Hello Baseball Fever Fans,

The Midsummer Classic has passed and the Fall Classic is upon us. Is there another Mr. October coming or will there be a Bonehead instead? My nickname to-do folder was getting a bit behind so I spent a few hours this morning adding quite a few, then thought it might be fun to share some of those I added (or already had) here in a nickname only format.

Nicknames are indeed a lot of fun, but one thing that has puzzled me about nicknames is how some baseball registers list players full birth name, then they list a common name (one that most fans know them by) and then nicknames. For instance "Leonard Kyle Dykstra"....Len Dykstra...Nails

This has always confused me because take for instance the nickname "Bad News". I have some registers that list him with no nickname but uses "Bad News Galloway" as the common name (one that fans knew him by). Which of course how many fans can a player have who only played in 21 games for St. Louis his whole career.

The only player I know of who had "Bad News" as a nickname is Arvel Odell Hale. He was a decent ballpalyer in the 30's hitting 300 a few times and even led the league one year in Pinch hit AB (hey..at least he led in something).

If anyone can enlighten me with what is a nickname and which registers are in fact "fact" on this subject, please respond. Is there a standard.

I have also did some reserach on nicknames and will go over your (Sean) list this weekend....one nickname that comes to mind is "Death to Flying Things" which Baseball Almanac list as John Curtis Chapman...and I have "Robert Vavasour Ferguson" was "Death to Flying Things" Ferguson, who actully played in the very first year of the National League back in 1876.

Well I only came up with 24 of them so that puts me in the rookie catagory. But I did know some that had the same nickname but wasn't linked on your post.

I mentioned Bad News which I know as Arvel Hale and Death to Flying Things was Bob Ferguson
Foghorn was George Myatt and George Miller
Foxy Grandpa was another nickname of Cy Young in some books as well as Jimmy Bannon

The Franchise was Tom Seaver as well Lou Brock

Holler Guy completely threw me....I dont know anyone with that nickname

2 players also had the nickname Kitten ...George Prentiss and Haddix

and Zip was also Frederick Mollwitz and your guy Jaeger

It's very curious to find the nickname of Roberto Clemente: "Arriba".

It's a Castillan (for you, "Spanish") word that means "Up", "Above".
Usually people chanted "Arriba Equipo!" (Let's go, team!) but a ballplayer nicknamed after a couraging chant?
