Division
Atlanta Braves (Dale C76)
Brooklyn Dodgers (The Commissioner)
Buffalo Bison (tearforamariner)
Montreal Royals (mikey_s)
New York Giants (Chancellor)
Worcester Ruby Legs (Kroxquo)

Hulbert League - Western Division
Chicago Cubs (The Splendid Splinter)
Colorado Rockies (NickG)
Houston Astros (rdon)
Kansas City Cowboys (jhwinfrey)
Milwaukee Brewers (brewcrew82)
St. Louis Cardinals (TheWizard)

Johnson League - Eastern Division
Baltimore Orioles (JW)
Boston Americans (RedSoxFanWoosh)
Dayton Marcos (Sportkrank21)
Detroit Wolverines (Captain Cold Nose)
Louisville Colonels (catcher24)
Philadelphia Athletics (JayLans)

Johnson League - Western Division
Hollywood Stars (leecemark)
Oakland A's (Biofury)
Seattle Mariners (shigelojoe)
Seattle Pilots (Dudecar00)
St. Louis Browns (Lovullo4Ever)
Texas Rangers (jls4223)

I would like to note that we are currently full with 24 owners but, that (a) I would like very much for this league to expand and become a keeper league at season's end if there's enough interest; and (b) there may be drop-outs. In either event, it would be great if anyone else who is interested in joining would PM me about it so I'll know who to contact as soon as an opening exists.

Our Schedule
Ballpark Draft - in progress
Player Draft - coming soon
Managerial Profiles - coming soon

What do you guys think of holding a draft for the selection of managers, general managers, etc? Anyone interested in adding these kinds of team personnel for the fun of it? They'd have no bearing on actual game play, but would make for more interesting game reports and/or could be used in posts about your team.

Personnel drafts sound like a fun idea.

I'll second that

Agreed, since it has no effect.

Hey, I'll be a proud participant of the Pappas Leagues. Sorry to hear about him. I can say though, he was doing something he loved to do (I assume).

:gt

...um, which brings me to an embarrasing question, as I am not proficient in sim-engines: is there a site where I can look up the rules of this Diamond Mind you speak of?

*edit* I found the official site. Very impressive. I like the cross-era and cross-league adjustments. Anxious to get started on the player draft. Are you going to be using career averages, Chance? Or, say, a combination of the players' ten best years?

Would you mind posting a link since I've never played ANY computer simulation before. My experience is limited to statis-pro tabletop simulations.

My computer skills aren't up to creating a link, but the site is www.diamondmind.com. If you check out the specs for the All Time Greatest Players it will tell you the basis for how our players will be rated.

As mentioned in the other thread, if there's any chance I can play, I'd definitely like to :)

That looks like a distinct possibility Sandman, there are some people who haven't replied to the ballparks so we can almost assume we'll never see them again.

Attention!

I need everyone who has expressed an interest in doing this to PM me and let me know if (a) you're still interested; or (b) you're no longer interested.

If I don't hear from you in a reasonable amount of time - by the end of the week most likely - then I'll assume you are not interested. So please express your continued interest promptly if you want to play.
